Run Culture Podcast — Episode 192“Learning the Marathon: with Ned Verwey”This week I sit down with my brother and fellow Run Culture coach, Nedra (Ned Verwey), who just ran a five-minute PB at the 2025 Melbourne Marathon — 2:31:02!We talk about the journey from his Ballarat “Boom or Bust” build earlier in the year to putting it all together in Melbourne — what changed, what worked, and what he learned along the way.Ned shares the key sessions, the mental battle up the Tan, and how he found better rhythm and confidence throughout this build. To wrap up, we dive into coaching — and the principles he's come to believe in: full-spectrum training, functional volumes, individualising the process, flexible consistency, coaching the whole person, and the importance of ‘wanting' rather than ‘having' to train.A grounded chat about patience, consistency, and what it really means to keep mastering the 'thon. Ned currently has a couple of coaching spots available — if you're interested in working with him, email dsverwey@gmail.com or message either of us on socials to enquire.

This week on the Better With Running podcast, hosts Chris Armstrong and Zac Newman are joined by Australian marathon record holder, olympian r and fellow Run2PB coach, Andy Buchanan, for a Melbourne Marathon race week special. Chris shares his latest training, detailing a 72km week capped off by a challenging progression session (2 x Mile, 2 x 800m, Mile, 800m) where he started conservatively and made each rep progressively faster. This segment naturally leads into a discussion about coaching philosophy, with Andy stressing that success is found in consistently putting in and absorbing the work, not overcomplicating a single session, a lesson he's imparted to Chris over the last five years. The conversation takes a serious turn as Andy reflects on his planned World Championships campaign. He recounts a "blur" of travel and training, including a challenging heat prep camp in Cairns and his impressive win at the Sunny Coast Half. Andy addresses the inevitable follow-up question regarding the setback, offering his perspective on what went wrong and how he mentally reset after the disappointment. With the focus now firmly on the future, Andy details the strategic balancing act of his Valencia build, and how he will attack it. The episode concludes with invaluable insights for all the athletes lining up at the Melbourne Marathon. With thanks to Oat Running our partner, Chris will be gifted some Oat Running Socks.Listeners of the show can get a a 15% discount using "run2pb15" at the check out. Chris Armstrong kicks off the show with his training update, logging a solid 75kms and crushing a 7x1km session with reps dropping into the 3:19/km range,Returning to the show this week is Chris Hillhouse, a self-employed gardener, is an athlete who has made a transformative shift from running a self-devised half marathon that left him unable to walk for two weeks, to a 73min man under the guidance of run2pb coach Josh Harris. The interview delves into Chris's unique journey, beginning with a quick recap of his progression from a novice runner to a competitive athlete. They discuss how he manages the significant challenge of balancing the physical demands of his gardening job with hitting key marathon sessions and long runs. What do a 14-year-old laptop, a sub-3-hour marathon, and a vet-turned-race-doctor with a roll of Glad Wrap have in common? They're all part of Kelvin Marshall's wildly entertaining running life—and we've only just scratched the surface in Part One of this two-part ZenRUN Podcast episode! In this first instalment, Kelvin shares how a childhood spent walking Melbourne's streets led to a lifetime on the run (literally). From spotting the Melbourne Marathon outside his front door and saying, “I could do that,” to running 250 marathons (and counting), Kelvin's story is full of unexpected detours, classic Aussie grit, and so many laugh-out-loud moments.

This week's "Better With Running" podcast prepares listeners for the Gold Coast Marathon, featuring Run2PB coach Matt Davy and returning guest Liam Beecroft. Matt Davy offers crucial advice for race week, emphasizing that feeling "sluggish" or having "dead legs" during the taper is a normal and positive sign that the body is adapting and strengthening. He advises runners to resist the urge to "test" themselves with hard efforts and to trust their accumulated training. Practical tips include picking up race bibs early to avoid queues, avoiding excessive walking at the expo, and ensuring race day essentials are packed in carry-on luggage for those traveling. Matt also delves into optimal fueling and hydration strategies, stressing the importance of quality over quantity when carb-loading 2-3 days before the race, focusing on simple carbohydrates while avoiding high-fiber foods, excess protein, and fats to prevent stomach upset. The episode further covers race day execution and mental fortitude. Matt suggests a conservative start for the flat Gold Coast course to avoid going out too fast and recommends aiming for a negative split or consistent pacing, breaking the race into smaller, manageable segments. Mental preparation involves visualizing success, having a race mantra, and focusing on controllable factors like pacing, breathing, and hydration. Finally, Liam Beecroft, a Run2PB athlete and Accredited Practising Dietitian, provides expert insights into nutrition for runners. He discusses fundamental nutritional pillars for daily training, carbohydrate needs for different race distances, and optimal pre- mid and post-workout meal recommendations. Liam also covers effective carb-loading and race morning strategies, addresses the role of supplements versus a balanced diet. He highlights common nutritional mistakes and how to avoid them, Liam is a 2:37 marathoner, and