You can trace a skate scene through its spots, but you understand it through the people who built it. We sit down at Kona Skate Park in Jacksonville, Florida with Rick Andrade, a longtime skater born and raised in Austin, Texas, who started skating in the summer of 1986 and carried that energy everywhere his Navy career took him. From backyard mini ramps and ditch sessions to the influence of Bones Brigade and classic skate videos like The End, Rick explains why he always leaned toward going fast, going big, and making it look right. Then we get into the real Jacksonville skateboarding history: Skate Asylum days, Kona memories, road trips, and the DIY grind that turns a tight crew into something bigger. Rick breaks down how Legacy Skateboards comes together, from blank decks and hand-cut stickers to contests, demos, and the “Legacy crew” reputation that followed them across Florida. Along the way, we swap stories about growing up, getting hurt, finding balance, and what it feels like to return to skating after life shifts into marriage, kids, and a career that demands you move. We also nerd out on skateboard setups for anyone who cares about what actually works under your feet: board sizes, wheel sizes, OJ vs Spitfire vs Bones, Independent trucks, risers, and bushing combos that help you stay stable at speed. Finally, we tackle the big question about modern skateboarding media: did Instagram and instant clips “break” skateboarding around 2013, or did it open the door for more skaters and smaller brands to get seen worldwide? If you're into skateboarding culture, skate history, Kona Skate Park stories, or the intersection of a military life and a lifelong skate habit, this one hits home. Subscribe, share this with a friend who still talks about VHS premieres, and leave a review so more skaters can find the show.

Our guest purchased the assets of planemaker Sonex and restarted the company. In the news, Customs and Border Protection officers at airports, Eclipse 500 spare parts availability, a Spitfire kit plane, recreating cockpit voice recorder audio from spectrograms, and a new website to track ATC modernization progress. Guest Stephen Osborne is the owner and founder of Top Aviation Services and the president and CEO of The Osborne Company. Shortly after planemaker Sonex shut down, he purchased its assets and reopened operations as Sonex Aviation LLC. Sonex has a history of providing the recreational aviation community with innovative and affordable aircraft kits, powerplants, and accessories. The company is a leader in the homebuilt space and works to cultivate new pilots and airplane builders through educational efforts. Stephen describes how he quickly moved to purchase the Sonex assets, resume shipping kits, and set the tone for the company’s future. Sonex has a strong “work family” environment that serves not only employees but also customers and vendors. As Sonex moves forward, its success will be built on those core values and the mission to make aviation affordable for everyone. Stephen is a military veteran and former U.S. Army Captain and FAA-certificated commercial pilot. Top Aviation provides FAA-certified flight training for Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, and Commercial, as well as discovery flights and aircraft rentals at KTOP in Topeka, Kansas. The Osborne Company is a general contracting firm specializing in the design and installation of electric vehicle and aircraft charging infrastructure across the United States. Aviation News Feds Mull Pulling Customs From New York, LA, Chicago, and Other Airports in ‘Sanctuary Cities' Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has suggested removing Customs and Border Protection officers from airports in so-called sanctuary cities where local authorities do not assist federal immigration investigations. Those cities include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco international hubs. In a recent congressional hearing, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, “We shouldn't shut down air travel in a state that doesn't agree with our politics.” Airlines and business groups warn of chaos if US restricts international flights In a joint statement, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Airlines for America, the National Retail Federation, U.S. Travel, and other groups said the move “threatens to cause unnecessary chaos throughout the nation’s air transportation system.” “Any reduction in Customs and Border Protection operations at major U.S. gateway airports threatens to cause unnecessary chaos throughout the nation's air transportation system. International aviation networks are highly interconnected, and operational changes at a small number of gateway airports will quickly ripple across the country, negatively impacting travelers, cargo shipments, supply chains, and the communities that depend on those connections. Airports and airlines rely on stable, predictable federal inspection services to keep people and commerce moving safely and efficiently. We urge DHS to avoid actions that would create unnecessary operational and economic consequences for communities nationwide. As the United States prepares for growing international travel demand, DHS should avoid actions that would create unnecessary bottlenecks and economic consequences for communities across the country. Now is the time to strengthen America's gateway infrastructure, not weaken it.” See also, Airlines urge Trump administration not to curb international flights in feud over ‘sanctuary cities' Eclipse Aero Says It Has about 3 Years of Parts in Stock Eclipse supplier Resurgent Aviation Solutions (RAS) says on its webpage that the company “has elected to wind down all business operations and liquidate all remaining assets. All finished goods will be made available for outright purchase using an auction format. The liquidation will be completed over several auctions over the next two months.” Spitfire could return to production 90 years after first flight An original Supermarine Spitfire will set you back about £3 million. The new Aerolite Spitfire Type 433 has been constructed at a cost of about £750,000. The composite kit plane is touring the UK this spring and summer at air shows and military and classic motor festivals. Great British Supermarine Ltd, is the manufacturer. Chief executive Jeremy Meeson, said: “The moment is right to reimagine the Supermarine Spitfire because today's materials, propulsion, and digital engineering finally let us evolve an icon without losing what made it exceptional.” A PDF let the internet hear the final words in the cockpit of a UPS plane as it crashed. The NTSB now wants it taken down The NTSB does not release cockpit voice recordings made during an accident. Other evidence from investigations is released to the public, including photographs, videos, maps, and other data. During a two-day investigative hearing on the UPS flight 2976 accident, a PDF file was released that showed an analysis of the spectrogram of the audio recorded by the CVR. However, the NTSB was not aware “that advances in image recognition and computational methods have enabled individuals to reconstruct approximations of cockpit voice recorder audio from sound spectrum imagery.” Subsequently, the NTSB closed public access to all dockets. The best veterinary practices are not remembered because of their ultrasound machine. They are remembered because of how they make people feel. There's an energy to remarkable practices. A personality. A story. A sense of identity that clients trust and teams rally behind. And yet most practices completely overlook one of the most powerful tools they have to shape that perception: design. In this episode, I explore why branding is really about storytelling, meaning and emotional connection - and why the practices that win attention in the future will be the ones bold enough to stand apart.Using the story of the legendary Spitfire aircraft - and my own recent experience flying one - I unpack why some things become iconic while others are forgotten. Why beauty, emotion and storytelling matter. And why the practices that stand out in today's veterinary market are the ones brave enough to express who they really are.We explore how great branding creates differentiation, strengthens culture, attracts the right people, and reinforces the story your practice is trying to tell every single day.Because your culture is what people feel. Your operations are what people experience. But your brand? What drives the passion behind flying and preserving some of the world's most iconic military aircraft? And how can air shows inspire the next generation of aviators, engineers and defence personnel? Find out in this episode of the Defence Connect Podcast as senior journalist Robert Dougherty is joined by aerobatic pilot and renowned warbird aviation enthusiast Paul Bennet, founder of Paul Bennet Airshows. Fresh from preparation flights for Australia's largest regional air show, Wings Over Shellharbour 2026, Bennet discusses his lifelong passion for aviation, which began with model aircraft and evolving into flying aerobatic aircraft and some of the world's most recognisable warbirds. Bennet operates and flies an extensive collection of historic and aerobatic aircraft, including the Hawker Sea Fury, de Havilland Vampire, F4U Corsair, CAC Wirraway, T-28 Trojan, Grumman Avenger and two Yak-52 aircraft. He maintains the collection while regularly flying Mustang, Kitty Hawk and Hurricane fighters alongside competing in aerobatics and performing internationally. Drawing on decades of experience in aviation operations, aircraft ownership and international air show performances, Bennet discusses the engineering, maintenance and operational realities of preserving historic military aircraft while promoting aviation to future generations. The podcast conversation includes the following topics: The origins of Bennet's passion for aviation, aerobatics and warbird aircraft. Flying characteristics and performance differences between aircraft, including the Sea Fury, Spitfire, Mustang and early jet aircraft such as the Vampire. The operational challenges of maintaining historic military aircraft, including sourcing parts, engineering replacements and preserving authenticity. Australia's warbird preservation community, aviation museums and the importance of supporting historic aircraft collections. The rarity and restoration difficulties associated with Axis aircraft such as the Japanese Zero and German Bf 109. The role of air shows in promoting aviation, defence recruitment and STEM education pathways for young Australians. Comparisons between Australian, US and South Korean air show culture and military participation. Opportunities for collaboration between the defence industry, aviation enthusiasts and advanced manufacturing supply chains in Australia as well as the give and take of working with the Australian Defence Force. Career pathways into aviation, including military aviation, commercial flying, aerobatics and flight instruction. Finally, the discussion explores the future of Australian air shows, the importance of growing aviation engagement nationally, and Bennet's ambitions to continue expanding both his aircraft collection and international air show presence.

