Tears for Fears is a duo formed in 1981 in Bath, England by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. They've sold over 30 million albums, starting with their first, The Hurting, which went to number one in the UK. But it was their second album, Songs from the Big Chair, that made them international stars. It came out in 1985, and had huge singles like “Shout” and "Head Over Heels.” But their biggest hit is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It won Best Single at the BRIT Awards in 1986, and it's been streamed over 2 billion times. So I talked to the two of them about how they, along with their producer Chris Hughes and keyboard player Ian Stanley, made a song that would help define the sound of the 80s.For more, visit songexploder.net/tears-for-fears.

Am 25. Februar 1985 haben Tears for Fears ihr zweites Album "Songs From The Big Chair" veröffentlicht, auf dem mit "Shout" oder "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" große Hits sind. Schon mit ihrem Debütalbum "The Hurting" haben Tears for Fears Anfang der 80er-Jahre die Charts erobert und es in ihrer britischen Heimat bis auf Platz 1 geschafft. Mit "Songs From The Big Chair" haben es Roland Orzabal und Curt Smith dann auch bei uns in Deutschland an die Spitze der Charts geschafft. Mit "Shout", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" und "Head Over Heels" sind auch einige ihrer größten Hits auf dem Album "Songs From The Big Chair". Anyone who knows The Go-Go's knows they got the beat. But in the recent television documentary about them, fans also learn the true story of how they got it, lost it, and found it again. The film shows where The Go-Gos are today: making new music together for the first time in 20 something years. We catch up with drummer, Gina Schock and listen, mesmerized as she tells her incredible story. Gina Schock, born Regina Ann Schock in Baltimore, Maryland, is celebrated as the powerhouse drummer of The Go-Go's, one of the most influential all-female rock bands in history. Raised in a working-class neighbourhood, Gina discovered her passion for drumming as a teenager, teaching herself the craft and dreaming of a life in music. Her ambition led her to move to Los Angeles in the late 1970s, where she joined The Go-Go's in 1979, just as the band began making waves in the punk scene. The Go-Go's were pioneers, becoming the first all-women band to achieve mainstream success while writing their own music and playing their own instruments. Gina's hard-hitting, high-energy drumming became a key element of the band's signature sound, driving hits like We Got the Beat, Vacation, and Our Lips Are Sealed. The band's debut album, Beauty and the Beat (1981), topped the Billboard 200 for six weeks, establishing The Go-Go's as trailblazers in both pop and rock music. Despite their success, the band faced challenges, including grueling tours and internal tensions, leading to their initial breakup in 1985. During this time, Gina underwent heart surgery for a congenital defect, a personal challenge that underscored her resilience. Post-Go-Go's, she pursued songwriting and producing, contributing to projects for stars like Miley Cyrus (Breakout) and Selena Gomez. She also ventured into acting and photography, showcasing her multifaceted creativity. The Go-Go's reunited several times over the years, maintaining their legacy through tours, new music, and a Broadway musical, Head Over Heels, which featured their songs. Their enduring influence was cemented when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, a milestone highlighting their groundbreaking achievements. Beyond music, Gina is also known for her vivacious personality, humour, and advocacy for women in the arts. She remains an inspiring figure, balancing her love for music with personal passions like photography and sharing her life story to empower future generations of musicians. Gina Schock joins us this week to provide an insight into her amazing world. If you'd like to know what songs she wrote, how she got her start, what life has been like for her over the years ... then you've come to the right place. I'm certain you'll enjoy hearing Gina Schock tell her story.

