I've got Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff of Lettuce on the show this week, and he's bringing the heavy funk vibes to Roadcase!! Constantly evolving and exploring new boundaries, Lettuce has been at the forefront of funk both in the jam world and in more traditional lanes. Their newly released latest album, Lettuce with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, is a stunning representation of the melding of classical instrumentation with the funky grooves that Lettuce inhabits, and it's a potent mixture. Shmeeans is a chill dude with a vibe that is one of a super cool funk player, but is just as down-to-earth as it gets. He talks to me about coming up at Berklee School of Music where he met his future bandmates, and we talk about the atypical path of ascendance that Lettuce took to get to where he is today. This is a great conversation and I'm thrilled to have Shmeeans on the Pod!! What makes New Orleans funk hit so different? In this episode, we dive into the swampy funk of The Meters, the iconic quartet that's left its mark on everything from Wu-Tang to Whitney Houston and beyond. We break down Leo Nocentelli's chicken-scratch guitar, Art Neville's genius riff comping, Zigaboo's “direct assault” on the high hat, and the thumping George Porter Jr. bass lines that defined their unique sound. And we explore how NOLA production legend Allen Toussaint provided the perfect roux to cook up The Meters' musical gumbo — simple yet complex, country yet urban, and 100% groovin'! Tune in for stories of Adam's funky DVD menu discoveries, Peter's Snug Harbor gig with Meters' royalty, and how the culture of the crescent city produced what may be the greatest funk band of all time.Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1BqPtMqKaAiYlLvzplNDwOTry OS Membership today! → https://osjazz.link/aboutAll about YHIhttps://lnk.to/youllhearitYB

Today on the podcast is Nick Gargano! The Tale of Two Nicks, I guess you could say. Nick is a senior out of Sehome High School in Bellingham, Washington. I had a lot of fun chatting with Nick today. He's a super humble guy, also very thoughtful and he has one of the most remarkable progressions that I have seen in high school. A while back I had my teammate Sam Kurtz on the show. He ran 26 minutes his freshman year and now runs 18 as a senior. Nick ran 19:25 as a freshman and now is a 15:11 guy, so huge progression for him. Today, I ask all about his progression, how injuries plagued him his freshman year and how he was able to work through them physically and mentally to be a runner up at state and running 15:11. I won't reveal too much, but the team culture aspect is something that is very much highlighted a lot in our conversation today. Nick is also committed to run at the Gonzaga next fall under the legendary Pat Tyson. He holds PRs of: Cross Country 5K: 15:11 3200 Meters: 9:22 1600 Meters: 4:23Please, wherever you are, in your car, at work, on a run, give this podcast a follow and a five-star review on whatever platform you are listening on. That goes a long way in supporting the growth of The Sunday Shakeout so that I can keeping bringing to you some of the greatest stories in the sport of running and in that process, share love and passion for track and field and distance running.Without further delay, please enjoy my conversation with Nick Gargano.

