Over 75 years after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that launched America's entry into the Second World War, one persistent question remains unanswered: "Did President Franklin D. Roosevelt have foreknowledge of the attack---and did he (and his senior military leadership) then withhold that knowledge from his overseas commanders in Hawaii?" Douglas P. Horne, a former Naval Officer who recently completed 40 years of combined military-and-civilian service to the Federal Government, deals directly with this most difficult of all questions about World War II, in the first major "Revisionist" work about Pearl Harbor written in the last decade. Contrary to recent assertions by mainstream historians that the Revisionist hypothesis is now dead, Horne finds it to be more robust than ever. In the first known work that studies FDR's foreign policy "on the road to Pearl Harbor" as a timeline, or chronology (which assesses numerous factors---including codebreaking, diplomacy, military strategy, the unfolding events in Europe, and the personality and words of FDR himself), the author compellingly presents his own unique findings regarding the longstanding allegation by Revisionists that FDR used the impending Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as a "back door to war." Horne concludes there is, indeed, persuasive evidence that once FDR's undeclared naval war against Hitler in the north Atlantic failed to provide the desired casus belli (which would have allowed him to request a declaration of war against Nazi Germany), then consequently, permitting the Imperial Japanese Navy to attack Pearl Harbor---without providing any specific advance warning to the Hawaiian field commanders (i.e., allowing the Japanese to "fire the first shot" and commit "an overt act of war")---became the last, best chance for FDR to get a united America into the Second World War. FDR's overriding goal throughout 1940-41 was the imperative to get America involved, as a belligerent, in the war against Hitler's Germany, and the Japanese attack accomplished that goal, as Roosevelt knew it would. Both the timing of when FDR apparently received his foreknowledge of the impending attack, and the mechanism by which it was likely delivered, are thoroughly considered in this work. Author Douglas Horne also provides a critical assessment of the most recent Revisionist works, and using a new approach to the "big question" about Pearl Harbor, provides a bold new interpretation of events that will surprise most readers.https://amzn.to/4owLBL2Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Do you like fractured fairy tales? You know, when the story you think you know gets flipped turned upside down!? Yeah you do, you know you do and today's guest has got a fun one! On this episode of the podcast author Patrick Horne stops by to share his debut release, "Bear and the Three Goldilocks" and what path he took to get to this point. It's a fun conversation we think you'll really like so pull up a chair and enjoy! About Patrick Horne I've worn many hats throughout my adult life. I've been a tennis coach, a teacher and more recently a children's book author. Every experience that I have had has made a great impact on my life and I'm so happy to be able to share those experiences here. About 'Bear and the Three Goldilocks' You'll laugh out loud at this funny fractured folktale with pictures by a popular artist! The Goldilocks family leave their campsite to go on a hike while their s'mores cool off . . . when along comes Bear. “What's that yummy smell?” Bear wonders. S'mores, of course: too gooey, too chocolatey . . . and just right! Bear eats them all. Bear continues to wreak havoc by breaking a chair, smashing musical instruments, and extinguishing the fire. When the Goldilocks return, they are flabbergasted. They try to make a lot of noise to shoo away the bear . . . when Mama Bear and Papa Bear show up. Mama and Papa apologize profusely for the behavior of their naughty offspring, but the Goldilocks don't speak “Bear.” They just hear a lot of LOUD GROWLING. So they decide to hightail it out of there, and the Bear family gets to enjoy the tents and snacks that are left behind. This hilarious story, a perfect readaloud, and its hilarious pictures will delight children and parents alike. Hello everyone! As promised we have just published episode two and episode three of our three part interview series with Doug Horne and you can find all three episodes over at JFK The Enduring Secret YouTube channel Doug Horne is an iconic figure in the area of JFK research and investigation. His courageous work while at the Assassination Records Review Board has proven to be one of the most important contributions to the understanding of JFK autopsy evidence. I first met Doug in November 2023, during the week of the 60th anniversary of the assassination. His presentations in Pittsburgh at Duquesne University were Illuminating. After his absence for a time from the more active JFK research community, we were all delighted at seeing him return to engage once again. Fast forward to November 2024, and Doug and I once again crossed paths in Dallas at the JFK Historical Group. It was happenstance and a call from our mutual friend Andrew Iler that brought us together this past week…once again. We spent two days intensely rehashing elements of the case and the autopsy and you are going to hear close to five hours of incredible interview dialogue from Doug that I am certain you won't want to miss. These tapings are spread out over three episodes and they represent a master class about the medical evidence and a candid talk about what it all means. And it all comes directly from Doug. Want to hear his detail conclusions? Want to know just what shots hit the president and whether shots were fired from some place other than the school book depository? Come listen to this episode on our YouTube channel and you'll find out. And you'll hear some spellbinding personal history too, as Doug tells the story of how he came to be part of the ARRB and how the ARRB came to operate in such a highly effective way, in order to advance the investigation. And doing so, even when their charter stopped short of officially allowing them to investigate. It's a fascinating story from one of the foremost experts on this case. Come join us tonight for the first of three episodes. Please do hurry over to JFK The Enduring Secret YouTube channel, and watch this fantastic series of conversations with Doug Horne…and please do subscribe to our JFK the Enduring Secret YouTube channel when you get there.

