In March 2023, I created a piece of content that thoroughly examined the UK-only limited time offer branded pre-workout supplement that Gymshark created earlier that year by basically partnering with UK sports nutrition brand Applied Nutrition. And at the very end of that content, I mentioned that “I didn't think we'd be seeing Gymshark create a permanent supplement line or even tons of these LTO launches...at least in the short-term.” But since we're well past that timeframe mentioned, Gymshark just created another LTO supplement, and the activewear categorical boundaries have been decimated lately by investment decisions from ALO Yoga, NOBULL, and Reebok...I thought it was time to relook at my previous consideration if Gymshark should launch a line of sports nutrition supplements. And "from Nike to lululemon to Alo, these activewear brands aren't just selling apparel…they're selling a lifestyle.” Essentially, it's my belief that in today's marketplace, younger consumers (especially) are increasingly looking for visionary brands that are radically and bravely changing both our individual and global cultures with exciting and bold new lifestyle choices. So, if you weren't picking up what I was putting down…strategic narrative boldness is attractive and brand distinctiveness is highly defensible from a competitive landscape perspective but has become increasingly rare and difficult to achieve, as it requires both an artistic and scientific approach to create a unifying, central idea with the right combination and orchestration of all brand elements. Yet, as I mentioned earlier, several activewear brands have recently made strategic investments that sought to innovate around their consumer's specific lifestyles (and altered legacy categorical boundaries). But what about Gymshark? Why hasn't the activewear brand evolved past traditional product category constraints to own a larger slice of its customers' identity? And before anyone points towards company size (based on annual revenue), Gymshark reported growing 9% YoY and generated just over $800 million in revenue during its latest fiscal year…a number that exceeds or puts it in relatively close proximity to those previously mentioned activewear brands. Instead, I think Gymshark struggled to continually show up as its unmistakable self, as the activewear brand attempted to gain more acceptance across the adoption curve. Said another way…Gymshark got lost during its pursuit of more customers. And I think that became a major factor into why founder Ben Francis returned as CEO in August 2021, despite Gymshark successfully scaling from a smaller brand. So, after embarking on an almost four-year journey…there seems to be singularity and focus once again with the marketing and brand building strategy. And its revived brand distinctiveness harkens back to why Ben Francis originally founded Gymshark in the first place…realizing “no one really made clothes for the bodybuilding scene.” So, even though launching “Gymshark Nutrition” would undoubtedly create a loss of focus on the core business…and the current landscape is arguably even more challenging (and uncertain) for the apparel industry, I'm convinced Gymshark could successfully evolve past traditional product category constraints to own a larger slice of its customers' identity. Today, host Pete Moore sits down with Michael Pesta, a veteran in the HALO space whose career has bridged the fitness, entertainment, and tech industries. Michael shares his journey from his beginnings at AFAA—where he played a key role in pioneering fitness education and telemarketing globally—to an unexpected pivot into film and music production. Mike's story started in the mid-1980s, when, as a struggling actor, he agreed to help move boxes at an organization he hadn't heard of—never suspecting it would literally change his life. Michael quickly found himself drawn into the organization's mission and over time, rose from a casual volunteer to become the director of membership. Michael is now back in the HALO sector with an innovative focus on telefitness, aiming to bridge the longstanding gap between the fitness and healthcare industries. Pete and Michael discuss the evolution of fitness education, the changing landscape of personal training, the integration of technology, and Pesta's vision for a new era where trainers, healthcare professionals, and clients all connect seamlessly. Key themes discussed Evolution of fitness industry education and certification. Partnerships between fitness brands and major companies (e.x., Reebok.) Transition from fitness to entertainment and back. The rise of telefitness and telehealth platforms. The challenges and benefits of online personal training. The importance of connecting fitness with healthcare services. A few key takeaways: 1. AFAA's Early Days and Industry Impact: Pesta entered the fitness space by chance with AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America), which at the time was a key player in fitness education and certifications. He helped develop their telemarketing division and played a major role in expanding programs globally, including strategic partnerships like outfitting instructors worldwide with Reebok shoes. 