This Saturday on Vintage Classic Radio's "Saturday Matinee," we start with the "Archie Andrews" show where the episode titled “Free Movie Tickets,” originally broadcasted on September 25, 1948, brings laughter and chaos. Archie Andrews, voiced by Bob Hastings, finds himself the lucky recipient of two movie tickets, leading to a humorous conflict as both Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, played by Rosemary Rice and Gloria Mann respectively, vie for the chance to be his date. Jughead Jones, portrayed by Harlan Stone, and Archie's mother, voiced by Alice Yourman, add to the comic mix with their own quirky antics. Following the comedic start, we dive into a star-studded "Command Performance" episode from December 25, 1948, guest-hosted by Bob Hope. This special holiday broadcast features performances and skits by Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra, creating a festive atmosphere filled with song and laughter, perfect for the Christmas season. The matinee concludes with "Skippy Hollywood Theatre," presenting the episode "High Polish" from September 17, 1948. In this episode, Jane Russell stars in a gripping narrative about a young shoeshine boy in Hollywood who dreams of a bigger life amidst the stars and studio lights. The episode captures the aspirational and often harsh realities of Hollywood through a poignant story that mixes ambition with the glitz of show business. Each episode brings its unique flavor to the airwaves, combining humor, drama, and the timeless charm of radio's golden age, ensuring an entertaining afternoon for all listeners.

In this charming episode, newspaper editor Susan Armstrong and her star reporter, George Harvey, find themselves embroiled in an investigation of a series of high-society thefts, leading to unexpected comedy and intrigue. The episode stars Fred MacMurray as George and Irene Dunne as Susan. Next, we revisit the comedic antics of "My Friend Irma" in the episode "Double Surprise" broadcasted on December 22, 1947. In this holiday special, Irma Peterson tries to plan a surprise party for her roommate Jane Stacy, but in typical Irma fashion, the plans go hilariously awry. This beloved series features Marie Wilson as the delightfully ditzy Irma and Cathy Lewis as the sensible Jane Stacy. Concluding the lineup, the "Skippy Hollywood Theatre" presents "Romance Incorporated" from June 20, 1947. This episode spins a tale about a Hollywood scriptwriter who concocts a plot to bring two estranged lovers back together, only to find himself falling for the leading lady. The cast includes Jackie Cooper as the imaginative writer and Lurene Tuttle as the fetching actress. Each show from this era brings its unique flavor of nostalgia, humor, and drama, making for a perfect blend of entertainment for our listeners.

Anthony also co-hosts with writer Stacie Ponder the queer feminist horror podcast “Gaylords of Darkness.”A member of the Confederated Grand Ronde Tribes, Siletz, he recently was one of four Indigenous artists to present work in an exhibit titled “Always Here” at The Arts Center in Corvallis, OR. In the exhibit, he and his fellow artists separately and collaboratively created conceptual pieces that upended perceptions of what Native art can or should be.Anthony also wrote the solo autobiographical play “Looking for Tiger Lily,” which he has performed in theaters all over the country and has toured internationally, from Melbourne to Vancouver. He is currently adapting the play into a book.In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Anthony explains how he developed Carla Rossi and her particular flavor of drag performance and describes the joys and dangers of being an outspoken queer clown when drag in particular has become such a dangerous cultural flashpoint.https://www.thecarlarossi.com/https://theartscenter.net/always-here/https://www.grandronde.org/history-culture/culture/chachalu-museum-and-cultural-center/

