She was wiling to share her insights of the craft. We delve into the rehearsal process, approaching rewrites and the importance of dramatic truth, finding opportunities and landing an agent, changes to pieces from a thesis to premieres to publication. We also touch on the trick of raising stakes, the structure of a song in musical theatre, magical realism and laying breadcrumbs, achieving foreshadowing, playwriting vs musical theatre, and how analytics can rename a play. We wrap it up discussing the struggles with the business of playwriting as well as with the craft itself, the differences between structure vs form, approaching character and the math in human emotion, and, finally, creative license. The Guelph Fringe Festival unfolds this weekend with 10 companies performing in three different venues over four days in downtown Guelph with 100 per cent of the ticket prices going back to the artists. These shows are experimental, personal, and unlike anything you will ever see anywhere else, and this week's show is going to highlight three interviews from three different shows to tell you why Guelph Fringe is a can't miss event for theatre fans and the theatre curious. First, we will talk to Bridget Cann from Staccayto Staccato, the Toronto-based musical comedy troupe who staged last year's Guelph Fringe "Big Buzz Award" winner, Make Up! The Musical. It's a musical comedy show that's completely made up! Using suggestions from the audience, they come up with a whole one hour musical with improvised characters, plots, places, and, of course, music. Then, we will talk to Christel Bartelse, a Toronto-based actor/storyteller, comedian, and director and educator. Her show is A Woman of My Age, which Bartelse both wrote and performs, is her seventh solo production after ONEymoon, Chaotica and All KIDding Aside which have toured to fringe festivals all across Canada, and the U.S. and also to Edinburgh, the largest fringe festival in the world. And finally we will talk to Julie Lyn Barber and Michelle Dvoskin. Turbulent Architect, written and performed by Barber and directed and dramaturged by Dvoskin, offers a candid, heartwarming, and hilarious guided tour of the chaotic inner workings of Barber's mind. Barber is an actor, singer, director, choreographer, musical director, and the Head of Musical Theatre at Purdue University Fort Wayne while Dvoskin is a director, intimacy choreographer, performer, playwright and an associate professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance at Western Kentucky University. On this week's episode the four of them will talk about their shows, their inspirations, and the challenges in staging their production. We will also talk about their backgrounds, what makes a show “fringe”, and what they hope the audience will leave with when the show is over. So let's talk about some of this year's shows at the Guelph Fringe Festival on this week's Guelph Politicast! The Guelph Fringe Festival runs from Thursday August 7 to Sunday August 10. You can see the full schedule and buy tickets at their website. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple, TuneIn and Spotify . Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday. Programming Note: Guelph Politicast will be running previously enjoyed episodes on Wednesday August 13 and 20. We will back with new episodes on Wednesday August 27.
Watching my college's reunion cabaret this year, I was struck by how old fashioned and bourgeois so much of the musical theatre repertoire being presented was. The songs that folks had brought to perform were things like “Stars and The Moon” by Jason Robert Brown and selections from Grey Gardens. The material was similarly conventional when I was a student. At the time it seemed normal to sing songs about middle class marriage and imbalanced heterosexual relationships, even within the hotbed of an alternative progressive culture. It seems odd to me now. Why did our songs and our theatre not reflect the world that was happening on our college lawn or in our classrooms? How does an idea become a musical? How do you write both a play and a musical soundtrack at the same time? How does a musical that you've finally written wind up on a real stage with real actors?Kaylee Killingsworth and Kenady Sean have answers. In this episode, Emmeline sits down with two-thirds of the creative team behind Beyond Perfection, a new musical about our human desire for perfection and our love-hate relationship with reality. Just days before their New York City debut, Kenady and Kaylee get candid about the winding path to the stage, from initial table reads to a complete script revision. They also discuss the value of perseverance, the fine line between constructive criticism and debilitating criticism, and how this version of Beyond Perfection is, without a doubt, their best one yet. Send us a textWhilst Brigadoon continued rehearsals, Cavan Clarke sat down with us to discuss the eagerly anticipated revival of Lerner & Leowe's beloved musical. The production also marks an exciting return for Cavan to Regent's Park Open Air Theatre following his acclaimed performance as Mercutio in Kimberley Syke's production of Romeo & Juliet in 2021. Brigadoon has often been described as one of the greatest musicals to come out of the Golden Age of Musicals, and has been much missed in London after experiencing a 20 year absence from the UK stage. In Drew McOnie's production, Cavan Clarke plays Jeff Douglas, a pleasure seeker and companion to Tommy Albright who arrive at the Scottish Highlands in the middle of World War II. The show's been adapted by Rona Munro and we hear Cavan talk about her updates to this classic show and what audiences can perhaps expect from this new productionIn our interview, Cavan Clarke talks to us about making his professional musical theatre debut having long been a fan of musicals himself. During our conversation, we looked back on some of his career highlights including playing Mercutio at Regent's Park, and his work on the landmark production of Small Island at the National Theatre. We hear him talk about the challenges of being a jobbing actor too and the sacrifices one sometimes has to make in order to make ends meet. We also talk to Cavan about his relationship with rising star Jack Wolfe, and how he hopes to work together on a project in the future. It seems like an exciting time for Cavan Clarke and we hope this won't be the last time he features in a musical too.Brigadoon runs at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre from 2 August - 20 September 2025 with tickets available now.Support the show

Send us a textWelcome to Episode 227! The Boys were recently listening to a discussion amongst friends -- what would you do? Inevitably it evolved into the age old question, what would you do for a Klondike bar? Turns out not a lot, but for $600 cash?? Now that's where things start to get interesting. This week Casey & Mark are discussing what they would each do for $600 in cold hard cash. The thoughts and actions proposed may shock you and almost certainly could make you laugh out loud at the thought. Scenarios and hilarity abound in this week's Midsection. Afterward ask yourself and your friends -- what would you do for $600 and let Painted Trash know the ideas and actions for real!Kicking things off, The Boys are back after a week off for a surgery. Now recovering, there some interesting tea from the events of surgery day and the healing. It's also been a period of mourning as one of the beloved fur babies takes it to the tub.Trash Talk topics this week include updates on some of the infamous Painted Trash personalities who have been painted by Casey & Mark; a letter of complaint from serveral Congresspeople; and, a church in Indiana takes hate speech to a whole new level. It's a light-hearted, hilarious episode this week for you with just a slight dose of discourse and a whole lot of f*ggotry! So fill your glass with a tasty summer port vintage, put on a fresh diaper, and pull up a seat to the table with your GBFFs/ It's time to paint!=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-Let The Boys of Painted Trash know your thoughts on this week's topics and episode! Well, it's been an eventful week for at least one of your GBFFs and its sparked some feelings and, of course, plenty of thoughts and reactions. That's right, y'all.
