Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner are the three sisters that make up the band, Joseph. Originally hailing from Oregon, the Joseph girls have had an incredible year touring the United States and Europe. In just the last few months they’ve performed on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, CONAN, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, and Ellen. Allison, Meegan, and Natalie are full of life, strength, courage, and hope and all of that rings so true in their music. -- @thebandjoseph on Instagram, Twitter & Facebook | thebandjoseph.com @brandenharvey on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook & Snapchat | brandenharvey.com Join the Sounds Good with Branden Harvey Email Party at brandenharvey.com/podcast

Natalie Closner was a young musician trying to make it as a solo act, performing in bars and restaurants (whoever would take her) across the country, when a friend called her out for trying to sell music she herself didn't believe in. She almost immediately thought of her two twin sisters back home in Oregon, Meegan and Allie, whom she knew could sing, mostly from their occasional serenading of Rascal Flatts around the kitchen. Hey people! It’s summer! Time to hit some shows. And to help you get your calendar arranged, this week we're cranking up the volume on some of the best bands we met in studio sessions this year who happen to have shows in the area, plus a super fancy, exclusive concert premiere. You can find videos of all these performances at www.opb.org/stateofwonder.Iconic Supergroup case/lang/veirs Teams UpNeko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs finished three years of work on a lush, soulful new record and played their entire album, “case/lang/veirs,” in an exclusive opbmusic session. If you do nothing else today, go enjoy the video. You can also catch the trio live at the Oregon Zoo in Portland on July 2 and at the Les Schwab Ampitheater in Bend on July 5.M. Ward Sings to His Baby (and opbmusic)
The latest release from M. Ward, "More Rain," might sound like a Portland soundtrack, but it belies its name with sunny sounds of doo-wop and golden era AM radio sensibilities. The artist came by the OPB studios to play a few songs with a power backing band (REM’s Scott McCoy, Mike Coykendall, and Alialujah Choir’s Adam Selzer and Alia Farah), who he insists he did not find on Craigslist. Watch the videos, and see Ward at Revolution Hall on July 16 and 17.Joseph Heats Up On Late NightIt’s shaping up to be a great summer for the band Joseph, as the sister trio (Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner) blew it up this week on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," performing their new single "White Flag." We had the pleasure of talking with the sisters in a cozy acoustic session last year. The trio grew up on a small farm in Estacada. Currently, they are on tour for their new album, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not.” They'll be at Pickathon in Happy Valley, Oregon, August 5-7 and will circle back to Eugene in September. The Soul-Hop of Dirty RevivalDirty Revival brought their seven piece band down to the OPB studios to play some funky, energetic tracks off their 2015 self-titled album. The group sat down with host April Baer to talk touring, song reworks, and the social consciousness that permeates their music. You can watch videos of their performance here, and catch them live at the Doug Fir on June 25, Bend's Deschutes Brewery on June 27, and Portland's Columbia Park Annex for a Summer Free For All show on July 12.Blind Pilot Sails Back into Harbor with a New AlbumBlind Pilot’s 2008 debut album, “3 Rounds and a Sound,” made national headlines after they took the album on tour, by bike, riding down the west coast with their instruments in tow. We caught up with the band’s founders Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski last summer in Astoria for a special performance with classical cello star Sergey Antonov. Their new album, “And Then Like Lions,” is set to be released on Aug. 12. Catch the band live at the Liberty Theatre in Astoria on August 19 or see them in Portland and Eugene in October.1939 Ensemble Soar With Instrumental Power
Jose Medeles and David Coniglio built the sonic equivalent of a sweet ‘67 Camaro when they got together to play drums and vibraphones. The two artists came in for an opbmusic session to talk about where they’re headed. See them live at the PDX Pop Now Festival, alongside a roster of stellar local acts, July 22-24.

