D-Nox & Beckers, Lexer - True Peak / Conquista - Selador Raise the alarm! Sound the Essential Tunes Klaxon!! (adopts Manc drawl): Call the Cops!!! Yes siree, ‘tis true – the inimitable D-Nox and Beckers are back on Selador! And they have a special guest in tow! The Dynamic Deutsche Duo has delivered several stellar contributions to the Seladorian catalogue – and this latest double-header is a very welcome and characteristically powerful return, with Lexer the cherry on the icing on the collab cake. ‘True Peak' is true peak time (but of course). It rocks straight from the off, as a burbling bassline explodes out of the starting blocks, all mean, moody and magnificent. Slowly but oh-so surely it is aided and abetted by a veritable plethora of memorable hooks, starting with a breathy snatched vocal, building to a keyboard riff from the techno gods. Uh-oh! Lexer has been added to the squad, and all bets are off. ‘Conquista' is set to conquer all in its path. Everything about this tune will make you smile broadly and shake yer hips without even realising. From the so infectious congo-esque intro via the jittering one note riff, funky percussive frills and squelchy bassline to the ravemungous hands in the air crescendo, it's a dancefloor call to arms. Wonder Man on Disney Plus, a “Marvel Spotlight,” is a character driven show that centers around one struggling actor Simon Williams, and our favorite character actor (the Mandarin himself) Trevor Slattery. Simon has a secret and so does Trevor. They both are vying for roles in the same movies and places in each others hearts. This is a tremendously acted, solidly written show that was seemingly dumped all at once. Is Disney afraid to be different and is this stance hindering the creativity of everything under their umbrella? Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley have no business playing these characters with this amount of heart and earnest for an MCU tv show, but they do and they deliver. Please! How do you make your way in business in Manchester as a Scouser? There are many people making big contributions to Greater Manchester who don't quite fit the born, bred or adopted Manc label. And We Built This City is celebrating some of those people with ‘Drawn Here Not Born Here'. Peter Jackson is the former CEO and Managing Partner of the Law firm Hill Dickinson. Back in the late 90s, he came from Liverpool to head up the firm's Manchester Office. In this conversation with Lisa, he reflects on the welcome he got from the city administration at the time and the things he learned by paying attention to how the city sees itself. You'll hear what anyone coming to do business in Manchester or Liverpool should understand to get it right. After a 40-year career, Peter learnt many lessons about setting up in a new city, connecting with people, and becoming part of the local community. And after stepping down as CEO in 2024, Peter now uses his experience to support the firm's ongoing growth and stability. Together, they explore the little quirks of city identity, the differences that have made the fabric of Manchester and how they shape the way people work, lead, and build relationships across the North West.------Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. Welcome dear listener to the 22nd episode of the 7th season of First State Kopites. I'm Paul and today I am joined by Enrique and Daz. The Reds follow up their win over Real Madrid with a disappointing loss at the Etihad (which for once appeared to be lively)Part one - Always want to start with the comments we made at the start of the season - we should not be picking on any of these boys on the basis of what they went through this summerI've seen this defeat described as us being blown away, thrashed, dismantled - just a few of the over the top descriptions from our defeat to City where the xG was even without the fucking ridiculous penalty (0.72 to 0.61). Less than a year ago, City were defeated, overawed, consigned to defeat by the same outlets and the xG was 3.86 to 0.51 in our favor. Proof if proof was needed that overreactions around the Reds gets clicks - then there's our own mad fan base. The actual game - personally can't get past the officiating. And the easy dismissal of goal related events in such a low scoring game. The penalty and the mad 200x zooming in - cf. the non-penalty at Brentford. Or even the studs up challenge at Anfield in 2024. Grating to hear the Manc accent announcing the penalty., The offside…. Only the Reds get goals disallowed like this. How can the linesman call this? Can I mention Bernardo Silva and his foul countThe half baked offsides being flaggedThe inconsistencies - Wirtz can't expect fouls like that in the Premier LeaguePerformances - people too willing to bury everyone. Ibou does look a step off. Confidence, distraction? Isolated in the press.Doku - ‘all fart and no poo' - scores his first goal since January. Not sure what else Foden, Cherki and Haaland didReview has questions on the out of possession plan - are we on the same page?Being played like it's a cup final. Is Slot being too passive?Making it too easy? Lots of pressing but not coordinatedPart two - Mindset going forward:No one that we play till Arsenal has the exceptions of most of the teams we've played so far. Forest, West Ham, Sunderland, Leeds(?) and Brighton in the next 5. With PSV at home and Inter away.Points max - we could get 99! I think the no draws thing is interesting. Few teams have won the league with 5 losses. So, in summary, this loss carries the weight of the previous ones, but looking at the numbers, we don't believe Liverpool are that bad, and that there's plenty of cause for optimism going forward. We'll be back with a preview of Forest and PSV. Thanks to Daz and Enrique for joining me, Paul. And most of all, thank you dear listener for joining us.If you enjoyed the pod, please share it with a friend. How has the ‘Cream of Manchester' been “pulled” back to the city? Will Lees-Jones is the Managing Director of JW Lees, a seventh-generation family brewery and pub business with pubs all across the North West. Will caught up with Lisa Morton to share the news about the exciting return of Boddingtons to Manchester and other pubs near you. They discuss what it means to bring back an icon to the city; Will's hopes for the future of brewing in Manchester, and whether or not he's had a call from iconic “Boddies Girl” Melanie Sykes. You also get a chance to hear Will's conversation with Will from 2022, when they reflected on leading a business through the Covid pandemic, and the values that help keep JW Lees pubs resilient. In that conversation, Will talked about championing local communities through initiatives like Mahdlo Youth Zone in Oldham and Forever Manchester, and why he believed pubs remain at the heart of social life. From steering a historic family business through challenging times to shaping Manchester's next chapter with a truly iconic beer, Will's commitment to tradition, community, and to championing the culture that surrounds the local remains unparalleled.------Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. For years Andi held down the music supervision for Rock Star games and was responsible for a lot of great music getting out to the gaming masses, Andi also was a vital member of Body and Soul, for years doing the warm up and setting the sound palette for Danny, FK, and Joe. Andi has since moved back to Manc, and is currently on the hunt for his own space to install his system and set up a proper party. (tell us when chief!) We are happy to have this great set from him, and we are also happy to have the great Disques Town drawing he did for us! Prins Thomas, the man from Norway, has been DJ'ing producing and remixing at a steady pace since the late 90's. "It's all about connecting people and place to opportunity."Tom Stannard is the Chief Executive of Manchester City Council. A proud public servant, he began his career in London, but his journey in the North West has been a tale of two cities. Tom left Salford four months ago to start his new role in Manchester.Find out how Tom leads with a community first mindset; humility, purpose and humour, including a commitment to staying grounded, even if that means posing for a photo next to some fly-tipping!In this episode, Lisa Morton explores what it means to lead a global city with local people at its heart. Tom shares how his experiences in Salford have shaped his approach to inclusive regeneration, why he believes that listening to community voices is key to effective policymaking, and how his family values have influenced his leadership journey.
