We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2022 conversation with Roland Orzabal. ABOUT ROLAND ORZABAL AND TEARS FOR FEARS:Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith formed Tears for Fears in Bath, England, in 1981 and have gone on to sell 30 million albums worldwide. Their major breakthrough in the UK came in 1982 with the Top 5 single “Mad World” and the subsequent platinum-selling album The Hurting. They gained major steam in the US with their sophomore album Songs From the Big Chair, which included the hit singles “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” and “Head Over Heels.” Featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Songs From the Big Chair reached #1 and was certified five times Platinum by the RIAA. Tears for Fears' follow-up single “Sowing the Seeds of Love” was another massive hit, but Curt departed the group not long after. Following a couple of albums with Orzabal at the helm, the duo reunited for the Everybody Loves a Happy Ending album in 2004. Now, after a long wait of 17 years, Roland and Curt have just released their seventh studio album The Tipping Point, and are embarking on a major tour. Even as they bring us new music, their legacy is well-established as one of the most unique and influential British groups to emerge in the last few decades. Their songs have been covered or sampled by Gary Jules, Adam Lambert, Lorde, Kanye West, Drake, and many others. And, in 2021, the band was honored with the Outstanding Song Collection honor at the Ivor Novello Awards in London.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Kate Flannery and Oscar Nuñez had a mini "Office" reunion on last night's season finale of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and went ALL THE WAY! (You'd know them as Meredith and Oscar on the show.) They even called up Brian Baumgartner (Kevin) for their "Phone-a-Friend" lifeline. As for the million-dollar question? "The word 'planet' comes from an ancient Greek word that literally means what?" Their options were "powerful," "immortal," "stranger," and "wanderer" . . . the answer being "wanderer". Kate and Oscar will be splitting their winnings between Planned Parenthood and a Philadelphia-based food bank called Philabundance. Fresh off Coachella comes Stagecoach! She'll appear on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on October 6, just three days after her album release and one day after fiancé Travis Kelce's birthday. Fallon teased the appearance in a cryptic roulette-themed post landing on Swift's lucky number, 13. This marks Taylor's seventh Tonight Show stop, alongside guests Keri Russell and a performance from The Format.Queen Eyeing Vegas Sphere ResidencyBrian May says Queen is seriously considering a Las Vegas Sphere residency after seeing the Eagles perform there. He told Rolling Stone, “The kind of show we could put on would be absolutely stupendous.” While May admits he's weary of traditional touring after 50 years, the Sphere could give the band a spectacular new stage without the grind of life on the road. Katie Couric pokes fun at Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad in a new PSA for colon cancer screenings. The clip opens to a close-up of Katie wearing a jean jacket, and quickly pans out to show she's wearing a hospital gown underneath, and she's on a gurney getting ready for a colonoscopy. She tells the camera, quote, "Speaking of genes. Did you know that the majority of people who develop colon cancer are not genetically predisposed to the disease? That's why doctors recommend everyone 45 and older get checked." Katie told "People" magazine, quote, "That ad showed how pop culture and a pair of jeans could really shape the cultural conversation, it was everywhere. It was a moment in time, and we thought, 'Why don't we ride that horse a little bit longer and have some fun with it?'" It'sbeen 25 years since Katie became the first person in history to broadcast a colonoscopy on national TV. She lost her husband to colon cancer in 1998. He was only 42. One of the most famous homes in American history is opening its doors to the public for the first time ever. The "Brady Bunch" house in North Hollywood will be accessible to fans on November 7th, 8th, and 9th. And while bookings are sold out, you can register to be on a waitlist, or be notified if additional dates become available. When the show was in production back in the day, the house was only used for EXTERIOR shots. The inside of the Brady home was created on a soundstage, and the inside of the actual house looked nothing like it. But HGTV bought the house in 2018, and renovated it so that it DOES match the house from the show. And of course, they recorded it for a series called "A Very Brady Renovation". Alyssa Milano, now 52, announced on Instagram that she underwent surgery to remove her breast implants—calling it a step toward reclaiming her body. She wrote that she's letting go of “false narratives” and a body she felt was “sexualized” and “abused.” Page Six+2People.com+2Milano said she once believed implants were essential to being attractive, loved, or successful—but now emphasizes that her worth doesn't depend on them. Sacha Baron Cohen, 53, has been spotted on a dinner date with 27-year-old OnlyFans creator Hannah Palmer, just months after finalizing his $75 million divorce from Isla Fisher. Page SixThe pair were seen leaving the restaurant separately before getting into