2. Adaptation and Collaboration Are Key in Fitness Partnerships: Michael highlighted the importance of partnerships between leading fitness brands and educators. Collaborations with companies like Reebok brought vast exposure and validation to AFAA's education programs. However, he also notes that how big brands like Nike and Reebok interact with the sector continues to evolve, and education may not always be their current focus, despite massive historical investments. 3. Career Shifts Bring Transferable Skills: After a successful run in fitness, Pesta took a leap into the entertainment industry, producing films and learning every facet of the production business. This gave him valuable skills in production, marketing, and distribution—skills he would later apply upon returning to the fitness and telehealth sectors. 4. The Next Big Thing-Telefitness as an Extension of Telehealth: Michael's current focus is to create a trusted, HIPAA-compliant platform that not only vets the best personal trainers but also positions them for direct referrals from healthcare providers. This effort aims to solve the industry's historical inability to connect personal training with mainstream healthcare. 5. Support and Upskilling for Personal Trainers: Telefitness will provide personal trainers with new opportunities for entrepreneurship, offering lead generation, business-building support (like webinars specifically for virtual training), and potential client referrals sourced from both healthcare and consumer channels. Trainers won't be charged upfront SaaS fees; instead, the model will center on revenue-sharing. The emphasis is on elevating trainers' roles, including launching specialties like the “medical personal trainer.” Resources: Michael Pesta: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-h-pesta-satori-1a9776a5/ AFAA: https://www.afaa.com Classroom Trainer: https://www.classroomtrainer.com Prospect Wizard: https://www.theprospectwizard.com Promotion Vault: http://www.promotionvault.com HigherDose: http://www.higherdose.com

A Day Inside Lori Vallow Daybell's Trial: The Photos, the Bullets, and the Warnings “You have a habit of adding things to witness answers, and when you do that, it's a form of testifying,” Judge Beresky told Lori Vallow Daybell in the final moments of the day, as court wrapped after a marathon of cross-examinations, autopsy details, and crime scene photos. By the time court adjourned at 4:34 p.m., Lori had spent hours at the podium cross-examining Chandler Police Detective Daniel Coons, trying to challenge the state's version of how Charles Vallow was shot and killed. It was her chance to unravel details about bullet trajectories, the positioning of shell casings, and whether her brother Alex Cox could've plausibly been where he claimed when the shots were fired. Coons held firm: the bullet trajectories were consistent with Charles being shot while lying on the floor, one bullet embedding in a baseboard. The shells? Just inches from the wall. And the gun, a .45 caliber semiautomatic, ejected to the right—not left, like Lori suggested might have mattered. At one point, Lori veered into the realm of firearms training, asking if center mass is what police are taught to aim for. Coons confirmed, yes—it's about stopping the threat. Then she asked if novice shooters are taught the same. He said no. It was a brief window into the angle she seemed to be aiming for, though the judge regularly reminded her to keep her own commentary out of the questioning. Photos of the home were admitted—over a hundred of them. Exterior shots. The front door. A Reebok hat on the floor. Blood pooling around Charles' body. A bat nearby. Projectiles in baseboards. Bullet casings marked with yellow placards. And in one particularly dramatic moment, a chunk of flooring was presented in court. It had been cut out to preserve a mark that investigators said was made by a bullet passing through Charles' body. Lori objected to some of the photos being admitted but was mostly overruled. The judge said the images helped the jury visualize the scene. She used some of the same photos in her cross, trying to push back on Coons' conclusions, asking if divots in walls or trajectories could have occurred differently, if maybe the shooter wasn't where Coons said. He stood his ground. Earlier in the day, Chandler Fire Captain Kent Keller testified about Charles' condition when medics arrived. Lividity and skin modeling were already setting in. His pupils were fixed. No electrical activity in the heart. CPR was initiated but quickly deemed futile. According to Keller, there was no indication anyone had attempted life-saving efforts before the fire crew arrived. The positioning of Charles' body, the small pool of blood, and the condition of his skin all suggested death had occurred some time before. Lori pressed Keller hard on the science of lividity and modeling. Could it happen in just a few minutes? Would medication change how the body looked? She floated the idea that maybe CPR had been done, just not effectively. Keller, and another paramedic named Cowden, said they saw no signs of it. In