In just 5 years, Goldfinger Brewing Company has made Downers Grove, Illinois a true destination for lager-lovers and much of that is to the credit of founder, co-owner, and head brewer Tom Beckmann's tireless quest to make the most interesting lagers you'll ever drink. Tom sits with us for a while to sample through some new and upcoming beers while discussing why telling the stories of his lagers is a key part to reshaping the perception of the category. We also talk about his recent Polish medal for a Polish-style beer, how his first brewing jobs set him up to start his own business, what moves a brewery into the “CollabZone”, which brewers he admires the most, and what specialty serving events could be in Goldfinger's future. Plus, get the exclusive on his first Citra and Mosaic beer, and marvel at the fact that I don't think we ever said the word “decoction” once. (No lies told here.) “This podcast will self-destruct in 5 seconds…”We've often talked on this show about the potential of science fiction to become science fact. It's fairly common for even the most out-there concepts discussed here to be on the verge of becoming reality, even if they don't yet fly in the real world, they sometimes will soon. It's more rare for us to tackle a concept that seemed like pure fantasy at the time but that has almost become reality in the present day.But such is the case with Mission: Impossible III and the voice cloning device. As you'll see in this week's episode, this is one piece of spy tech that is suddenly no longer as unrealistic as it was in 2006 when the movie was released. But perhaps more relevant for today are the ethical implications around the existing technology's use…or misuse, as is so often sadly the case.Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? to learn more…Watch the video version of this episode here! https://youtu.be/9fRFdjq0iR4SUGGESTED VIEWING The Mission: Impossible franchise now encompasses a whopping eight movies when you factor in the release of this year's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. Something tells us that movie isn't the final anything for these movies, but that's another story. ANYWAY…Our episode today is based primarily around Mission: Impossible III, directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci. And if those names sound familiar to folks tuning in to this Roddenberry production, you're right, and Tamara gets into just how pivotal this movie ended up being for Paramount and some other key franchises in the episode. Hold your horses, we'll get to it!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!Voice Cloning via A.I.As Hakeem points out, this technology seemed pretty far-fetched in 2006 when Mission: Impossible III was released, but actually exists (kinda) today! While there are websites out there that will allow you to enter text and get audio that mimics a celebrity voice, we're not super sure how we feel about that. But here's a pretty well regarded text to voice A.I. service for you to play around with. The Physiology of Voice ChangingFor a quick overview of how your voice actually works, you'll want to go here. This should give you a new appreciation for how impressionists are able to uncannily mimic other human voices (not to mention non-human sounds). Think of legends like Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, or the incomparable Rich Little for people who didn't need tech to do this. It's the kind of thing that everyone thinks they can do, but it's a unique talent when it can be done right.Noise CancelationIt's obviously not a 1:1 ratio here, but the science of how noise canceling headphones work is informative when it comes to how this theoretical device might be able to change your voice in real time as you're speaking. That Poem is RealThe poem that Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian is forced to read at gunpoint in this movie in order to get his voice saying every possible sound in the English language? It's real and it has a kind of amusing story from its author behind it.The Mission: Impossible and Star Trek ConnectionSome of what Tamara details about the early production and creative struggles of Mission: Impossible III can be found here. For some earlier connections between the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises, check this out!The Challenges of Voice ActorsA.I. has become a central issue in the labor struggles facing all creative talent recently, including actors. Fortunately, one group of voice actors has banded together to try and get more recognition for their craft.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?The Mission: Impossible movies follow in the tradition of the James Bond franchise in their embrace of wild but plausible technology. We took a look at not one, not two, but three pieces of such tech in our episode on Goldfinger which you can watch here.Final Destination Bloodlines is in theaters now and we went back to the very beginning to examine the central concept of the franchise. Randy Greenberg can remember his first movie experience like it was yesterday. He watched James Bond's Goldfinger at a drive-in movie theater from the back of his family's car, imagining that he too was floating down a canal in Venice. It opened his eyes to the power of film and set him on his own winding journey. But the executive producer is concerned that this in-person experience will disappear with the availability of at-home streaming. Greenberg is a Daniels alumnus and accomplished Hollywood executive, working on films like the Meg and Cowboys and Aliens, among many others. He now runs the Greenberg Group and teaches college courses on the business of film. On this episode, Greenberg shares how he picks the projects he works on, the impact of AI on the film industry and why it's crucial you get off the couch and go to the movie theater. Table of contents • Falling in love with film • Producer vs. Executive Producer vs. Director • Why business school led to a film career • Why the first 10 pages of a script are everything • Managing creative egos on set • AI as both a threat and opportunity in Hollywood production • The business importance of going to the theater • Try it, fail fast, and pivot