the same Cadillac Escalade. Although the age gap raised eyebrows, insiders say they “seemed to be getting on really well.” Page Six+1Cohen and Fisher married in 2010, share three children, and announced their split in 2024 before finalizing the divorce this past June. Action legend Chuck Norris, now 85, marked his birthday by hiking Lassen Peak in Northern California—a strenuous trail rising to 10,457 feet. It's official: HBO Max wants to traumatize your children. What other reason could there be for them to produce a brand new, animated version of "Charlotte's Web", one of the greatest children's stories ever told . . . until it becomes the most heart-wrenchingly brutal story in the history of mankind? This one is a limited series, told in three parts, which will all be released on Thursday, October 2nd. It stars Amy Adams as Charlotte, Elijah Wood as Wilbur the pig, and Jean Smart as the narrator. The voice cast also includes Cynthia Erivo, Randall Park, and Rosario Dawson. Originally posted December 2021In this episode of Broadway Drumming 101, I sit down with Dena Tauriello, the drummer for Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre. From her first sparkle kit inspired by Karen Carpenter to a career that's taken her from rock arenas to Broadway pits, Dena shares a powerful story about perseverance, adaptability, and passion.Dena spent nearly two decades with the all-female rock band Antigone Rising, logging more than 260 shows a year, signing with Lava/Atlantic Records, and sharing bills with bands like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and The Bangles. Along the way, she learned the grind of life on the road, the frustration of being pigeonholed as “girl music,” and the discipline that comes from playing night after night. Those experiences became the foundation for her eventual move to Broadway. Her first Broadway chair came in Head Over Heels, the Go-Go's jukebox musical that featured an all-female band. From there, Dena's career expanded into multiple productions, including Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls, The Cher Show (as a sub), Magic Mike the Musical (Broadway Lab), and her current run in Little Shop of Horrors. She also subs on Hamilton, Six, and at the origial run of Beetlejuice. In our conversation, Dena opens up about the realities of the pit:* Why no two shows are ever the same and why you can never “phone it in”* The discipline it takes to stay fully present eight times a week* How playing in Antigone Rising prepared her for the demands of Broadway* What she looks for when hiring subs and why paying it forward matters* The role of Ableton, click tracks, and sound cues in modern Broadway drumming* Her full gear setup: Pearl drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, Promark sticks, and custom in-ears* Why she always keeps charts in front of her—even after memorizing the showDena also talks about the surreal moment of playing on stage with the Go-Go's, interviewing Gina Schock for Modern Drummer, and what it feels like to see the Head Over Heels Playbill now preserved in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a conversation filled with honesty, humor, and hard-won lessons for any drummer dreaming of breaking into Broadway—or simply learning how to thrive in the unpredictable world of live performance. For more about Dena: https://www.denatauriello.comClayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The next episode of the Broadway Drumming 101 Podcast features a great conversation with Michael Manasseh, drummer and percussionist for the most recent North American tour of Hadestown.Michael's musical journey started at the age of five and has taken him through an impressive range of experiences. From big band and small combo work at The Rivers School in Weston, MA, to prestigious jazz programs like The NEC Jazz Lab, Berklee's Five-Week Jazz Workshop, and the Vail Jazz Workshop, he built a deep foundation in multiple styles. In college, he studied under Vince Cherico, Bruce Barth, David Gibson, and Don Sickler, and played in 11 theater productions, including In The Heights, Head Over Heels, and Pippin. He eventually graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Economics and Mathematics. What made this conversation stand out was Michael's curiosity about not just drumming, but the business side of Broadway. He talked about joining a co-producing team for Lumpica, helping to fundraise for the production, and learning firsthand how tight the margins are in theater. From the massive cost of putting up a show to the weekly expenses that can make or break a production, Michael brings a perspective that every theater musician should hear.If you want to understand how to make a lasting career in this business — not just play the music — my upcoming book Broadway Bound and Beyond: A Musician's Guide to Building a Theater Career dives deep into both the art and the industry.Subscribe to Broadway Drumming 101 so you don't miss Michael's episode and other conversations that go beyond the notes.Clayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical, and The Gospel at Colonus (featuring Kim Burrell). Bands Across America: Northern California Grateful Dead – Workingman's Dead (1970) & Journey – Frontiers (1983)Our journey lands in Northern California—home of counterculture trailblazers, iconic inventions, and musical legends. We spotlight two classic albums from Bay Area giants and dig into what makes the region an endless well for music lovers and explorers alike. What's Inside- Grateful Dead – Workingman's Dead (1970): Palo Alto's Grateful Dead hit a milestone with their fourth studio record—an earthy blend of roots, folk, and country rock, produced by Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor, and the band. We explore how the Dead's acoustic turn, everyday storytelling, and songs like “Black Peter” cemented their place in California music folklore. Lyrical highlights emphasize belonging and transcendence, from Uncle John as a spiritual guide to meditations on life and death.