Fight Oligarchy rallies are setting attendance records in swing states and Republican-controlled Congressional districts across the country. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Texas Congressman Greg Casar ... and Calexico rocked the house in Tucson on May 22, 2025.Event organizers estimated 3000 for the Tucson rally at Catalina High School. The Midtown neighborhood association warned residents that as many as 7000 people may attend the March 22, 2025 rally. More that 23,000 people filled the football field and bleachers. The beginning of the program was delayed because so many people were still in line, and still streaming in as AOC began to speak. The lines snaked around the neighborhood, and eventually everyone got in. Show Notes: Jung Park, a Korean immigrant, faced a conflict between her passion for acting and her academic pursuits. She initially wanted to concentrate in visual arts but ultimately chose English and American Literature and Language, which she loved. Despite this, she was conflicted about pursuing his artistic dreams versus what was expected of her. Joining AFTRA and Going into Law School In her junior year, she auditioned for an open call search for an ABC after-school special about kids with HIV and AIDS, which led to her joining the Screen Actors Guild, renowned as "SAG-AFTRA." After a year in Boston, she returned to California and had to choose between continuing acting, moving to LA, or going to law school. She auditioned for a talent agency in San Diego and was accepted into law school. A Stand-up Comedian at Law School While in law school, Jung began doing stand-up comedy in Sacramento and moved to San Francisco, working in law firms and doing stand-up comedy at night. She eventually opened her own law firm in San Francisco and took on numerous cases, including helping a Vietnamese woman avoid deportation for a felony she committed. Jung had wonderful mentors in law, including 70-year-old white men in plaintiff-side civil litigation. She turned down a position at a major law firm after being nominated for the American Ends of Court, which was a group of old white lawyers. Instead, she auditioned and got into a traveling theater program with Kaiser Permanente, which offered health insurance for actors. Pursuing Acting and Leaving Law Jung began her acting career in high schools, continuation schools, and juvenile detention centers, performing educational theater shows and counseling Q&As. She later moved to Southern California and focused on stand-up, sketch, and improv. She joined the La Troupe improv training program and worked at a plaintiff side civil litigation law office, where she worked on behalf of farm workers and other vulnerable individuals. In 2012, she grew tired of being a lawyer and opened a Speech and Debate Academy in Pasadena, California. The academy focuses on helping kids be empowered and find their voice. The academy has been around for 13 years and has participated in the Harvard speech and debate tournament. The pandemic hit, and Jung found fulfillment in coaching speech and running her business. She joined an acting class before the pandemic and enjoyed hobnobbing for coffee afterwards. However, during the pandemic, her teacher encouraged her students to start TikTok accounts and post videos related to their work. She had a sketch idea developed in their sketch writing class, which was set up as a GPS that tells driving directions with the Korean accent. A Career Shift to Screenwriting Jung is now focusing on writing scripts and developing her content to elevate her unique voice. She has also joined Harvardwood, an organization of Harvard alums in the Hollywood industry, where she took a writing class and attended webinars. She is currently getting a director certificate through UCLA Extension and working on a couple of silly short films. One of her projects is a magical realism short story about an old Asian Tiger Mom visited by a mysterious pigeon. She plans to rewrite it as a short film script and act in it herself, as she can do the pigeon well. She is also considering renting out pigeons for TV or film to see how they move and what they could do. Jung grew up in the Mexican border town of Calexico, near Yuma. She talks about the transition to Harvard and experiencing culture shock. Her stand-up comedy often deals with her experiences growing up in a Mexican American border town and feeling more Latina than Korean. She talks about her family and how her father's paranoia fueled a lot of jokes. She enjoyed her stand-up and has been considering writing new material or trying it out on America's Got Talent. Her last performance was a staged play reading for a Jewish Arts Council group in San Santa Barbara, which was a fundraiser. Influential Harvard Professors and Courses Jung, a self-professed word nerd, was accepted into a special graduate seminar led by Phil Fisher, the head of the English department. The seminar focused on close reading of novels, a subject Park was deeply interested in. Fisher warned that few undergrads would be accepted, and Jung was accepted into the seminar, which she found to be a valuable learning experience. The seminar helped her understand the meanings of the