She won the Tiberias Marathon which she called a useful practice run. Her running style and extraordinary pace isn't the first thing one notices. She wears modest clothing and covers her hair while she runs. Her values attracted Adidas to seek her out, joining Lionel Messi, David Beckham and Beyoncé on the roster. For a multinational corporate that usually shies away from G-d and spirituality, this is quite the departure. In this extraordinary episode, Beatie also discusses manifestation as part of the spiritual and psychological preparation.

Adidas brands took notice of this  supermom of 5 young kids who is at the height of her game. Nicknamed Speedy Beatie” , Beatie Deitsch only began running in 2015 in a desperate move to get back into shape after having four children in six years. Deutsch – who in the spirit of modesty dons a head covering, skirt and long-sleeve shirt when she runs – needed to find time to consistently exercise. Training for a marathon was the way she was going to do exactly that. In a test of faith, she showed the same unwavering dedication to her orthodox Jewish lifestyle as she did to her marathon running, and attributes her success to the very dedication that has made her a proud orthodox Jew.Website: www.beatiedeutsch.comInstagram: @marathonmother

Breaking up with gluten was one of the best yet hardest things I've ever had to do. It was a messy breakup, and the split came with a roller coaster of emotions. In Dear Gluten, It's Not Me, It's You, I compare breaking up with gluten to breaking up with a boyfriend. Mr. Gluten, it's over! While breaking up with gluten drummed up feelings of relief, it also created a slew of physical and emotional challenges. Breakups are complex, heartbreaking, and hard to get over. People suffering from a gluten disorder often feel betrayed by their bodies, abandoned by their doctors, and disowned by a society void of empathy for “gluten-free people.”  Dear Gluten, It's Not Me, It's You is a comprehensive guide to breaking up with gluten for good. I take readers on a journey to understand how gluten damages their body (why break up), how they can split with the offensive bad-boy protein (how to break up), and what they need to do to repair their damaged bodies (how to heal and move on). I intertwine how-to advice with both my personal story and gluten “breakup” stories from celebrities I've interviewed including Dana Vollmer (7-time Olympic gold medalist), Beatie Deutsch (champion Israeli marathoner), Dr. Patrick Staropoli (NASCAR competitor), Shannon Ford (2011 Mrs. United States), Nichole Thomas (basketball player and wife of NBA player, Etan Thomas).Support the show (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl8NPB2H4Mf/?igshid=1m9w8d28oarlu&utm_source=fb_www_attr)

Running is a challenge. It’s physically painful and mentally exhausting. It seems like such a natural way to move our bodies, but at the same time it can feel so absurd when there’s no need for us to travel in that way anymore. Like most of us, you’ve been in the middle of a training session or race and thought “Why am I doing this?” And when we aren’t telling ourselves how hard running is, our friends and family are sure to do it for us. “You’re crazy.” “Why don’t you just go to the gym?” “Isn’t running bad for you?” Now that we all agree how difficult running can be, let’s add a few things on top of all that. Suppose you have five children, all demanding your attention and draining your energy resources throughout the day before you get in a workout. Now add working fulltime on top of that. How about running in 85 °F weather? Let’s say you do this with a long skirt, long sleeve shirt, and a headwrap. And by the way, you’re running fast enough to qualify for an Olympic marathon spot.  This is exactly what running is like for Beatie Deutsch. Beatie grew up in New Jersey in an Orthodox Jewish family. Shortly after high school she went to study in Jerusalem. She fell in love with the city and never looked back. Now she lives there with her husband and five children, managing everyday motherhood with working toward her Olympic dream. Beatie left us with some wonderful advice on motherhood, training, and her secret to her success. Read on! Motherhood Advice Beatie considers herself a new runner, with only four years under her belt and already competing on a global level. She really started to take off in the middle of raising her family, and at one point had four children in six years. Like so many of us, being a mother comes first. And although running is now her job, that wasn’t always the case. Balancing work with motherhood and selfcare took everything she had.  There are two pieces of advice Beatie gives to those with kids. “Your kids read off your energy,” says Beatie. She reminds us that kids are resilient, that we don’t need to worry quite as much as we do, and that if you are calm and relaxed, then your kids won’t be as likely to be anxious or stressed either.  