In this episode of the Defence Connect Podcast, senior journalist Robert Dougherty is joined by Keith Russell, owner and pilot of the Whitsunday Spitfire, a 90 per cent scale reproduction of the iconic World War II Mk26B Spitfire aircraft. Formerly known as the Port Hedland Spitfire and White Gum Spitfire, Russell's aircraft recently appeared at Warbirds Over Scone 2026 in NSW and Warbirds Over Wānaka in New Zealand. Russell is also the former owner of Golden Eagle Airlines, a regional airline previously operating out of Derby, Western Australia, and has spent decades immersed in aviation operations and historic aircraft. Drawing on his experiences flying both reproduction and original wartime Spitfires, including a two-seat Spitfire flight at Duxford in 2005, Russell discusses the engineering, handling and passion behind operating one of the world's most recognisable fighter aircraft. The podcast conversation includes the following topics: How the reproduction Spitfire compares to original wartime aircraft in handling, flight dynamics and pilot experience. The engineering evolution of the aircraft, including modern modifications, experimental aviation regulations and replica aircraft manufacturing. The strong international warbird community and the passion driving private ownership of historic military aircraft. Operational realities of flying tailwheel aircraft, aerobatics and maintaining aviation discipline and safety. Paint schemes, restoration authenticity and the challenges of balancing historical accuracy with personal customisation. The role of innovation in aviation, from handcrafted aircraft design through to CNC manufacturing and experimental engineering. Finally, the discussion explores the nature of warfare with older aircraft making a return to defeat drones and autonomous systems during the conflict in Ukraine. This episode of Airchats offers a profound and surprisingly witty look into the life of John Nichol, a former RAF Tornado navigator whose life changed forever during the first Gulf War. Sam Macadam sits down with Nichol to discuss his latest book, The Blitz, while navigating the harrowing yet formative memories of being shot down over Iraq and held as a prisoner of war. Nichol moves beyond the standard "war story" monologue to explore the psychological realities of combat, the intense trust required in a two-man cockpit, and why he views his darkest moments as the catalyst for his successful second act as a best-selling author. Nichol's perspective is a masterclass in grounded resilience. He eschews the label of "hero," instead framing his survival and his subsequent return to the RAF as simply "doing the job" he was paid to do. Through his vivid storytelling, viewers gain a unique vantage point on the evolution of military aviation—from paper maps and manual navigation to the modern era of computer-guided strikes—and the timeless human spirit that connects veterans across generations, from the Spitfire pilots of WWII to the bomb disposal experts of today. Good morning. There have been some notable anniversaries in the news recently. Fighter plane extraordinaire, the Spitfire – star of the Battle of Britain – turned 90 this year. One former RAF air controller described the aircraft as epitomising “the spirit, backbone and sheer bloody-mindedness of a tiny island whose people would not give up and would never surrender”. Rousing stuff. There have been other rheumy-eyed retrospectives too. Queen Elizabeth II was born 100 years ago this year, and it has plausibly been said of her late Majesty that she represented the very last stable myth of this nation. Beyond these shores, this year marks 250 years since the founding of the United States of America, and 25 years since the attacks of 9/11. Two very different kinds of anniversary, for sure. But both have come freshly into view over the last few months, since the war with Iran. The word “anniversary” comes from the Latin anniversarius, meaning “returning yearly”. It names those moments in the year when time circles back on itself. Originally, in medieval Christian usage, anniversaries referred to a death: an anniversary Mass. But arguably, even the most joyful commemoration is a kind of mourning, in recognising that something has now passed into history. Perhaps that sounds a bit bleak. But I make the observation with feeling, as someone who's just turned fifty. I marked that personal milestone with a dinner that brought together loved ones from each decade of my life: earliest school friends; others from university, work, and beyond; my three daughters too, who are (to my slight astonishment) now grown up enough to help host. It was wonderful. But taking stock at my fiftieth, it struck me that all anniversaries, whether public or private, involve a curious kind of double vision. They obviously ask us to look backwards, which can be a heady business, given that even sharing happy memories may be a way of feeling sad, for reminding us of good times now gone. Less obviously, though, anniversaries invite us to look forwards. They're more than an occasion for nostalgia or handwringing. Recollection is also about reckoning. By pausing our ever-hectic lives, anniversaries allow us to think about the future through lessons we have learned from the past: as individuals, a society, a whole human race. They might, in that sense, be seen as calendared response to the psalmist's prayer: ““Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom”. Remembering may fill us with gratitude or regret, but it also sharpens our sense of what's still worth doing and preserving – as well as, what is yet worth striving for.