On this episode of the podcast, Rex sits down for an in-depth discussion with one of his longtime religious mentors and a man he says many refer to as "Arkansas' pastor," Rex Horne, the outgoing executive director of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. With Horne's decades-long career as a prominent Baptist leader, educator and administrator, the two cover a range of topics related to faith, ministry and leadership in this installment of the podcast. The conversation begins with Horne's explaining his recent decision to step down as overseer of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, an announcement released to the public in April, and why he believes now is the right time for the Convention to take on new leadership. Horne, who began his tenure in October 2022 after retiring from a career in ministry and higher education administration, tells Rex that "institutions go through transitions" and understands that organizations occasionally need new oversight and direction. Next, Horne shares his thoughts on why mainstream Christian denominations are becoming "something from the past" and his belief that generational changes and different interpretations of the Bible have played a significant role in the evolution of churches and church attendance. The conversation then transitions to Horne's nine year tenure as president of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, where he learned about higher education and serving as a university leader by listening to and learning from the university's faculty, staff and students. Finally, Horne describes his experiences growing up in the Baptist faith in southern Arkansas, which led to his "call to ministry," including his time growing and expanding Little Rock's Immanuel Baptist Church from 1990 to 2006. In this influential role, Horne tells Rex about serving as President Bill Clinton's spiritual advisor and overseeing a $40 million building project that resulted in the church's relocation to a much larger facility on North Shackleford Road. Horne has now returned to pastoring, and the conversation concludes with a brief discussion on how he is leading Hope Church in the city's Hillcrest neighborhood, which allows him to continue to be "someone who wants to make a difference," as he describes it. Some questionable curriculum has Superintendent Tom Horne on edge to report it to the federal government. The Scottsdale Unified School District says they are in compliance with DEI policies. We talked to both sides as Superintendent Horne and the Superintendent of SUSD, Dr. Scott Menzel joined the conversation.
The accidental beginningGuy Horn's journey into social housing began somewhat unexpectedly. Fresh out of university in 2015, he and his business partner, David, were simply looking for a way to make money without working for someone else. They discovered they could buy terraced houses in Greater Manchester for £50,000 and learned about an opportunity to house homeless families while generating returns."It was kind of a way of saying, OK, we'll invest in property, get a great return and do some good in the world," Horn explained. What started as a practical business decision evolved into something much more meaningful. When purpose meets profitThe transformation from money-focused entrepreneurs to mission-driven leaders happened organically. About a year and a half into the business, as they began seeing the real impact of their work, their "why" fundamentally shifted."Our why changed from trying to make some money leaving university, to actually we're creating amazing impact now. We're solving a huge problem," Horn shared. This evolution highlights how authentic purpose often emerges through doing the work rather than starting with grand mission statements. The current crisisHSPG operates in a landscape marked by severe challenges:Over 1 million people on housing waiting listsMore than 500,000 people in unsuitable accommodationLocal authorities spending £250 million over budget on temporary accommodationFamilies living in hotels for 5-7 years without proper cooking facilitiesHorn emphasises that these aren't just statistics, they represent real people facing daily hardships that ripple through education, employment, and community stability.A different approach to housing provisionWhat sets HSPG apart is their comprehensive approach. Rather than specialising in one area and expanding later, they integrated the entire lifecycle from day one—acquisition, development, property management, and investor relations. This holistic model emerged from necessity but became their competitive advantage. The company has also taken the unusual step of acquiring a for-profit registered provider, allowing them to deliver both new-build affordable housing and supported accommodation for those transitioning from homelessness to independent living.Culture as a competitive advantagePerhaps most remarkably, HSPG boasts an almost zero voluntary turnover rate. Horn attributes this to a culture built organically from core team members rather than imposed from above."When we first started talking about our behaviours 5 or 6 years ago, it was like who are we? What is HSPG? What does it do?" This authentic approach to culture creation, rooted in actual behaviours rather than aspirational values, has created a workforce deeply committed to the mission.Looking forwardHSPG's ambition is to deliver 2,000 more units over the next 3-5 years, a significant increase that still represents less than half a per cent of what's actually needed. This perspective keeps the team grounded while highlighting the enormous opportunity ahead."There could be 10 more HSPGs and we still wouldn't even touch the sides," Horn noted, emphasising both the scale of the challenge and the potential for others to create a similar impact.Advice for aspiring entrepreneursHorn's counsel for would-be entrepreneurs is refreshingly practical: "Just decide this is what I'm going to do... I'm going to get moving with it." He emphasises that getting started is the hardest part, but once you're moving, changing direction becomes much easier than starting from a standstill. For those interested in social housing specifically, he highlights the tangible nature of the work and the ability to help people every single day while generating attractive returns, a rare combination in any industry.

