The Try That In A Small Town crew dives into the 2024 ACM Awards – the politics, the snubs, and the few moments that actually delivered. From Morgan Wallen being shut out, to Ella Langley's historic run, to Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert, Zach Top, Kane Brown, Parker McCollum, and more, the guys break down who deserved what and where country music is really headed. They also talk about TikTok-ready story songs like “Choosing Texas,” the future of traditional-leaning artists, how award shows are losing legitimacy with fans, and why the industry keeps cloning the same “country boy” image. Plus: a small-town hero who saved a family from a fire, drive-thru rim damage, broken-English call centers, and a McDonald's “fresh” muffin story. Perfect for country fans, songwriters, and anyone who's over the BS of modern award shows. Chad's solo on the mic with a lot on his mind and a few things he wants you to know about. First up is Freedom Hunters. Founded by Anthony Pace, Freedom Hunters gets returning veterans, active duty, and special forces out into the field. Hunting trips, fishing excursions, time in God's country. Chad's been in the blind with these warriors, and he'll tell you straight about how much it matters. The Freedom Hunters Nashville Classic is Sunday, June 21st and Monday, June 22nd, at the Nashville Palace and Hermitage Golf Club. Tables are available. Come shake some hands. Then there's the Silent Valor Project. This is a newer organization that Chad's been asked to join the board of. The mission is getting special forces operators transitioned into the private sector when their service is done. Rangers, SEALs, the ones you can't even name. They fought for this country, and then the country makes it hard for them to find work. This project wants to change that. June 24th in Las Vegas, Seth Vandover and his band are throwing down at Caspians inside Caesars Palace. Kenny Chesney's at the Sphere that night. This is the after-party. Proceeds go to the Silent Valor Project. And if you're in Temecula, Gary LaVox, lead singer of Rascal Flatts, is doing an acoustic performance at Hendo's Barrel House on June 11th. It's almost sold out, so move fast. Chad loves this country. He loves the people who protect it. This episode is his way of saying so. This episode is brought to you by The Silent Valor Project, Freedom Hunters, Demerbox, Almost Heaven Saunas, and The Nashville Palace. Lets go!

From the Patriot Mobile studio powered by E|Spaces, the guys dive into a packed episode of Try That In A Small Town. They kick things off by reacting to the latest ACM Award nominations: who belongs, who doesn't, and why politics still run the game. Entertainer, Group, Duo, New Artist, Album, Song, Single, and Musical Event of the Year all get the TTIAST treatment, with plenty of opinions on names like Morgan Wallen, Jason Aldean, Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Alabama, Zac Brown Band, Parmalee, and more. Kelly shares a huge personal milestone: after interning for Reba's company back in the 90s, he finally lands his first Reba cut on a song written in 2005. That opens up a conversation about prayer, persistence, and whether Christians should pray about career and business. The guys revisit the backstory of “If I Didn't Love You” (Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood), from losing a duet slot to writing something ultra-specific on a deadline and watching it connect. In the fan-favorite Dip Shitty-its segment, they unload on Masters “pond jumpers,” public bathroom pee etiquette, clapping when servers drop dishes, trash in urinals, rental car abuse, and more everyday behaviors that drive them crazy. They close with a powerful Small Town Hero story from Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, where a principal charged an armed student, took a bullet, and likely saved lives. It's exactly the kind of “try that in a small town” courage the show was built to highlight. If you like country music, songwriting war stories, small town grit, and unfiltered opinions, this one delivers from front to back. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with pedal steel guitarist Travis Toy for a wide-ranging conversation about craft, longevity, and what it really takes to build a career on the road. Travis has spent decades shaping the sound of modern country music—from his long run with Rascal Flatts to his current role touring with Luke Bryan—and his perspective comes from thousands of nights onstage. We start by tracing his musical roots in Kentucky, where Travis grew up surrounded by music and developed an early obsession with the pedal steel guitar. Those early years of practice and curiosity laid the foundation for the disciplined approach he still brings to every gig today. From there, we talk about the realities of the Nashville scene: arriving in town, finding opportunities, and slowly building a reputation that leads to bigger stages and long-term touring gigs. Travis shares stories from his early days in Nashville and reflects on what it meant to spend years touring with Rascal Flatts before stepping into a new chapter with Luke Bryan. We also dig into his solo instrumental record and why writing original music was important to him. Along the way, Travis talks about how his background as a drummer and his love of fusion music still influence his phrasing and groove on pedal steel. It's a thoughtful look at touring culture, social media, and the mindset required to stay grounded in a career that lives on the road.Key TakeawaysMastery starts early — Travis's obsessive practice as a young musician shaped the discipline he brings to every gig.Pedal steel continues to evolve — modern players are expanding the instrument beyond traditional roles.Reputation matters in Nashville — professionalism and reliability open doors to long-term touring work.Touring is a long game — sustaining a career on the road requires balance, perspective, and resilience.Musical influences cross genres — Travis's background as a drummer and fusion fan shapes his approach to steel guitar.Writing original music can deepen your voice — his solo record gave him space to explore the instrument in new ways.Longevity comes from staying grounded — focusing on the music and the people around it keeps the career moving forward.Music from the EpisodeEntry Point (Travis Toy)JDT (Travis Toy)Wingman (Travis Toy)Alabama Jubilee (Travis Toy)Hot Button (Travis Toy)About the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. We are looking at popular songs over the last 40 years or so… and seeing how some are eerily prophetic or in other words, ring true to what we feel and go through! We are going to study them specifically because their lyrics and significance tends to tell us things that align with scripture and about God.
