Today's guest really brings me back. Welcome central Jersey's finest, Kevin Shields of Detention and Bigger Thomas. Kevin was a founding member of the central New Jersey punk scene that birthed bands like Bouncing Souls and Vision. He talks about what the scene was like, how it developed, and how it changed. He also talks about life before punk. He was in the Coast Guard and traveled all over; which is how he discovered punk rock in San Francisco in 1979. After an honorable discharge, he moved back to Jersey, picked up a bass, and formed Detention. Their first gig was an eviction party that was shut down by the cops. Their second gig resulted in a ban. Despite, or maybe because of, that, they were championed by none other than Matt Pinfield. Detention was, and really still is, a DIY affair in the truest punk sense. They were working class and wanted to have some fun. Now Left For Dead Records is releasing a compilation of some of Detention's material and it really is a time capsule. Check out Dead Rock ‘n Rollers on Left For Dead Records. The Bouncing Souls are an iconic melodic punk band from New Jersey. They are a personal favorite of mine and have been for over 20 years. Pete is also the owner of what I consider to be one of the raddest guitars in music history. It is a 1979 White Les Paul Custom that has the most iconic legit playwear that I have ever seen! We talk about that and a lot of other stuff like: The early days of the Bouncing Souls Recording music is a collaborative process that requires understanding the dynamics of the band. Aspiring musicians should focus on DIY methods to build their careers before seeking label support. The music industry has changed drastically, making it easier for artists to promote themselves independently. Finding the right label is crucial; artists should seek those who genuinely support their vision. Touring experiences evolve with age, shifting from wild adventures to more family-oriented approaches. The importance of building relationships and trust in the music industry cannot be overstated. Simple gear setups can often yield the best results in live performances. Nostalgia plays a big role in music culture. Modern touring vs 90s touring "Rock dad" life Punk rock was a significant turning point for many musicians. Punkorama CDs were crucial for discovering new music. Epitaph Records played a vital role in the punk scene. Synopsis - Dany Schifter Punk Rock (Episode 43) In this episode of Dany Schifter Punk Rock, we dive into the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk. We kick off with Patti Smith Group's "Revenge", a poetic yet powerful track that blends introspection with punk defiance. Then, we amp up the energy with SNFU's "The King Of Skin", a fast-paced, sarcastic anthem from the Canadian hardcore scene. Discount's "History Is History" follows, delivering a melodic yet thought-provoking take on the weight of the past. We also explore the legendary Stooges, the band that ignited the punk movement with Iggy Pop's primal energy and genre-defining sound. To close, we review "Plea For Peace, Punk Rock Music CD" (Asian Man Records), a powerful compilation featuring Alkaline Trio and The Bouncing Souls, proving that punk remains a tool for resistance and change. Punk is not dead. It's alive, loud, and still shaking the system! #DanySchifterPunkRock #PunkRock #PattiSmith #SNFU #Discount #TheStooges #HardcorePunk #PleaForPeace #AsianManRecords #PunkSpirit #DIY #StayRebellious #PunkNeverDies
Polar Bear Club was a post-hardcore/melodic punk band from upstate New York. They were active mostly from the mid-2000s to around 2015. Their sound was a mix of gruff, emotional vocals with melodic yet aggressive instrumentals. They released albums on Triple Crown Records, Bridge Nine Records and Rise Records. And toured with such bands as The Gaslight Anthem, Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, Every Time I Die, The Bouncing Souls, Bad Religion, The Story So Far, Citizen, New Found Glory and Taking Back Sunday. After a bit of a holiday break we're back with this episode that marked a shift in the show from this point forward. In an episode that starts centering on Homer and his buddies celebrating a sports championship, shifted to a story focused on Bart and the kids of Springfield. Come join us for a great time where we discuss: - Opening up our Joshua Jackson search to any Jackson Joshuas or even Jockson Jashuas. - The Simpsons being broadcast on a different night? - Could the Simpsons be coming to Disney Theme Parks? -Fairweather fandom. - Getting stuck in a "speaking of" loop. - Indoor kite flying. - Children of the Corn trauma. - Very British phrases. All this and much, much more! Our Recommendations Bryan: Post holiday trip to Asbury Park, New Jersey to see the Bouncing Souls. Cori: The aforementioned trip but focusing on the other things she and Bryan did. For a majority of his music career, Erik Kase Romero has been behind the scenes. Romero has developed into a prominent music producer – most notably working with the Front Bottoms (also plays instrumentals in the live experience), Lorde, and