In a vibrant radio broadcast, host Clay Edwards delivers a candid take on recent Mississippi elections. Live from the Men's Health and Women's Wellness Studios, Edwards dives into the surprising Republican sweep in Philadelphia, Mississippi, a majority-Black city. He credits Shawaski Young, a former Democrat turned Republican, for mobilizing voters, leading to a GOP mayor and nearly all aldermen positions won. Edwards marvels at this shift in a city with deep racial history, suggesting it could be a blueprint for other rural areas. He also celebrates Jake Windom's re-election as Pearl's mayor, praising visible improvements like revamped shopping centers. Discussing Jackson's elections, Edwards notes John Horne's victory over Chokwe Antar Lumumba, expressing hope that Horne's leadership will stabilize the city by simply avoiding past mistakes. He critiques Lumumba's tenure, alleging corruption and mismanagement, and dismisses pardon rumors tied to a similar Cincinnati case. Edwards also addresses Ryshunda Harper Beachem's loss in Pelahatchie, condemning her racism claims as unfair, citing universal political hostility. Throughout, he urges listeners to engage via calls and texts, fostering a lively community dialogue.

In this episode, Edwards discusses the Jackson mayoral race, highlighting a WAPT article suggesting a historic outcome with a potential white mayor, focusing on candidates John Horne and Rodney DePriest. Edwards critiques the article for overlooking independent candidate Zach Servais, whom he respects for his passion and detailed plan for Jackson. Servais calls in, expressing frustration over media exclusion and emphasizing his comprehensive strategy, contrasting it with Horne and DePriest's lack of clear plans. Edwards admires Servais's grassroots efforts and boldness, predicting a strong future in Jackson politics. The show also covers breaking news, including Trump's pardon of Larry Hoover, founder of the Gangster Disciples, and other pardons, sparking debate on criminal justice reform. Edwards advocates for prison reform, criticizing over-sentencing for non-violent crimes while maintaining a tough stance on violent offenders. The episode blends local politics, social commentary, and national news, engaging listeners with Edwards's candid, unfiltered style.

This seminal text revolutionized the historiography of the Reconstruction era by highlighting the central role that African Americans played in striving for democracy and liberation following the Civil War, while powerfully dismantling the myths perpetuated by white supremacist narratives of American history. Listeners will gain a profound appreciation for Du Bois's rigorous methodology, his penetrating critique of capitalist exploitation and racial oppression, and his visionary perspective on racial solidarity and international struggle. This episode not only marks the beginning of a comprehensive exploration of Du Bois's prolific intellectual contributions but also serves as a crucial foundation for understanding the historical dynamics that continue to shape racial politics and liberation movements today. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Feb 4, 2023 In this episode of Guerrilla History, we unpack Gerald Horne's explosive and essential work The Counter-Revolution of 1836: Texas Slavery & Jim Crow and the Roots of U.S. Fascism. Horne dismantles the romanticized mythology of Texas independence, revealing it instead as a pro-slavery revolt against Mexico's abolitionist policies. We trace how white settler colonialism, racial capitalism, and the violent defense of human bondage shaped the formation of Texas—and, more broadly, the reactionary trajectory of U.S. history. This episode challenges the lies we were taught, connecting the dots between the foundation of Texas, the rise of Jim Crow, and the enduring roots of American fascism. A must-listen for anyone serious about confronting the true history of empire. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio HERE