Dan Halsted is one of the premier film programmers in the United States. In addition to his role as head programmer for the historic Hollywood Theatre in Portland, OR, Dan has amassed a collection of some of the most vital kung fu and exploitation films in existence. He's salvaged the only known prints of several classics, he holds one of a small handful of many more, and he's attracted the company of figures like Quentin Tarantino and RZA along the way. We talked to Dan just before AN EXPLOITATION EXTRAVAGANZA, an exhibition of several such prints in February 2023, including one film (Joseph Kuo's 1977 kung fu classic 7 GRANDMASTERS) and a bunch of old trailers on film. In this conversation, we chat about the program, how Dan came to know and love the Trylon, the shifting demographics for film screening, and what it's like to look back on a career of rescuing films firsthand before they're lost forever. Oregon movie theatre owners and operators are awaiting a response to the letter they sent Gov. Kate Brown asking why theatres are subject to different reopening metrics than other places, like churches. Meanwhile, some theatres are turning to online screenings, private showings and selling concessions. Portland's Hollywood Theatre is also doing online and private screenings. This summer they played a series of drive-in shows at the convention center before wildfires devastated communities and filled others with toxic levels of smoke. In Silverton, the operators of the Palace Theatre made the decision to close for good. COVID-19 was not the only factor in the theatre's series of setbacks, but it was a big one. Our featured movie guests are Doug Whyte of the Hollywood Theatre and Roger Paulson of the Palace Theatre in Silverton.

The book traces the evolution of Portland from the early years of photography to the present, showing how it became Oregon’s largest and most vibrant city.Set against the backdrop of snow-capped Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens, Portland’s skyline is a mixture of ultra-modern skyscrapers and elaborate Victorian structures that reveal a rich architectural heritage. Originally no more than a cluster of log structures and wood-frame buildings carved out of the dense forest, "Stumptown" soon became the Pacific Northwest’s premier freshwater port, filled with supply ships bound for the gold fields of California, but also intent on becoming a cultural center. This fascinating book traces the evolution of this popular tourist destination from a small town long dominated by cast-iron, terracotta and brick buildings to a city with ornate mansions, carefully designed neighborhoods, and a downtown that bespeaks pride in good city planning. Rather than cancel or postpone the festival until thingsare “safe”, which only increases the stress and uncertainty of thesetimes, going forward with a streaming event offers important reliefand a sense of stability to horror fans who are stuck at home. Beyondhelping horror filmmakers and fans, ticket sales will also benefit thehistoric non-profit Hollywood Theatre, the seat of independent cinemain Portland, which is currently closed due to the pandemic. Karaoke Night All films will be integrated into carefully curated nightly shows andsecurely streamed during limited event hours for ticketed audiencemembers. Because a film festival is more than just watching movies, nightly programming will feature both pre-recorded and live content, including film introductions, interviews with horror icons, and livefilmmaker Q&As that the audience can take part in. “Our goal is tofoster the sense of community that makes our fest so magical, with afun and eventful stage and screen show... just on a virtual stage,”said Brian Callahan. Little Willy This year’s feature film lineup opens on Wednesday, June 17th withWild Boar, starring Augie Duke and Daniel Roebuck as geocachers whoquest for a legendary treasure, only to end up as fodder for mutantpig-men. They're celebrating the transformation with an open house on Feb. 25.“The fact that the city has this asset, where anybody can come off the street, for practically free of charge, and learn how to tell a story,” says Justen Harn, “it is amazing.”Harn was part of the team that transformed the Hollywood Theatre from a dilapidated, second-run movie house into an innovative cinema and community hub. He we hired as the executive director at PCM a year ago with the instructions to create a more global vision for the organization, focused on programs, equity, and the future. With a budget of roughly $2.5 million drawn mostly from fees paid by cable service providers, PCM oversees five cables stations that serve an audience of 2.5 million.Harn gave us a tour, along with the director of strategy and development, Rebecca Burrell, who signed on to work with Harn from her post as the head of the Right Brain Initiative at the Regional Arts and Culture Council. Portlanders love to love their airport. There's the Stumptown coffee, the Powell's bookstore, the local restaurants, and perhaps the most photographed carpet in the world. So what else could PDX put in front of passengers? While other airports add yoga rooms and rooftops pools in the quest to tempt travelers, PDX has welcomed an outpost of the iconic Hollywood Theater to be America's only airport cinema. On a typical January morning at the Portland International Airport, a not so typical passenger unloaded at the departure drop-off area.A team used a crane to transfer a 28-foot-long sign from a flatbed trailer to a set of wheels. Anyone who's driven down Portland's Sandy Boulevard would recognize it: it's styled after the Hollywood Theatre marquee. “I get goose bumps watching it roll in,” said Hollywood's executive director, Doug Whyte, in front of the Delta ticketing booth as the team pushed the sign past the Portland Roasting Company kiosk. “Usually things come in through the causeway, but it's too big, so we actually have to bring it in through the front door. And it has to go through TSA, so it should be an interesting day to say the least.”Since taking over in 2011, Whyte has overseen the transformation of the nonprofit theater into one of the leading art house cinemas in the country. Then he read an article about an Imax theater at the Hong Kong airport and saw an opportunity to reach a bigger audience: some 18 million pairs of eyes a year.“We approached the airport, and funny enough they had actually been thinking it would be cool to have a movie theater,” he said. “It was kismet. We worked it out so it could go under their public art program.”Read the full story: http://www.opb.org/radio/article/hollywood-theatre-opens-at-pdx-airport/