If you've been Waiting All Your Life for a follow-up to our Rascal Flatts episode (18), this is your time!! With the band officially re-formed and on their own redemption tour, we figured the Year Of Redemption was the perfect time to check out their self-titled debut album! After Me And My Gang pierced our nostalgic rose-colored glasses, we'll learn if getting right down to the DNA of Rascal Flatts' boy band-esque country sound can recalibrate our perceptions. After a fortuitous founding in a Nashville club, Jay, Gary, and Joe Don introduced themselves to the world with memorable tracks like Prayin' For Daylight, This Everyday Love, and I'm Movin' On. With sleek harmonies, hooky choruses, and a family-friendly polish, find out what's made the band so unreplicatable over the decades.James & Connor will talk about why Me And My Gang went sideways and dive deeper into the band's founding. A lot has changed since Episode 18! We'll revisit Hot Chicken Takeover (RIP) and the creation of Spinny, and then talk about what Rascal Flatts has been up to for the last five years (and why reunion seemed so out of reach)! Then The Mixtaper shocks us during Fact Or Spin as we learn the expensive REAL origins behind the band's name, visit a secret supper club, and learn to Walk The Llama Llama... it's truly deep-cut, must-see Rascal Flatts lore. Generation Radio return with “Take Two”, the eagerly awaited follow-up to their acclaimed debut, delivering another masterclass in AOR/West Coast rock infused with just the right touch of the Nashville sound. Produced by founding members Jay DeMarcus (Rascal Flatts) and Jason Scheff (former Chicago), the band features an all-star lineup: Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Average White Band) joins on drums, replacing the formidable Deen Castronovo (who returned to Journey as full-time member), while Tom Yankton (guitar, vocals) and Chris Rodriguez (guitar, vocals) round out the powerhouse ensemble. DeMarcus said: “It was so much fun getting to make another record! We've been working on this one for a while and we can't wait for everyone to hear what we've been up to. Ever wonder why certain songs follow you from ballparks to bar bands to late-night TV finales? We take a playful but pointed run at the “most overplayed song” ever with a live listener bracket that pits Free Bird, Don't Stop Believin', Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl, and more in a ruthless showdown. Along the way, we unpack what repetition really means, how stadium anthems, wedding playlists, and radio gold become rituals that comfort some of us and exhaust the rest. You'll leave with your hill to die on and a few hot takes from fellow fans to test your case. Before the sparks fly, we open with a rapid-fire look at Ella Langley, state champion dancer, voice-shifting surgery, a pellet gun for pests, bangs born from a bad haircut, and a one-pickle pre-show ritual that weirdly works. That personal color tees up a high-energy country news sweep: Lainey Wilson teams with Kevin Costner on The Grey House soundtrack beside titans like Willie Nelson and Shania Twain; Riley Green stretches into acting with a Yellowstone-adjacent series; Rascal Flatts hit RodeoHouston; Meghan Moroney and Ella Langley notch a chart milestone for women in country; Thomas Rhett welcomes baby number five; Luke Combs and Dierks Bentley map new tours; and LeAnn Rimes and Rodney Crowell drop fresh tracks. We also spotlight the Recording Academy's new Best Traditional Country Album category debuting in 2026—an overdue nod to classic songwriting and instrumentation. We round things out with a tight chart countdown spanning radio favorites and indie gems, a March 2016 flashback that tracks how we got here, and a lively mailbag: production vs. songwriting first impressions, dream guests (from Rick Beato to Mutt Lange and Kelly Clarkson), and the gear that changed everything as studios moved from tape to Pro Tools. It's a full-spectrum listen for country fans, music nerds, and anyone who has ever yelled “Free Bird!” at the wrong time.Episode LinksBob Bullock: https://jayfranze.com/episode28/Dave Jackson: https://jayfranze.com/episode53/Dalila Mya: https://jayfranze.com/episode102/Mark Badolato: https://jayfranze.com/episode140/Send a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Contact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Services: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Books: https://jayfranze.com/books/ Merchandise Merchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/ Support Support: https://jayfranze.com/support/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/

Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling singer-songwriter Eric Paslay joins me to talk about about the night he drew my song idea out of a hat.Eric brought his unique songwriting experience, "Song In A Hat" to Hop On A Cure's "Harmony for Hope"" event and something magical happened there. My "Song In A Hat" idea was randomly drawn. This led to me joining musicians Eric Paslay, Kristian Bush, Chris Gelbuda, Cyndi Thomson and DJ Goodman on stage to witness my song idea turn into an actual song - in under just 10 minutes. My idea was "Come Into Our World." My intent was to have a song created that would invite others to understand ALS and join our fight for a cure. Here we learn more about this master of music, talk about that evening and how we can wrap up the song and release to the world. Eric has made a significant impact on the music industry with his hit singles "Friday Night", "Song About a Girl", and "She Don't Love You". He has written and co-written many hits for other artists, including Lady A, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Amy Grant, Dierks Bentley, Charles Kelley and more. Eric co-wrote Jake Owen's "Barefoot Blue Jean Night", the Will Hoge/Eli Young Band song "Even If It Breaks Your Heart", and Love and Theft's "Angel Eyes" all of which were number 1 singles on the country charts. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 10 years old, and uses his platform to advocate for diabetes awareness, inspiring and supporting others living with the condition.Listen in to our heartfelt and powerful conversation bursting with HOPE. Think the Grammys always reward the biggest voices? We put that idea on trial. From Luke Combs and Blake Shelton to Eric Church and Martina McBride, we map the stunning list of country heavyweights with multiple nominations and zero wins—and ask what those numbers really say about merit, timing, and taste. Then we widen the lens: Jelly Roll's breakout sweep, Zac Top's historic Traditional Country win, and how a single new category can rewrite a career's story overnight. We keep the momentum with a packed news slate: Lainey Wilson's cryptic “Can't Sit Still” teasers and possible Netflix tie‑in, Hardy's cinematic multi‑generational collab featuring Tim McGraw, Eric Church, and Morgan Wallen, Tim McGraw's Pawn Shop Guitar tour routing through Fenway Park, and The Voice's two‑hour season launch after the Winter Games. Along the way, we talk performance versus polish, the role of auto‑tune in modern crossovers, and why some artists soar on stage even if the trophies never land. Our community brings the heat with the Question of the Day: name an artist who left a famous band and built a real solo legacy. From Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Stevie Nicks, and Peter Gabriel to Darius Rucker and Peter Cetera, your picks fuel a rapid-fire tour through rock, country, pop, and beyond. We balance it with a transparent look at the business: do labels still help, or are they just advances with branding? Is touring truly profitable for rising acts in vans and trailers? And how do indie artists build durability when playlist spikes fade?We round it out with a sharp chart rundown—main and indie—plus a 2006 flashback to Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, and George Strait, showing how yesterday's storytelling still shapes today's sound. If you love country music, industry strategy, and a lively back-and-forth that doesn't hedge, this one's for you.Enjoyed the show? “At what point does a documentary cross the line from tribute… to total misrepresentation?”That's the question Ben, Skin, KT, and Krystina dive into as they unravel the bizarre controversy behind Netflix's upcoming documentary The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band says they were deceived — and the crew has thoughts. Then — complete whiplash — the crew shifts gears for a musical face‑plant of historic proportions. Rascal Flatts fans are furious, and the audio doesn't lie. When Krystina plays an absolutely brutal concert clip, KT's instinctive response becomes the moment of the episode:“Oh my God… he sounds like a dying cougar.”The laughter spirals as the team debates vocal decline, acapella expectations, and the ethics of performing when your vocal cords have fully filed for divorce.

