Rachel Drake is a professional trail runner with Nike, co-host of The Trail Network Podcast, mom of 2-year old Lew, and a newly-minted medical resident in Salt Lake City, UT. A few weekends ago, she ran, won, and broke the course record for women at the JFK 50 Miler in northern Virginia—a huge accomplishment on its own, but especially considering all of the above. We talked to Rachel about her time as a collegiate athlete, finding trail running and a close community of friends in that space when she moved to Portland OR, and eventually getting back to racing on the trails and roads (and doing it well!). And she shared the full story of her postpartum running process, getting a sacral stress fracture soon after she got back into high volume training. "We don't hear about the struggle, and I think the struggle is the predominating experience," she said, when we talked about her injury and how she felt like she wasn't seeing as any stories about setbacks. How so often, what's shared is centered around the wins, the course records, the "bounce backs". Tune in to hear Rachel's full story, and what she's eyeing for 2025! We had so much fun with this no-secrets episode on the Leadville 100 Mile course record! We answered a couple dozen listener questions on everything from training theory to race execution to supplements. We even detailed some harrowing stories about post-race recovery that will leave you breathless (from laughing). Throughout the history of the podcast, we have tried to be open books about everything. Now, there's this big opportunity for a case study into what some are calling one of the best 100-mile performances in North American history. Have you ever wondered about training, nutrition, logistics, mindset, or anything else? We're holding nothing back. This podcast audience has been there since the beginning. Thank you for believing in us as we've been so open along the way. You can never be sure where the journey goes, especially athletically when so much is out of our control. But if you stack bricks for a decade or two, you might just F around and find out. This one is for the brick-stackers. We love you all! Today we start off talking about David Roche's Leadville 100 course record that he set on Saturday, breaking a record that has stood since 2005. Also it was David's debut 100 miler which is a bit surprising since he has been around the ultrarunning world for so long. We also go over race results from Leadville, Tamalpa Headlands 50K, Squamish 50/50K, and the Marquette Trail 50/50K. Then we discuss Jim Walmsley's return to UTMB and talk about Harvey Lewis and what he recently accomplished. We go into a discussion on which race is the toughest between Western States 100, Badwater 135, and Bigfoot 200. Then we go over the FKT updates and through runs for Tara Dower, Mike Wardian, and Bronco Billy (Jeff Browning). We end the show looking at some of the video footage of Leadville posted by Matt Choi on his Instagram account. In this episode, I have Eric Kienle back on after one year, this time as the champion of the last man standing at the Mid-State Mile. During this interview, we drilled deep into what Eric truly learned in the past four years from the Mid-State Mile and how it has not only made him a better ultra-runner but more importantly a better person. If you would like to learn more about Eric and his journey as a runner, go back to Episode #27 in my podcast. Below is an excerpt that Eric wrote from his experience after winning the Mid-State Mile. "I ran. I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more.”The Mid-State Mile 2023. I walked away the last person standing, and a new Course Record with 121 loops, 133.1 miles, 41,120ft of gain/loss, for a total time of 41 hours and 20 minutes. This was my 4th year at MidState, and 3rd year of really understanding what it takes to be “out there” for a long time. This race is truly magical. The amount of growth and self-improvement that comes out of its participants is unmatched. I have grown so much over the years with this race from completely clueless, to ego-driven maniac, to being served a piece of humble pie, to being the last runner standing. I approached this race very differently this year, and I tried to simplify it as much as possible. 'How far can I possibly go when there's an aid station every mile?' That was what I played in my head over and over in training. I also learned to be a listener and not a talker. Actions speak louder than words. I chose not to post about goals, or talk about what I planned to do at MidState. I will work harder than anyone else out there, and results will happen organically. MidState is a game of patience and preventative maintenance. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I cooled before I was hot. I took salt before there were cramps. I drank before I needed it. Rinse and repeat. I stayed present and repeated things in my head to keep me present. I'd say 'Who am I in this pain? Who am I at my level of existence of my soul, and energy in the universe? I am not my physical appearance, and my body is not mine. The body is merely a vehicle. The vehicle feels pain, but the soul does not. The soul is driving this vehicle.' I stayed present this entire race. I listened to my coaches and crew. All I had to do is go, and I did. I am so grateful for this race. Thank you to everyone who helped me on this journey." Snowy conditions in the high country weren't enough to stymy blistering times, including a new women's course record that's already being hailed as the greatest single run in our sport's history. To recap the race, Matt Mitchell is joined by Matt Seidel, who also spent the day bouncing around the course from sunup to sundown. They talk about Matt Mitchell's experience crewing and pacing Leah Yingling to a 9th-place finish; what it was like to be in the middle of the elite women's field; trying to wrap their minds around Courtney Dauwalter's performance; and a whole lot more.TOPICS & TIMES:The Matts Do Western States (2:09)Pacing Leah Yingling to F9 (3:14)Why This Race Rules (6:33)Course Conditions (9:27)Forest Hill, the Place to Be (13:05)Tom Evans' Race Tactics (20:36)Anthony Costales, Hell Yea!
