This weeks Actor Awareness lockdown Q&A is with The Lowry Theatres producer & programmer Matthew Eames. We will be discussing how 1 of the biggest regional theatres in the UK is dealing with Covid, how there needs to be more support for emerging producers & if you don't want to be an actor, how to get into the more behind the scenes roles. Alongside the questions you send in to. Matthew is Senior Programmer/Producer at The Lowry in Salford, programming theatre, dance, comedy and circus across all three theatre spaces, leading on the contemporary programme for the organisation. He also produces The Lowry’s biennial cross-art festival – WEEK 53 – commissioning shows such as Nigel Slater’s Toast and Le Gateau Chocolat’s Pandora, and leads on cross-organisational community and audience development projects such as Paines Plough’s Roundabout. Matthew has also worked in artist development and fundraising at The Lowry and remains passionate about supporting artists and theatre-makers at all stages of their career to develop and progress. Matthew trained in Musical Theatre at the Royal Academy of Music in London and worked as a freelancer in theatre for 11 years, firstly as a performer in West End and touring musicals and subsequently as a resident/associate director and director. He refocused his career within arts organisations in 2011 taking an MA in Arts Management at Goldsmiths University and joining The Lowry the following year. Matthew is a proud Midlander, hailing from brewery town Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire where he grew up on the same estate as Paddy Considine. He was introduced to theatre thanks to the intervention of an inspiring teacher at his secondary school at the age of 13. He is still going and he hasn’t finished yet.

From these beautiful seaplanes, the Spitfire was born. But RJ never saw it fly in anger. He died of cancer in 1937 aged only 42. Europeans like to say that “America” (aka the “United States”) is not a nation. They are right and wrong. It’s true that Americans come from all over the place, unlike, say, Germans. Just ask an American where she comes from. She’s likely to reply that she comes from Ireland, Africa, Korea or Germany even if she has never set foot in Ireland, Africa, Korea or Germany. We Americans self-identify as a “nation of immigrants,” not really a “nation” per se. But if Colin Woodard is right there are in fact nations in America, or rather North America. In his terrific new book American Nations: A History of Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America(Viking, 2011) he identifies a bunch of them: First Nation, Yankeedom, New Netherland, the Midlands, Tidewater, Greater Appalachia, the Deep South, El Norte, the Far West, New France, and the Left Coast. Colin deftly traces the historical origins of each of these cultural regions and then explains how their particular character affected–and continues to affect–North American history. What this amounts to is a new and refreshing way to look at the North American past and present. And not only that. It turns out I’m a Midlander and my wife is a Yankee. That actually explains a lot… Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

As you know we mark our every 10th episode with something very special. Our Now Show edition, special celebrity guest John Finnemore, and then for episode 30... John's girlfriend Laura! Calm down. Yes, indeed, episode 30 of Rum Doings contains a girl. Ew. The topic of this episode to not discuss: What are we to do about the tragedy of the increasing dearth of Britain's dwindling bees. Population. Obviously we recognise that a girl being on the podcast will upset a lot of people, so if you wish to send her hate mail, please address it to this address. We wonder at how a couple splits its mp3 collection, slander John's childhood girlfriends, and and listen as John's cat Dexter pathetically mews at the door. We concur that the Midlands are in the North, and then make sure we lose all our Midlander listeners. There's discussion of how bad episode 1 was, and how Laura is mad. Which science is best, and why Nick doesn't believe in Thor. John's job is pulled to pieces, with suggestions of features about Dexter in the Economist. Nick then sings the arcades. And what's wrong with a job building sandcastles?
