Despite this season's lack of snow, Waymo, the autonomous ride share company, says their robotaxis-in-training are still learning how to drive in Denver winters. Then, Stella's Coffee Haus recently announced they are cutting off Wi-Fi at their shop, which has us wondering — should coffee shops even have Wi-Fi? And what's the etiquette for working-from-coffeehouse? Host Bree Davies and producer Olivia Jewell Love and contributor Michelle Jackson to dish on these stories, and of course deliver the wins and fails of the week. Bree talked about the dangerous intersection in Cherry Hills and Dyketopia's March 22 show. Olivia mentioned Denver's bison transfer to Native tribes and the stinky smells at the Lowry Town Center. Michelle discussed the impending snowfall and Colorado's tourism attention on Canada.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter at denver.citycast.fm. Scot Lowry — Managing Partner and Co-Founder of PromiseONE CompaniesScot is the Managing Partner and Co-Founder of PromiseONE Companies, a Cleveland-based investment firm that helps purpose-driven entrepreneurs acquire and grow established businesses through Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition, or ETA. Prior to launching PromiseONE, Scot acquired and led Fathom, a digital marketing firm he grew more than 450% over a decade — an experience that became both the financial engine and talent incubator behind PromiseONE's long-term portfolio strategy. Today, Scot also serves as the Richard Osborne Professor of Entrepreneurship at Case Western Reserve University, where he teaches acquisition entrepreneurship and helps steward one of the nation's longest-standing ETA programs. In our conversation, Scot and I explore Cleveland's unique “right to win” in ETA and the decades-long lineage that traces back to his mentor, Richard Osborne. We talk about what it truly means to become a credible buyer, how to earn the trust of legacy sellers, and why understanding what matters most to them is the foundation of great dealmaking. We unpack the evolution of PromiseONE's patient capital model, the philosophy of “your dream is my dream,” and how Scot has helped multiple operators transition from employee to business owner. We also discuss negotiation, long-term ownership versus traditional private equity, mentorship, and a deeply personal crucible moment that reshaped Scot's leadership philosophy and sense of purpose.Scot is a thoughtful entrepreneur, investor, and teacher, and this was a really meaningful conversation — please enjoy.00:00 Introduction to Promise Partners and Scott Lowry03:08 Cleveland's Right to Win in Entrepreneurship05:51 The Role of Richard Osborne and Promise Partners08:57 Building Credibility as a Buyer12:07 The Evolution of Promise One Companies14:55 Understanding Legacy Sellers18:04 The Importance of Relationships in Deal Making20:55 Navigating the Acquisition Process23:48 Lessons from Fathom's Growth and Leadership27:06 The Philosophy Behind Promise One's Model37:56 Choosing the Path of Entrepreneurship40:06 Building a Community of Entrepreneurs43:13 Incubating New Business Ideas46:04 The Promise Partners Model48:46 Long-Term Vision and Patient Capital51:53 The Art of Deal Making56:03 Teaching and Mentoring Future Entrepreneurs01:00:13 Reflections on Personal Growth and Purpose-----LINKS:https://promiseone.com/about-us/https://case.edu/weatherhead/academics/entrepreneurship-through-acquisitionhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/scotlowry/-----SPONSOR:Roundstone Insurance — https://roundstoneinsurance.com/Roundstone Insurance is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land. In case you slept through it, a predawn lunar eclipse occurred at 5:38AM CST this morning (Tuesday, March 3). The “Worm Moon” (as dubbed by the astronomy community) is a nod to earthworms which tend to emerge from the ground at this time of year during winter thawing. Anyone living south of I-20 knows a thing or two about thawing of late.  Air conditioners here in the deep South have also emerged from hibernation after a recent wave of 80+ degree temperatures – even before the end of February. As can happen during these full moon events, the weekend featured a number of rather unusual sports stories. Women’s half-marathon in Atlanta ended with a surprise finish Sunday’s women’s Half Marathon Championship in Atlanta provided a lead vehicle in front of the leaders pack.  These are commonly used for races in major cities.  With a little more than one mile to go in the race, the top three women runners followed such a vehicle. Unfortunately, it led the top trio off the race course and down the wrong street! The other runners in the field quickly noted the error, made the proper turn, and proceeded on toward the finish line. The confused race leader needed about 60 seconds to notice that she was running the wrong way.  