A caller raises the alarm about the growing trend of coaches pulling out of interviews, and the guys connect it to what the Jets could be staring at next. If the roster stays thin, ownership stays noisy, and you are firing a coach after one year, who is actually lining up to take that job? The discussion hits the Browns and Cardinals as warnings, debates the real risk of moving on from Aaron Glenn too fast, and questions whether the “best and brightest” would even want the Jets. Then the segment shifts into a bigger conversation about hypocrisy and how fans react differently depending on the name, the talent level, and the stakes. It turns into a blunt talk about outrage, perspective, and why sports media can't just repeat the same point every minute of every show. Finally, the whole thing takes a left turn into weekend stories, including a Rascal Flatts concert, “Evan seats” as the perfect concert hack, and an Albany surprise with an International Wrestling Hall of Fame sighting, capped off with Royal Rumble predictions and a reminder that the wrestling savant era might be here.
Evan and Tiki start Hour 2 with a stat that confirms what everyone's been feeling: the NFL playoffs have been called way looser, with penalties, false starts, and especially holding dropping hard compared to the regular season. They debate whether it's better teams, better discipline, or a league-wide “let them play” emphasis, plus the one-off moments that still ruin it for everyone. From there, the show pivots back to New York, starting with calls on the Yankees and the bigger question of what fans even expected this offseason. The conversation turns into a Monday morning quarterback exercise, including the idea that the one move that could have changed everything was adding a true lockdown bullpen arm. They also hit the ongoing concern: too many “ifs” across the roster, and whether the bullpen is the biggest risk heading into 2026. Then the hour goes full New York chaos: a date-night detour about Rascal Flatts, a quick Mets roster chemistry question, and a deep dive into the real Giannis conversation, not just “can he play,” but can he handle New York. The guys replay Giannis' famous “failure” press conference exchange and ask the only question that matters if he becomes a Knick: will that mindset survive a brutal city after a playoff loss? Calls roll in on what “the core” even means, which players are truly untouchable, and whether New York fans will ever accept anything but championship or bust.
On this episode of Chrisley Confessions 2.0, Todd Chrisley welcomes his longtime friend and country music icon Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts for a conversation that feels more like two neighbors catching up on the porch than a formal interview. The laughs start immediately with Todd's very “Todd” introduction, and from there the stories don't stop.Jay opens up about life on the road again, what it's been like returning to touring after the world hit pause, and why being behind the scenes now at Red Street Records has given him a whole new perspective on the music business. Todd, of course, keeps things lively with reflections on friendship, family, and what really matters when the spotlight fades and real life steps in.Between talk of viral moments, proud dad updates, and their shared appreciation for low-maintenance friendships, the episode weaves humor with surprisingly heartfelt moments. The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
What if the songs that still feel new are actually twenty years old? We kick off with a nostalgia gut-punch as Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, early Taylor Swift, and more hit the 20-year mark—then use that time warp to ask what truly lasts in music. From there, we swing into a high-energy news sweep: Zach Brown's album debuting at No.1 across all genres, Ella Langley's record-setting run on UK country airplay, leadership changes at the CMA, and a wave of new releases that balance story-first songwriting with cinematic promos. The heart of the show is a listener-fueled 80s showdown. Names fly—George Strait, Reba, Randy Travis, Journey, Queen, U2, Depeche Mode—and we unpack why Michael Jackson's studio innovation, Quincy Jones' production, and Toto's session muscle still shape how pop and rock are made. Along the way, we break down what makes today's country hooks stick, from Ella Langley's vocal scoops to Riley Green's easy swing, and count down the current charts with sharp, no-fluff commentary on what's climbing and why.We also open the hood on career arcs. Our “Where Are They Now?” segment revisits Gretchen Wilson, Easton Corbin, The Band Perry, and others to reveal how radio trends, label friction, burnout, and smart pivots steer longevity. The mailbag gets practical: labels act like banks and networks; independence is freedom plus workload; inputs beat vanity metrics. Measure what you control—releases, gigs, writing sessions—and let the audience decide what endures. Stick around to hear about our Podfest weekend, meet a few friends of the show, and grab a handful of behind-the-scenes gems that keep the community tight.Episode LinksVaughn Rhea: https://jayfranze.com/episode1/Garrett Landers: https://jayfranze.com/episode66/Avery Glenn Crabtree: https://jayfranze.com/episode77/Dalila Mya: https://jayfranze.com/episode102/Mark Badolato: https://jayfranze.com/episode140/Stephanie Rabus: https://jayfranze.com/episode149/Send us a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Contact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Services: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Books: https://jayfranze.com/books/ Merchandise Merchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/ Support Support: https://jayfranze.com/support/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/

