ORIGINALLY RELEASED Jul 24, 2023 Dr. Gerald Horne, renowned historian, prolific author, and leading scholar of African American history, joins host Breht O'Shea and guest co-host PM Irvin for the inaugural episode of a compelling new series dedicated to exploring the profound life and influential work of W.E.B. Du Bois. A towering figure in American intellectual history, Du Bois was an innovative sociologist, pioneering Marxist socialist thinker, distinguished historian, and a passionate advocate of Pan-Africanist civil rights and liberation. In this richly detailed discussion, Dr. Horne provides his deep historical expertise and sharp analytical insight to illuminate Du Bois's groundbreaking masterpiece, Black Reconstruction in America. This seminal text revolutionized the historiography of the Reconstruction era by highlighting the central role that African Americans played in striving for democracy and liberation following the Civil War, while powerfully dismantling the myths perpetuated by white supremacist narratives of American history. Listeners will gain a profound appreciation for Du Bois's rigorous methodology, his penetrating critique of capitalist exploitation and racial oppression, and his visionary perspective on racial solidarity and international struggle. This episode not only marks the beginning of a comprehensive exploration of Du Bois's prolific intellectual contributions but also serves as a crucial foundation for understanding the historical dynamics that continue to shape racial politics and liberation movements today. Nick and Angela welcome a master of his craft to Dish. Alex Horne is an English comedian, writer and creator of the award-winning and highly original game show Taskmaster, which he cohosts with Greg Davies. Horne, born in Chichester, began his comedy career as a student doing routines at open mic nights in Cambridge before appearing at his first Edinburgh Fringe in 2000. It was at the Fringe that Taskmaster came to life, before making its debut on our TV screens in 2009 (first on Dave and now on Channel 4). The show, now in its 19th season, has been broadcast in over 120 countries and recently was turned into a live immersive experience in London. Alex, who lives in Chesham with his wife and three sons, is also the lead singer of The Horne Section, a ‘six-headed musical comedy band', who have extended their UK and Ireland tour across the duration of 2025. They can also be seen on TV in the aptly titled The Horne Section TV Show, which returns for its second series later this year. Nick, Angela and Alex start the episode over a Guinness with a side of Pringles, before enjoying meatballs in tomato sauce, a recipe by the one and only... Angela Hartnett. The perfectly crafted meatballs are served alongside a glass of Primitivo di Manduria Riserva. With so much going on in Alex's life, this episode covers a lot of funny ground, including the origins of Taskmaster, The Horne Section and Alex's skills in the kitchen, while Angela learns something new about Pringles… We are doing a live episode in Sheffield! On Friday 4 July, Dish will be at The Crucible Theatre at Crossed Wires Festival. For our second ever live show, Nick and Angela will be joined by the newly announced and hilariously funny comedian, Lucy Beaumont. Tickets are available now at crossedwires.live. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Feb 4, 2023 In this episode of Guerrilla History, we unpack Gerald Horne's explosive and essential work The Counter-Revolution of 1836: Texas Slavery & Jim Crow and the Roots of U.S. Fascism. Horne dismantles the romanticized mythology of Texas independence, revealing it instead as a pro-slavery revolt against Mexico's abolitionist policies. We trace how white settler colonialism, racial capitalism, and the violent defense of human bondage shaped the formation of Texas—and, more broadly, the reactionary trajectory of U.S. history. This episode challenges the lies we were taught, connecting the dots between the foundation of Texas, the rise of Jim Crow, and the enduring roots of American fascism. A must-listen for anyone serious about confronting the true history of empire. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio HERE
Building on our series of interviews with Atlanta locals, we spoke with Byron, Ryon & Tyson Horne, better known as The Horne Brothers. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop, the brothers highlighted Atlanta in their 2024 documentary, “The South Got Something To Say.” Though Hip-Hop's birthplace is credited as New York, the documentary discusses how a large share of popular hits and collaborations have come from Atlanta. It also covers the city's status as a music melting pot that has created unique, cross-genre sounds through a welcoming network of studios, artists, producers and other talent. This makes Atlanta a strong force in the overall music economy, and therefore the perfect place for music execs to meet for Music Biz 2025. Tune in to hear more on how music impacts the city's education system, sports & film sectors, and how both the Music Biz Conference and Atlanta's local government can spark impactful movements.