For nearly 40 years, the painter Farooq Hassan showed work in museums all over the Middle East, including the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad, and designed many Iraqi stamps. After the U.S. invasion in 2003, everything changed. Hassan's daughter Dalia Hussein worked for the U.S. military and the "Washington Post" for six years before she became such a target for anti-American forces that they sought safe harbor in the U.S. Incorporating vibrant colors and collage, Hassan’s work now focuses on Iraqi women afflicted with the wounds of war. Although they are now citizens, Hassan and Hussein are uncertain what the future may hold for them here in the US. Director and Actor Elizabeth Huffman on Displacement - 7:13Living as a displaced person is perhaps less about the country stamped on your visa, and more about learning to live in the face of loss. Portland-based Syrian-American director and actor Elizabeth Huffman expresses this loss in all avenues of her work. She is currently directing “At the Periphery” by Turkish playwright Sedef Ecermas, which will have a staged reading on Feb. 4 as part of Boom Arts' Global Voices Lab, a festival of timely plays from around the world (Feb. 4–11). There’s Powell’s, Stumptown Coffee, the local restaurants, and perhaps the most beloved carpet in the world. So what else could PDX put in front of passengers? In early 2016, film audiences, artists and critics pointed out festering problems with the overwhelming whiteness of the Hollywood movie industry. One year later, you can walk into metro-area theaters and see films like "Fences," "Moonlight," and "Hidden Figures" rewriting the script for how far black artists and directors can go. If the films in wide release leave you hungry for more, the Portland Black Film Festival gets in gear Feb. 9–20 with everything from Prince’s electric concert film “Sign O’ The Times” to Raoul Peck’s James Baldwin doc "I Am Not Your Negro" to Pam Grier in the iconic “Coffy." And to top it off, Grier will be in attendance for a Q&A on Feb. 11. Serious.Portland Holds First Arvo Pärt Festival in U.S. Portland-based vocal ensemble Cappella Romana creates otherworldly mystic sounds with layers of harmony, plumbing that space where Eastern and Western sacred music meet. While most of their repertory involves the old world, one contemporary composer embodies their approach to choral music — Arvo Pärt. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Cappella Romana has joined with the Third Angle New Music Ensemble and other musicians to organize the first North American festival dedicated to Pärt. From Feb. 5–12, they will offer eight live chamber performances, documentary film screenings and lectures interpreting the most performed living composer in the world.

