Send us a textWe are human beings, not human doings. And sometimes, the doing doesn't happen. That doesn't mean the being isn't exactly, perfectly on time. This episode of Masterful Listening is a powerful invitation to slow down and remember who you are beneath the noise. I'm joined by Patrick Tam, Vice President of Operational Excellence at ServiceNow, professor, father, and one of the most heart-centered humans I know.Patrick and I first met years ago when he was a student in one of my classes. I later became his coach, and working with him has been one of the greatest honors of my career. He reminds me, consistently, what it means to lead with integrity, humility, and humanity—all while navigating high-level success. This conversation isn't about titles or performance. It's about presence. It's about creating a life that feels real, not just impressive. It's about slowing down enough to actually listen—to yourself, to others, to what matters. Tune in for powerful reflections, unexpected wisdom, and a glimpse into what leadership looks like when it's rooted in being. The audio isn't perfect. Life isn't either. But the frequency of this one? It's undeniable.
Hello and welcome to Episode 61. Today, we return to Baker Street – or should that be Montague Street? – for another memoir of Sherlock Holmes, ‘The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual' (1893). Read the story here: https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php/The_Adventure_of_the_Musgrave_Ritual The episode will be uploaded to our YouTube channel soon, where you can listen with closed captions. In the meantime, you can subscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@doingsofdoyle And follow us on BlueSky (https://bsky.app/profile/doingsofdoyle.com). We don't do Twitter no more. Synopsis Whilst tidying his papers in the Baker Street flat, Sherlock Holmes unearths some relics of one of his earliest cases. His client, an old university associate called Reginald Musgrave, hires the nascent detective to investigate the recent disappearances of Hurlstone's butler and one of the housemaids. It is quite clear, however, that this is no elopement, and central to the mystery is the old family catechism known as the Musgrave Ritual… Next time on Doings of Doyle... We hope to be joined by journalist and author Andrew Finkel to discuss his novel The Adventure of the Second Wife… Support the podcast Please help us reach new listeners by leaving a rating or view on the podcast platform of your choice. The Mindful Healers Podcast with Dr. Jessie Mahoney and Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang
What does non-striving in mindfulness mean? What is the invitation of non-striving? Why might you want to try it? Non-striving isn't about giving up aspirations and goals, it is about letting go. Letting go of control, of needing things to be a certain way, and/or to get a certain outcome. Non Striving is about patience, peace, presence, joy and transformation. Instead of constantly doing, non-striving is about focusing on being. Non-striving is allowing yourself to experience the moment without judgment. It creates space to simply be rather than always reacting to try to change things. We are human BEINGS, not human DOINGS. “Being is where the magic and healing happen.” - Dr. Holly MacKenna Non-striving involves accepting yourself as you are and others as they are. It is about being content where you are, without the need to be anyone else or anywhere else. Non-striving increases the richness in your life. It helps you find the extraordinary in the ordinary. The space opened up in non-striving opens portals to clarity, curiosity, creativity, and connection. Where are some areas of life that you would like to adopt a non-striving attitude? What are some ways you might try non-striving? What could you commit to not doing? What would more “being” look like? Move beyond consuming this amazing podcast. FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real When I first saw this acronym, a BIG light bulb went off. For the first time, I realized that there's absolutely ZERO truth behind the door of our fear. Although WHAT we fear isn't real, the WHY behind our fear is. …and a lot of it has to do with the lies we believe or the lie-based stories we tell ourselves. So, what do you do when you feel trapped by your fear? Today's Guest answers this question and then some. This week, I sit down with 22-year U.S. Navy Veteran, Executive Director of Warfighter Advance, and Internationally Recognized Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Mary Vieten. For decades, this woman has helped American war heroes overcome their fears and severe levels of trauma. She's going to break down how we can master ours. Dr. Mary draws from personal stories and real-life experiences while she unpacks a range of topics from hilarious military moments to serious mental health concerns. Join us as we reflect on the strength of overcoming fear and trauma, as well as the significance of showing up for those who come to us in times of need. If you want to overcome your fears more confidently and consistently, then don't miss today's episode. In this episode, you'll hear: What to do when you feel like you're trapped by your fear. Signs that you're dealing with unresolved trauma. How you could be a better citizen, friend, and family member in today's crazy world. Importance of faith, forgiveness, empathy, genuine relationships, and unconditional positive regard in the healing process. The unfortunate case of a military man's struggle with the mental health system's over-reliance on medication. The power of overcoming fear and trauma and how societal conditioning often instills fear of our own feelings. Dr. Mary's