The Commerce Commission says it'll take KiwiRail to court if it doesn't compensate ferry customers. The rail provider's agreed to pay those disrupted in three Interislander cancellations in early 2023. KiwiRail had previously treated delays and cancellations from mechanical faults as out of their control, which the Commerce Commission argued misled customers. The Commission's Vanessa Horne told Mike Hosking KiwiRail should've taken action on its own accord. She says good businesses get ahead of the game to ensure customers are cared for. 1- Start off with a big thank you and recap of the Bubba Wingfield fundraiser from over the weekend 2- Ranting about Jackson and the mayors race, I'm still not convinced the Horne is the man for the job but he's 1000% better suited than Chokwe and at lease deserves a chance to be the Democrat candidate where he'll face off against one of the 3 really strong independent candidates such as my close friend and mentor Kim Wade, Zack Servis or Rodney DePreist (who I continue to forget about) 2- A Disgraced former MHP trooper seems to have a hard time keeping my name out of her mouth and using my image for clicks on her social media (which is funny because other than having to discuss her firing I've always treated this person fairly), it's funny what people will do when they become desperate for attention. On a positive note I guess I've reached a level where this should be expected and not frowned upon, I just regret ever having her on my show or handling her firing with kid gloves instead of speaking on it how I truly felt. Lesson learned, never hold back and never take it easy on someone who wouldn't do the same for you. 3- AG Lynn Fitch has indicted several Capitol Police officers who had to shoot some bad guys in Jackson to defend themselves in what's clearly nothing more than a political stunt to pander to Democrats as she ramps up for a potential run at the Governors office in 2028. I will do everything in my power to prevent that from happening after what she's done to these officers. 4- How are we ever going to get to Mars if we keep arresting all of our future rocket scientist, engineers and astronauts?
Douglas P. Horne joins us to discuss his 2 volume book. Deception, Intrigue, and the Road to War (Vol. 1 of 2)Did President Franklin D. Roosevelt have foreknowledge of the attack---and did he (and his senior military leadership) then withhold that knowledge from his overseas commanders in Hawaii?Douglas P. Horne, a 1974 Cum Laude graduate of The Ohio State University who majored in history, and author of the five-volume work "Inside the Assassination Records Review Board" (about the U.S. Government's medical cover-up of the JFK assassination), has put his 40 years of combined military-and-civilian service to the Federal Government to good use in studying the 1945-46 Congressional Investigation into the Pearl Harbor attack; a little-known 1946 U.S. Government report containing key evidence about the attack; and the most recent Revisionist works about Pearl Harbor, to produce a grand "new synthesis" which answers the persistent question: "Did FDR know about the Pearl Harbor attack before it took place?" A former U.S. Naval Officer who spent 14 years working in four different Navy jobs at Pearl Harbor, and a Japanophile who has always been fascinated by the Imperial Japanese Navy, Horne has applied his own Navy job experience, and his understanding of how the government operates, to a plethora of data about the Pearl Harbor attack, to produce a work of high tension and drama that attempts to deal honestly with the most significant foreign policy event in America's 20th century history. Mr Horne is the man to thank for obtaining the documents exposing Operation NorthwoordBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Chip Matthews joins me again this Monday as we discuss a bunch of wild stuff like only 2 guys who've known each other 30 years can. 1- I recap my experience being a part of the Salvation Army's big annual fundraising event on Sunday, this led to a conversation about bulldozing South Jackson and starting completely over. 2- Exposing how black fragility is a real thing and using a fight video that went viral locally by claiming it happened in Madison (it didn't) and exposing a local content creator who was upset to find out it didn't happen there because he wanted it to have happened there so they could feel better about the violence in Jackson. 3. I go on a rant about why I think everyone should work in the restaurant industry or sell cars at least once in their lives so they understand how hard it is dealing with the general public. This led to me explaining how difficult it is selling cars to stupid people. 4- David Archie claims the Republicans are behind John Horne's campaign so the state can takeover Jackson's assets and that only the white areas will benefit from a Horne mayoral run as if those already aren't the "prosperous" areas in the city. 4- I went to a little league baseball tournament in Clinton over the weekend and was disgusted by the way the home plate umpire acted in what ended with him ending the game, causing a team to lose out of the tournament and him being fired by the tournaments organizer.