Interview with Chris Frostad, CEO, Purepoint UraniumOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/purepoint-uranium-tsxvptu-6m-premium-raise-isoenergy-backing-boosts-dorado-expansion-8234Recording date: 4th of March 2026Purepoint Uranium has established a distinctive position in uranium exploration through strategic partnerships with industry majors, enabling systematic discovery work across Saskatchewan's Athabasca Basin while minimizing shareholder dilution. The company operates 9-10 projects primarily through joint ventures with Cameco, Orano, and IsoEnergy, earning operator fees while maintaining meaningful equity participation. The partnership model allows Purepoint to deploy significantly more capital than traditional junior explorers. CEO Chris Frostad explained the company can "put $5, $10, $15 million in the ground" while paying only its proportionate share and earning fees for project management. This structure proved critical during uranium's downturn, providing capital continuity when many peers struggled to maintain operations.Purepoint's portfolio includes three principal holdings: 27% of Smart Lake alongside Cameco, 21% of Hook Lake with Cameco and Orano, and a 50-50 partnership with IsoEnergy covering consolidated mine trend properties. The Hook Lake project hosts the Spitfire discovery, a 15-20 million pound deposit that remains below major producer development thresholds but validates the geological potential.Recent success centers on the Nova Discovery at the Dorado project with IsoEnergy. Summer 2025 drilling intersected high-grade mineralisation across four holes testing five-six distinct targets. A 4,500-meter winter program resumed in January 2026, with results expected throughout the year as the company systematically expands understanding of the mineralized system.Capital deployment is accelerating as major partners demonstrate increased urgency. Purepoint expects to deploy approximately $8 million in 2026, potentially doubling to $16 million in 2027. This reflects broader industry dynamics as producers respond to tightening supply fundamentals, highlighted by Cameco's 22 million pound contract to India while western utilities remain passive in securing long-term supply.Frostad characterized the investment opportunity succinctly: "Uranium is not a cycle anymore. This is a get-rich slow thing now, which is fine as part of your portfolio." The methodical, partner-aligned approach prioritizes systematic value creation over headline-driven drilling campaigns.Learn more: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/purepoint-uranium-group-incSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Episode Summary:In this episode of Explaining History, Nick explores the agonizing political and strategic choices faced by Great Britain in the 1930s.Why did the British government delay rearmament for so long? Drawing on Daniel Todman's Britain's War: Into Battle, we examine how the shadow of the First World War and the Great Depression shaped the policy of appeasement. Nick argues that the "caution" of the Baldwin and Chamberlain governments wasn't just cowardice; it was a desperate attempt to avoid the "total war" that would require the complete subordination of freedom and prosperity to the state. From the technological leap from biplanes to monoplanes to the "imperial overstretch" that left Singapore and Palestine vulnerable, we delve into the global chessboard of the late 30s. How did the need to defend an empire spanning the globe leave Britain dangerously exposed in Europe? And why was the fall of Singapore written into the strategic compromises of the 1920s?Plus: Details on our upcoming Nazi Germany Masterclass in March!Key Topics:The Rearmament Debate: Why a "Churchillian" surge in 1935 might have failed.Technological Change: The shift from fabric biplanes to the Spitfire and Hurricane.Imperial Overstretch: The impossible task of defending the UK, the Mediterranean, and the Far East simultaneously. The Palestine Mandate: How the Arab Revolt of 1936 tied down British troops needed elsewhere.Books Mentioned:Britain's War: Into Battle (1937-1941) by Daniel TodmanEnglish History 1914-1945 by