One of the most haunting moments in director Mstyslav Chernov's harrowing new documentary “2000 Meters to Andriivka” — a follow up to his Oscar-winning “20 Days in Mariupol” — is a rather prosaic conversation about handmade cigarettes between the filmmaker and a Ukrainian soldier as they huddle in a foxhole while artillery shells explode around them. What makes this scene so chilling is its very ordinariness, and the fact that, by the end of the conversation, we will learn from the director's voice over that this soldier will be killed on another battlefield several months later. Joining Ken for a live, in-person interview at Sundance 2025 just after the film's world premiere, Mstyslav shares his experience of embedding with soldiers in Ukraine's 3rd Assault Brigade as they set out, on one long day during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the summer of 2023, to plant the Ukrainian flag in the recently recaptured village of Andriivka, Running alongside this saga is the story, told through footage recorded by the Ukrainian soldiers' helmet-mounted cameras, of how these brave soldiers fought one meter at a time to reclaim Andriivka. By the end of “2000 Meters,” it's clear that there's nothing left to save of the village except its name. How Andriivka — and those who died along the way — will be remembered is but one of the lingering questions that this unforgettable film dares to ask. Mstyslav Chernov was awarded the Jury Award for Directing, World Cinema Documentary, at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Brad Rourke, President and CEO of Scottie Resources (TSX.V:SCOT – OTCQB:SCTSF), joins me to review the final batch of high-grade gold assay results at the Blueberry Contact Zone from last year's 10,270 meter drill program at the Scottie Gold Mine Project, located in the Golden Triangle of British Columbia. We also discuss the larger Company strategy of consolidating much of the prior drilling to date along with this year's drilling all building towards a Maiden Resource Estimate that is targeted to be out to the market next month. Blueberry Contact drillhole SR24-357 intersected 7.00 grams per tonne (g/t) gold over 14.40 m including 47.40 g/t gold over 2.00 m at the Fifi vein zone. Blueberry Contact drillhole SR24-359 intersected 14.66 g/t gold over 4.00 m including 52.60 g/t gold over 1.00 m at the Road vein zone, and 4.81 g/t gold over 8.00 m including 10.83 g/t gold over 3.00 m at the at the BB vein zone. The hole also intercepted 35.0 g/t gold over 1.00 m on the Fifi vein zone. Blueberry Contact drillhole SR24-358 intersected 12.40 g/t gold over 1.00 m at the Lemoffe vein zone. Brad outlines that now with all the drilling data back from last year's exploration program, that they can work on finalizing the Maiden Resource Estimate. Their team internally anticipates somewhere around a million ounces of gold for this first resource estimate, but it will depend on what comes back from the 3rd parties creating the study. Additionally we discussion that there are still results from multiple veins and around the Blueberry Contact Zone and the Scottie Gold Mine area, along with the C and D Veins, the Golden Buckle Zone, and the Domino area that are not going to be included in this initial resource, because they still need more drilling density. This means there is still definite upside to the mineralized inventory beyond what will show up in the first pass resource report, and those growing areas will be the focus of future drill programs. The strategy at present is simply to get out a study on the lowest hanging fruit for the resources thus far, and then wrap some earlier stage economics around the project with a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) later in the year. If you have any questions for Brad regarding Scottie Resources, then please email them in to us at Fleck@kereport.com or Shad@kereport.com. In full disclosure, Shad is a shareholder of Scottie Resources at the time of this recording, but may choose to buy or sell any stock at any point in time. John Miniotis, President and CEO and David O'Connor, Chief Geologist of AbraSilver Resource Corp (TSX.V:ABRA – OTCQX:ABBRF), join me to review the next batch of drill assays returned from the ongoing 20,000 meter Phase 4 diamond drill campaign on their wholly-owned Diablillos property in Salta Province, Argentina. These assay results we review are from four initial reconnaissance drill holes at the porphyry complex, located approximately 3.5 km northeast of the Oculto deposit. Results indicate that drilling has tested the upper part of a major porphyry system that is estimated to span up to approximately 3 km in length and 2 km in width, hosting zones of gold, silver and copper, including some high-grade intervals. The porphyry mineralization appears to have a high-grade gold epithermal overprint. Dave takes us through the key takeaways from the initial reconnaissance drilling at the Cerro Viejo target in the Diablillos porphyry complex. This