She wore a Lightning McQueen t-shirt and told the band she loved them in the Hannah Montana Movie. She posted about it on TikTok and Gary Levox commented on it. Joey once accidentally drove through a neighbor's yard and drove away, but his mom made him walk over there and admit what he did. Nancy stole a paper envelope from a store when she was 5 and her mom made her return it and apologize. It’s Nancy’s birthday and she asked Joey to serenade her. He played his piano and sang “Happy Birthday” to her. Lucky 7 for $50 to Pinchy’s Joey keeps track of how much money his kids owe him. Is it really going to snow? All of the roads around East TN have been treated. Joey realized that’s why his car got dirty. A man in Florida got a DUI for being passed out drunk on a golf cart with the key in the ignition. We were curious how someone could be charged if they weren’t actually driving. The law says that if you’re in the vehicle and the keys are with you, you are “in control” of the vehicle (including golf carts). Hot Tea: The writers of Stranger Things are accused of using Reddit and ChatGPT to write the last season of the show. Dolly Parton is releasing a re-record of one of her songs, and it will feature artists like Lainey Wilson, Miley Cyrus, and Queen Latifah. Proceeds will benefit the children’s hospital in Vanderbilt. The bear that lived in a man’s basement for months has now moved into a neighbor’s crawlspace. “Choppelganger” is a new term used by Gen Z. It combines “doppelganger” with “chopped,” which basically means ugly. So, the word itself refers to people who look like the uglier version of someone else. Join your host Buzz Knight on the Takin A Walk replay episode with one of the most respected folks in the Nashville Music Scene. Jay DeMarcus shares his vast career in this episode, from his beginnings in Columbus Ohio, to his success with the legendary band Rascal Flatts. He also created and is CEO of independent label Red Street Records. Stanley Wayne “Jay” DeMarcus Jr. stands as one of country music’s most influential figures, not just for his role as a founding member of Rascal Flatts, but for his remarkable versatility as a musician, producer, and songwriter. Born on April 26, 1971, in Columbus, Ohio, DeMarcus discovered his musical calling early, immersing himself in piano, keyboards, and vocals throughout his childhood. DeMarcus’s journey to country music stardom began in his formative years, shaped by his Pentecostal upbringing and the gospel music that filled his church. This spiritual foundation would later inform the emotional depth and harmony-rich sound that became Rascal Flatts’ signature. After honing his skills in various musical settings, DeMarcus moved to Nashville in the 1990s, where he initially worked as a session musician and touring member for artists like Chely Wright and Michael English. The pivotal moment in DeMarcus’s career came in 1999 when he joined forces with his second cousin Gary LeVox and guitarist Joe Don Rooney to form Rascal Flatts. As the group’s bassist, keyboardist, and harmony vocalist, DeMarcus became the musical architect behind their polished, contemporary sound. His production sensibilities and instrumental prowess helped craft a string of unprecedented hits that redefined modern country music. Songs like “Bless the Broken Road,” “What Hurts the Most,” and “My Wish” showcased his ability to blend traditional country storytelling with pop-influenced arrangements and soaring vocal harmonies. Beyond his work with Rascal Flatts, DeMarcus established himself as a sought-after producer, working with artists including Chicago, James Otto, and Jo Dee Messina. His production style—characterized by lush instrumentation, meticulous attention to vocal arrangements, and radio-friendly polish—influenced a generation of country artists and producers. DeMarcus’s contributions to music have earned numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, and Country Music Association Awards. Rascal Flatts became one of the best-selling country groups of all time, selling over 23 million albums and 35 million digital downloads. The group’s consistent chart success throughout the 2000s and 2010s cemented their status as country music royalty. In his personal life, DeMarcus married Allison Alderson in 2004, with whom he shares two children. His family life occasionally intersected with his professional world, particularly through appearances on reality television and various media projects. The couple’s relationship became publicly documented through their participation in various entertainment ventures. Following Rascal Flatts’ farewell tour announcement in 2020—later postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic—DeMarcus continued pursuing solo production work and exploring new creative ventures. His legacy extends far beyond his instrumental and vocal contributions; he helped shape the sound of 21st-century country music, proving that traditional country could successfully merge with contemporary production techniques while maintaining emotional authenticity. Jay DeMarcus remains a testament to the power of musical craftsmanship, demonstrating that technical excellence, combined with genuine artistry and commercial sensibility, can create timeless music that resonates across generations.