Myron Goldfinger was an American architect who, during the height of his career in the 1970s and 1980s, devised a distinctive style in trophy homes for the rich powerful seeking to live in contemporary houses. He reinterpreted American vernacular architecture into an entirely new language that responded to the spirit of the time: the Disco Age. Inspired by Louis Kahn, his teacher at the University of Pennsylvania, Goldfinger was an architect of volumes. His houses were composed of bold compositions of cubes, cylinders, and triangular blocks. Like Kahn, he believed that only basic geometry has the power to achieve timelessness. His language was highly influential, with many other architects building in the suburbs around New York and in the Hamptons copying his style. Having grown up in a humble working-class environment in Atlantic City, Goldfinger said that he sought to create the type of glamourous houses that he never had.To remember Myron Goldfinger, who passed away in 2023, and to see how his legacy is preserved in the 21st century through fresh interpretation, I invited interior designer June Goldfinger, his widow and eternal partner, along with Kelvin Dickinson, President of the Paul Rudolph Institute for Modern Architecture.

With its unforgettable villain, Auric Goldfinger, and characters like Odd Job and Pussy Galore, this film is a true classic that helped shape the Bond formula we all know and love. For this episode, I'm pairing the action-packed spy thriller with Weller Full Proof, a bold and powerful bourbon that packs a punch, much like the film itself. At 114 proof, this bourbon has the richness and complexity to match the high-stakes adventure on screen.Tune in as we explore why Goldfinger remains a fan favorite and discuss some of its standout moments. Grab your drink, sit back, and let's experience another thrilling chapter in the 007 saga!

This week's episode of Wise_N_Nerdy with Charles, Joe, and Kurt is packed with fun, insights, and the wisdom that makes this podcast a must-listen for fans of nerd culture and fatherhood alike. True to tradition, the show opens with the “Question of the Week,” this time tackling the timeless spy genre: If you were to introduce someone to James Bond, what movie would you start with? Joe shares his fondness for both the GoldenEye film and its iconic video game, which shaped the 90s gaming scene. Kurt makes the case for the Daniel Craig movies, particularly as a gateway to the modern era of Bond. Charles brings a deep cut to the table, highlighting Never Say Never Again, while listener Devocite recommends the classic Goldfinger. The debate sets the stage for a spirited episode. A roll of the dice launches the crew into “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Kurt dives into his adventures in 3D printing, sharing creative updates and triumphs. Joe introduces an anime his wife suggested, My Happy Marriage, noting its remarkable animation quality and compelling story. Meanwhile, Charles recounts his exciting weekend at Chattacon, adding another layer of fandom flair. The dice then land on “Daddy, Tell Me a Story,” where Joe recalls his first trip to Six Flags—a wild memory involving some unintended head trauma. This sparks a hilarious and relatable conversation as the hosts share stories of their most memorable (and painful) injuries. As the fates roll on, the crew tackles a meaningful “How Do I...?” segment, offering heartfelt advice on helping kids navigate failures and disappointment. It's a shining example of the podcast's commitment to blending fandom with fatherly wisdom. In the “Parliament of Papas,” the trio responds to a listener's question about managing a challenging relationship with their step-son's biological father, providing both empathy and practical advice. The episode wraps up on a lighthearted note, thanks to Devocite's groan-worthy yet laughter-inducing bad dad joke. So, whether you're here for nerdy discussions, parenting tips, or just a great laugh, this episode delivers on all fronts. Remember to Find your FAMdom with us every week. Finally he convinced Sarah to embark on a new mission: the Permanent Record Podcast 007 Mini-Broadcast! This occasional series from your friends Brian & Sarah started with "Dr. No" and will work its way up to the most recent Bond adventure, and on the way, it will discuss and critique all of the 007 theme songs and other relevant recordings. It's a dream come true for one of the hosts - and for Bond fans everywhere! In this 8th episode, Sarah and Brian are once again joined by Bond author Robbie Sims (Quantum of Silliness: The Peculiar World of Bond, James Bond), and the trio turn their attention to the 1971 movie, “Diamonds Are Forever.” This Bond outing sees the return of the original 007, Sean Connery, after George Lazenby stepped away from the role.  But Sir Sean isn't the only one who has returned after a hiatus from the films; the theme song is sung by Shirley Bassey, who was the voice behind the iconic “Goldfinger” theme and returns to lend her vocal talents to the “Diamonds Are Forever” title track.  Brian, Robbie, and Sarah have a lively discussion about the theme song and Dame Shirley, of course, but they cover other topics such as David Arnold's rendition of the song, the group Q: The Music, and Robbie's fabulous (but not too fabulous) t-shirt, as well as a bit of speculating on the future of the Bond franchise. It's fun for all—well, at least fun for some!  Shirley Bassey singing "Vivo di Diamanti" More info about the Shirley Bassey unreleased songs/rarities box set (currently delayed again) David Arnold - Diamonds Are Forever (featuring David McAlmont) Find Robbie Sims at https://www.instagram.com/quantumofsilliness https://bsky.app/profile/quantumofsilliness.bsky.social You can purchase Quantum of Silliness at https://thehistorypress.co.uk/publication/quantum-of-silliness/ or other reputable booksellers.