She and the other two leaders quickly made a U-turn.  Those unfortunate detour required almost two minutes in order to return to the original course route.  By then, the confused trio of competitors would complete the race in 9th, 12th and 13th place. The top prize of $20,000 went to another runner. This threesome of wayward runners filed an immediate protest afterwards.  It was denied. Officials claimed that the entry form clearly required each runner to know the race layout prior to the start of the competition. What about that lead vehicle?  Ironically, the vehicle was provided by the host city’s Atlanta Track Club. Driving in a big city like Atlanta can be challenging, but that was downright embarrassing. USC’s 26-year old (!) top scoring basketball player is no longer with the team The 18-11 USC Trojans men’s basketball team has lost five straight games.  After the team’s weekend loss to #12 Nebraska, USC announced that its 19 point-per game starting forward was no longer with the team. Chad Baker-Mazara went down with an apparent injury early in the second half of Southern Cal’s 82-67 home loss to the surprising Cornhuskers on Saturday. Instead of sitting down on the team’s bench, the 6’7” basketball player was found sitting in the stands near the bench between a young lady and another injured teammate. The trio was seen having a delightful chat during the second half of USC’s fifth straight loss. USC has fallen from a likely NCAA March Madness selection to a team unlikely to make the field unless they win the upcoming Big Ten basketball tournament. Second year coach Eric Musselman was unaware of the severity of Chad Baker-Mazara’s injury during the game other than the trainer telling the coach, “He couldn’t go.” Chad Baker-Mazara is from the Dominican Republic. He has played collegiately for Duquesne (Pittsburgh), San Diego State, Northwest Florida State, Auburn (2023-2025) and at USC this season.   He has a history of being rather temperamental on and off the court. The 26-year old Baker-Mazara was listed as a graduate student at Southern Cal.  However, he was drafted in late January by a professional basketball league based in Puerto Rico. Perhaps he’s had enough of those tough grad school courses at age 26 to get that degree. Famed “Bear Trap” snared PGA golfer Shane Lowry in Sunday’s final round The 15th, 16th, and 17th holes at PGA National’s Champion course are well known to professional golfers. Called “The Bear Trap” to honor course designer Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus, this trio of holes is among the most difficult on the PGA Tour.  Add a stiff Florida ocean breeze and carding a par on each of those three holes is considered a big success. The 2019 British Open champion Shane Lowry was atop the leaderboard by two shots coming into the infamous “Bear Trap” holes at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach, Florida Sunday. Lowry made a par 3 on the 15th hole to retain his lead. At the par-4 16th hole, Shane Lowry’s tee shot drifted to the right and splashed down into the adjacent lake.  A double bogey six tightened the match and allowed his playing competitors back into the game. The final “Bear Trap” obstacle was the treacherous par-3 17th hole.  With mounting pressure and gusting winds, Shane Lowry’s tee shot again drifted right and sank to the bottom of a lake.  That second consecutive double bogey also sank Lowry’s chances to win the golf tournament. Columbia’s Nico Echavarria held steady and gladly accepted his good fortune to claim a victory and paycheck of more than $1.7 million.  Shane Lowry finished in a tie for second place.  His payday of $726,000 was one million dollars less than he would have received for first place. Ouch! Thought about the weekend NFL Combine – New York Jets coach needs more sleep The woeful New York Jets will have four of the first 44 selections during Round 1 and 2 in late April’s NFL draft in Pittsburgh. Head coach Aaron Glenn finished 4-13 during his first season with the Jets in 2025.  He was in the stands watching the NFL’s annual college player combine over the weekend at Indianapolis. The NFL Combine is where potential pro draft choices showcase their ability to run fast, jump high, and sparkle in a series of drills in front of all 32 teams. The Jets coach apparently was so bored by the proceedings that he was caught briefly napping during the Combine. That’s OK, coach! I tried to watch about 15 minutes of that stuff over the weekend.  It definitely works better than No-Doze in putting you to sleep.  Zzzz. The NFL Combine can serve as a launching point for an athletically-gifted player – especially those coming from the smaller schools.  