plea to shift from living as human doings to thriving as human beings. Key Quotes When someone is sharing their struggle with you, your first response shouldn't be, ‘You should talk to someone.' It should be to tell yourself to ‘shut up and listen.' - Dr. Mary Vieten Instead of retreating from your fear, look at it. - Dr. Mary Vieten The answers to our challenges are already built into our body and brain - we just don't take the time to access them. - Dr. Mary Vieten We need to be more focused on being human BEings, not human DOings and TALKings. - Dr. Mary Vieten Connect with Dr. Mary Website: www.warfighteradvance.org Medicating Normal Movie: www.medicatingnormal.com Facebook: @warfighteradvancereintegration | https://www.facebook.com/warfighteradvancereintegration Instagram: @warfighter_advance | https://www.instagram.com/warfighter_advance/ LinkedIn: @warfighter-advance | https://www.linkedin.com/company/warfighter-advance%E2%84%A2/ Connect with J.R. It transpires that a document of great moment – an intemperate letter written by an incautious foreign potentate – has gone missing from Hope's dispatch box. It must be traced and returned if disastrous consequences are to be avoided. Holmes is rapidly on the scent and believes that one of only three conspiratorial agents – Eduardo Lucas, La Rothiere and Hugo Oberstein – could be involved. The investigative waters, however, are very soon muddied by an unexpected intervention from Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope and the brutal murder of Eduardo Lucas at his Westminster home – a case which falls on Inspector Lestrade, who calls Holmes' attention to a curious discrepancy and a misplaced rug… Next time on Doings of Doyle… We look at Conan Doyle's druidical mystery, ‘The Blood-Stone Tragedy', published in Cassell's Saturday Journal in 1884, which was, for a long time, lost to modern readers. Yet even in the wilderness he cannot find complete solitude. In a neighbouring cave he encounters an established hermit, Paul of Nicopolis. Their discourse however proves short-lived as Paul is a follower of the rival Arian philosophy. One evening, two years into his retreat, Simon's peace is disturbed by the fleeting appearance of an oddly conformed stranger. The next morning, the plain beneath his refuge is covered by a vast multitude of horsemen heading steadily westwards… Next time on Doings of Doyle We return to Baker Street for ‘The Adventure of the Second Stain' (1904). This episode, we welcome to the podcast Professor Roger Luckhurst to talk about his new edition of Round the Red Lamp (1894) for the Edinburgh University Press, and plenty of Gothic too. About Roger Luckhurst Roger Luckhurst is the Geoffrey Tillotson Chair of Nineteenth-Century Studies at Birkbeck, University of London. He is the author of ten monographs and has edited many works of classic nineteenth century Gothic, including key works by Rider Haggard, Henry James, Stevenson, Stoker and Conan Doyle. Listeners to the Doings of Doyle podcast will have heard us make reference to his Science Fiction: A Literary History (2017) The Mummy's Curse (2012) and his excellent book Gothic: An Illustrated History which came out in 2021. He can be found on X as @TheProfRog. Visit Roger's page at Birkbeck, University of London here. Round the Red Lamp (Edinburgh Edition of the Works of Arthur Conan Doyle, 2024) An often overlooked collection in Arthur Conan Doyle's career, these tales actually track the vital moment in his life when he decided to shift careers from provincial medic to celebrated London author Detailed introduction, notes and scholarly apparatus Appendixes that collect extra medical tales, Conan Doyle's early contributions to the medical press and the two one-act plays that he produced from two of the stories, including one of his greatest successes for the stage, Waterloo Introduction provides the medical context to help understand its place in Conan Doyle's career This is a scholarly edition of Arthur Conan Doyle's controversial collection of medical tales, first published in 1894 in the first flush of his fame. Conan Doyle had trained in medicine at Edinburgh University in the 1870s, and then spent eight years as a General Practitioner in Southsea, before deciding to become a professional author in 1890. The stories he collected in Round the Red Lamp are gathered from his medical training and incidents in his life as a provincial GP. Some of the stories are daring – dealing explicitly with child birth, sexually transmitted diseases and malpractice. Some are sentimental or comic vignettes. Some are Gothic horrors. On publication the shades of dark and light bewildered some of his readers and the medical realism outraged others. Round the Red Lamp is a vital collection in understanding Conan Doyle's shift of profession from medic to author. (Source: Edinburgh university Press website) Purchase from the publisher here. Your Heard Tell Show is turning down the noise of the news cycle and getting to the information we need to discern our times by covering the latest news from outer space, or at least what man is doing to keep going up there. Our own resident space expert Dr. Michael Siegel returns to Heard Tell to talk about NASA and Boeing's Starliner finally getting a crew off the ground, Space X's Starship going up and coming back in (mostly) one piece, and the inevitable comparisons between the two. Plus, since both missions had issues, Michael discusses from his own experience being on the team that runs a spacecraft mission what it is like to problem solve and issue in space. Plus we talk about the evolution of rockets, the realities of moon and Mars colonization, and the future of space, NASA, and mankind's eternal quest to go to the stars.
