Born in Brooklyn and raised in Massapequa, New York, Phantom grew up listening to his parents' jazz records and began playing drums by the age of ten. He took lessons with Mousie Alexander, who played with Benny Goodman, studying jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 1970s, he was playing in bands with his childhood friend, bassist Lee Rocker. They soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer to form Stray Cats.[ When performing with Stray Cats, Phantom did not sit behind a standard drum kit like most drummers, but instead opted to play in a standing position with a minimalist set-up of bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and crash cymbal. During downtime from Stray Cats, Phantom played in swing, rockabilly, and jump blues combo The Swing Cats with Rocker and ex-Polecats guitarist Danny B. Harvey,[6] as well as rockabilly and glam rock project Phantom, Rocker & Slick with Rocker and guitarist Earl Slick.  In 1985, he appeared with Carl Perkins and a host of other musicians including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds and Rosanne Cash for Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session in London, England. Phantom also played with Jerry Lee Lewis. He later formed Col. Parker with former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, releasing the album Rock n Roll Music in 2001.[ Most recently, he has been involved in the eponymous roots-rock band Slim Jim's Phantom Trio; rock-and-roll supergroup Dead Men Walking with Kirk Brandon and Mike Peters, and Captain Sensible;[ and rockabilly supergroup The Head Cat with Danny B. Harvey and the late Motörhead vocalist and bassist Lemmy.  He also hosts the Rockabilly Raveup show on Little Steven's Underground Garage. In March 2023, Barnes announced the supergroup The Barnestormers, featuring Barnes, Cheney, Phantom with Jools Holland and Kevin Shirley. This week we offer up the 12th installment of our series called, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss side projects and solo releases from artists we love. We are celebrating the adjacencies to a true rock n' roll icon: ALICE COOPER. Not much to say about the man, the myth, the legend. Capn'n Content suggested that we focus our listening to the gunslinger guitarists that have supported the Coop throughout his long career. So, that's what we are doing! Enjoy.New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about an artist that many of you know in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of the side projects that the guitarists who've supported him over his 50+ years have. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Hollywood Vampires - “The Boogieman Surprise” from Rise (2019)Billion Dollar Babies - “Too Young” from Battle Axe (1977)Electric Angels - “Dangerous Drug” from Electric Angels (1990)Lou Reed - “Vicious” from Lou Reed Live (1975)Kane Roberts - “Rock Doll” from Kane Robers (1987)Tokyo Police Club - “Little Sister (feat. Rockin' frontman Shaun Soho joins Staci on this episode to talk about how his band Crash Midnight became the highest-drawing indie rock act in Las Vegas over the last few years. The five-piece has gained quite a following due to their old-school, straight-head, hard rock music that's in the tradition of bands like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith but with a touch of late 70s punk. Shaun outlines the evolution of the band, sharing the stage with acts like Sevendust, Gilby Clarke, and Puddle of Mudd—and, of course, reveals his own personal “rock & roll nightmare.”

Decibel Geek 475: Eric Dover Reflects on Slash's Snakepit 'It's Five O'Clock Somewhere'

Rock N Roll Pantheon

This week Eric Dover joins us to discuss Slash's Snakepit's 1995 release 'It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.' In 1995, Guns N' Roses were one of the biggest bands in the world; yet one of the most divided. Ongoing tensions between the members of the band would lead to constant delays in new material and the future of the band in limbo. Not one to sit around, Slash was moved to create new material on his own. With the go-ahead from label heads at Geffen Records, Slash started assembling a lineup of players and got right to work. Bringing in fellow Guns members Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke, and Dizzy Reed as well as the bass talents of Alice in Chains member Mike Inez, he quickly got several songs written and demoed musically. With additional songwriting contributions from Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan, the album is loaded with Guns n' Roses attitude and sound; albeit without Axl Rose on vocals. With lots of great music ready to go, Slash needed a singer. After auditioning over 40 others, the job went to former Jellyfish member Eric Dover. It was an unlikely hiring considering Eric was a backing vocalist with Jellyfish. But, after an impassioned audition and showing he had the songwriting chops to hang with him, Slash offered him the job. The resulting album 'It's Five O'Clock Somewhere' is a lean, mean slab of bluesy rock n' roll featuring blistering vocals and Slash's identifiable guitar tone and solos. Eric Dover shares his memories of his time with Slash's Snakepit for this special Albums Unleashed episode; from his audition to the songwriting and recording process to the tour for the album. There's a lot of great stories in this chat that give you a behind the scenes look at what Eric went through during this time. We think you'll enjoy this one for sure. Decibel Geek 475: Eric Dover Reflects on Slash's Snakepit 'It's Five O'Clock Somewhere'

This week Eric Dover joins us to discuss Slash's Snakepit's 1995 release 'It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.'In 1995, Guns N' Roses were one of the biggest bands in the world; yet one of the most divided.