the Bouncing Souls. Romero has developed a name for himself in the industry and his musical genius is something that musicians desire. A quick peek at his website takes the viewer into a magical journey that involves a large list of production. It's a list that would be considered a “dream” for anyone just breaking into the business. Romero is now a seasoned veteran and in some ways can be picky when thinking about who he will invite to his home studio next. Romero has been involved in bands on the local circuit for years now. But, what seemed like a silly idea, quickly became a reality over the past year. Romero made the decision to branch out with his abilities and start a solo project. While it has been a great success so far, it was no easy decision. As previously stated, Romero has always been in the background through production and instrumentals in various groups. His solo act is serving as a time where he has the mic and the listeners get to hear his powerful words. His single still already caught the listener's attention for how vulnerable and relatable Romero is through his lyrics. While Romero will continue to push his songs through social media and has several live shows coming up, he does not care for commercial success. This project is not meant to result in headlining huge venues, but instead it's another chance to grow as a musical mind, and have some fun while doing so. How to be still and still be here is set to be released tomorrow. Make sure to give it a listen and support Romero as he takes on this solo adventure. Justin Conigliaro is a singer, writer and lead guitarist of Brooklyn-based punk rock outfit Up For Nothing. Founded in 2001 in the days of The Temple in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn DIY staple, Up For Nothing has gone on to tour all over the United States releasing 5 albums including the band's most recent “Escape Route”, released through San Diego, It's Alive Records. I've known Justin longer than almost anybody I've had the privilege to call friend. It started with my high school ska band playing with them at Arlene's Grocery, and our friendship has transcended many eras of our lives; nights that include seeing countless bands, long van rides to other states, excursions to The Fest in Gainesville, FL, and more times seeing The Bouncing Souls than I could ever try to count. I still have the ticket stub somewhere of the time I got to see them open for Sum 41 at Union Square institution, Irving Plaza. We talk movies, music, New York sports, the unhealthy side of nostalgia, and just a million things. Grateful that Justin is the podcast first reoccurring guest and unless I do something stupid to mess up our friendship, it won't be the last! Justin Sane and the other members of Anti-Flag, Chris Head (guitar), Pat Thetic (drums), and Chris Barker, AKA Chris No. 2 (vocals, bass) have released statements about Anti-Flag's disbandment and the allegations abasing Justin. Additionally, more allegations have poured out on social media. On July 19, 2023, Anti-Flag posted an update on their Patreon announcing their disbandment and the intention to refund fans who were subscribed. Following this announcement, their website was taken down, and the band's social media accounts were deleted. Chris No. 2 also deleted his personal social media pages. The band has not released an explanation or official statement outside of Patreon confirming their breakup. The band was on tour in Europe at the time of their disbandment, due to support Dropkick Murphys at a show in Prague on July 21; the band also planned to tour alongside The Bouncing Souls in fall 2023. When asked to offer a statement regarding the breakup, the band's publicist declined to comment. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had the biggest ska-punk hit of the '90s. Their song "The Impression That I Get" was huge and made them legit stars for a while. But they were a band that earned it. They got their start in the 80s, signed to Taang Records in 1989, got a major label deal in 1993 and released several records before hitting it big with their 1997 record Let's Face It. Not to mention, they were a huge influence on the sound of US ska-punk in the 90s. Today, we talk to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' bassist Joe Gittleman (aka the Bass Fiddleman). He tells us stories from the Bosstones year, working at SideOneDummy in the 2000s, producing Big D and the Table's "Strictly Rude" record, playing in Gang Green and he gives us his side perspective regarding The Bosstones' breakup last year. He also talks about playing Lollapalooza in 1995, quitting drinking, and Bouncing Souls covering his song "Lean On Sheena" from his other band Avoid One Thing, and how the song ended up being one of the Souls most popular songs. We talk about Brian Fallon and Gaslight Anthem's landmark record The 59 Sound, playing Warped Tour and the significance of seeing Fishbone play in the 80s. Plus we talk about Joe's upcoming Wavebreaker release on Bad Time Records with the great Bad Operation. You're going to want to grab a copy ASAP! Support the show