fact, they testified that effective CPR would've caused more bleeding—blood would've been forced out by the compressions. There just wasn't any, aside from the pooling underneath. At one point, Cowden described performing CPR while another EMT prepared the heart monitor. He said Charles was found with a baseball bat and ball cap nearby, but no one else was in the room. The house was otherwise empty, aside from officers clearing it. His account was backed up by Keller, who described the scene as calm, with the main objective being to assess, perform CPR, and confirm the lack of vital signs. Throughout the day, Lori tried to walk the line between playing defense attorney and defendant. She questioned procedure, timing, blood patterns, CPR protocols, and scene diagrams. But the judge frequently reminded her about courtroom boundaries. When she asked whether someone had spoken to the media, the judge called for a sidebar. When she objected to Coons' expert testimony, the judge ruled against her but gave her space to cross-examine thoroughly. As court neared the end, a small issue arose: subpoenas had been sent by the defense to detectives, but without contact info. The judge told Lori to have her investigator handle it. Also, she was reminded to flag any photo exhibits she needed by the following morning. With that, court adjourned. #LoriVallow #CharlesVallow #CrimeScene #TrueCrimeCourtroom Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Pix shared her experiences with car accidents and Covid, which led her to use her voice more purposefully for global issues. Both agreed on the importance of speaking up and not being afraid to upset people if it means being authentic. They also discussed the challenges they faced with social media platforms, including having their accounts deleted and the potential for hidden agendas. Questioning Sources and Mindset's Role Eldin and Pix discussed the importance of questioning sources and trusting peer-reviewed science. They highlighted the role of environment and mindset in chronic conditions, using Dr. Bruce Lipton's work on epigenetics as an example. They also touched on the influence of big pharma and cosmetics companies on public opinion and the dissemination of information. Eldin emphasised the need for critical thinking and not blindly accepting information, while Pix agreed on the power of the mind in shaping one's health. Mindset Shifts and Business Turnarounds In the meeting, Eldin and Pix discussed a client's transformation from a state of scarcity and doubt to one of abundance and certainty. The client, who was struggling financially and struggling to attract clients, was advised by Pix to create "invisible appointments" in her diary, which symbolised her openness to new opportunities. This shift in mindset and action led to a turnaround in the client's business, with clients appearing from "out of thin air". Pix emphasised the importance of aligning one's emotional state with their intentions and practicing beneficial rituals, even during challenging times. Eldin added that people should do more of these practices when they are busy and stressed, as it can lead to more productivity and creativity. Several years ago, I explored three strategic paths of extending into nutritional supplements that would be available to major lifestyle brands predominantly known for athletic apparel. And those were obviously entering the supplement category through acquisition, internal brand development, or creating a strategic partnership. But since that original content was released, several large athletic apparel brands have indeed decided to extend into nutritional supplements...and by leveraging each of those three strategic paths. The first example was ALO Yoga that internally developed its three SKU Stackable Wellness System that launched in August 2023. Next, an example of entering the supplement category through M&A happened in January 2024 when NOBULL acquired Tom Brady's wellness company TB12. Finally, the recent Reebok Nutrition announcement officially provided me with that final strategic path...with the multibillion-dollar global brand (now owned by Authentic Brand Group) deciding to enter the ingestible CPG world through maybe the least risky (and definitely most comfortable) manner of leveraging a licensing partnership. And I state that because ABG knows licensing extremely well…as it's the world's largest sports and entertainment licensing company. So, who's the strategic partner ABG chose for Reebok Nutrition? That would be Generation Joy, which is admittedly not a company I had ever heard of prior to this Reebok Nutrition announcement. From a quick search, it seems Generation Joy was founded in 2016 by certified holistic health coach Joy Harari. The first (or at least the most commercially successful) creation from Generation Joy is a nutricosmetic cosmeceutical mashup brand leveraging marine collagen called Shore Magic. But more importantly, my latest first principles thinking content will explore (1) why did Reebok decide now is the time to enter the sports nutrition market and (2) what could impact the probability that Reebok Nutrition will be successful?