first few pages of a novel and the larger work. She has since used this knowledge to teach English classes and writing skills to students, demonstrating the importance of close reading and analysis in academic pursuits. THIS IS NOT AN ENDOSEMENT. My guest today is a wife, a mother, a grandmother, an educator, life long Calexican and now candidate for Calexico City Council. Although she does not consider herself a politician she decided to throw her name in for Calexico City Council because she was tired of seeing the same people get elected and nothing gets done to better Calexico and yet thing keep getting worse and worse. Her passing for sharing the same life experiences she lived growing up in Calexico with her kids and grandkids is what drives her to get involved in what she called this circus that Calexico politics has turned into. Today I had the please of talking to owner and chef at Ursa, chef Aaron Lopez. We talked about what it was like growing up in Calexico and how food was never something he envisioned himself doing as a career but at the same time his artist side has helped him be creative in the kitchen as well. Aaron left Calexico pretty much right after high school and spent the last 20 years working in Los Angeles, Hawaii and Austin working in fine dinning restaurants. During his stay in Austin he and his wife had some time to travel and they spent it exploring the Southwest and this is where Ursa became an idea that 5 years later became a thing. Storytelling in song is not new. It's mankind's way of conveying, in both accuracy and reflection, the narrative from one perspective. Embellishments and hooks have long been the best way to make the story easy to digest and, if need be, to get a point (likely sociopolitical) across. We'll be doing just that in this Friday's episode: stories based in war, natural disasters, national tragedies and personal conflict. We'll take a hundred year tour of storytelling from Bessie Smith to the Drive-by Truckers, from Memphis Minnie and The Tex-I-An Boys to Calexico, The Staple Singers and Marty Robbins. There are floods, murders, environmental catastrophes, bombings, and some wartime solemnity to be shared today. Tune into KOWS Community Radio every Friday morning for some fresh musical linens, curated by the outdoors and streaming to all of planet Earth on KOWSFM.COM/listen

This week we dive into the many lives and evolving music of much-respected singer and troubadour Peter One. Coming from humble beginnings in his native Ivory Coast, One became a folk hero for creating a new type of African roots music that was the backdrop for Nelson Mandela's fight against apartheid and gained him a following around the globe. His partnership with longtime friend Jess Sah Bi created the 1985 classic (and newly reissued) Our Garden Needs Its Flowers and at their height, saw them playing stadiums across West Africa. The two mates from Abidjan were equally inspired by Ivorian village songs as Simon and Garfunkel, Dolly Parton and American soul titans like Otis Redding - creating a unique fusion while singing in French, English and Gouro (a Mande language). Escaping the unrest of his home country where he was a history teacher, One finally came to the United States and worked as a nurse for years before diving back into his original passion for music. At the age of 67, last year One put out his heralded return LP Come Back To Me on Verve Forecast, featuring the golden-voiced harmonies and Ivorian country-folk songs he does best, with new forays into blues, French love songs and more - featuring his old partner Jess Sah Bi and new collaborators like Allison Russell. Co-produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, John Prine) with contributions from members of Wilco and Calexico, the record shows that even as he nears seventy, One is only just getting started. Last year he even made his debut at the Grand Ole' Opry.
Years of Service: 1984-2017Mike began his law enforcement career with the Naval Intelligence Service (NIS, now known as NCIS). From there, Mike was hired by the DEA and began a long and storied career, and developed an expertise in Latin American drug trafficking. During this interview, Mike talks about working undercover in Mexico as well as his assignment to Operation Snowcap in South America where he located and destroyed clandestine airfields as well as Cocaine labs. During his career with DEA, Mike was stationed in San Diego; Calexico; Houston; La Paz, Bolivia; San Jose, Costa Rica; Guadalajara, Mexico; and Mexico City.
As per tradition (at least from days of yore when we did episodes weekly), we're using the week of Easter to add some more traditional Christmas music to our list. And it just so happens that both of this episode's songs are from the same album, 2012's Holidays Rule! Both songs were also composed by guys named Henry who were better known for other things, which I guess is also kind of a fun coincidence? Calexico's take on King Henry VIII's "Green Grows the Holly" is a breath of fresh air, but Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" as performed by The Civil Wars is just kinda... air. This week's ranking music is "The Holly and the Ivy" performed by Los Campesinos!
