The Art of Longevity

Valerie June's journey to what we might call ‘cult stardom' hasn't been easy. “I was cleaning houses while playing bars & clubs at night. And I had a vision that I would not make it - my music wouldn't reach its audience through regular means - it would reach its audience through musicians. My friends would help me. I'm a musician's musician”. Working through a talented community of musicians that has included Booker T Jones, Brandi Carlile and none other than Mavis Staples, eventually brought Valerie June together with her own audience. For her new project, June works with Blind Boys of Alabama, Norah Jones, DJ Cavem Moetavation and M Ward, supremo guitarist and producer of new album Owls, Omens and Oracles. I wanted to get her view of her own music, because the music business loves to put artists in lanes, boxes and pigeon holes. How on earth did an eclectic artist like June slip through the cracks? Her music has been described by others as an amalgam of soul, gospel, Appalachian folk, bluegrass, country, spiritual pop, African blues and my own favourite…cosmic rock. How does she describe her music in response to this assessment? With a joyful guffaw and an emphatic reaction: “I'm a singer-songwriter. I follow the songs, whatever they want to be is what I do. I'm kinda like their servant. All those names related to the music - I used to get attached to those and now I don't ”.In Jeff Tweedy's entertaining memoir World Within a Song, the author, singer songwriter and Wilco frontman says: “Taking something old and making it sound modern is nothing new”. And yet obsessing over your references, but melding them into something that is uniquely you is one of the key themes for artists of longevity. Both concepts are critical to June's work.“I do commune with the ancestors. I know I'm standing on the shoulders of many who came before me. I feel them beside me as I'm talking now. I'm not doing this by myself. I wanted to understand my people through music, and I got there through studying the blues”. Most songs come to me as voices. I'll try this instrument and be like “no, not that one…like Goldilocks. I try many different instruments to connect that voice to what it wants. Then, I found a team of people to listen to and understand”. If Valerie June really is the Goldilocks of songcraft, the results are indeed nourishing.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got an absolute legend of a singer-songwriter in conversation with a guy who's no slouch himself: Lucinda Williams and M. Ward. Williams has been writing and recording incredible songs since the late 1970s, though she didn't really break through in a huge way until 1998's stone classic Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, which garnered her the Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy—her second Grammy—but also some of the most well-deserved critical accolades of that year. She certainly didn't rest on those laurels, having released close to a dozen more revered albums since, many of which found themselves also at the Grammy and Americana awards ceremonies—as well as in the hearts of listeners and other songwriters. Last year, Williams released a fantastic memoir about her journey from small-town Louisiana to the music business and beyond. It's a lovely look at a life well lived called Don't Tell Anyone the Secrets I Told You. The other half of today's conversation is M. Ward, another literate singer-songwriter with a varied career whose music can't be easily pinned down—he's been called folk, Americana, and indie-rock, none of which quite do his songs justice. Ward has been making records for 25 years now, and his discography includes not only thoughtful, beautiful solo records, but an entire catalog of albums made with actress Zooey Deschanel under the name She & Him. Ward's latest is last year's Supernatural Thing, another set of songs that feel like they exist out of time. Check out “Too Young to Die” from that album right here. In this conversation, Ward and Williams talk about the time they worked together, when Williams contributed vocals to an M. Ward record back in 2009. Then they get into Williams' memoir and just scratch the surface on her incredible life and career before the conversation turns to their literary influences and more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:33 – Start of the chat 4:30 – Williams on the hard part of writing a memoir 8:13 – Ward reads his favorite passage from Williams' book 12:58 – Williams recalls meeting famous writers as a child 23:50 – "I want to be James Joyce!" Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Lucinda Williams and M. Ward for chatting. Supernatural Thing is a curious title for M.Ward's latest studio album, so we'll let him explain: “The title comes from an early thought as a kid that radio traveled the same airwaves as messages from supernatural things — and music, especially remembered music, is somehow tied up in this exchange,” says Ward.

This week on The Open Door (Oct. 19th) we explore two crises in higher education. The first is affordability for students. The second is federal interference in colleges and universities. But crises call for thoughtful responses. One such response is the development of Great Books colleges. Our special guest is Thomas M. Ward, a professor of philosophy at Baylor University. He is also the author of Divine Ideas (Cambridge, 2020) and John Duns Scotus on Parts, Wholes, and Hylomorphism (Brill, 2014). His most recent book is Ordered by Love: An Introduction to Duns Scotus (Angelico, 2022). Among the questions we'll ask Professor Ward are the following. As always, we encourage you to suggest others.1. Prof. Ward, Tom if we may, could you please tell us a bit about yourself and your family?2. What led you to philosophy and, in due time, to Baylor University?3. What are the key factors that make higher education so expensive?4. Can you identify for us some of the pros and cons of President Biden's debt forgiveness program? Is it equitable?5. How does an increasing federal subsidy of higher education pave the way to increasing federal control of what is taught? Why should both religious and secular institutions be alert to this connection?6. What is the Academic Freedom Alliance?7. Some mission-oriented institutions refuse federal aid and remain both free of government interference and simultaneously affordable. How have they managed to do so?8. How can families help resolve the crises caused by federal financing of higher education?9. How can students help resolve these same crises?10. Where do you see yourself, as a reformer and scholar, a decade from now?