The combine also reveals weaknesses which might negatively affect your potential NFL draft value, too. Former Arkansas Razorback quarterback Taylen Green is basking in ESPN’s rays of praise Taylen Green was already ESPN’s #7 quarterback heading into the NFL Combine last weekend.  After an impressive showing, he may be moving up some teams’ draft board. Taylen Green ran a speedy 4.36 second 40-yard dash.  Zoom! He established a quarterback record with a 43 ½ inch vertical leap.  Is he playing basketball or football? Green posted a broad jump of 11′ 2”.  Why is that important for a quarterback? Welcome to the unique world of the annual NFL Scouting Combine.    Taylen Green was quarterback for an Arkansas Razorback football team which finished only 2-10 last year.  He passed for 19 touchdowns but also had 11 interceptions.   Taylen Green averaged more than 3.13 seconds from the time he received the snap until making a throw while at the University of Arkansas.  That was 4th slowest among all 136 FBS major college starting quarterbacks last season. He must to trim that statistic by a full half-second in the NFL, or he will be pummeled regularly by speedy on-coming defenders. Taylen Green may go on to have a terrific NFL career.  But, then again…??? Let’s remember a few recent first-round quarterbacks flops after being praised by the ESPN Draft Day hype train! ESPN’s enthusiastic NFL insider Mel “Hyper” Kiper practically drooled when fawning over former first round quarterback Kyler Murray in 2019.  Arizona selected Murray with the first overall pick in that year’s NFL draft. Seven years later, the Arizona Cardinals are desperately trying to trade Kyler Murray away.  He has led the team to just one playoff game over seven seasons and his contract will pay him $40 million this season.  Good luck trying to make any deal, Cardinals! In 2021, the NFL Combine shined the athletic spotlight brightly onto North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. He wowed the scouts at the combine with an exceptional ability to run fast, jump high, and leap over tall buildings in a single bound.  (Oops, wrong guy!) The San Francisco 49ers talked themselves into selecting Trey Lance with the 3rd overall selection in the first round of the 2021 draft. Sadly, Lance was a flop in his first three seasons in San Francisco.  He was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2024.  Lance was cut loose by the Cowboys after just one year in Big D.  The Los Angeles Chargers signed Lance last season to serve as a back-up to starter Justin Herbert. Don’t forget about 2023’s NFL Combine star quarterback Anthony Richardson Much like Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green, Anthony Richardson became the darling of the NFL Combine in 2023.  Richardson had finally become the starting QB for the Florida Gators in his third year at the school. He made a number of poor decisions behind center that season but was often bailed-out by his uncanny running skills.  The Gators went a pedestrian 6-6, but the team’s quarterback convinced himself that he was ready to play in the NFL. An impressive showing at the 2023 NFL Combine helped to elevate draft hype about Anthony Richardson.  He would vault all the way into the 4th overall selection by the Indianapolis Colts three years ago in 2023. After just three NFL seasons, the Colts are now practically begging someone to take Richardson off their hands right now. Anthony Richardson has started only 15 games in three years.  He has more career interceptions (13) than touchdowns (11).  Richardson suffered concussions in his rookie season from frequently running with the football.  Since then, he has dealt with a myriad of injuries. Anthony Richardson has one season left on his rookie NFL contract which pays him “only” $8.5 million in 2026.  With a relatively affordable price tag, Richardson is likely to be traded to another team willing to give him a second chance. The NFL Draft Combine nearly sunk 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was the last college football player selected in the 2022 NFL draft. “Mr. Irrelevant” (the sarcastic nickname assigned to the final person selected in each year’s NFL draft) was a very accurate and successful quarterback for three seasons at Iowa State. However, Brock Purdy’s participation in that spring’s NFL Combine produced a pedestrian 4.84 second 40-yard dash and a lackluster 27” vertical leap.  His perceived lack of athleticism caused Brock Purdy to drop further down the draft boards after an underwhelming showing at the NFL Combine. Five years later, “Mr. Irrelevant” is the 49er’s starting quarterback, has played in a Super Bowl and now earns $53 million per year. Moral of the story – Don’t place too much stock in the NFL Combine results when evaluating a future pro football player – especially at the quarterback position! The post Beware! The Worm Moon is upon us! appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.