ran his 5k in 15:58 in 2024, he is prepping for Melbourne Marathon later this year to have a crack at lowering that time even further. Kate Mason was found dancing with tambourines and maracas in a Ballarat carpark just hours after she won the marathon there. And with a win, a course record and a PB of 2:33:55, why wouldn't you?! In this episode of Run With It, Kate recaps her race, including some critical changes she made to her fuelling this time around, and the post marathon carpark DJ set with her training mates. The full-time secondary school teacher (Outdoor and Environmental Studies & PE) trains with her beloved Ninch Track Club (NTC), based on the Mornington Peninsula, just outside of Melbourne. Kate takes us through her transition from an enthusiastic and passionate “jogger” who debuted at Melbourne Marathon in 3:06 in 2014, to winning Ballarat a decade later. She also shares some terrifying experiences of getting the “wobbles” and collapsing during marathons, recounting a particularly scary instance on the Gold Coast. Despite not yet seeing herself as “elite”, Kate continues to improve. She thinks some of her success comes from not taking the sport too seriously. Kate is self-coached, with guidance from her partner Ben and her training crew. The ep closes out with some pencilled in plans for the rest of the year and what motivates her to keep rocking up every day in the dark at 5am for a run. -- Run With It: @runwithit.pod Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
If Gen Gregson and husband Ryan could take turns being pregnant, Gen would happily have five kids. But in the absence of this sci-fi parallel universe, the four-time Olympian is extremely excited to be expecting baby number two – a new brother for Archer! This episode is part of a mini-series featuring some of our mighty marathon mums. In this wonderful conversation, Gen opens up about training while pregnant – a lot of what she does is based on feel (and notes in Jess Stenson's training diary). She talks about mum strength allowing her to appreciate what she's already achieved and take the pressure off to do every single one percenter, which helps her run freer and perform at a higher level. We also talk about how she's learnt to be flexible and adapt to adversity. Gen goes into the learnings from her marathons to-date (Gold Coast, Valencia, Paris, Melbourne), what it's like to have two elite athletes chasing big goals under one roof, and how even elite athletes aren't immune from mum guilt. This episode is also dedicated to Jess Stenson, who wins the best supporting actress role in the conversation. (That's what happens when you get two key members of the Jess Stenson appreciation society together on a Zoom call.) -- Gen Gregson is a four-time Olympian (Paris, Tokyo, Rio, London), and has ambitions to go to two more Olympics in her career. Gen started out on the track, earning herself an Australian Record in the 3000m steeplechase (9:14.28). After sustaining a horrific achilles injury clearing the final water jump in the Tokyo Olympics final, Gen had her first child, Archer while rehabbing double achilles surgery. She has since transitioned to the roads, taking to the marathon like a natural, running 2:28 on debut in her hometown of the Gold Coast, before being the fastest Australian across the line in a big head-to-head battle for an Olympic qualifier at Valencia (2:23:08). In 2024, she ran the Olympic Marathon at Paris and won Melbourne Marathon later that year. -- Gen Gregson's Instagram: @gengen_lacaze Run With It Instagram: @runwithit.pod Elise Beacom's Instagram: @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
From running on a treadmill in a hot air balloon, to becoming a dad, Reece Edwards is always the first to put his hand up for a new adventure. In this conversation, we talk about his new running life as a dad to Oliver, what dad strength means to Reece and how his perspective on running has changed since his son arrived. Between constant sickness, reduced sleep and balancing family and work life, it's not easy to train at such a high level. But Reece says it's all worth it to be a dad! This episode is part of a mini-series featuring some of our mighty marathon mums (or in this case, dads)! We talk about his recent back-to-back wins at Port Fairy Marathon and what it was like to reel in two Olympians to break the tape at Melbourne Marathon in 2023. We also cover the importance of keeping some “silliness” and fun in Reece's training, why running is better when it's social, his goals for the future (including an outrageous long run), and what it feels like to actually be content with your PBs. -- Reece Edwards is a long and ultra distance runner who came to the sport later in life. He ran 2:13:23 at Rotterdam Marathon in 2021 and has a PB of 1:03:38 in the half marathon, which he ran the same year in Copenhagen. Domestically, he won Melbourne Marathon in 2023 and Port Fairy Marathon in 2024 and 2025. Reece has also been successful on the trails, winning several prestigious events including, Ultra Trail Australia 100k, Tarawera 102k and Berry Long run. Reece is a dad to Oliver and works as a rehabilitation physiotherapist and is based in Melbourne. -- Reece Edwards' Instagram: @reecedwards7 Run With It Instagram: @runwithit.pod Elise Beacom's Instagram: @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