Buster Keaton's Oregon-Filmed 'The General' Tours State With A New Score

Filmed in Cottage Grove, Buster Keaton's 1926 silent film, “The General,” is considered one of the greatest movies of all time. Telling the story of a blundering train conductor who inadvertently saves the Confederate Army during the Civil War, it mixed a then-unique blend of Keaton's trademark slapstick with action and drama, not to mention one of the most ambitious stunts of the silent era. In a celluloid coincidence of cosmic proportions, the Hollywood Theatre is also celebrating its 90th anniversary this year with a summer of special screenings and events, and what better way to celebrate than to throw a co-birthday party? The Hollywood commissioned the well-known Oregon composer Mark Orton to create an original score for “The General” and tour it around the state with a live ensemble, starting at the Hollywood on Aug. 12 and stopping in Cottage Grove (Aug. 13), Coos Bay (Aug. 14), Bend (Aug. 16) and Klamath Falls (Aug. 17), before returning to the Hollywood on Aug. 19.“I think Keaton's humor is like no other,” says Orton of why he chose to take on the project. “He can do more with the absence of expression in terms of humor than people do with all their antics and gesticulation.”Orton first came upon Keaton's films in his 20s while working as an audio engineer for the Bill Frisell Trio, which toured Frisell's own scores to some of Keaton's films. Orton has since made a name for himself first as a member of Tin Hat, an eclectic ensemble that makes the kind of music NPR listeners love, and then as a composer for films, documentaries and performances. He has soundtracked everything from Alexander Payne's “Nebraska” to Ken Burns' “The Roosevelts” and episodes for "This American Life."For our radio feature above, Orton gave us a tour of his studio, which is packed full of antique instruments, including period pieces like a field organ and minstrel banjo, before taking us through how he composed the score.Over the years, Orton has visited many of the Cottage Grove sites in “The General.” Keaton, who also wrote and directed the movie, chose to film it in Cottage Grove because it had a certain old-timey, Southern feel during the 1920s, plus a stretch of low-traffic train tracks for the train chase scene. He employed some 500 Oregon Guard members as extras to play both Union and Confederate soldiers. For those who want to retrace Keaton's steps, the Cottage Grove Historical Society has scheduled a number of August events in and around the town to celebrate.