- Journey – Frontiers (1983): Born from the Bay Area's vibrant scene, Journey evolved from jazz-fusion beginnings to arena rock titans. Their 1983 album, Frontiers—driven by soaring Steve Perry vocals and Jonathan Cain's songwriting—pushed into cinematic, synth-heavy rock and delivered some of the era's most enduring pop anthems. It rocketed to #2 on Billboard, sporting unforgettable hits and an iconic music video.- Deep Question Other treasures from Northern California-Diggin'- Bush – I Beat Loneliness (2025): London's alt-rock veterans return with their 10th album, diving into emotional isolation and healing over powerful riffs and raw confessionals. Standouts: “Scars,” “The Land of Milk and Honey,” “We're All the Same on the Inside,” and lead single “60 Ways to Forget People.”- Tears For Fears – Songs from the Big Chair (1985, Vinyl): The British duo's classic, released February 25, 1985, expands their synthpop sound into grand pop-rock storytelling. Includes anthems “Shout,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and “Head Over Heels.”- Limberlost – Beautiful Scars (2025): Seattle's female-fronted rockers blend classic rock, soul, blues, and alternative on their third studio album, spotlighting dual vocalists Brittany Lauren and Sammie Gorham, and the track “Alien.”- Greet Death – Die In Love (2025): Flint, Michigan slowcore/shoegaze trio's third album finds a more balanced emotional perspective, centered on themes of love, loss, and living fully.Discover more great album picks, deep cuts, and passionate music discussion every week on the Six Picks Music Club! What do you think about these Northern California classics or our Six Picks selections? Melissa Newman is a vocalist, teacher, writer and artist who works primarily in porcelain and stoneware. She has shown work in galleries around the Northeast.  After enjoying a lucrative jingle career she continues to perform frequently with her jazz trio. Melissa spent almost 20 years volunteering and working with the inspiring women at Bedford Hills correctional facility, teaching visual and performing arts there and in other communities. She recently co-edited and designed a coffee table book about her parents, Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, Head Over Heels, a Love Affair in Words and Pictures published by Little Brown. On the heels of the HBO Max docuseries The Last Movie Stars on Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward, comes an extraordinary and deeply personal new look inside their private life, affectionately curated by their daughter Melissa Newman. In the lush, illustrated book, HEAD OVER HEELS: Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman: A Love Affair in Words and Pictures (Little, Brown Voracious; October 10, 2023; Hardcover), we are offered a fresh perspective on these storied legends, putting their relationship front and center. Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman became not only movie stars and stage actors, but also artistic collaborators, political activists, and philanthropists whose legacies are expansive and enduringly modern. They are one of America's most indelibly iconic couples and while their love story wasn't always a fairytale, it is the stuff of Hollywood legend. With over 280 photos, including many that have never been published, and text by the book's subjects, all compiled in a luxurious 10”x12” hardcover, the book will be the perfect gift for anyone interested in Hollywood, or in simply celebrating the enduring power of love. Melissa Newman, who purchased her childhood home from her parents, writes in her preface: “In every closet are bags and boxes, layers of ephemera stretching back to the Cretaceous era. Theirs, mine, a sea of words and images.” The book is chock full of handwritten love notes, snapshots and letters; family treasures that have never been released They offer an intimate view of these towering figures in American public life. Along with photographs taken of each other there are well over two hundred taken by some of the most celebrated photographers of our time: Richard Avedon, Sid Avery, Ralph Crane, Bruce Davidson, John Engstead, Leo Fuchs, Milton H. Greene, Philippe Halsman, John R. Hamilton, Leonard McCombe, Gordon Parks, Sanford Roth, Roy Schatt, Lawrence Schiller, Sam Shaw, Bradley Smith, and David Sutton—and  family snapshots capturing candid and telling moments. The photos beautifully illuminate the connection between two complex, passionate artists who opened their hearts and minds to each other for over half a century. Not only will lifelong fans of Paul and Joanne have their love affair with the couple rekindled, but a whole new generation of fans are poised to be drawn into a love affair with Hollywood's golden couple. This book is Melissa's heartfelt gift to her parents—and to all of us.

