On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a couple of friends who swim in the same punk-inspired scenes but whose musics are pretty different: Barry Johnson and Greg Mendez. Johnson is the singer and guitarist for Joyce Manor, the pop-punk/emo/indie-rock/something-something band that's been blasting out short, to-the-point songs for nearly two decades. There's something perfectly economical about everything the band does: Their records often clock in at under 20 minutes, so there's no fat or filler to be found. The latest is being hailed as their best, which is saying something for a band whose chosen genre rarely seems to age well—something Johnson laughs about in this chat. The album is called I Used to Go to This Bar, and it was produced by Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz. Check out the song “I Know Where Mark Chen Lives” right here. The other half of today's conversation, Greg Mendez, takes a Spartan approach to songwriting as well, but his songs are much more quiet and reflective—you'll definitely hear Elliott Smith vibes on his new album, Beauty Land. Mendez has actually been making music nearly as long as Joyce Manor, but their shyness didn't really push through into wider view until a self-titled album in 2023. Now he's ready to take the next leap—this new record is on the Dead Oceans label, which has released records by like-minded souls Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, and Bright Eyes. Check out the song “Gentle Love” from Beauty Land right here. In this conversation, Mendez and Johnson talk about how they first met, about the ups and downs of sequencing an album, and about doing the stream-of-consciousness creative practice called “morning pages,” where you just write whatever pops into your head. Johnson doesn't want you to see his pages, and you'll find out why. Enjoy. 0:00 — Intro 2:47 — Start of Conversation 5:16 — On sequencing records 7:58 — On releasing new music and planning modern album rollouts 9:20 — On the benefits of slower rollouts and appreciating singles 10:58 — On how they became friends 13:52 — On living in New York, and midlife crises 15:42 — On surfing, skating, and Long Beach 19:50 — On discovering punk through skating culture 20:28 — On touring's impact on creativity, and finding inspiration from other musicians 23:08 — On overcoming writer's block, exercising your creativity with age, “morning pages,” and Kurt Cobain's diary 32:21 — On upcoming tour plans and keeping audiences' attention while playing solo 34:14 — On seeing musicians transfix an audience, getting emotional at concerts, and live versions of songs Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Barry Johnson and Greg Mendez for a great chat. Barry Johnson, Chase Knobbe, and Matt Ebert from Joyce Manor talk with Bullseye about growing up together in the SoCal punk music scene, touring as a small act before the internet, and constantly being labeled as “all grown up,” despite being in their late 30s.To manage podcast ad preferences, review the links below:See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Blizzard warnings outside, sonic weather systems inside. Matt and Sam pulled together twelve new tracks that cut through the February haze, from Bruce Springsteen's lightning-fast protest release to Charli XCX's orchestral, slow-burn elegance. The throughline is momentum—how artists old and new push ideas forward, whether by turning up the amps, sharpening the story, or stripping a feeling down to its essential parts. We start with the tradition of the protest song and how the modern pipeline lets Bruce write Friday, record Saturday, and shake feeds by Sunday. That urgency echoes across the mix: Moby and Jacob Lusk descend into winter stillness with a haunting piano rework, while Metric flips the phrase “victim of luck” into a catchy meditation on fortune's fallout. Foo Fighters slam back to a vintage roar, asking heavy questions with a grin, and Joe Jackson proves legacy doesn't mean nostalgic—his bright, narrative pop still lands clean.Midway, the energy pivots. Andrew Bird and Gavin Brivick give us a short, tender plea that lingers, then Young the Giant wrestle with belonging and the quiet art of not letting go. The Black Keys deliver a bluesy reminder that losses make the wins sweeter, and J. Cole sets 'Two Six' ablaze with tight imagery and shape-shifting flow. Charli XCX steps into cinematic mode for Wuthering Heights, weaving strings and restraint to let the emotion breathe. We close with memory and maintenance: Joyce Manor's snapshot of the bar that shaped a moment, and The New Pornographers' vow to keep the small flame alive—“my hands are cupped around a match.” If you're here for thoughtful lyrics, rock that punches, indie hooks, and a few gut-punch lines you'll carry all week, queue this one up and ride the arc with us.https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-february-2026-new-music/pl.u-0KJxH4oxbV1. Materializing from Louisville, KY, After You Left channels the raw emotion of bands like Title Fight and Joyce Manor while delivering a versatile range of musicality. From slow and somber to melodic and dancey, all the way to hard and heavy, After You Left isn't afraid to challenge their sound while staying true to the core of their music, which is raw, unfiltered emotion. Founded in 2025, the band features frontman and vocalist Zaq Wilcher, bassist Jared Lewis, drummer Justin Watkins, lead guitarist Ben Michels, and rhythm guitarist Jacob Doss. On the surface, an After You Left show is high-energy and fun, but beneath that energy lies deep emotional expression, with heartfelt vocals and lyrics layered with unique harmonies, catchy guitar riffs, and a solid rhythmic foundation. After You Left brings honesty, passion, and intensity to every stage they step on, creating an experience that connects deeply with anyone who listens.

