HEAVY Music Interviews
BARRY From JOYCE MANOR Talks Australian Tour With THE WONDER YEARS And More

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Angela CroudaceBarry Johnson, vocalist and guitarist from Joyce Manor, sat down with HEAVY for a conversation about the band's upcoming Australian tour with The Wonder Years, their creative process, and life on the road. The Californian punk rockers are gearing up for a return to Australia, a place they've always enjoyed performing and connecting with passionate fans. With a long-standing relationship with the country, Barry shared his excitement about the tour and reflected on the band's journey. When asked what he was most excited about for this round of shows, Barry's enthusiasm was evident. "I'm excited to be back in Australia. It's been a while, and I love it there. The crowds are great, and the people are really easy to talk to," he said. He also highlighted the similarities between California and Australia, particularly the laid-back vibe that makes him feel at home. "Being from California, I feel like Australia is a sweet spot. It's got the surfer culture, but the humour aligns with English humour, which is something I can really relate to."Barry's memories of past shows in Australia are fond ones, though he admitted that some moments tend to blur together. However, one standout memory remains a show at The Gasometer in Melbourne, which he described as one of the best they've ever played. "That show was definitely one of my favourites. It was such an amazing night, and it's always stuck with me," he shared. Even after all these years, that performance holds a special place for Barry, ranking among the top shows of his career. The conversation then shifted to the creative side of Joyce Manor. Barry reflected on the making of Last You Heard of Me, from their 2016 album Cody, a track that went through numerous revisions before it came together. "It was one of those songs that we worked on for so long, making small adjustments until it finally clicked," Barry explained. The process was challenging, but the outcome was something the band is incredibly proud of. "It's hard to imagine it any other way now. All the hard work paid off, and I'm really proud of how it turned out," he added. In terms of songwriting, Joyce Manor's process has evolved over the years. Initially, Barry wrote nearly everything for the band, but as time went on, it became more collaborative. "On Cody, it was myself, Chase, and our producer Rob Schnapf working together. It's really become a group effort," Barry explained. The band's dynamic allows them to balance creativity, ensuring that no one voice dominates while still pushing each other to create their best work.As for Barry's personal musical tastes, he admitted that while his preferences have evolved slightly over time, they remain grounded in the pop-punk and indie realms. Bands like Weezer, The Gin Blossoms, and The Smiths continue to inspire him. "I like a mix of '90s pop-punk, power pop, and '60s music. I've always loved a good song with strong melodies," he said. His love for the craft of songwriting shines through, and it's clear that melody and structure remain at the heart of his musical identity. When asked about the band's daily routine on tour, Barry joked about how annoying they can be. "We speak our own weird language, and it's a bit insufferable at times," he laughed. Despite the inside jokes and constant banter, Barry explained that the hardest part of touring is finding time for himself. "Being around people constantly can be tough. I need a little alone time, but it's hard to get that on tour," he shared, offering a glimpse into the reality of life on the road.Despite the challenges, touring remains one of the most exciting parts of being in Joyce Manor. When asked whether the band still parties on tour, Barry was quick to respond. "Oh, we definitely party. It's one of the best parts, but it can make it hard to keep up the energy for the long haul," he admitted. Still, he's not planning to slow down anytime soon. "I'm going to milk it for all it's worth," he laughed. Finally, when asked about new music, Barry confirmed that the band is working on a new record, though there's no release date just yet. "We're about halfway through writing and recording it. It's coming along slowly, but we're making sure it lives up to the standards we've set for ourselves," he teased. As Joyce Manor gets ready to hit the road with The Wonder Years in Australia, fans can look forward to more unforgettable shows, new music on the horizon, and a band that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Today, we've got another segment of the podcast called Big Fat Five. This is where I invite my favorite drummers on the show to break down the five records that helped shape their approach to the instrument. This format also inspired my book, Drummers on Drumming, which is available now as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. Today's guest is Jared Shavelson. I met Jared through a mutual buddy and Big Fat Five alum, Mike Robinson. Jared is the real deal. He studied jazz in college but left early to kickstart his career—and it's safe to say that decision paid off. Over the years, he's played with Seal, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Joyce Manor, The Hope Conspiracy, Paint It Black, The Aquabats, and so many others. I just saw him perform with Mariachi El Bronx on New Year's Eve, opening for Morrissey at The Palladium. He was playing a cocktail kit, and the Afro-Cuban rhythms he was laying down were absolutely insane—I was completely blown away. Now, we were supposed to record this a few days ago, but life in LA had other plans. Between the fires and travel chaos, it was hard to pin down a time. Jared ended up flying out of Los Angeles Thursday night, only to get stuck in Atlanta during a snowstorm when his flight was canceled. After being stranded at the airport for 18 hours, he decided to help pass the time by hopping on the mic with me. That's why the audio in this episode might be a little rough—picture Jared huddled in the corner of a busy terminal while we recorded. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