included three holes confirming widespread gold mineralization; most notably drill hole DDH 24-056, which intersected 36.0 m at 1.91 g/t Au, starting at a downhole depth of only 87 m, with a higher-grade interval of 5.0 m at 7.22 g/t Au. This intercept highlights a shallow, high-grade gold zone easily accessible for future exploration. Dill holes DDH 24-059 and DDH 24-071, both intersected broad zones of gold, silver, and copper porphyry-style mineralization. The drilling at the Cerro Blanco target was limited to one hole, DDH 24-081, which was not ideally positioned and intercepted only short intervals of gold and copper mineralization. However, historical and recent surface sampling revealed high-grade zones with copper-rich intervals, offering promising targets for future exploration. Next John outlined the ongoing Phase IV drill program at both JAC and Occulto, which is focused on expanding the existing Diablillos Mineral Resource estimate across the broader Diablillos land package. The Company has two drill rigs operating and, to date, has completed approximately 19,000 m of drilling in 96 holes, and with drill likely turning for another month into February, it will likely end up being more than the 20,000 meters initially planned. Several assay results are awaited from the lab and will be released on an ongoing basis pending review. This data from the Phase 4 drilling will feed into an updated Resource Estimate later this year as the next key milestone. Additionally, the upcoming resource estimate in 2025 will feed into the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), which will be managed by a team of experienced engineers and consultants, supported by the Company's technical team. The Company will undergo a competitive tendering process to select qualified Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management firms, with the award anticipated by no later than April 2025. Regular progress updates will be provided by the Company as the DFS advances forward for release in 2026, with results expected to further showcase the Company's potential to become a key low-cost silver-gold producer. If you have any follow up questions for John or Dave regarding at AbraSilver, then please email me at Shad@kereport.com. Brad Rourke, President and CEO of Scottie Resources (TSX.V:SCOT – OTCQB:SCTSF), joins us to review the recent assay results at the Blueberry Contact Zone and around the Scottie Gold Mine area, from this year's 10,000 meter drill program located in the Golden Triangle of British Columbia. We also discuss the larger Company strategy of consolidating much of the prior drilling to date along with this year's drilling all building towards a Maiden Resource Estimate that is targeted to be out by the end of Q1. We start off noting that the Blueberry Contact drillhole SR24-355 intersected 59.2 grams per tonne (g/t) gold over 2.50 meters (m) at the Fifi vein zone. Then Blueberry Contact drillhole SR24-356 intersected 35.2 g/t gold over 2.00 m at the Lemoffe vein zone, and 2.27 g/t gold over 8.60 m at the at the Fifi vein zone. These high-grade gold intercepts over mineable widths helped fill in remaining gaps in mineralized data and will support the calculation of Scottie's maiden resource estimate for the Scottie Gold Mine Project. Next we discussed more recent drill intercepts from Scottie Gold Mine area, where drillhole SR24-345 intersected 20.2 (g/t) gold over 2.60 (m) at the O Zone, and where drillhole SR24-339 intersected 9.50 g/t gold over 3.00 m at the M Zone, and 4.50 g/t gold over 4.00 m at the N Zone, including 16.7 g/t gold over 1.00 m. These O Zone, M Zone, and N Zone results will also factor into the upcoming Maiden Resource Estimate. Brad points out that they anticipate around a million ounces of gold in their first resource estimate, but that there are still results from multiple veins and around the Blueberry Contact Zone and the Scottie Gold Mine area, along with the C and D Veins, the Golden Buckle Zone, and the Domino area that are not going to be included in the resource, because they still need more drilling density. This means there is definite upside to the mineralized inventory beyond what will show up in the first pass resource report, and those growing areas will be the focus of future drill programs. The strategy is simply to get out a study on the lowest hanging fruit for the resources thus far, and then wrap some earlier stage economics around the project with a Preliminary Economic Assessment later in the year. If you have any questions for Brad regarding Scottie Resources, then please email them in to us at Fleck@kereport.com or Shad@kereport.com. Roger Rosmus, Founder, CEO, & Director of Goliath Resources (TSX.V: GOT) (OTCQB: GOTRF), joins me to review the latest batch of 4 more high-grade gold assay results returned from the Surebet and Bonanza Zones at the Surebet Discovery in the Golden Triangle of British Columbia. GD-24-260 intercepted the highest concentration of visible gold and its