Dollard’s Day or La Fête de Dollard in French, is now National Patriots' Day (officially known in French as La Journée nationale des Patriotes)—a provincial holiday in Quebec observed annually on the Monday preceding May 25. National Patriots' Day commemorates the 1837-1838 Rebellions in Lower Canada. Established in 2003 by the Quebec government, this holiday replaced the older, unofficially observed Fête de Dollard which commemorates the Battle of Long Sault which occurred over a five-day period in mid-May 1660 during the Beaver Wars. It was fought between French colonial militia, led by 24 year-old garrison commander of Fort Ville-Marie (now Montreal) Adam Dollard des Ormeaux (1635-60) with their Huron and Algonquin allies, against the Iroquois Confederacy. Vastly outnumbered by the Iroquois, Dollard and his companions died, but their efforts were not in vain, for the action delayed the Iroquois advance and imminent attack on Montreal. For these reasons, Dollard is regarded as an iconic figure in the history of Quebec and one of the saviours of New France. Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)

Nicole O'Byrne speaks with Colin Coates about his book, Political Culture in Louis XIV's Canada. In Louis XIV's New France, colonial authorities attempted to reproduce French regal authority in novel ways, often by performing typical metropolitan political rituals. When these practices were transposed into the St Lawrence Valley settlements, where a small French population lived alongside a substantial Indigenous presence, they took on new meanings. The colony of Canada replicated many features of the developing French absolutist state. Yet while the king likely knew more about his colony than he did about most parts of metropolitan France, this transatlantic setting imposed new constraints on absolutist authority, from the challenges of distance to an Indigenous population that largely lived outside European norms. Political Culture in Louis XIV's Canada examines royal power as it was represented in ritual (ceremonial entrances, Te Deums, processions), in rhetoric (political disputes over cabals and factions), and in objects (portraits, royal busts, currency, buildings, maps, and censuses). Colin M. Coates is professor of Canadian studies and history at York University and author of The Metamorphoses of Landscape and Community in Early Quebec. If you like our work, please consider supporting it: bit.ly/support_WTY. In this unexpectedly heavy episode of Canada Is Boring, Rhys and Jesse dig into a part of Canadian history most people never hear about: Canada's 200‑year relationship with slavery. While many Canadians grow up hearing about the Underground Railroad and Canada as a safe haven, Rhys reveals a much darker past—from New France-era slavery to British rule, and the brutal legal framework that allowed slavery to exist in Canada.Rhys and Jesse take a hard left turn from jokes into one of the darkest and least‑discussed parts of Canadian history: slavery in Canada. From New France's Code Noir to household slaves as status symbols, from Marie‑Joseph Angélique and Chloe Cooley to the slow legal death of slavery by the 1820s, this episode challenges the myth of Canada as the purely “good guy” of North American history. In the STD Zone, Jesse debriefs his recent trip to Cuba—tourism, cash chaos, and the everyday realities behind the resorts. During the summer of 1609, Samuel de Champlain attempted to form better relations and alliances with the local First Nations tribes including Wendat-Hurons, Algonquins, and Montagnais who lived in the area of the St. Lawrence River. These tribes sought Champlain's help in their war against the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy, League or Five Nations. The founder of New France set off with his men to explore the Rivière des Iroquois—now known as the Richelieu River—and became the first known European to lay eyes on and map one of the continent’s majestic bodies of water, named Lake Champlain in his honor. Episode 390: When most Canadians think of occult-related witch trials, their minds drift south to Salem, Massachusetts, or across the ocean to medieval Europe. The popular narrative suggests that Canada, with its reputation for tolerance and peace, remained untouched by the supernatural hysteria that gripped other nations. This perception, deeply embedded in the Canadian consciousness, paints our country as somehow above the dark chapters of witch-hunting that stained other societies. Even Dark Poutine listeners, well-versed in the country's hidden crimes and forgotten tragedies, might be surprised to learn the truth. The reality is far different from this comfortable myth. Canada has a complex and largely forgotten history of witchcraft accusations, trials, and legal persecution spanning over 350 years—from the earliest days of New France to as recently as 2018. From demonic possessions in Quebec City to fraudulent psychics in modern Ontario, the Canadian witch trial story is one of fear, prejudice, and the persistent human tendency to blame the margins of society for inexplicable troubles. At its peak around 1712, New France was a vast territory in North America that stretched from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains and from Hudson Bay down to the Gulf of America. This immense territory was divided into five main colonies: Canada, Acadia, Newfoundland, Hudson Bay, and Louisiana—encompassing the vast interior of today’s United States, including the Mississippi River valley. However, French settlement was sparse, making New France an enormous zone of influence rather than a densely populated area. New France’s government under the French Crown consisted of a Sovereign Council consisting of three major officials: a Governor General, an Intendant and a Bishop, and a number of minor officials, including five councilors, an attorney-general and a clerk. He established a number of Forts on the shores of the Great Lakes and engaged in a series of battles against the English and the Iroquois Confederacy for control of the fur trade.