Today and over the next couple of months I've got something a bit different for you all! Each week I am going to catch up with my brother; Ned Verwey and good friends from down here on the 'Ninch'; Kate Mason and Aaron Sim, as we all train towards the 2025 Ballarat Marathon in just under 10 weeks time. We will catch up weekly to chat about the inevitable ups/downs and life hurdles typically encountered in a marathon build. I hope this podcast can inspire, entertain and/or influence other runners in some way. I also hope it highlights the fact that we can all come at the marathon from different angles and different approaches. That we all have similar challenges and different challenges, and that no one is perfect and that's ok! We aim to have a lot of fun:)More about the Guests:Aaron Sim is a 35 year old father of two, who only picked up running during COVID (2021). In the space of 3 years he has dropped his marathon time from 2:50 to 2:25:32! From 2008-2013 he travelled far and wide playing drums for an Indie band. Prior to finding running, he was an avid golfer! He's now a music teacher at Woodleigh Secondary.Kate Mason is one of the most infectiously bubbly and positive people you will meet. Her and her partner, Ben Griffith (Griffo) with their fur baby Nala in tow, intentionally make their whole life 'not' about running. If they aren't caravanning in NZ, they are always doing something interesting be it: mountain biking, going to a gig, catching up with friends or house renos etc...Kate's an incredibly talented runner with amazing grit and endurance, coming 3rd in 2:34:08 at the Melbourne Marathon in 2024. My brother Ned Verwey is 32 years old and lives in Anglesea and works in Prosthetics and Orthotics at Ballarat Hospital. He was a super talented junior track runner over 1500m-3,000m medaling Nationally! During University years he enjoyed himself and running fell by the way side. He then had several years plagued by injury. However, with patience, persistence and the helpful encouragement of his lovely wife Simone McInnes (also a runner) he has slowly got himself back to the strongest and fittest he has ever been. He's learnt a lot through the process and loves going out for a run everyday! And, then there is myself; Dane, a 39 year old father of two, I have been immersed in running my whole life; as a runner, physiotherapist and coach. This will be my 19th marathon and there is certainly a deep seated motivation to turn back the clock a little, show myself that I can still do it and nail a 'dad PB'!Listen in if you want :)

By Davy Crockett Sue Ellen Trapp was one of the elite women pioneer ultrarunners who burst into the sport in the 1970s. She was the fourth person to be inducted into The American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame. She quickly achieved world and American records and showed how fast and how far women could run. With a busy life including her dental practice and family, she rose to the top of the sport twice, after an eight-year ultrarunning retirement, setting world and American records in her 40s and 50s. Learn about the rich and long history of ultrarunning. There are now eleven books available in the Ultrarunning History series on Amazon, compiling podcast content and much more. Learn More. Her parents were Robert Roy Hamilton (1908-1971), a tool and die maker, and Marie Blanche (Festner) Hamilton (1910-1999). She had a brother, Ross Hamilton (1942-2014) of Chicago. Her ancestors were from Pennsylvania, Germany, Austria, and Denmark. Sue Ellen and Kristina In the late 1960s, Sue Ellen went to dental school and married Ronald Edward Trapp (1943-), of Minnesota, who was also a dentist and entered the navy in 1969. He had been a cross-country runner in college. In 1971, Ron was stationed in San Francisco, California, as Sue Ellen was finishing dental school at the University of Illinois Dental School in Chicago. She gave birth to her daughter Kristina Trapp (1971-) in April while in California, and then graduated from dental school in June. Ron and Sue Ellen training in 1975 Trapp said that she thought the baby weight would melt off, but it never did, so she took up competitive tennis and swimming, with some running to help her get into shape. Her first road race came in 1971, San Francisco's 12 km Bay to Breakers. She said, “I thought I'd just try it, and it was awful.” Later that year, the family moved to Lehigh Acres, Florida, a suburb of Fort Myers. She and Ron set up a dental practice together and Ron took up running and tennis, too. Results of her tennis tournaments would appear in the paper and starting in 1975, she was doing well in running races, too. In 1975, Sue Ellen ran her first marathon at Gainesville, Florida, with 4:04, but gained speed quickly. She placed second in the 1976 AAU Marathon Championships in Crowley, Louisiana, with 3:10:32. The two of them won husband/wife division of that championship. That marathon finish qualified her to run the Boston Marathon by 20 minutes. Trapp won the 1975 and 1976 Melbourne Marathon, in a course record with 3:40:18 and 3:09:46. In 1976, the Trapps started the Rotary 5-miler for Lehigh Acres runners before there was even the Fort Myers Track Club. That race became a 5K and lasted for more than 40 years. Trapp was one of the very early women to run the Boston Marathon. She finished in 1977 with 3:52:33. She would run that prestigious marathon for several years and brought her time down to 3:00:42 in 1979. First Ultra Florida Space Coast 50 km After stacking up many wins during 1978 of distances from 5 miles to the half marathon, it was time for Trapp to try an ultramarathon. Her first ultra, held on December 30, 1978, was an unusual one. She ran with a field of 54 runners in the Florida Space Coast 50 km, thought to be the world's longest beach run. At age 32, she was the first woman finisher and the tenth overall, with a time of 4:09:42. That impressive time on such a rough surface, ranked her 5th in the world for the 50 km distance. 1979-1981 – World and American Records Lydi Pallares running the 100K In February 1979, Trapp went to run a road 100K in Miami, Florida, with a massive field of 88 runners. It was also the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) National Championship. They ran a 3.3-mile loop in a park 19 times.