Journals play an important role for academics. They disseminate new knowledge and separate good from bad research. They also signal competencies, reputation, and standing. Publishing in certain journals often means your work is more rigorous. It may also mean your work is more visible and gets cited more often. Plus, having your work appear in certain journals can be an important prerequisite for career advancement and it can literally affect your salary. Yet of course, these different functions can be evaluated in different ways. Not all journals score equally high or low on all these different aspects. Determining which journal is "good" or "top" becomes a complicated multidimensional riddle. We decided to ask Jason Thatcher. He is one of the most prolific authors of journal papers our field has ever seen and he has served as reviewer or editors on most if not all of them. We try to develop a simple 2x2 decision tool that helps authors identify journals that are both rigorous and prestigious, that are good for the research we do and good for our careers as well. Andy and Brendan! went LIVE on YouTube for a Victory Monday morning recording following a Ballfrogs win over Jupiter Links late Sunday night. Andy is buzzing now that the Frogs have locked up the number one seed in the TGL playoffs despite the best efforts of "Tom Sim" and Max Homa. This turned out to be a loaded weekend of pro golf with national opens across the globe and a Cognizant Classic that absolutely delivered. Shane Lowry found the water twice in "The Bear Trap," blowing a four-shot lead on the final three holes at PGA National. The Salty Boy, Nico Echavarria, came up with a birdie on the 17th to take the lead and eventually secure his third PGA Tour win. Andy and Brendan discuss Lowry's collapse and debate whether he'll find himself in another position to win on the PGA Tour any time soon. Lowry, who hasn't won a solo event in the U.S. since 2015, had a win probability of over 96% standing on the 16th tee before being the first player to hit it in the water on Sunday. Brendan gives him props for speaking to the media immediately after his round and sharing that he wanted to win in front of his daughter for the first time. Following an epic finish - and despite a poor setup at PGA National - Andy runs through the Tour's schedule and puts the Cognizant in a tier above many Signature Events and all three playoff venues this year. PJ shares an update on the yearlong "Brooks Koepka vs. Mules" contest after Koepka's first top ten finish of the season. Is the money deficit already too big for the Mules to make up? Andy and Brendan then run through results from the rest of the week, hitting on the South African Open, New Zealand Open, and the Argentina Open, where winners and top finishers earned a spot at Royal Birkdale later this year. In news, the USGA had a massive Saturday news dump in which they awarded the 2045(!!!) U.S. Open to Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Who knows if this podcast will exist in 19 years, but these two midwesterners are excited for the national championship to return to America's heartland. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Green party leader, Elizabeth May claims it's safer to move bitumen by rail than through pipelines. She has mentioned this in the House of Commons, written about it in her blog and told reporters. 'In a marine environment, diluted bitumen is, impossible to clean up.' To which Michael Lowry from Western Canada Marine Response Corporation, responds, "The biggest spill we've ever cleaned up was a diluted bitumen spill." Elizabeth May: "It wasn't dilbit." (DILuted BITumen) They were actually referring to two different products. Lowry's company was cleaning up SynBit (SYNthetic BITumen), which is lighter, more likely to float, and thus easier to clean up than dilbit. They're both diluted bitumens that are shipped through pipelines, but SynBit is a 50/50 blend of bitumen and synthetic crude oil, whereas dilbit usually consists of approximately 70% bitumen and 30% diluent. Lowry is the only one who means something other than dilbit when they mention diluted bitumen in this story. Elizabeth May: "Since it's a solid, to put it in a pipe to get it to flow, they stir in fossil fuel condensate, naphtha, butane. Imagine that they stir in lighter fluid, stir in anything they can to get this solid tar called bitumen to flow through a pipeline, but unlike upgrading, this is not a step in the process of getting to a refineable product. This is only about getting it to flow through a pipeline. At its ultimate destination, a refinery, the diluent has to be removed." May isn't endorsing the further expansion of Canada's fossil fuel sector. Her position on that is quite clear: Elizabeth May: "Don't promote fossil fuel use. Don't build fossil fuel infrastructure - full stop - because of the climate crisis." However if you are going to do it anyway: Elizabeth May: "Our coastal waters are very, very much more at risk if we put bitumen in a pipeline." "When Alberta and Federal fossil fuel supporters attempt to characterize British Columbia as a province or British Colombians and First Nations, as objectors to pipelines, they frame that objection as these people, these first nations, these environmentalists, this provincial government whatever, are trying to stop Alberta getting its resources to market." "That's a quite familiar framing; That is completely false. Nobody would ever object to carrying solid bitumen to market, that's not the issue. The issue isn't keeping bitumen from going overseas." "If you really want to get your product to market without getting British Colombians up in arms about destroying our ecosystems, threatening the 800 stream crossings between the Alberta border and the Burnaby Turnable terminal. If you want to ship that bitumen to buyers elsewhere in the world, you can put it on a train."