Secondly, Beatie says that our kids only have one mom. “Those years go by so quickly, and you don’t get them back,” she says. Whatever stage of child raising you might be in, it’s a great reminder. Take time to watch your children play or fall asleep and take a mental picture. Those moments are precious and rare. Feeling Comfortable as a Woman So much of feeling empowered as a woman today has to do with how we look and what we wear. That isn’t a bad thing! “There’s not just one way for a woman to feel comfortable,” says Beatie, “Beauty is in diversity.” Sometimes it may feel that showing off your body and getting rid of your insecurities about how you look in a bikini or a sports bra is the only way to feel empowered. If that is what makes you feel like a strong woman, then you go for it! This is a simple reminder that empowerment comes from within, with making decisions that you feel confident in no matter who is looking. If that means wearing a tank top, leggings, a hijab, a skirt, a sports bra, or any other thing, then that is beautiful. There isn’t one way to feel beautiful, comfortable, or empowered. You’re Capable of More Than You Know Beatie’s faith has given her a lot of strength in her running. Your ability to get better day after day is much more mental than physical, and working on your self-beliefs can help you get further than you ever thought possible. “Don’t doubt yourself,” says Beatie, “The power of your mind is really incredible.” Beatie’s last advice is to keep taking baby steps, and she means baby steps. When running 200 splits, she’ll often only see 0.2 second improvements week to week, but they are still improvements. Remember, running is a challenge, and each baby step forward should be celebrated. Keep moving forward and find joy in running.   Resources: Beatie on Facebook Beatie on Instagram Beatie’s Website Beatie on “Run Farther and Faster” Beatie on “Ali on the Run” Beit Daniella Nancy Clark Interview Renee McGregor Interview Jennifer Gaudiani Interview   Thank you to my wonderful sponsor Tracksmith, Athletic Greens, and City Fit Girls for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast. Beatie Deutsch, a two-time podcast guest, also known as “Speedy Beatie,” mother of five and the top female marathoner in Israel, recently retained attorney Akiva Shapiro of Gibson Dunn and Crutcher to ensure that she can run in the 2021 Olympic marathon. As Akiva explains, the women’s marathon at the Tokyo games is set for a Saturday in August 2021. The women’s race is typically scheduled for a Sunday, and this is the first time the race has been scheduled on a Saturday. Beatie, who is an Orthodox Jew, observes the Sabbath, and, as a result, she does not run between sundown on Friday and sundown on Saturday. Akiva shares on the podcast why Beatie’s case is important, why the concept of reasonable accommodations for religious beliefs and observances is a well-established principle, and why Beatie is reluctantly and bravely advocating for change. Please share this episode to support Beatie’s efforts to promote her inclusion in the Olympic Games. After having birthed 4 children in 6 years Beatie Deutsch thought she would pick up running in order to get in shape. She was inspired by her husband who recently rode a 180-miles on a bicycle for charity, so she decided she would run a marathon. She trained four days a week for four months and placed SIXITH in the Tel Aviv Marathon! After such success in one race she decided to run again and now has competed in hundreds of races all around the world. Shes even raced at 7 months pregnant and finished 4 hours and 8 minutes and ran another marathon just a few months after giving birth!SHES INCREDIBLE!Although she had never thought about being a professional runner, Beatie realized she was meant to run and she is currently training for the 2020 Olympics.Beatie is an Orthodox Jew. But for her, running isn't separate from her religious beliefs, it's sustained by it. Even when she trains, Beatie maintains her modest attire: her necklines cover her collarbone, her sleeves cover her elbows, and her skirts cover her knees. As a married woman, she always runs in a headscarf that covers her hair. Beatie Deutsch is today’s guest! Beatie was one of my inspirations for starting this podcast. In early 2019, she won the Israeli national marathon championship with a time of 2:42. She made headlines after she won that championship, and a picture of her standing on the podium in her skirt while holding one of her children made running news all over the world. I was amazed at what Beatie had accomplished…in a skirt…and knew as soon as I saw that picture of her that I had to do something to celebrate people like Beatie.  