best high-grade gold drill hole to date at the Surebet Discovery from the Bonanza High-Grade Gold Zone that sits ~200 meters above the valley floor level. Bonanza Zone: 34.52 g/t AuEq (34.47 Au and 3.96 Ag) over 39.00 meters, including 132.93 g/t AuEq (132.78 Au and 12.98 Ag) over 10.00 meters, and 166.04 g/t AuEq (165.84 Au and 16.07 Ag) over 8.00 meters. Surebet Zone: 5.51 g/t AuEq (5.39 g/t Au and 9.82 g/t Ag) over 3.40 meters within 2.96 g/t AuEq (2.89 g/t Au and 5.46 g/t Ag) over 6.35 meters. GD-24-275 intercepted two separate stacked veins of high-grade gold, silver and base metals corresponding to the Surebet and Bonanza Zones characterized by sulphide rich quartz breccia; both remain wide open: Surebet Zone: 5.00 g/t AuEq (4.88 g/t Au and 9.94 g/t Ag) over 6.00 meters, including 6.67 g/t AuEq (6.60 g/t Au and 13.07 g/t Ag) over 4.42 meters. Bonanza Zone: 12.01 g/t AuEq (11.70 g/t Au and 25.66 g/t Ag) over 11.00 meters including 16.48 g/t AuEq (16.05 g/t Au and 35.03 g/t Ag) over 8.00 meters. Drill holes GD-24-252 and GD-24-242 also incepted high-grade gold mineralization over mineable widths in the Surebet, Bonanza, and Golden Gate zones. We discuss what the team is learning by continuing to expand both areas, of high-grade mineralization, the importance of the mineable average widths and grades, and that the 2024 drill program has essentially doubled the mineralized area of the Bonanza High-Grade Gold Zone from an area 180,000 m2 (720 x 612 x 410 meter triangular area) to 341,000 m2 (835 x 685 x 612 x 410 meter polygon area) that remains wide open. Assays are still pending on 89 of 105 holes (85%): 50 drilled in 2024 (42 have visible and/or abundant visible gold including coarse-grained visible gold), 13 drilled into the Reduced Intrusive Dykes 2021-2023 (6 have visible and/or abundant visible gold), 14 relogged shoulders 2021 – 2023 (3 have visible and/or abundant visible gold) and 12 drilled into volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) style mineralization at our newly discovered Treasure Island, 40 km to the north of the Surebet system. If you have any questions for Roger about Goliath Resources, then please email me at Shad@kereport.com and then we'll get those answered or covered in a future interviews. Louisiana Creole Peoplehood is the book they collaborated on. “Over the course of more than three centuries, the diverse communities of Louisiana have engaged in creative living practices to forge a vibrant, multifaceted, and fully developed Creole culture. Against the backdrop of ongoing anti-Blackness and Indigenous erasure that has sought to undermine this rich culture, Louisiana Creoles have found transformative ways to uphold solidarity, kinship, and continuity, retaking Louisiana Creole agency as a post-contact Afro-Indigenous culture. Engaging themes as varied as foodways, queer identity, health, historical trauma, language revitalization, and diaspora, Louisiana Creole Peoplehood explores vital ways a specific Afro-Indigenous community asserts agency while promoting cultural sustainability, communal dialogue, and community reciprocity.” Rain works within Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous Studies — literature; ecology; gender, two-spirit, and sexuality; Métis; Louisiana Creole; Red/Black Rhetorics; and critical mixed race. By highlighting cost savings, clients can see how efficient water treatment impacts their bottom line. Sustainability isn't just a trendy term—it's about implementing practical practices that protect our planet for current and future generations. By adopting sustainable strategies, we can conserve resources, cut costs, and create lasting benefits for both the environment and our client's businesses. In our latest episode of the Scaling UP! H2O Podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with James Courtney, CWT, LEED AP of CSC Technologies an advocate for water sustainability, who shared actionable insights on how water professionals can effectively embrace sustainability while adding value to their clients. Meet James Courtney: A Champion for Sustainability In our enlightening conversation, James shared his journey in the water industry and emphasized the vital role that water professionals play in promoting sustainability. He stated, "We help our customers by saving them money on water, electricity, and fuel." This highlights how our work not only benefits the environment but also leads to significant financial savings for our clients. Sustainability: More Than Just a Buzzword Sustainability means optimizing our resources. As James noted, "We operate in this space where we are directly responsible for the sustainability of our customers.” Water treaters have a unique opportunity to minimize their clients' carbon footprints while improving efficiency. Whether it's running boilers without scale, optimizing cooling towers, or maximizing cycles of conductivity, every action contributes to a greener future. James also cautioned against greenwashing, reminding