Residency is one of the most profound life-changing seasons in a physician's journey—a time of rapid growth, deep uncertainty, and one of the biggest decisions of all: what comes next. In this unique collaborative episode, host Dr. Dael Waxman is joined by Charles Lowry, Director of Graduate Medical Education Relations at PracticeLink and host of the Surviving and Thriving in Residency podcast. Rather than a traditional interview, Dr. Waxman and Charlie engage in a shared conversation about the critical inflection points they've witnessed in medical students and residents. They explore the hidden struggles beneath the confident exterior—the loneliness, the imposter syndrome, the career uncertainty—and the powerful role that connection, validation, and intentional support can play. Together, they uncover how coaching and career resources can help residents move from survival mode to intentional choice, and why finding your "people" is essential for a sustainable, fulfilling career in medicine. Key Topics Discussed: Charlie's journey from statewide campus director for medical students to his current role supporting residents nationwide. The vulnerability and openness residents show when given a safe, non-evaluative space to share their struggles. The hidden stressors of residency: loneliness, lack of family support, and the challenge of being an international medical graduate. How PracticeLink serves as a free, comprehensive career resource for residents, from CV reviews to scholarships. The role of coaching in addressing imposter syndrome, leadership challenges, and the transition from training to practice. Why career uncertainty is a major driver of stress and well-being issues. Practical advice for residents: take advantage of free resources, find your community, and remember that residency is just one chapter. Big bather load on the calendar and worried about cloudy water, itchy eyes, or a long recovery the next day? We brought in legendary chemist and educator Bob Lowry to map out a clean, simple plan that keeps your water clear and your sanity intact. We start with the pre-party checklist: raise free chlorine a few ppm, add a measured dose of non-chlorine oxidizer, and keep the pump and filter running. Then comes the sleeper tactic that saves the most money and headache—pre-swim rinsing. Bob explains why sunscreen, deodorant, and lotions burn through sanitizer in the first minutes and how a quick rinse slashes chloramines, improves smell, and protects comfort. The conversation then zooms into chemistry that often gets overlooked: cyanuric acid's hidden impact on water balance. If trichlor is your workhorse, CYA climbs steadily, and your required free chlorine must climb with it—about 7.5 percent of CYA when you're not using borates. Bob breaks down adjusted alkalinity (carbonate alkalinity), why you subtract about one-third of CYA from total alkalinity, and how a pool can be corrosive even when TA looks “perfect.” If CYA is sky-high, partial drain and refill beats chasing pH and TA forever. Finally, we tackle a scary test result—pH near 5—and show the controlled fix: use soda ash to nudge pH, baking soda to build alkalinity, and aeration to finish the pH rise without clouding the pool or overshooting. • Raising free chlorine and using non-chlorine oxidizer before guests arrive• Keeping the pump and filter running during and after a party• Why pre-swim rinsing slashes chloramine formation and chemical costs• How trichlor drives cyanuric acid growth and chlorine demand• Using 7.5% of CYA as the free chlorine target without borates• Adjusted (carbonate) alkalinity and its impact on the saturation index• Corrosion risks when CYA is high and TA looks “normal”• Draining to reset CYA to a manageable range• Lifting very low pH with soda ash, then building TA with baking soda• Finishing pH rise with aeration tSend a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! Think evaporation lowers cyanuric acid? Think again. We open the cover on persistent pool myths with help from the late Bob Lowry's clear, data-driven explanations, and show how small assumptions can create big chemistry problems over a season.First, we break down why CYA never leaves with evaporation—only pure water does. That means every trichlor tablet quietly stacks CYA week after week, often hitting 100 to 150 ppm in a single swimming season. We compare sanitizer byproducts in plain terms: trichlor and dichlor raise CYA, liquid chlorine nudges TDS via salt, and cal hypo increases calcium. You'll hear practical numbers you can use on route, like how a gallon of liquid chlorine typically adds around 20 to 30 ppm salt depending on pool