Does everyone on your team feel empowered to contribute and share? That is the secret sauce that this guest has learned over the course of his time in the industry. Today's featured guest will share common branding mistakes as well as how to brand with longevity in mind. His approach challenges common misconceptions about branding, revealing why many businesses falter from the start in their brand-building efforts. To him, the journey to building a successful brand hinges on the ability to validate ideas, fostering a culture of experimentation, and embracing the lessons learned from both successes and failures to navigate the complexities of the market with greater agility. Tune in for an enlightening conversation on the art of branding and fostering a collaborative culture. David Frederick is the co-founder of Head Over Heels, an agency dedicated to helping brands and consumers build lasting relationships. He shares insights on the common misconceptions surrounding branding and emphasizes the importance of storytelling in creating authentic connections. Plus, he discusses the things people commonly get wrong about branding and consequently fail to convey a brand's essence and highlights the need for original, thoughtful branding strategies. In this interview, we'll discuss: Common branding mistakes. The key to brand longevity. Cultivating a collaborative culture as the key to creative success. What People Get Wrong About Branding Effective branding goes beyond surface-level aesthetics - it's about crafting a compelling narrative that resonates with consumers. However, David has observed that many brands, particularly on short-form media, often miss the mark when it comes to truly understanding and communicating their brand story. The lack of a deep, nuanced grasp of branding can lead to content that fails to bring the brand to life. This is a critical misstep, as storytelling should be a central pillar in forging meaningful connections with the target audience. This storytelling approach fosters a two-way conversation, allowing consumers to feel involved in the narrative. Ultimately, consumers are increasingly drawn to brands that authentically align with their values and experiences and creating these experiences will take a deep understanding of the brand's core identity and a team that cultivates originality and embraces new ideas. Cultivating Originality as the Key to Brand Longevity Brands that fail to embrace originality risk becoming indistinguishable from their competitors, reducing their ability to attract and retain loyal customers. To cultivate originality, they must invest time in understanding their core identity. Branding has become formulaic when it should be about who you want to talk to specifically and how you want to address them. Instead, most brands want to follow trends like being on TikTok because it's the popular thing to do, when their consumer might not even be reached on that platform. Understanding the core identity of a brand involves thorough exploration of its DNA, including its mission, vision, and values. It requires asking the right questions: What do you stand for? Who is your target audience? How can you communicate your message in a way that resonates with that audience? The answers will help brands carve out a unique space in the market that reflects their true essence. Cultivating brand originality is an ongoing process that requires a willingness to adapt. Ultimately, it all comes down to the product - no matter how compelling the brand story, a formulaic offering will struggle to gain traction. Once the brand's core identity and value proposition are defined, the focus should shift to aligning growth strategies with the brand's challenges and aspirations. Identify your challenges and aspirations to form a clear vision of what you want for your business beyond “we want to grow”. For example, if a brand is already recognized within its niche but seeks to reach a broader audience, it should define what that growth looks like. Is it about increasing awareness, generating leads, or enhancing customer engagement? By clarifying these goals, brands can create a roadmap for their branding strategy. The Art of Collaboration as the Secret to Creative Success The ability to generate and execute innovative ideas is paramount in this industry, and to David something very much linked to team work. He recounts the time he worked on a commercial featuring Sarah Jessica Parker developing  the concept of a fragrance bottle. Initially, someone proposed the idea of the fragrance bottle going missing, leading to a series of creative developments that would capture the public's imagination. The campaign was tremendously successful and exemplifies how a single idea can serve as a foundation for a larger narrative, but it is teamwork that enables this idea to flourish. The team included members from various departments—media, public relations, and brand management—all of whom brought unique perspectives to the table. They had just one rule: no bad ideas, no buts. This diversity of thought allowed them to expand on the initial idea in ways that a single individual might not have envisioned. By contrast, the creation of the Netflix model was about taking a bad idea and disproving it quickly, which helped them avoid the pitfalls of falling in love with a flawed idea. Initially, the co-founders thought of renting VHS tapes through the mail. However, it seemed impractical due to the challenges of shipping bulky tapes. By the time DVDs came out, they decided to test the idea and were able to validate the concept within a day, allowing them to move forward with confidence. This rapid validation process prevented them from investing unnecessary time in a non-viable idea and set the stage for their eventual success. In both cases, fostering a culture of experimentation helped these brands prioritize rapid validation and remain true to their core identity, which was the difference to not only stand out but also forge meaningful connections with consumers, ultimately driving engagement and loyalty. Watch the Trailer for Head Over Heels Our Thoughts on Head Over Heels If you're new here, this space serves as a companion to our Hallmark Review podcast, where we dive deep into Hallmark's latest releases. Today, we're bringing you a comprehensive review of "Head Over Heels," which premiered on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, August 31, 2024. As always, we invite you to join us on Instagram and our Facebook group, Girls Gone Hallmark, to share your thoughts and engage with fellow Hallmark fans. What We Liked While "Head Over Heels" had many ups and downs, there were some standout elements that caught our attention: Alexandra Castillo as Delaney Diaz: For many of us, Alexandra Castillo was the star of the show. Playing the demanding boss, Delaney Diaz, she brought a level of sophistication and talent that elevated the film. Her portrayal of a Miranda Priestly-esque character from "The Devil Wears Prada" was both cliche and refreshing.

The Hanged Man is arguably the most enigmatic card in the traditional tarot deck. Divested of any archetypal apparel – he is neither emperor nor fool, but just a man, who happens to be hanging – he gazes back at us with the look of one who harbors a secret. But what sort of secret? In this episode, JF and Phil discuss the card that no less august a personage than A.E. Waite, co-creator of the classic Rider-Waite deck, claimed was beyond all understanding. The musical interludes in this episode are from Pierre-Yves Martel's recent album, "Bach."