us that not all practices labeled as "green" deliver real benefits. We must be vigilant and ensure that our sustainability efforts Educating and Empowering Clients Understanding water and energy usage is essential for effective water management. James encourages water professionals to educate their clients about their consumption patterns. “Clients often don't realize that overusing chemicals or wasting water is a problem,” he explained. By illustrating the cost savings—like reducing their electricity bills or fuel costs—clients can connect the dots between efficient water treatment and their bottom line. Harnessing Data One of James's most compelling stories was about using smart meters to identify inefficiencies. He shared, “Meters give you information; information gives you the opportunity to find solutions to problems you didn't even know you had.” In one instance, a client's building was using half a million gallons of water due to a blocked condensate receiver. The installation of a meter enabled the team to identify the issue and prevent unnecessary water loss, ultimately leading to significant cost savings for the client. James's team also tackled a fascinating case with two identical LEED Platinum buildings. Even though they were built exactly the same, one consumed significantly more power. By analyzing minute-by-minute energy data, they pinpointed the problem, leading to solutions that not only enhanced efficiency but also inspired other buildings in the community to adopt similar practices. The Impact of Visibility James highlighted an intriguing study involving a housing development where identical homes were built. In half of these homes, energy meters were placed indoors, allowing residents to see their energy usage, while the other half had meters located outdoors. The results were striking: “The houses with visible indoor meters used less energy simply because people could see it,” James explained. Residents began to turn energy monitoring into a game, challenging themselves to reduce their consumption. This simple shift towards visibility in daily energy use not only heightened awareness among residents but also nurtured a culture of energy-saving habits. As James aptly put it, “What gets measured gets managed.” Engaging clients in enjoyable and measurable ways can significantly drive sustainability efforts. Final Thoughts James's insights remind us of the significant role water professionals play in fostering a sustainable future. By leveraging data and educating our clients, we can create meaningful change that benefits both our communities and the environment. Together, let's continue to explore the importance of sustainability practices that protect our generation and the ones to come. Thank you for being part of the Scaling UP! H2O community. There are a few trains of thought on control ranges. Which tests and readings really need a control range applied to them? How wide or narrow should the control range be? It's something one should consider carefully. I have seen control ranges applied to every test parameter for a makeup, such as city water, that the user had absolutely no control over. Are these control ranges really necessary? Sometimes, they are, especially if the makeup source is susceptible to changes in water quality, such as total hardness, which can impact downstream softener performance. I've also seen control ranges so large a bus could slide through them sideways. What good is such a wide control range doing for the water system? Nothing was actually being controlled. I've seen control ranges that were so unreasonably narrow that the parameters were almost ALWAYS out of range as well. What good does that serve? Is a better control system needed to meet these narrow ranges or is a wider control range more fitting instead? A lot of you out there use field service report programs that turn red, green, and sometimes yellow when a parameter is outside the control range. Not having good and proper control ranges can make that field service report's color coding nearly useless because it is always too red or even too green and not actually reflecting the true stressed or controlled state of the system. Control ranges that are too tight may yield field service reports that are red all the time, which will lead to either the end user ignoring the colors or being annoyed by the report always looking red. Control ranges that are too broad may not show the true state of stress the system is under and lead to more problems down the road. Lastly, I've even seen reps be pressured by their customers to avoid red color coding as much as possible, leading to either uselessly wide control ranges or no control ranges at all. This can be a touchy subject, but your control ranges must be meaningful and useful. It may take some finesse to get everyone on the same side of the table on this but seeing a little red when appropriate TODAY beats dealing with the impact of a failed water system and wasted energy and water TOMORROW.