This week, the guys are exploring the tightest chemistry in music by diving deep into ménage à trois anthems and the hardest-working three-piece bands in the business. We're digging into the sheets of the tracklist to see who's really getting down together, featuring enough members to keep everyone happy from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Joyce Manor, Rick James, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, and The Lonely Island. Between the climaxes, the guys take a heavy detour into the "Objectivist" bedroom to look into the unpublished books of Ayn Rand, proving that the Fountainhead isn't the only thing getting a rise out of us this week. Grab a partner (or two) and dig in—it's a season opener you won't want to finish alone.   Apple Podcasts Instagram Spotify Playlist Official Site Listener Listens - People Museum - Instagram

'I Used To Go To This Bar' es como tu veintena: se acaba demasiado pronto. Playlist:Mount Kimbie, Micachu - MarilynMoses Sumney - PollyRoy Borland - SalCupido - Te Hago Un ResumenAnna Burch - 2 Cool 2 CareCamera Obscura - The Sweetest ThingAngel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Megirl in red - bad idea! The National - Bloodbuzz OhioPublic Service Broadcasting - Go!Bloc Party - So Here We AreMogwai - Ritchie SacramentoIncubus - Favorite ThingsPorridge Radio - Birthday PartyLos Planetas - Cumpleaños TotalJustin Bieber - YUKONSen Senra - PerfectoFrank Ocean - Thinkin Bout YouMiles Kane - Love is CruelThe Last Shadow Puppets - Miracle AlignerRobyn, Arca - SexistentialBeyoncé - PURE/HONEYMaruja - TrenchesKNEECAP - Liars TaleMandy, Indiana, billy woods - Sicko!Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Sunburned in LondonWet Leg - PokemonJoyce Manor - All My Friends Are So DepressedDaphni, Caribou - Waiting So LongFcukers - L.U.C.K.YGelli Haha - Bounce HouseRenaldo & Clara - Amb Tu Podria EstarMaria Arnal - PELLIZCOAlizzz - Ya no siento nadaJeff Tweedy - Throwaway LinesBroken Social Scene - Not Around AnymoreMitski - I’ll Change For YouDua Saleh, Bon Iver - FloodArlo Parks - 2SIDEDXenia, Ganges - NananaAmaia - NanaiPipiolas - NaNaNaPeggy Gou - (It Goes Like) NananaEscuchar audio

Jared Shavelson was raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. His drumming journey stated early in life and got his first drumset at age seven. While playing in all of the local orchestras, marching bands, jazz bands, and theaters in southern New Jersey, he was taking weekly private lessons. During this time he was also starting to play out with his own bands, getting him heavily involved with the Philadelphia punk/hardcore scene. Leaving that area in 1999, he went to New York to attend college at SUNY Purchase studying jazz performance with greats like Ritchie Morales and Kim Plainfield. Jared completed 2 years at the Music Conservatory and left after his second year to start touring internationally with the Boston hardcore band The Hope Conspiracy. Soon after, he also began playing with the pop punk band None More Black, along with the political punk band Paint It Black. After living in New York City, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia, he now resides in Los Angeles where he started playing with more eclectic acts like Digital Daggers, Pure Love, The Rentals, The Aquabats, Meg Myers, Seal, Dark Waves, Cyn, Ways Away, Boysetsfire, Joyce Manor, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Chuck Ragan, Chase Atlantic, Ceremony, and many more. In this episode, Jared talks about: Where social media falls short Biking and drumming The impact of Jared's teachers early in life Parallels between jazz and punk/hardcore Punk, hardcore and the DIY scene The unique challenges of a band like Mariachi El Bronx Drumming for Seal Here's our Patreon Here's our Youtube Here's our Homepage

On this episode of CD Burners, we're talking about the record that crash-landed into punk and changed everything, Joyce Manor's self-titled debut with special guest, Vinny Morales of Grave Secrets. We break down how a 13-minute album became a modern classic, why it felt like a slap in the face (in the best way), and what made it resonate so hard with DIY kids everywhere. Hosted on Acast. Today, we've got another segment of the podcast called Big Fat Five. This is where I invite my favorite drummers on the show to break down the five records that helped shape their approach to the instrument. This format also inspired my book, Drummers on Drumming, which is available now as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. Today's guest is Jared Shavelson. I met Jared through a mutual buddy and Big Fat Five alum, Mike Robinson. Jared is the real deal. He studied jazz in college but left early to kickstart his career—and it's safe to say that decision paid off. Over the years, he's played with Seal, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Joyce Manor, The Hope Conspiracy, Paint It Black, The Aquabats, and so many others. I just saw him perform with Mariachi El Bronx on New Year's Eve, opening for Morrissey at The Palladium. He was playing a cocktail kit, and the Afro-Cuban rhythms he was laying down were absolutely insane—I was completely blown away. Now, we were supposed to record this a few days ago, but life in LA had other plans. Between the fires and travel chaos, it was hard to pin down a time. Jared ended up flying out of Los Angeles Thursday night, only to get stuck in Atlanta during a snowstorm when his flight was canceled. After being stranded at the airport for 18 hours, he decided to help pass the time by hopping on the mic with me. That's why the audio in this episode might be a little rough—picture Jared huddled in the corner of a busy terminal while we recorded. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

Joe Reinhart is what I want to be when I grow up. He's like the cool kid from down street who got into skateboarding and punk rock before everyone and was always down to teach you how to Kickflip or play the bass solo from Maxwell Murder. He's just fucking cool, and he's got a long track record of playing in cool bands (Algernon Cadwallader, Hop Along, Dogs on Acid) and helping other cool bands (Joyce Manor, Dr. Dog, Charles Ellsworth) make rad records. This was a fun conversation to revisit, and really made me want to hang out with Joe agin. I hope you all enjoy it! If you'd like to support our show directly please head on over to our Patreon.