Whether you're flooded with warm nostalgia at the first beat of Jingle Bells, or like Hanif didn't grow up with the holiday but are nonetheless enchanted by the aesthetics of it, this episode is for you. We've invited special guests Hrishikesh Hirway and the duo She & Him on the show to talk about Christmas standards, eggnog, and lay praise at the feet of Mariah Carey. Plus we hear from listeners from across the country who've called in to share their non-traditional Christmas traditions. For the Hanif and Hrishi's Christmas song bracket, running 12/18-12/23, head over to @objectofsound. Show Notes: She & Him's first Christmas album, A Very She & Him Christmas, is being re-released in special edition this year on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. Recently, he composed the soundtrack for The Red Lantern, a dog-sledding survival game from Epic Games. Mariah Carey announced “It's Time” for Christmas on Nov. 1, 2021. She has been welcoming the Christmas season this way for the past several years. Hrishikesh Hirway and Hanif Abdurraqib will be running their Christmas song bracket on Twitter (@nifmuhammad, @hrishihirway, @objectofsound). Hanif's holiday tradition usually involves watching the 2003 classic, Love Actually.  Credits:This show is produced by work by work: Scott Newman, Jemma Rose Brown, Kathleen Ottinger, Emily Shaw and by Hanif Abdurraqib. My guest today is Pierre de Reeder who spreads his time between making records as a commercial studio owner at 64 Sound and its affiliated production room facilities, inhabiting the occasional role as a solo artist or player in various projects, running his indie record label Little Record Company, and managing all things Rilo Kiley… a band for which he is both a founding member, as well as now having its two latest releases on his label. In recording things, he has worked with the likes of Mavis Staples, She & Him, M. Ward, Sia, Tim Heidecker (from Tim & Eric), Emitt Rhodes, Vampire Weekend, Ben Gibbard, Julian Casablancas, Bright Eyes, and much of his own and various bands.  And his studio, 64 Sound and its incarnations have hosted artists such as X, Devendra Banhart, My Morning Jacket, Amanda Palmer, Michael Kiwanuka, Tokyo Police Club, Bat For Lashes, Ty Segall, St. Vincent and Sleater-Kinney, Starcrawler, Warpaint, and many more.   Because of its very extensive collection of vintage recording gear, microphones and instruments (lifelong collections of Pierre and his studio partners Curt Anderson and Kingsize Soundlabs), as well as multiple analog tape formats and/or digital, 64 Sound, has become a highly coveted recording destination for bands and songwriters from around the country and globe who come to play and write on more than 50 vintage guitars, 40 vintage keyboards, synths and organs, multiple pianos and drums and effects and doodads galore. "I look up at your heavens, shaped by your fingers,At the moon and the stars you set firm—What are human beings that you spare a thought for them,Or the child of Adam that you care for him?"Psalm 8This psalm is surely not the only time we find a biblical author marveling at the mystery of man. Wondering as to what exactly the human person is, and why it is that God the Creator would pay us a moment's notice. And surely it isn't just the authors of Sacred Scripture that have expressed their perplexity when considering what it is that we are; philosophers, poets, stand-up comics, all have ruminated over what exactly we are, why it is that we are so like the other animals, yet how it is also the case that there are aspects of our nature that are radically beyond these other creatures. Addressing our nature, the Catechism of the Catholic Church phrases matters in this way:"The human person, created in the image of God, is a being at once corporeal and spiritual. . . . The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the 'form' of the body: i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living, human body; spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature." (Nos. 362 and 365)My guest today, on board to discuss all of this in expert fashion, is Thomas Ward. Tom is a professor of philosophy at Baylor University, and has degrees in Philosophy and Theology from UCLA and Oxford, respectively. His doctoral dissertation was written on the topic we discuss in this episode, namely, the thought of John Duns Scotus on the topic of hylomorphism, a conceptual framework that has informed much of Catholic thinking over the centuries on the nature of material reality, and the human being in particular. Tom's WebsiteDivine Ideas by Thomas M.
