"They just want a chance to compete." Yesterday, after much anticipation and speculation, USA Track & Field announced the changes to the qualifying times for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. So, what's it going to take to OTQ leading up to LA 2028, and to get to run at the Trials? For women, the qualifying mark stays the same: 2:37:00. On the men's side, things are getting faster: Men will now need to run 2:16:00 to qualify — a full two minutes faster than the qualifying time for the 2024 Trials. The “A” standard will be determined at a later date in coordination with the LOC. Athletes with the “A” standard will get travel funding to the Olympic Trials. Athletes with the “B” standard will be guaranteed entry to the Olympic Trials.– For the “B” standard: Women who want to race will have to run 2:37:00 or faster. This is the same as the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standard. Women will also be able to qualify if they run 1:12:00 for the half marathon or faster, which is the same as the 2024 qualifier.– For the “B” standard: Men who want to race will have to run 2:16:00 or faster. Send us a textSteve Brumwell, 67, has been immersed in sports since junior high, excelling in basketball, football, track, and cross country. A standout athlete, he earned a scholarship to UC Santa Barbara where he focused on distance running and the steeplechase. After a 37-year career as a high school PE teacher and basketball coach, Steve returned to competitive running, inspired by his youngest daughter's collegiate cross country journey. He lost over 40 pounds in seven weeks so that he could run with her. Though he now is mostly retired from road racing after competing in events like the USATF road circuit and the Boston Marathon, Steve continues to race on the track, representing the SoCal Track Club with former college teammates. Despite recent injuries and setbacks, he stays motivated by the friendships and community he's built through Masters athletics. Today's guest needs no introduction—but he definitely earned a new one.Olin Hacker is back—and this time, he's bringing a U.S. title with him.Just weeks ago, Olin stormed to victory at the USATF 5000m Championships in Indianapolis, running 13:32 to claim his first national crown. But this moment wasn't built in a month—it was years in the making.As a collegiate runner, Olin secured multiple Big Ten championships while running for Wisconsin in 2022, winning both the indoor 3000m and 5000m events, as well as the outdoor 5000m.The highlight came in 2022 at the Oregon Relays, where he shattered the meet record in the 5000m, clocking 13:19.34 and improving his personal best by 16 seconds.The rise continued, as Olin represented the U.S. at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, finishing fifth in the 3000m with a season-best of 7:45.4.The Wisconsin Badger alum owns impressive PRs of 13:08.76 in the 5000m,  7:38.10 in the 3000m, and 3:56.59 in the mile. US Indoor 800m Champion Nia Akins joins the show after kicking off the year in impressive fashion, claiming an indoor title and proving that she's back and better than ever.Nia won the USATF 800m Indoor title with a time of 1:59.31 in New York in February. She then followed that up by advancing to the semifinals in the Indoor Championships in China in March. Despite a fall in the semis, she still finished strong in 2:04.38 and barely missed the finals. Nia, a native of San Diego, California, ran for the University of Pennsylvania, where she had PRs of 55.38 in the 400m;2:00.71 in the 800m; and 2:43.92 in the 1,000m. During her time there she was a two-time 800m runner-up. She also won a silver medal at the 2019 NACAC U23 Championships.Nia began her post-collegiate career in 2020 after running the second-fastest 800m time in NCAA history. Nia won the 800m US Olympic Trials in Oregon in 2024, where she ran a career PR of 1:57.36; she ended up reaching the semi-finalsin the 800m during the Paris Olympics. Previously of the Brooks Beast Track Club, Nia is now representing HOKA. Nia has an artistic side as well, and enjoys recording music in her down time. In today's conversation, Nia shares very raw and honest insights from her past year of running, training, and life. Send us a text  Coach Cappos is the owner of Thower X, Prior to that he accumulated over 25 years of collegiate coaching experience. Cappos has had more than 100 athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, coached more than 50 athletes to conference championships and All-America honors in the shot put, discus, javelin, hammer, weight throw, long jump, high jump, heptathlon and decathlon. Coach Cappos spent 7 years as the Assistant Throws Coach at the University of Nebraska, He spent 18 seasons as an assistant coach and director of field events at the University of Iowa where, his athletes rewrote the records in Iowa City, including eight of the top-10 all-time shot-putters, nine of the top-10 all-time discus throwers and all 10 of the top javelin, hammer and weight throwers in Hawkeye history. Before coaching at Iowa, Cappos was an assistant coach at Western Michigan University. He trained seven All-Americans during