USA Track & Field and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee have selected St. Louis, Missouri, to host the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Marathon Trials. The races will be held on March 25th, 2028, and will be USATF's first Olympic Team selection event for the 2028 Summer Games.The top three men's and women's finishers across the finish line will earn spots on Team USA for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games… as long as they have secured the Olympic qualifying standard or are sitting inside the World Athletics rankings quota within the qualifying window. She trains under Andrew and Amy Begley at Heartland Track Club in Indianapolis, and in 2026 she has already set the American Record at 8K (24:29 at the Shamrock Shuffle), won the USATF 10-Mile title at Cherry Blossom, won the 25K title at the Gate River Run and finished second at the USATF 5K Championships in her own city, running 15:00 flat to miss the sub-15 barrier by four-tenths of a second.She is also, as of this week, officially confirmed as one of the scoring members of the U.S. half marathon team for Copenhagen — one of the three athletes who were misdirected in the closing mile of the USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta in March. World Athletics granted a special exception that will allow seven American women to compete, with Jess McClain, Emma Grace, and Ednah Kurgat as the scoring athletes alongside Weini Kelati. The top three official finishers — Molly Born, Carrie Ellwood, and Annie Rodenfels — will make their international debuts as non-scoring athletes.What makes Emma Grace one of the more interesting stories in American distance running right now is the shape of her career. She graduated from Furman in 2020 with a 15:57 5K personal best, quit running entirely, took a client associate job at JP Morgan, and did not think she was coming back to the sport. She is now a 15:00 road 5K runner, an 8K American record holder, a national 10-mile champion, and a two-event Worlds qualifier. Cue the comments section. We think this one is going to get a lot of attention - good and bad. It was a slower-news, running week, so there were a lot of angry runners arguing on social media about silly (?) things. Naturally, Des and Kara have to weigh in because many of you did already. But first (!)... Kara gives us a recap of Colt's amazing run in the 2-mile at state, after correcting the record on his 800m PR. His race at state was full of surges, but he finished higher than his seed in 14th and now is exciting to head to the Brooks PR meet. Meanwhile, Des is enjoying her time off from training but is now feeling the urge to get started again before this becomes a permanent break. Then, they dig into the drama with reactions about the Satisfy Running debate, where many people (particularly in the trail world) are frustrated about how they are showing up in the sport. Satisfy is a new-ish running shoe and apparel brand. Their gear is really expensive, but should we be mad about it? As a fun side question on this debate, Kara was asked: "Is she sad that she missed the NIL era with her own college career?" Next, they weigh in on the Cam Hanes vs. Sage Cannaday showdown on the socials. Sage turned Cam into USADA for openly admitting to using banned substances in his build-up to the Eugene Marathon (where he won his age group and placed 2nd Masters). Many people are mad at Sage on social media, defending Cam since there was no money or Team USA spot on the line. The Eugene Marathon, however, is a USATF-sanctioned event where there are rules against doping, amateur or not. What is the obligation of the amateur to follow anti-doping rules and do we want USADA or WADA worried about enforcement for the entire field? She is the 2025 NCAA 400m champion, and was also part of team USA's 4x400m that won Gold at the 2024 Olympic Games.Aaliyah is a rising star in 400m sprinting both in the United States and globally. In addition to qualifying for the 2024 Olympics and 2025 World Championships, she has competed on the diamond league circuit, including going toe-to-toe with the Olympic Champion in Monaco last year.Her personal best of 49.09 seconds makes her one of the fastest women in the world, and now in her first full year as a pro, she has her eyes set on solidifying her spot amongst the best.In our conversation, we discuss Aaliyah's 2026 opening races, including a masterful 4x4 relay split of 48.6 seconds. The World Athletics Relays wrapped up Sunday with world records, championship records, and the first automatic qualifiers secured for Budapest and Beijing 2027.Discussed in this episode:- Jamaica broke their own mixed 4x100m world record — 39.62 in the final- USA smashed the mixed 4x400m championship record — 3:07.47- Host nation Botswana won the men's 4x400m in 2:54.47 — third fastest in history — in front of a packed home crowd described as one of the best atmospheres in recent track memory- Norway stunned the field in the women's 4x400m with a world-leading national record of 3:20.96- The race of the meet: The men's 4x400m final produced one of the most jaw-dropping relay performances ever. Botswana (2:54.47), South Africa (2:55.07), and Australia (2:55.20) went 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all time. The world record of 2:54.29 — set by the US in 1993 — survives, but barely. All three anchors were shoulder to shoulder on the final bend before Botswana's Collen Kebinatshipi pulled away with what witnesses described as otherworldly closing speed.- The split that turned heads: South African sprinter Lythe Pillay ran a 42.66 relay split — a stunning leg for an athlete whose individual PB coming in was 44.31.