In this episode, we interview Africana Studies professor, Dr. Felicia Denaud. Our myth is "All Politics is Local." The Idea that all politics is local ultimately focuses on local (and regional) matters as opposed to national (or international) matters. All Politics is Local or other dismissive retorts to electoral criticism such as "do know your local congressman?” or “local politics is where the real power is” distorts the influence that national (and international) power plays in what happens locally.    The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party is an historical example that highlights the power of local organizing and also the limitations. Fannie Lou Hamer, née Townsend, (born October 6, 1917, Ruleville, Mississippi, U.S.—died March 14, 1977, Mound Bayou, Mississippi),  African American civil rights activist who worked to desegregate the Mississippi Democratic Party.The youngest of 20 children, Fannie Lou was working the fields with her sharecropper parents at the age of six. Amid poverty and racial exploitation, she received only a sixth-grade education. In 1942 she married Perry (“Pap”) Hamer. Her civil rights activism began in August 1962, when she answered a call by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) for volunteers to challenge voter registration procedures that excluded African Americans. Fired for her attempt to register to vote (she failed a literacy test), she became a field secretary for the SNCC; she finally became a registered voter in 1963.In 1964 Hamer cofounded and became vice-chairperson of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), established after unsuccessful attempts by African Americansto work with the all-white and pro-segregation Mississippi Democratic Party. That year she testified before the credentials committee of the Democratic National Convention, demanding that the delegation of the Mississippi Democratic Party be replaced by that of the MFDP. After U.S. Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson attempted to block the television broadcast of her testimony by scheduling a news conference for the same time, forcing television networks to cut away from their live coverage of the convention, her speech was carried on many evening news programs, where it was exposed to a much larger audience than it would have received had it been broadcast at its original time. In her testimony she movingly described incidents of violence and injustice suffered by civil rights activists, including her own experience of a jailhouse beating that left her crippled. At the insistence of President Johnson, however, the committee refused to seat the MFDP delegation, offering only two at-large seats, provided that neither went to Hamer. She and the MFDP refused.In 1967 Hamer published To Praise Our Bridges: An Autobiography. Mississippi’s black civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer is born. Fannie Lou Hamer – born in Montgomery County, Mississippi on October 6, 1917 – became known as the woman who was “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” The youngest of 19, she was the granddaughter of slaves who had yet to gain basic human rights In 1962, a civil rights group came to her town and Hamer was the first to volunteer to register to vote. Hamer and other volunteers were jailed and beaten by police and Hamer was thrown off the plantation where her family worked. Undeterred, Hamer took on the job of field secretary for the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee which sent her around the U.S., registering people to vote. In 1964, Hamer co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) and attended the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. There, on live television, she challenged the all-white Mississippi delegation to give African Americans standing at the convention. She also informed the Democratic Party’s credentials committee of the violent tactics being used in many states to prevent African Americans from voting. Her statements prompted the committee to grant two MFDP delegates speaking rights, which in turn broke the cycle of whites-only delegations for the Democratic Party. Hamer died on March 14, 1977. The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party was organized in 1964 as an alternative to the then-all-white Mississippi Democratic Party. The MFDP, after holding a statewide election open to people of all colors, sent its delegates to the 1964 Democratic National Convention in an attempt to be recognized as the legitimate representatives of the State. In this episode, Dr. Aaron Henry of Clarksdale remembers the long bus to Atlantic City, New Jersey and the crowded accommodations the delegates endured.  After impassioned speeches by Fannie Lou Hamer and Dr. Martin Luther King, President Lyndon Johnson offered to seat two of MFDP delegates with the Illinois delegation. Henry discusses they decision to decline that offer. He also explains that even though they were not seated at the 1964 convention, their efforts lead to the reform of the Democratic Party.

Though they were unsuccessful in their challenge, the 1965 elections were later overturned. Hamer continued to be politically active and from 1968 to 1971 was a member of the Democratic National Committee from Mississippi. In 1963 Hamer became a registered voter and a SNCC field secretary. She worked with voter registration drives in various locales and helped develop programs to assist economically deprived African American families. She was regularly threatened and faced beatings, a bombing, and ridicule. Nevertheless, she was a founding member of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), formed in April 1964 to challenge the all-white Mississippi delegation to the Democratic National Convention. The MFDP sent 68 representatives in August 1964 to the Democratic National Committee meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Hamer was one of the representatives who testified before the party's Credentials Committee. In a televised presentation, Hamer talked about the formidable barriers that southern African Americans faced in their struggle for civil rights. She talked about the murders of civil rights activists such as Medgar Evers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner.