If you grew up in the 90's and early 2000's here in Calexico you probably remember the name TacoMex. The Arellano's and their food have been a staple in our community since 1992 when they first opened TacoMex. For most people who are in the restaurant business they know that owning a restaurant is a family affair and most of the time the younger members of the family end up hating it and don't see it as a future career, but not for Martin Arellano Jr. After being away for a while and running 3 successful food trucks in the San Antonio area he's come back to help his parents with Birria Red but only with one condition, if they let him bring back TacoMex to life and after having a successful soft open this past weekend the future looks bright for this new TacoMex era! Mark Windt, born in Cleveland, later a resident of Holland, and now back in Ohio, performs under the name Kramies. Have you heard of him? We hadn't. But Patrick Carney of the Black Keys has. So has Jason Lytle of Grandaddy. Kramies has performed with Spiritualized, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico, and currently is on tour with Tyler Ramsey of Band Of Horses. In this episode, Bob and Nick visit with Kramies, learn about his interesting career and listen to some of his evocative dream pop. And we discuss the current weirdness of the music business, how difficult and yet simultaneously easy it is to develop an audience, and get your music heard. Note: Kramies is also a very funny fellow, and this is a particularly interesting episode! Welcome to Friday, and we've got a heck of a show for you of local Detroit topics. 03:13 - Devon talks about why he needed to share some "hometown love" in a recent newspaper op-ed. 09:15 - An update on the new restaurant by Chef Fabio Viviani in the old Calexico space. Plus, do local restaurants need to up their game? Do you prefer when someone skips over a bad place, or tells you how bad it might be? Are some reviews too harsh? Would love your thoughts in this conversation. 313-789-3211 or dailydetroit - at - gmail - dot - com. 8:47 - With the news of Albena in the Siren Hotel closing, what do you think of Prix Fixe, or fixed price menus? This episode features a conversation with host, Rhonda Willers, and guest, Carmen Radley I met Carmen through the online writing community and newsletter, The Isolation Journals, where she serves as the managing editor and host of the monthly writing hour called The Hatch. The daughter of two preacher's kids, Pieta Brown's early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace, running water, or TV. There, she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, Greg Brown, the now beloved Midwestern folk singer. Later, while living with her mother in Birmingham, Alabama during her formative years, Pieta drew on and expanded these influences and began writing poems and composing instrumental songs on piano. By the time she left home at 18 she had lived in at least 19 different houses and apartments between Iowa and Alabama. In her early 20's, after experiencing what she describes as "the songs calling,” Pieta started experimenting with the banjo and eventually picked up a 1930's Maybell arch-top guitar during a visit to her father's place and never looked back. Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly 'bohemian' upbringing, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings soon after teaching herself how to play guitar. "I grew up around a lot of musicians and artists living on the fringe, and have always felt most at home among them," Pieta says.Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana's true gems. In recent years Pieta has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style, but also the power of her singing and songwriting, including fan favorite Paradise Outlaw (2014 Red House, which Bon Iver master mind, Justin Vernon, called his “favorite recording made at our studio.”) Pieta has toured North America with Mark Knopfler, and toured various regions of the U.S., Australia and Canada with John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani Difranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico among others. She has co-written songs with and made recent guest appearances on albums by Calexico, Amos Lee, and Iris Dement, whose latest masterpiece Workin' On A World (2023) Pieta co-produced. Pieta's songs and music have been heard in various TV Shows and indie films including Everything Will Be Fine (Wim Wenders). With the release of her most recent album Freeway (September 2019, Righteous Babe) co-produced by Bon Iver drummer, S. Carey, followed by multiple experimental collaborations since with various artists including JT Bates, S.Carey, and Howe Gelb & The Colorist Orchestra, as well as a new instrumental based side-project she calls Sylvee & The Sea, Pieta's music and artistry continue to rise.~ "...a style and a sensuality that's all her own...."- Pop Matters~ "Among the top tier of songwriters today..." - FAME (Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange)~ "...a gifted singer-songwriter whose lyrics are pieces of polished poetry" - Huffington PostPieta's WebsiteSRTN Website
It is National Coffee Day - so we put the call out for your favorite coffeeshops - and Jer and Devon talk about them! Including one in Ferndale that was far and away favorite over the others from the responses. Take a listen and discover some places others love you might not have been to try out. Also in an edition of "where we've been," we talk about a Chicago restaurant - Siena Tavern - where the celebrity chef behind it is opening up another similar concept in the old Calexico space in Detroit. Plus, a funk themed coffeeshop I visited that's just another example of how our culture spreads everywhere.