- The lane 3 controversy Another story emerged from Day 1 of the World Relays — and it's a troubling one. The running community was up in arms this past week over so many things, so naturally Des and Kara must talk about it! Yes, they get to the positive aftermath of the Atlanta kerfluffle, and then they dig into the NYC marathon charity debate, the LA marathon "photo finish," the course misdirection for the leader there, and of course, the 18-mile medal drama. "It's been a really, really tough couple days. I've never been such a combination of stressed and sad." At Sunday's USA Track and Field Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta, the top three women — Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat — were led off course in the final mile of the race. The three were on track to take the podium, and to earn spots to represent the United States on a World Championship team. All signs were pointing to Jess, Emma Grace, and Ednah becoming Team USA ahead of the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen this September. National titles, prize money, sponsor bonuses, and, of course, the glory of breaking the tape and earning that moment were all on the line. Much has been said about the race, the misdirection, and the immediate aftermath. Molly Born ultimately broke the tape, as Jess, Emma Grace, and Ednah clawed their way back into the mix. But what happens now? The one unanimous takeaway from that day in Atlanta is that no one feels good about how the day played out. Today, Emma Grace Hurley comes to us from her much-deserved post-race vacation in the Cayman Islands to offer her unique perspective on all of this. Emma Grace spent the early years of her running career as a member of Atlanta Track Club Elite. She has served on committees for USA Track and Field, and currently lives in Indianapolis, where she is coached by former Atlanta Track Club Elite coach Andrew Begley. This week we're joined by Allison Mercer, a Team USA ultrarunner, championship competitor, and thoughtful voice in the running community, to unpack the controversy that unfolded at the 2026 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta.Allison is an accomplished distance runner who has represented the United States at the ultrarunning world championships and competed at national championship events herself. “Track running has really exploded recently in America. Everyone's running super fast times. Even in the half marathon, people have dipped under 60 [minutes] this year. I think the same thing could happen in the marathon... I certainly think that American marathoners can be competitive on the global stage.”Our guest today is Ethan Shuley. If you didn't know his name a few weeks ago, you weren't alone. But after what he just did in Japan, the entire American distance running community is paying attention.At the Osaka Marathon, Ethan ran 2:07:14 and finished 14th overall to become the 7th-fastest American marathoner ever on a record-eligible course. No sponsorship. No professional team. No long résumé of NCAA accolades. Just a runner who, until recently, was training largely on his own while living in Tokyo and going to film school. “My times were dropping and it was so exciting. Every week, they were dropping, dropping, dropping. It was pretty early in the season, too. At that point, I hadn't even made NCAAs. At the time when I ran 2:00, I had the number one time in the country. There was a lot that happened super fast… I think that was my favorite race of my life. I never even thought in my mind that I could run 2:00 even earlier on in the season. “I saw the door open and I really desperately wanted to take it and walk through it, but I wasn't sure if it was right – but sometimes you know deep down in your gut that it's something you should do and you take the risk. Since making that decision, it's felt right and true to what I want to do and where my goals are."My guest for today's episode is Roisin Willis. In 2026, we're celebrating six years of New Balance partnering with CITIUS and we're grateful for their support on all levels from the high school to the pros.In the span of just nine days, Roisin put together a short yet impactful indoor season. She opened up her professional career by running 1:59.59 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, looking smooth and convincing. Six days later, after deciding almost on a whim to race again, she went to Boston University and ran 1:57.97, becoming the first American woman to break 1:58 indoors and setting a new American record in the 800m. That's also a personal best for her indoors and outdoors, and she wasn't done yet. Just two days after that record, Roisin lined up at the Millrose Games and won the 600m in 1:24.87, the seventh fastest performance by an American woman in history. Three races in nine days, two victories, one American record, and proof that she's in absolutely phenomenal shape.Roisin has made the decision to shut down her indoor season. The reason for it is she has a long-term vision and a real life, which you get the sense from my conversation with her. She wants to be at a world-class level come outdoors and that means getting back to training. As she puts it plainly, she also needs to finish school at Stanford this spring.You'll hear more about the importance of finishing her degree in our chat because at just 21 years old, Roisin has already lived multiple chapters in the sport. Charlie Lawrence isn't a loud figure, but he's one of the most dangerous endurance runners in the world. He is a professional ultramarathon and marathon runner who owns the 50-mile world record, the 100k American record, and he's an Olympic Trials qualifier.His 50-mile world record was run in an astonishing 4:48:21 in November of 2023. Most recently he set the American 100k record in December of 2025 at the Desert Solstice Track Invitational with a time of 6:07:10. He then lowered it in August of 2025 with the second-fastest 100k time in history with a 6:03:47 at the Adidas Chasing 100.He has a marathon PR of 2:16:10 from October of 2023 that qualified him for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials. He won the men's title at the USATF 50k Road Championships in April of 2025, setting a course record with a time of 2:49:01. Charlie grew up in Foley, Minnesota, and was the son of two cross-country coaches; he ran collegiately at the University of Minnesota where he owned PRs of 14:29.11 in the 5,000m indoor, 9:31.88 in the 3,000m Steeplechase, and 30:25.60 in the 10,000m outdoor. Charlie is a monster and he's only 30 years old.