his tenure, and Western Michigan winning the MAC and CCC team titles both seasons. Cappos started his coaching career at West Salem High School in Wisconsin. Coach Cappos is one of a handful of USATF Level III certified coaches in the throwing events, he is a USATF Level II certified coach in the jumps and a certified instructor for USATF. Cappos coached with Team USA at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships, leading athletes to 10 gold medals. Coach Cappos earned Regional Throws Coach of Year from USTFCCCA in 2007. Cappos was a professional track and field athlete while teaching and coaching. He competed at the Pan American Games, World University Games and the Commonwealth Games for Canada. During his athletic career at Indiana University, Cappos won the Big Ten Championship in the shot put in 1990 and 1991 and was a three-time All-American. Versatile distance runner and HOKA professional, Ahmed Muhumed, joins the show today to discuss his humble beginnings and his ambitions for the future. Ahmed was born and raised in Ethiopia, before coming to the U.S. with his family in 2011. He started running in middle school, and then became a cross country and track star at West Salem High School in Oregon. (Ahmed won back to back cross country titles in high school.)At Boise State, Ahmed was the Mountain West freshman of the year in cross country in 2017. He was also the 2020 champion in the indoor mile in the Mountain West conference. Ahmed then went on to grad school at Florida state, where he similarly thrived on the running scene. He finished 20th at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships; he also competed at both the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships his final semester. Ahmed parlayed his college success into a professional contract, and in his rookie year as a professional for HOKA in 2022-23 he set PRs in the 3k, 5k and 10k. His list of PRs include a sizzling 13:08.73 in the 5k; 3:37.36 in the 1,500m; and 3:57.32 in the mile. Ahmed had a successful 2024 campaign, as he started it with a third place finish at the USATF Cross Country championships, and then closed it out in the fall of 2024 with a second national title–this time at the USATF 5k Championships in New York City. His impressive range was on display as he won the Philadelphia Half Marathon in late November with a time of 1:03.15.Ahmed earned a degree in International and Global Studies at Boise State before receiving his master's degree in International Relations and Affairs from Florida State. In today's conversation, Ahmed takes me through his humble beginnings, how he transitioned into the states and went from soccer player to runner, how his upbringing shaped him, how he has built up and maintained self-belief throughout the years, his ambitions as a professional runner, and much more.It's hard not to listen to Ahmed and love the guy. Jenny Sandoval is the 2022 NCAA DII 10,000 national champion, and now running as a post-collegiate elite/pro, she is focused on discovering her full potential in the sport. It's been a time of big ups and downs, as Sandoval navigates life as an elite runner, with a full time job. Her performance at the recent USATF cross country national championships, held on January 11 in Lubbock, Texas, was a high point, after a period of serious injury. Sandoval shares how it all went down at the national championships, from her point of view. And she shares the details of what running life has looked like over the past few years, including another surprise incredible performance, in her debut marathon: it was both a heartbreaker and a performance beyond expectation. "Kurt's seen it and my teammates have seen it. I've gotten better every single week for two years straight. So the world is seeing this massive jump, but for me, it's over 100 weeks of improvement. That's super steady. At some point it was going to be reflected in one big performance. It didn't happen overnight." In March 2023, Erika Kemp was gearing up to make her marathon debut. The six-time collegiate All-American and multiple-time USATF national champion was on a racing hot streak, having earned titles from the 5K up to the 20K. She had just signed with Brooks Running, and was being coached by Kurt Benninger. But, Erika insisted, she hadn't had her big, breakout, career-defining performance yet.  That changed this past weekend at the Houston Marathon. Erika finished second in 2:22:56 — and 11-minute personal best, and comfortably under the world standard. She remains the fastest American-born Black woman in the marathon. "Sometimes a short build up can do a miracle. So I'm hoping for the miracle in Chicago!" In a stacked field of elite runners, Betsy Saina is absolutely one to watch at this weekend's Chicago Marathon. Betsy is a 2:19 marathoner — a time that makes her the third-fastest American woman marathoner (behind Emily Sisson and Keira D'Amato). She's a 2016 Olympian who competed in the 10,000m, and she's the 2024 USATF 25K Champion and women-only American record holder in that distance. She's a three-time NCAA champion who ran at Iowa State University, and she currently lives and trains primarily in Kenya.