Beatie is 30-years old and a mother of five children. In this episode, Beatie explains why she started running four years ago, how she’s gone from a 3:27 marathon to a 2:32, why she runs in a skirt, and her goals for the future.  Beatie is one of those people who speaks positivity to herself and to others. She doesn’t dwell on negative “what ifs” and instead prefers to concentrate on what she can handle and who is really in control of her life—God. She has had an amazingly successful year, but her rise to professional running is also coinciding with a very tough and strange time for runners. Beatie is currently ranked in the top 80 female marathoners in the world; a ranking that is likely to secure her a spot at the 2020 Olympics. But whether the 2020 Olympics will actually happen is unknown. Races all over the world have been canceled or postponed to help stop the spread of coronavirus. And if the Olympics do happen, it is possible the marathon will be run on a Saturday. As Beatie is religiously observant, Saturday is the Sabbath and she would forego the race. But through these crazy times, and faced with so much unknown, Beatie is remaining calm and positive. Her ambition, hard work, love for her family, and steadfastness to her faith are truly inspirational.   Here is my conversation with Beatie.    (P.S. "I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and discovered this tremendous strength that I had. An aspiring Olympian, Beatie is now sponsored by the Israel government and Nike, and has been featured in countless media outlets for her groundbreaking race times and victories, recently becoming the first Israeli woman to win an international race, in Riga, Latvia. Beatie Deutsch is a champion distance runner. Her story is truly amazing. After getting married at 19, and having 4 children, she realized she had lost the natural fitness of her youth and decided to set her sights on a marathon because it would be a big enough goal to keep her motivated. She ran her first marathon surprisingly fast in 3:27. Two years (and her 5th child) later, she won her first marathon in 3:09. Just a year later, in 2019, she surprised everyone by winning the Israel National Marathon Championships in 2:42 the 5th best result of all time for Israeli women. That’s all amazing, right? Who else wants to PR by 27 minutes? But here’s another cool twist on her story. Beatie is an Orthodox Jew. Her faith anchors her guiding principles, one of which is that she is required to dress modestly. That means covering her body below the knee and through the arms. We all know as athletes that we are often looking for every possible advantage to shave off seconds. This usually includes wearing streamlined clothing, especially at the highest level of elites. One would think that modest clothing would work against that concept. But here’s the deal on Beatie: she wears long skirts and full length sleeves - and it doesn’t hold her back. In fact, her faith is her advantage. As I write this, she is recovering from her first ever 10k on the track which she finished in 35:15 – the 6th fastest time in history for Israeli women. Today we talk about all things Beatie including: Growing up an Orthodox Jew in New Jersey Heading to Israel after high school to study How dating works as an Orthodox Jew How her religion guides her life decisions both big and small What it means to be an Orthodox Jewish runner: What are the requirements & how do they affect her running? Why she started running & her early success What's in the future? Olympics, Ironman & more One of the reasons I do this podcast is to expand my own world, to learn about other people’s experiences, and how they find joy and fulfillment. Beatie’s world is certainly new to me. I don’t have any close friends who practice orthodox judaism, so some of my questions about her background may come off as nosy, but I was truly just curious, especially about things that relate to human relationships. What I love so much about Beatie is this. Many people would look at her faith as something that probably holds her back from achieving her potential. But she sees it as the reason she is able to find happiness and success. As she so succinctly puts it, “Fear holds us back. Belief moves us forward. What do you have to lose?” Hold that question close my friends. What do you have to lose? For more on Beatie Deutsch, the first thing to do is get over to Instagram and follow her at @marathonmother as well as her facebook page. She posts frequently with thoughtful insights that I believe are relevant to all of us as we overcome our challenges and pursue our greatest goals. All right that’s it. Time to turn off the pod and turn on your mojo and get out there and run this world. Have a great workout and I’ll see you next week!