Joe Reinhart is what I want to be when I grow up. He's like the cool kid from down street who got into skateboarding and punk rock before everyone and was always down to teach you how to Kickflip or play the bass solo from Maxwell Murder. He's just fucking cool, and he's got a long track record of playing in cool bands (Algernon Cadwallader, Hop Along, Dogs on Acid) and helping other cool bands (Joyce Manor, Dr. Dog, Charles Ellsworth) make rad records. This was a fun conversation to revisit, and really made me want to hang out with Joe agin. I hope you all enjoy it! If you'd like to support our show directly please head on over to our Patreon. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jeromes Dream over Zoom video!San Francisco hardcore band Jeromes Dream — Erik Ratensperger( drums), Jeff Smith (bass, vocals), and Sean Leary (guitar) — released their new album and third full-length The Gray In Between via Iodine Recordings.Jeromes Dream share history with bands like Orchid, Saetia, Reversal of Man, and pageninetynine. The band existed between 1997 and 2001, then reformed in 2018. The Gray In Between introduces Leary (Loma Prieta) on guitar and was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Quicksand, Joyce Manor)."The entirety of The Gray In Between is a portrait of an absolutely unrelenting fear and anxiety that never seems to let up," Smith offers. "It is a journey inward. It is a reflection on ailment. It is therapeutic. It is a reminder to get out of bed every day even when it feels like there is no point. It is a reminder of the power that art and music hold. It is an inspiration. It is the embodiment of every emotion that runs through me every day."Smith continues, "In the darkest of times, we find joy — often with those who mean the most to us. While making The Gray in Between, I knew I could count on being with Erik and Sean every week. In the chaos of everyday life, the writing of this record was the north star that we could look to no matter how bad things seemed to get. We carved out a space that felt safe and the darkness of the world seemed to melt away as we holed up and wrote. I hope you'll find peace and inspiration as you experience this record, in your own way, with us."We want to hear from you! Back in 2018 I received a text from a buddy during the work day that Joyce Manor was playing at Vintage Vinyl (a record store in central Jersey that has since closed) that night and that I should definitely attend. Joyce Manor was at the midst of blowing up at the time. They saw quick success as a band through their first several records and were hoping to continue the success with their new record, Million Dollars to Kill Me. I didn't know what to expect. Joyce Manor is a band, even in 2018, that could have probably played a far larger venue that night and didn't necessarily need to make a stop in NJ when Philly and NYC are both close by. But, they filled the room and played a long set. What always stuck out to me is how much the band members cared. They took the time after their set to stick around and speak with every fan that wanted to approach them. It was a magical night, and even though I was already a big fan of their music, that genuine interaction made them leap into one of my favorites. That story was discussed on this episode with Matt Ebert, the bassist of Joyce Manor. Matt is a real humble guy who even admits that Joyce Manor only had two goals when they started as a band. Those two goals were to press vinyl and travel to tour Japan. They went on to accomplish that during the first couple of years. Since then they have accomplished some hefty goals that most bands only dream of. This includes recent success like playing Central Park last summer and touring with Weezer this year. However, humble continues to be the key word here. They still take the time to meet with fans and they barely even advertised their most recent record, 40 oz. to Fresno. What's not to love about Joyce Manor? Listen to interview in entirety on Spotify and Apple! Please take the chance to subscribe and leave us a rating!

Song of the Day
Chainsaw Girl - Chainsaw Girl

Song of the Day

Portland's Chainsaw Girl were brought together with a combination of fate and Yu-Gi-Oh. Guitarists Manny Ruiz and Kei Iguchi met at a conference for the Japanese manga series in 2016 and found their common interests spanned beyond Yu-Gi-Oh and into a deep love for music. Vocalist Cricket Greene was later asked to join after their loud and constant singing could be heard through Iguchi's walls. With the rest of the crew found either through Craigslist or mutual friends, their self-described “Boring Dystopia-core” band was complete. While very far from boring, finding a better label for the band is difficult. Pulling from a wide range of influences including Title Fight, Joyce Manor, J-rock bands like Number Girl and Polka Dot Stingray, Bay Area DIY bands such as Pllush and Pardener, as well as Mitski, Hayley Williams, and Caroline Polachek as vocal inspirations, Chainsaw Girl straddle the line somewhere between vulnerable indie rock and harder punk. Our Song of the Day is the eponymous opening track off their self-titled EP which implies it to be Chainsaw Girl's manifesto. “Chainsaw Girl / Never learned to play guitar,” howls Greene in the opening line. Iguchi describes the song as “an experiment in abstract character development through lyrics.” Each bandmate wrote their part in separation and brought them together, creating a full and diverse picture of who each bandmate considers the character of Chainsaw Girl to be.