size, and how 65 percent cal hypo can add about 7 ppm calcium for every 10 ppm of free chlorine delivered. Then we shift to acids. Muriatic acid remains the straightforward choice for lowering pH and alkalinity without adding sulfate. Dry acid, while convenient, introduces sulfate that can accumulate and lead to calcium sulfate scale—harder to remove than calcium carbonate and invisible to the LSI you rely on. We also cover why dry acid needs airtight storage due to deliquescence, how to approach dosing when total alkalinity runs high, and why older warnings about dry acid and salt systems don't reflect current understanding, even if they persist in some manuals.By the end, you'll know how to choose the chlorine and acid strategy that fits your climate, hardness, and maintenance plan. • evaporation removes only pure water, not CYA• trichlor adds 6 ppm CYA per 10 ppm chlorine• CYA rises 25 ppm per month at common usage• water loss from draining or splash removes CYA• liquid chlorine adds modest salt and TDS• all chlorine types end as part of TDS• cal hypo adds about 7 ppm calcium per 10 ppm FC• dry acid introduces sulfate and hidden scale risk• calcium sulfate scale does not show on LSI• dry acid is deliquescent and needs tight storage• high alkalinity often nSend a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! A black stain appears the moment cal hypo hits the floor—panic sets in. We unpack why that stain isn't a new disaster but copper changing form, and how to turn a scary moment into a clean, controlled fix. With guidance from Bob Lowry, we break down the chemistry that matters, the tools that actually remove metals, and the habits that keep stains from returning. We start with the copper story: how copper sulfate hides in plain sight until oxidation turns it into black copper oxide, and why ascorbic acid can lift the look without solving the load. Then we get practical. We compare sequestrants and chelants, explain why they degrade under chlorine, UV, ozone, and AOP, and outline two reliable removal paths: CuLator capture over days or a pre-filter loop that strips metals in hours. We also cover partial drain and refill strategies and the simplest operational safeguard—dissolving and distributing cal hypo instead of letting granules settle on the floor. From there, we shift to living threats. Algae divisions add up fast, and by the time you can see it, a biofilm likely shields it from chlorine. We share a straightforward plan: brush to break the polysaccharide layer, raise sanitizer deliberately, and avoid the costly mistake of “waiting a week.” Finally, we tackle the health side that too many ignore: zero chlorine means no barrier against bather-to-bather disease transmission. People bring millions of bacteria into the water; residual sanitizer is the only real-time shield. If you do end up in water with no sanitizer, take a warm shower right away to reopen pores and rinse contaminants before they cause trouble.• honoring Bob Lowry's contributions to pool chemistry• why cal hypo can turn hidden copper blue-green to black copper oxide• pros and cons of ascorbic acid on stains• how sequestrants work and why they degrade• practical metal removal with CuLator and pre-filters• safer cal hypo application and dosing tips• algae growth math and biofilm protection• brushing strategy to break polysaccharides• risks of zero cSend a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! The best pool chemistry advice is the kind you can use on your next route. We sit down with Terry Arco to share how Bob Lowry's teachings are being refined into fast, field-ready training for residential service pros, plus a major update to the IPSA manuals that shaped a generation of technicians. If you've ever held chlorine at 3 ppm and still fought algae, or watched CYA granules sit on the floor in cold water, this walkthrough connects the dots between LSI, stabilizer, and free chlorine in a way that saves time and reduces callbacks.Terry explains how a six-hour class became a tight, high-impact course based on Lowry's 26-page Pool Chemistry for Service Pros. We unpack the three recurring challenges on most routes—water balance swings, misunderstood CYA behavior, and persistent algae despite “right” chlorine levels—and show how to solve them with clear targets and better testing. Expect actionable tips on managing LSI to avoid scale and corrosion, setting free chlorine relative to CYA and sunlight, and using aeration demos to see pH dynamics in real time.We also highlight HASA's stewardship of Bob's work, including updated IPSA training manuals and a Spanish edition in progress, while honoring the way Bob bridged lab smarts with backyard realities. From liquid pool conditioner to phone calls returned, his legacy is practical chemistry that respects the craft and the clock. The 2026 schedule brings these condensed courses to major shows and regional events nationwide, so you can level up without losing a day on the route.