Shows, records, openings, performances, books, festivals — we've enjoyed an unusual amount of beauty in 2015. So we thought we’d take a look back at some of our favorite moments. The Hollywood Theatre Redefines the Modern Movie PalaceYou haven’t seen “2001: A Space Odyssey” unless you've seen it the way it was supposed to be seen: on ultrawide, deliciously detailed 70-millimeter celluloid. Local Kubrick buffs were lucky enough to enjoy that experience in March thanks to the Hollywood Theatre, which revived the storied 70 mm format after a cinematic treasure hunt. Now, the theater is one of only 100 on the continent to screen the 70mm extended edition of Quentin Tarantino’s newest, “The Hateful Eight.” The Hollywood is on its way to becoming one of the most dynamic movie houses in the country, and the guys who run the venue gave us a sneak preview of what's planned for 2016, including its unlikely expansion to the C Concourse at the Portland Airport. (Movies while we wait for our flights? Count us in!)The Ethereal Harmonies of Joseph - 10:09We’ve had the pleasure of having many amazing musicians into the OPB studio this year. It’s nearly impossible to pick favorites, but we just can’t get the sound of the band Joseph out of our head. The band is three sisters, Allison, Meegan and Natalie Closner, who grew up on a small farm in Estacada. Unlike many musical siblings, they didn’t grow up harmonizing, but they've made up for lost time. Watch their performance in the OPB studio, and then catch them live in February in Bend, Eugene and Portland. A Debut Novel From a Former Portland Poster Girl - 17:35Renaissance woman Miranda July has won filmmaking awards at Cannes and Sundance, captured a prestigious Frank O’Connor award for her short stories, been included in Whitney Biennials for her multimedia and performance art, and even designed an app. But she had never published a novel until this year, when she released “The First Bad Man." Turns out, the book’s awkward protagonist fit in quite nicely with July’s other creations. "Shy" R&B Crooner Flirts with the Big Time - 23:12So here's the confusing state of music monikers in Oregon: Joseph is three women, and the R&B outfit Shy Girls is one guy, Dan Vidmar. But like the sisters, he's doing it for himself. Early this year, Vidmar dropped his much-anticipated first full-length release, a mixtape dubbed “4WZ." And he's splitting his days between Portland and the big-time scene in Los Angeles, which is where we found him. You can here the full interview here. and find "4WZ" and many of his other tracks on his Soundcloud page. Shakespeare Gets the Beat with The Go-Go's - 31:15Playwright Jeff Whitty is best known for writing the book for “Avenue Q,” the Tony-winning adult puppet musical that featured songs like “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” and “The Internet is for Porn.” Whitty grew up in Coos Bay, and he returned to the state this year to premiere a new musical at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival called “Head Over Heels.” It mashes up an Elizabethan epic, “The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia,” with, of all things, the music of the ‘80s all-girl rock band The Go-Go’s. And, spoiler alert: The Go-Go's loved it. Remembering Allen Touissant - 40:53On November 10, we lost one of the architects of the Crescent City sound. Allen Toussaint produced hundreds of records — including Dr. John’s “Right Place Wrong Time,” Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” and many influential records with his studio’s house band, The Meters — and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Allen Toussaint spoke to us in June from his home studio in New Orleans, leading us through a life of legendary music, before appearing at the Waterfront Blues Festival for what would be his final performance in Portland.

This is it, folks: we’re in the peak heat of the summer music season. PDX Pop Now is this weekend. Pickathon plucks through Happy Valley next weekend. Then there’s MusicFestNW, the Britt Festival, Sisters Folk Festival. It’s a never-ending cavalcade of lawn chairs and beer gardens and singers backlit by spectacular sunsets.Which is why we’re going to spend the hour hearing from some of the bands who’re currently ruling our playlists and also happen to be touring through this summer. 1:21 - Last week, we traveled to Joseph to record a show from the writers’ festival, Summer Fishtrap. In preparation, we started looking at some of the amazing artists linked to the area, and one in particular stood out. The band Joseph is made up of three sisters: Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner. Unlike many musical siblings, they didn’t grow up singing together, but you can't tell from their pristine harmonies. 10:40 - The band Calexico is named after the border town of Calexico, California, and their music is all about crossing borders, mixing Americana, indie rock, Tex-Mex, jazz, and Latin rhythms. This month, opbmusic caught up with them before a performance at McMenamins Edgefield. 17:46 - Edna Vasquez first made her name in the male world of mariachi music, but now her fingers strum through bands and genres as easily as they do chords. There’s a solo project, a four-piece called No Passengers, and frequent collaborations (watch her opbmusic session). 24:28 - Oregon Art Beat produced this story about Luz Elena Mendoza. She's best known for her band Y La Bamba, which caught the national ear with its infectious blend of mexican folk and indie rock, and her newest project, Tiburones, was voted one of the city’s best new bands in Willamette Week last year and has an album slated for November. And rejoice, all ye Y La Bamba lovers: two and a half years after disbanding the group, Mendoza is picking the mantle back up with a new lineup. She is currently crowdfunding to record a new Y La Bamba album. 32:35 - Lost Lander broke onto the Portland scene in 2012 with the album “DRRT.” It was one of those dreamy local collaborations — singer-songwriter Matt Sheehy and producer Brent Knopf, the acoustic and the electronic. As Lost Lander toured, it evolved into a four piece. 37:18 - Historically, The Helio Sequence has disappeared into its studio for months — if not a year — to fine tune its albums, which is why the duo only has five albums under its belt after nearly 18 years playing together. But the band changed the rules of the game for its eponymous sixth album. Forget polishing in secret; they decided to take on a little challenge called the 20-song game and then let their friends vote on the tracklist. They told us about letting go during an opbmusic session. 41:18 - We close the show with a goodbye to someone who breathed joy into Portland’s music scene. Dave Camp was a renaissance artist, Portland style. He played and sang with a slew of bands. He was a central figure in the colorful, art rock project the Nowhere Band, which performed the Beatles White Album every Christmas. He had his own band, a psychedelic, disco glam extravaganza, Stereovision, and was in the middle of writing a graphic novel trilogy with the same name. And by day, he composed music for commercials and documentaries like “Andy Warhol’s Factory People” and “The Wanted.” Camp had one of those prolific Facebook feeds that reads like the intimate musings of a modern mystic. It was there where he described his months-long struggle with stomach cancer in posts of extreme candour and grace – posts that rallied a community around him and continue to deeply affect friends and strangers both. For concert dates and videos of most of these performances, see our show page: http://www.opb.org/radio/programs/stateofwonder/segment/state-of-wonder-july-25-2015-summer-music-special
