** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 28:  Jazz saxophonist, songwriter, label owner, music & film producer, and educator James “Plunky” Branch. Since the early 1970s, he has led his band, originally known as Juju and today as Oneness, through some 30 albums and hundreds of performances throughout the world. He has been on bills with stars like Patti LaBelle, Ray Charles, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Frankie Beverly and Maze, served as a studio musician for The Cosby Show, and has appeared on several avant-garde jazz albums. His latest 2025 album is titled, Made Through Ritual.  Special thanks to Paris Ford for facilitating this interview. RECORDED MAY 2025 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Her book, Train Your Head and Your Body Will Follow, distills decades of wisdom into a practical framework for rewiring habits, resetting focus, and building a joyful foundation for productivity. If you've ever felt like stress, negativity, or “decision fatigue” were holding you back, this episode will give you the tools and the inspiration to take charge of your mornings and your mindset. The original Count--Butch Burden is still thumping the bass and singing the songs. Count & The Colony were the up-and-coming band in the mid-60s, hitting the road with Question Mark & The Mysterians, as well flagging shared management with Lilly Gonzales, touring in the Count's teen years. The road was no stumbling block, providing city-to-city exposure, parties, and dedication to craft which remains to this day. Then the money dried up. A Tangerine Records contract with the Ray Charles Estate included four originals that have never been released.    Burden took his rich vocals, showmanship, and musical drive back home to Mid-Michigan where he continues to reside, 60 years later. His shows are documented in this two-part series through time, story, and epic detail. The bands that he jammed with, the music he created, and the longing to continue to be in a cover oriented group, Count & The Change, giving him a lifetime as a musician.    Here in Part 2 of 2, Butch dives into the hotel residencies with Amphagas that put the spotlight on the band with the likes of Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Little River Band, George Benson, Liza Minelli, and moments with Robert Plant and Patti LaBelle that made up fantastic memories. We would like to thank Butch's wife Cindie for assisting in bringing archives and reminding Butch of memories along the way. Part 2 of 2 is ready to serve now in the MMHP in the 989!

Think about your closet. You're probably not wearing the same outfits you rocked ten years ago, I know I'm not. But just because you don't reach for that jacket anymore doesn't mean it didn't keep you warm back in 2012. You don't trash-talk it, you simply acknowledge: it served its purpose for that season. The same goes for people. Some were with you in your “jean jacket” season, laid back, finding your style. Some walked with you in your “Sunday best” season, polished, purpose-driven, showing up sanctified. And some? They were there in your “sackcloth and ashes” season, when life was unraveling, and you barely held it together. But every one of them helped shape your look, your journey, your growth. They were part of the wardrobe that styled your soul.Closing Songs:Changed by Patti Labelle & Debra Joy WinansLord & Friend by CeCe Winanswww.BibleDeliverance.org

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay stop by a strip club while on duty to talk about an action-comedy classic, 'Beverly Hills Cop.' Bombay opens up discussion about this fish out of water tale of a Detroit cop with some stories about his family dealing with cops while living in Detroit. Then the fellas dive into the movie, which has a thin plot that is just an excuse to let prime Eddie Murphy riff, and let killer '80s songs rip. The inciting incident involves Murphy's Axel Foley being visited by a "hoodlum" friend from his past, and that leads to Andy recalling when he had to cut ties with an uninvited house guest. In the flick, that leads to Axel heading out to Beverly Hills where he befriends mismatched friends Taggart and Rosewood while talking himself out of countless situations by lying on the fly. Comedy does the heavy lifting, but there's some great action set pieces, a screaming irate police captain — which Hollywood needs to bring back as a trope — and infectious tunes peppered throughout. It closes with a freeze frame of Murphy making a goofy face into the camera before cueing up a Patti LaBelle track. Much like the film being discussed, the fellas do not take themselves very seriously this episode.

Send us a textI am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Carol Riddick. We were introduced to Carol on The Soul Train Cruise, where she was one of performers ranging from Soul Train TV show stars like Shalimar, to contemporary favorites like Carol. We enjoyed it so much that we booked for 2026. If you listened to our reflections of the cruise a few weeks ago on Ep 165 The Soul Train Cruise I think it would be clear the person that ‘stole the show' for us was Carol Riddick. The thing is, unlike the dozens of old school performers on the cruise, we weren't familiar with Carol when we boarded! Carol Riddick, an artist who has graced stages across the globe winning fans and admirers alike with her extraordinary voice and presence. Highly regarded in the music community for her vocal dexterity, mesmerizing performances and genuinely warm personality, Carol is a unique entertainer whose evolution is ongoing. She has blessed the tracks of many distinguished artists and is featured on records by Anthony Hamilton, Musiq (Soulchild), Jill Scott, Will Downing, Norman Brown, Jeff Bradshaw, and a host of others. Most recently she can be heard on Eric Bellinger's 2022 Grammy nominated album on the track “Shine on the World”. After partnering with Axis Music Group, a former Philadelphia-based production company, Carol started an independent label “CriddickNotes” and creatively spearheaded the creation and release of her debut CD, “Moments Like This”. She also co-wrote, produced, and sang “Nuances”, the intro to Philly's WDAS FM 105.3's “Quiet Storm” program which can be heard weeknights and most recently tapped into her communications background as she hosted her own radio show titled “Love & Life with Carol Riddick” on WURD Radio, the only African-American owned talk radio station in Pennsylvania (and one of only three remaining in the country).  In addition to her recording efforts, Carol lends her impressive vocals to other artists, like Philadelphia's Queen, Patti LaBelle and Jazz great, Gerald Veasley, but most notably, her live performance with R&B crooner, Will Downing of the riveting duet “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This,” is sure to tRelying on ship wifi is slow, unsecure, sometimes not available & at foreign ports travelers don't want to pay their carriers' high fees.