• Abridged course drawn from Pool Chemistry for Service Pros• Focus on LSI for scale and corrosion control• Practical CYA management tied to sunlight and chlorine strength• Rethinking fixed free chlorine targets to prevent algae• Demonstrations on aeration and pH behavior• HASA stewardship of Bob Lowry copyrights• IPSA manuals updated and Spanish versions in development• 2026 training at Western, Southwest, Florida, Arizona, and Fresno eventsSend us a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! In 2026, everything is different. AI is scaling both research and publishing productivity. Impact factors no longer matter. Big name journal publishers launch offspring journals with little credentials other than the brand. How should we make sense of all this to figure out which journals are really important to our field? It is time for a new, rigorous ranking of IS journals. Problem is, we cannot really agree on our ranks and our reasons. You need to help us: give us your top ten ranking of IS journals with your reasoning. Together, we can find out what is best for our field going forward. References Seidel, S., Berente, N., Guo, H., Oh, W. Despite a heartbreaking Bears loss to end their season in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, Andy joins Brendan for what is still a Victory Monday episode of The Shotgun Start. Andy can't believe that Vijay Singh made the cut at the Sony Open and immediately takes a victory lap about hitting the Over-Under of 0.5 Vijay made cuts for the season. There is a brief Football Minute at the start of this episode commemorating a historic Bears season, but the conversation soon shifts to the PGA Tour's Opening Drive, which is now closed after just one event. Chris Gotterup won the Sony Open for his third win in as many seasons and perhaps further exemplifying why he was a Ryder Cup snub at Bethpage. Andy and Brendan discuss Gotterup's advantage off-the-tee that set him up for success at Waialae Country Club and his continued ascendence into the upper tier of pro golfers. The two then unpack other storylines from the first PGA Tour event of the year, such as a top 25 from Jordan Spieth, a made cut from Vijay, a Sunday stumble by 54-hole leader Davis Riley, and a Collin Morikawa missed cut. Andy also brings up Big Shot Bob MacIntyre's comments about his attitude costing him a win at the Sony and wonders if Bob gets a bit too much leeway from fans based on his on-course actions. Nacho Elvira took home the win in Dubai on the DP World Tour after a Shane Lowry collapse on the 72nd hole. Andy and Brendan are thrilled about a win for Nacho and give some props to Lowry for speaking to the media after a tough finish. After touching on the Latin America Am, Brendan shares some of Michael Block's latest comments... about Tiger Woods. Andy cannot believe that Blockie has a platform to throw out a gauntlet to Tiger Woods on the Champions Tour, and Brendan also can't believe Greg Norman is still being platformed to discuss his "loyalty to the PGA Tour." Speaking of loyalty to the PGA Tour, Patrick Reed has said that he'd be open to a return if he was offered the same deal as Brooks Koepka. This episode wraps up with another Football Minute as we put a bow on the Bears and look ahead to a loaded week of pro golf with the 2026 season now underway.

Just before midnight on December 6, 1991, an Austin, TX patrol officer called in a fire at a yogurt shop and requested firefighters and additional officers. Once they managed to get the fire under control, firefighters discovered the bodies of four teenage girls in the burned out remains of the building, all having been shot execution style and the building torched to cover up the crime.Almost immediately, investigators on the case ran into a dead end, as leads were scarce and the fire and efforts to extinguish it destroyed or compromised critical evidence. In short time, the case went cold and the residents of Austin moved on. To their surprise, nearly ten years later, Austin detectives announced they'd arrested for young men for the crime, two of whom confessed, and it seemed like, after a long delay, justice would finally be served; however, in this case, justice was still a long way off and when it finally arrived, it came tainted by police misconduct.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1992.
