A two time National Marathon Champion, taking the 2018 title at the Dublin Marathon and the 2021 title at the Belfast Marathon whilst also winning this race outright, he is no stranger to being crowned a National Champion. He has 11 national titles to his name, the most recent of these, his second at the 10k distance at the Great Ireland Run in March 2022. Hampered by a niggling injury over the past few years, the pandemic brought about an opportunity for Mick to step back and take time out to get the strains and at the time an unknown stress fracture healed. He is now getting back into his stride and is on track to being back at full tilt in time for this year's Dublin Marathon in October where he will aim to defend his National Marathon Championship title and go faster than his marathon PB of 2:13:19 set in Dublin in 2019. With a young son at home and new arrival due in July, Mick loves spending time outdoors with his family, with his running clients for whom he is a coach, or with his club mates on a run, or more likely competing against them in a race. The key to his success? Consistency in training, getting the balance right in terms of training, racing, lifestyle and having fun. Mick alongside his coach Dick Hooper work in partnership to deliver the results we consistently see Mick achieve and, although not every race has gone his way, when Mick Clohisey is on the start line of a race you know you are going to see some superb running and a great result.
“I've traveled all over the world to race in big events and sometimes it comes down to those simple things that motivate you and push you to be your best and create those memories and how I can be that to my daughter and other girls. Those things excite me and motivate me.” - Krista DuChene Krista DuChene is one of Canada's most decorated marathon runners with an impressive list of accomplishments that started back in 2010 when she first became the National Marathon Champion. In 2012, Krista and teammate Lanni Marchant both ran faster than the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Olympic standard in Rotterdam; however, neither athlete met the Canadian standard. While both athletes appealed, the decision to not send them to the 2012 Olympics in London was upheld. The experience fueled Krista to return to Rotterdam three years later where she improved her time and punched her ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics. Two years later, Krista conquered a gruelling Boston Marathon with wind, rain and cold temperatures to place 3rd overall and 1st masters. After the race, many blog posts discussed how Krista was the most prepared for the elements that day. We ask Krista about preparing for the race and how patience and perseverance led her to the podium. Last, but not least, we discuss the decision for Krista to attempt the Canadian 50K record and her approach to fueling, heat training (spoiler alert: it was HOT that day!) and what it was like to share the experience with her daughter. Krista also shares how her coach, and previous podcast guest, Reid Coolseat was instrumental in preparing her for the record attempt. Aoife Cooke had a promising junior Cross Country career that brought her to Arkansas Tech on a scholarship. She initially had success at college, but she struggled with osteopenia, the resulting injuries cut her college time short and she returned home. With the pause in her running career, she dropped off the radar, and she went through a challenging time as her running future looked uncertain. We dive into this and explore the steps, she took to have run the fastest marathon ever run by an Irish woman in Ireland in Dublin 2019 2:32:34. Coached by John Starrett, she has run the 5th fastest marathon time ever recorded by an Irish female runner. Her goal following Dublin is to achieve Olympic qualification. "I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and discovered this tremendous strength that I had.