In this month's episode, we learn about Camp Woodland, a summer camp that existed in Phoenicia, NY from 1939-1962. Among many of the summer camp settings Pete visited during the 1940s and ‘50s, Woodland was a space Pete visited with regular frequency, and spent much time making music with campers over the course of several decades. As we go in depth with today, Pete's time spent at Woodland would be uniquely impactful for many people, ranging from the Folk Festivals of the Catskills and song collecting to Pete learning Guantanamera from a Cuban counselor in 1962. To learn more about all this, we spoke with two former attendees of the camp, Bill Horne and Pat Lamanna.
Kingfish w/ Jackson Jambalaya joins me today to breakdown all of yesterdays election results, but none have bigger implications than Chokwe Antar Lumumba (Jackson's thug mayor) only getting 16% of the vote compared to Senator Horne getting nearly 49% and it going to a runoff that's all but a formality before Horne moves on to face the Republican and Independent candidates to become the next mayor of Jackson, Mississippi while Chokwe rides off into the unknown and awaits his federal corruption and bribery trial in summer of 2026 when we assume his eventual landing spot is a federal prison.

Today's poem features a simple but satisfying sleight of hand. Happy reading.Richard Henry Horne (1802-1884), poet, was born on 31 December 1802 at Edmonton, near London, the eldest of three sons of James Horne (d.1810), quarter-master in the 61st Regiment; his grandfather was Richard Horne, secretary to Earl St Vincent. Richard was brought up at the home of his rich paternal grandmother and attended John Clarke's School where John Keats was also a pupil. In April 1819 Horne entered Sandhurst Military College but left in December 1820. In 1823 after reading Shelley's Queen Mab, he decided to become a poet.In 1825 Horne sailed as midshipman in the Libertad to fight for Mexican independence. After two years in America he returned to London, where in 1833 he published his first book Exposition of the False Medium and Barriers Excluding Men of Genius from the Public. In the next decade he published three poetic dramas, contributed prolifically to literary magazines, edited the Monthly Repository in 1836-37 and served on the royal commission on child employment in factories in 1841. His most famous year was 1843 when he published his epic Orion at a farthing a copy to show his contempt for public taste. It ran to six editions in a year and made him a celebrity. During the Irish famine he was correspondent for the Daily News. In 1847 he married Catherine, daughter of David Foggo. In 1852 Horne faced a crisis: his marriage was failing; he was impoverished; he was discontented in his work on Charles Dickens's Household Words; and he was torn between the practical and poetic sides of his nature. Tempted by dreams of fortune on the Australian goldfields and a chance to escape, Horne arrived at Melbourne in September. He soon became commander of the private gold escort and in 1853 assistant gold commissioner at Heathcote and Waranga. He was erratic in both posts and was dismissed in November 1854. By 1855 his English ties were severed, his wife having requested a formal separation. In Melbourne he became clerk to (Sir) Archibald Michie, and lived with a Scottish girl; their son, born in 1857, died after seven months. In September 1856 as a radical Horne contested Rodney in the Legislative Assembly but lost. As a commissioner of sewerage and water supply in 1857 when Melbourne's new reservoir was under public attack, he did little to appease the critics. By 1860 he was again unemployed and living at St Kilda with a female companion. He was well known at Captain Kenney's swimming baths, lectured at Mechanics' Institutes on 'The Causes of Success in Life' and failed to win the Belfast (Port Fairy) seat. He helped to found the Tahbilk vineyard on the Goulburn River. In 1862-63 the Royal Literary Fund assisted him.In June 1863 Horne was made warden of the Victorian Blue Mountain goldfield near Trentham: 'my Siberia'. Again he began to write seriously and found tranquillity. On visits to Melbourne he held court at Henry Dwight's bookshop, and became friendly with George Gordon McCrae and Marcus Clarke. In 1864 he published a lyrical drama, Prometheus the Fire-Bringer, and in 1866 for the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition a masque, The South Sea Sisters; it contained a rhythmic representation of an Aboriginal corroboree which brought acclaim. In 1867 he celebrated the arrival of the Duke of Edinburgh with a cantata, Galatea Secunda, signing himself Richard Hengist Horne, the name by which he was henceforth known. In Australia he produced no significant poetry but some good prose: Australian Facts and Prospects(London, 1859), and an essay, 'An Election Contest in Australia' in Cornhill, 5 (1862). Disillusioned, he sailed in June 1869 for England where he became a literary doyen, producing many new works all artistically worthless. His poverty was relieved in 1874 by a government pension, and he died at Margate on 13 March 1884.-bio via Australian Dictionary of Biography This is a public episode.