Our columnist-in-residence, Randy Gragg, talked with the building's architect Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture about the design of the building, factors that went into why it looks the way it does, and what sets it apart.Erin McKeown Takes Prayer into the Bathroom with the Queer GospelErin McKeown got her start in the New England folk scene, but she’s since grown into a genre dancer of the highest order, gliding from folk to big band to gospel without straining her crystal clear voice. But even for an artist who regularly tackles politics and social justice, something feels particularly urgent about the six songs that make up her first studio album in three years, the EP “According to Us.” She released its first single, “The Queer Gospel,” just days after the Orlando shooting at the Pulse Nightclub. Shows, records, openings, performances, books, festivals — we've enjoyed an unusual amount of beauty in 2015. So we thought we’d take a look back at some of our favorite moments. The Hollywood Theatre Redefines the Modern Movie PalaceYou haven’t seen “2001: A Space Odyssey” unless you've seen it the way it was supposed to be seen: on ultrawide, deliciously detailed 70-millimeter celluloid. Local Kubrick buffs were lucky enough to enjoy that experience in March thanks to the Hollywood Theatre, which revived the storied 70 mm format after a cinematic treasure hunt. Now, the theater is one of only 100 on the continent to screen the 70mm extended edition of Quentin Tarantino’s newest, “The Hateful Eight.” The Hollywood is on its way to becoming one of the most dynamic movie houses in the country, and the guys who run the venue gave us a sneak preview of what's planned for 2016, including its unlikely expansion to the C Concourse at the Portland Airport. (Movies while we wait for our flights? Count us in!)The Ethereal Harmonies of Joseph - 10:09We’ve had the pleasure of having many amazing musicians into the OPB studio this year. It’s nearly impossible to pick favorites, but we just can’t get the sound of the band Joseph out of our head. The band is three sisters, Allison, Meegan and Natalie Closner, who grew up on a small farm in Estacada. Unlike many musical siblings, they didn’t grow up harmonizing, but they've made up for lost time. Watch their performance in the OPB studio, and then catch them live in February in Bend, Eugene and Portland. A Debut Novel From a Former Portland Poster Girl - 17:35Renaissance woman Miranda July has won filmmaking awards at Cannes and Sundance, captured a prestigious Frank O’Connor award for her short stories, been included in Whitney Biennials for her multimedia and performance art, and even designed an app. But she had never published a novel until this year, when she released “The First Bad Man." Turns out, the book’s awkward protagonist fit in quite nicely with July’s other creations. "Shy" R&B Crooner Flirts with the Big Time - 23:12So here's the confusing state of music monikers in Oregon: Joseph is three women, and the R&B outfit Shy Girls is one guy, Dan Vidmar. But like the sisters, he's doing it for himself. Early this year, Vidmar dropped his much-anticipated first full-length release, a mixtape dubbed “4WZ." And he's splitting his days between Portland and the big-time scene in Los Angeles, which is where we found him. You can here the full interview here. and find "4WZ" and many of his other tracks on his Soundcloud page. Shakespeare Gets the Beat with The Go-Go's - 31:15Playwright Jeff Whitty is best known for writing the book for “Avenue Q,” the Tony-winning adult puppet musical that featured songs like “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” and “The Internet is for Porn.” Whitty grew up in Coos Bay, and he returned to the state this year to premiere a new musical at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival called “Head Over Heels.” It mashes up an Elizabethan epic, “The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia,” with, of all things, the music of the ‘80s all-girl rock band The Go-Go’s. And, spoiler alert: The Go-Go's loved it. Remembering Allen Touissant - 40:53On November 10, we lost one of the architects of the Crescent City sound. Allen Toussaint produced hundreds of records — including Dr. John’s “Right Place Wrong Time,” Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” and many influential records with his studio’s house band, The Meters — and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Allen Toussaint spoke to us in June from his home studio in New Orleans, leading us through a life of legendary music, before appearing at the Waterfront Blues Festival for what would be his final performance in Portland.

Whether you've seen Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic “2001: A Space Odyssey” or not, you know its cultural traces. There's the opening music (actually a work by Richard Strauss). There's the monotone, disembodied voice of Hal: “I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.”But chances are you haven't seen and heard it the way it was supposed to screen: in the exceptionally crisp, immersive and gargantuan 70 millimeter format. The film has all but vanished since the early ‘90s. But after a countrywide cinematic treasure hunt of sorts, the Hollywood Theater — on the march to becoming one of the most dynamic movie houses in the country — is bringing the storied 70mm format back to life with four screenings of the classic next weekend. The first three sold out immediately, and the fourth, on March 23 at 2pm, goes on sale today.“I don't know if I appreciated [the movie] that much until it showed in 70mm in 1991 at Cinemagic,” says projection technician Joel Miller, who owns NW Projection and has played an instrumental role at the Hollywood in tracking down all the sprockets, lenses, and film gates necessary to screen the film. “That was an experience that I will never forget. That made me realize this is only way to see this movie.” Read our full story.

We hear about the treasure hunt behind tracking down the now defunct technology. Well, almost defunct: the Hollywood might just debut Quentin Tarantino's new film with it, too 15:29 - New in paperback: Rene Denfeld's affecting novel of prison life,"The Enchanted." 23:49 - KMHD sits down with Nicholas Payton for "A Jazz Life." 27:26 - More details on which historic figures will represent Oregon at the National Statuary Hall Collection. 33:23 - Feast on an opbmusic session with Ural Thomas & the Pain as the band goes on tour around the state for McMenamins' Great NW Music Tour. 37:28 - Painter Roger Shimomura's vibrant, provocative show at Hallie Ford Museum. 46:19 - A new story collection called "The Uncanny Reader" walks the line with “possibly supernatural” fiction.
