In early December 1971, after a month of watching the lightbulbs in the List house slowly burn out one after another, neighbors finally became concerned about the List family and called the Westfield, NJ police to report their suspicions. Acting on the calls, officers arrived at house on the morning of December 7 to perform a wellbeing check, and when no one answered the door, they managed to gain access to the house through a basement window.  When they reached the first floor, the officers found the bodies of the List family—including the couple's three children—dead from gunshot wounds to the head they'd suffered a month earlier. Noticeably absent from the remains in the house were those of the family patriarch, John List. In his office, investigators discovered a letter List had written to the pastor of his local church, in which he claimed to have murdered his family in order to spare them the pain of living in a world he believed had become corrupt and morally bankrupt. Julia WackenheimTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Julia Wackenheim. Julia is an actress, a producer, a director, a screenwriter, an activist and a mother. In this episode, we chat about all of these different roles. We start off talking about where she grew up and what it was life to work in a casino in Atlantic City. Then I ask her some very personal questions about the type of care she chose for the birth of her baby. Julia is very open on this subject, and I appreciate it greatly. The Jim Craine Show Steel Pier Stories: Tony Catanoso, Atlantic City Memories and the Alumni Reunion Summary Steel Pier at the Center of the Conversation The episode is anchored in Jim Craine's long connection to Atlantic City and Steel Pier, where he says he worked from 1963 to 1973 in jobs ranging from game barking to running the diving bell and caring for the diving horses. According to Catanoso, the family's lease was repeatedly extended and the property was ultimately sold to them in 2011. He says the family is now in its 36th summer operating Steel Pier and believes they are the longest-running operators in the pier's history. Catanoso describes the role as being a torchbearer for an iconic brand and says the stories and memories shared by visitors remain a meaningful part of operating the attraction. Atlantic City Memories, Woodstock, and the Moon Landing Craine uses the interview to revisit several moments from his youth and early working life. He recalls being scheduled at Steel Pier during the Woodstock period and explains that taking a day off in those days could mean losing a seasonal job. He also tells a vivid story about working the diving bell during the moon landing, when the pier was crowded and his boss told him to announce to everyone that people were on the moon. Craine remembers the crowd cheering and connects that memory with the many entertainers who appeared at Steel Pier.