This week, we are talking about two films starring one of the true all stars of A Tripp Through Comedy: Freddie Prinze, Jr. First, we will talk about Head Over Heels, written by John J. Strauss, Ed Decter and David Kidd and directed by Mark Waters. Next, we will talk about Summer Catch, written by Kevin Falls and John Gatins and directed by Michael Tollin. Both films have Freddie Prinze Jr. involved in a romantic situation while trying to advance his career (sort of). They also did not make much noise at the box office. Along the way, we discuss some creepy subplots, Brian Dennehy, Bruce Davison, fake New York City, fake Cape Cod, our love of baseball, Rear Window, some questionable romances, and podcast regular Matthew Lillard. And Ross reads from Wikipedia lists. What People Get Wrong About Branding Effective branding goes beyond surface-level aesthetics - it's about crafting a compelling narrative that resonates with consumers. However, David has observed that many brands, particularly on short-form media, often miss the mark when it comes to truly understanding and communicating their brand story. The lack of a deep, nuanced grasp of branding can lead to content that fails to bring the brand to life. This is a critical misstep, as storytelling should be a central pillar in forging meaningful connections with the target audience. This storytelling approach fosters a two-way conversation, allowing consumers to feel involved in the narrative. Ultimately, consumers are increasingly drawn to brands that authentically align with their values and experiences and creating these experiences will take a deep understanding of the brand's core identity and a team that cultivates originality and embraces new ideas. Cultivating Originality as the Key to Brand Longevity Brands that fail to embrace originality risk becoming indistinguishable from their competitors, reducing their ability to attract and retain loyal customers. To cultivate originality, they must invest time in understanding their core identity. Branding has become formulaic when it should be about who you want to talk to specifically and how you want to address them. Instead, most brands want to follow trends like being on TikTok because it's the popular thing to do, when their consumer might not even be reached on that platform. Understanding the core identity of a brand involves thorough exploration of its DNA, including its mission, vision, and values. It requires asking the right questions: What do you stand for? Who is your target audience? How can you communicate your message in a way that resonates with that audience? The answers will help brands carve out a unique space in the market that reflects their true essence. Cultivating brand originality is an ongoing process that requires a willingness to adapt. Ultimately, it all comes down to the product - no matter how compelling the brand story, a formulaic offering will struggle to gain traction. Once the brand's core identity and value proposition are defined, the focus should shift to aligning growth strategies with the brand's challenges and aspirations. Identify your challenges and aspirations to form a clear vision of what you want for your business beyond “we want to grow”. For example, if a brand is already recognized within its niche but seeks to reach a broader audience, it should define what that growth looks like. Is it about increasing awareness, generating leads, or enhancing customer engagement? By clarifying these goals, brands can create a roadmap for their branding strategy. The Art of Collaboration as the Secret to Creative Success The ability to generate and execute innovative ideas is paramount in this industry, and to David something very much linked to team work. He recounts the time he worked on a commercial featuring Sarah Jessica Parker developing  the concept of a fragrance bottle. Initially, someone proposed the idea of the fragrance bottle going missing, leading to a series of creative developments that would capture the public's imagination. The campaign was tremendously successful and exemplifies how a single idea can serve as a foundation for a larger narrative, but it is teamwork that enables this idea to flourish. The team included members from various departments—media, public relations, and brand management—all of whom brought unique perspectives to the table. They had just one rule: no bad ideas, no buts. This diversity of thought allowed them to expand on the initial idea in ways that a single individual might not have envisioned. By contrast, the creation of the Netflix model was about taking a bad idea and disproving it quickly, which helped them avoid the pitfalls of falling in love with a flawed idea. Initially, the co-founders thought of renting VHS tapes through the mail. However, it seemed impractical due to the challenges of shipping bulky tapes. By the time DVDs came out, they decided to test the idea and were able to validate the concept within a day, allowing them to move forward with confidence. This rapid validation process prevented them from investing unnecessary time in a non-viable idea and set the stage for their eventual success. In both cases, fostering a culture of experimentation helped these brands prioritize rapid validation and remain true to their core identity, which was the difference to not only stand out but also forge meaningful connections with consumers, ultimately driving engagement and loyalty.