A.J.P. "We're not just telling stories anymore—we're helping people make sense of the world."That's the powerful message behind this week's episode of Nonprofit Nation featuring Kristen Grimm, founder and strategist of Spitfire Strategies, a leading communications firm that helps nonprofits, foundations, and social changemakers sharpen their voice and deepen their impact. In this conversation, Kristen introduces the concept of “meaning-making” — the process of helping people interpret what's happening around them, understand what it means, and decide how to act. With the world experiencing unprecedented levels of uncertainty, polarization, and complexity, Kristen argues that communicators now face a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help people cut through the noise and find clarity, purpose, and direction.Drawing on her recently published meaning-making blog series, Kristen shares a timely roadmap for nonprofit leaders looking to rise above the chaos and communicate with resonance. You'll hear about the different phases of meaning-making, how to spot a "meaning-making window" when it opens, and why now is the time to shift from persuasion to perspective-shaping.
Hollywood got it wrong: The Spitfire was not the work of one man.Aviation historian Paul Beaver dismantles the myths created by the Hollywood film, First of the Few. He reveals that while Mitchell was a brilliant engineer, the idea of him single-handedly designing the Spitfire is a fantasy. Instead, the aircraft was the result of a collaborative, unsung team at Supermarine.Discover how films distort historical truths and why figures like Mitchell and Alan Turing are often misrepresented to create a more dramatic narrative. Paul Beaver exposes a compelling, untold story of engineering genius, collaboration, and a team of unsung heroes who truly built the Spitfire.A Team, Not a Single HeroWhile Mitchell was a brilliant engineer and a visionary team leader, the Spitfire was the product of a dedicated team at Supermarine. Beaver highlights key figures who deserve recognition:Alf Faddy: The head of the design team, who sketched the initial plans with Mitchell.Beverly Shenstone: An engineer who contributed his expertise in wing design, leading to the aircraft's famous elliptical wing.Joe Smith: The man who later became Supermarine's chief designer in 1941.George Pickering and Geoffrey Quill: The crucial test pilots who risked their lives to develop the aircraft.A More Nuanced LegacyPaul argues for a more truthful understanding of Mitchell's legacy. Mitchell, who died at the age of 42 in 1937, was a prolific engineer with 24 different aircraft types to his name. His work extended far beyond the Spitfire, including designs for bombers and seaplanes. He even famously redesigned a colostomy bag after his surgery, showing his relentless engineering mindset.Ready to challenge everything you thought you knew about the Spitfire? A shorter episode this week but that makes it the perfect length to listen to on your way to Holiday Shopping. This week we go uplifting as we dig into the life of Beatrice 'Tillie' Shilling. The child of a master butcher and one of thre girls born and raised in the South of England, she spent her pocket money on tools and penknives, deconstructed devices to see how they fit together and worked and played with Meccano sets, early construction toys allowing children to build working models of cars and cranes. She would even win a competition for building from these kits. By the age of 14, she bought her first motorcycle originally to beat her sisters in bike races. But she tuned, tinkered and replaced every single part remaking the machine and soon was speeding around on it everywhere. She began to study practical electronics and work in the field as young as 15, even going on to become an Engineer (in the 1930's when women just didn't do such things). We cover the life of this amazing woman and how she saved both the Spitfire and the Hurricane, earned an OBE and hit the ton at Brooklands as a motorcycle racer in this uplifting, girl powerm yes it's in Surrey but there's no fringe on top episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.
