Kia ora e te whānau. All Matt knew is that he went to Ultra Trail Australia, got home, and then a couple of hours later went to work. What he missed in that very full-on week was a cavalcade of what Men In Blazers' podcast would only describe as sheer ultrarunning shithousery. From the William Goodge trans-Australia beef, to the Avaripa running saga and consequential PR home-run, to whatever the heck Camille was on about, through to Stephanie Gage's win at UltraTrail Snowdonia, and a Sea Slug winning a 200-mile race, Matt asks to be caught up, and boy-howdy is he. This episode has it all. Are the crew getting on in years? Maybe. Does Matt go on about how attractive William Goodge is a bit much? Maybe.  Is Andrew protesting too hard about not finding William Goodge attractive? Also, perhaps, but look. We're not here to split hairs. As a bonus, please enjoy Ali's before and after chat with UTA miler sixth place woman's finisher Dr Charlotte Lomas.  Dirt Church Radio- Best Enjoyed Running--- --- --- Episode Links Sign up to the DCR AidStation newsletterDirt Church Merch! The Squadrun 4-Week Training Trial for DCR Listeners!Dirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on FacebookFurther Faster New ZealandEnjoy!Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake

Kia ora e te whānau. It's always a party in the Blue Mountains. From the out-of-this-world scenery, to the amazing people, to the exceptional country that carries you, the Blue Mountains have it all. Add to this mix the atmosphere and celebration of Ultra Trail Australia being a UTMB world major, and you have a recipe for an incredible time. This year's UTA live special is in three parts. In part one, Ali and Matt speak to UTA miler athletes, Vlad Shatrov, Kellie Angel, and UTA22 guns Ben Duffus and Sara Levett at the first of the DCR live shows. Part two sees Matt head out onto the trails, with the 50km athletes, speaking to Sweep Manager and running legend Jane Trumper, adaptive athlete Mick Marshall, Father and Daughter duo Harry and Jess, and some Fairmont aid station action. We then head to Part 3, where we speak to some of the 50 and 100km runners. We try to crack Dan Jones' media training, we find out that a gorilla has no chance against 100 Caitlin Fielders, we sizzle in Beth McKenzie's laser focus, and dig into  2023 UTA100 winner George Murray's road to redemption in 2025. Kia ora e te whānau. Anyone with a passing relationship with Dirt Church Radio will know that Ultra Trail Australia has wormed it's way firmly into our hearts as one of the must-do events on the planet. That love was deepened when Ali P jumped on board as a co-host in 2024. This week, Matt has the pleasure to speak to Ali and Kerry, the brawn-and-brawn behind Squadrun, about this year's event being one of the three global majors and what to expect both in terms of the courses themselves, with the inclusion of what will be a very challenging 100-mile event. In addition to these course previews, Ali and Kerry bring the executive functioning of a well-stocked spreadsheet to the party in terms of who to watch out for in each distance, whilst  Matt impulsively wants what the heart wants. We can't wait to see you all at the start and finish lines in a couple of weeks, and until then, we hope that this will help fill the UTA-shaped gap. From running on a treadmill in a hot air balloon, to becoming a dad, Reece Edwards is always the first to put his hand up for a new adventure. In this conversation, we talk about his new running life as a dad to Oliver, what dad strength means to Reece and how his perspective on running has changed since his son arrived. Between constant sickness, reduced sleep and balancing family and work life, it's not easy to train at such a high level. But Reece says it's all worth it to be a dad! This episode is part of a mini-series featuring some of our mighty marathon mums (or in this case, dads)! We talk about his recent back-to-back wins at Port Fairy Marathon and what it was like to reel in two Olympians to break the tape at Melbourne Marathon in 2023. We also cover the importance of keeping some “silliness” and fun in Reece's training, why running is better when it's social, his goals for the future (including an outrageous long run), and what it feels like to actually be content with your PBs. -- Reece Edwards is a long and ultra distance runner who came to the sport later in life. He ran 2:13:23 at Rotterdam Marathon in 2021 and has a PB of 1:03:38 in the half marathon, which he ran the same year in Copenhagen. Domestically, he won Melbourne Marathon in 2023 and Port Fairy Marathon in 2024 and 2025. Reece has also been successful on the trails, winning several prestigious events including, Ultra Trail Australia 100k, Tarawera 102k and Berry Long run. My guest today is Lucy Bartholomew. At the young age of only 28, it feels like Lucy is a veteran of Ultrarunning. She did her first 100km run with her dad's supervision at just 15 years old. Since then she has been a regular protagonist in the ultra-running scene. She is competing in the races all over the world. In 2023 she was 10th in the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc) the biggest trail running event in the world. This year she is trying to go faster and improve on her time of 27 hours. Shortly after she competed at the Ironman World Championships in Kona. So you can see she loves a challenge. In the same year, she won the Tarawera Ultramarathon and was 2nd in the Ultra-Trail Australia. Her ever-positive attitude and constant smiling face make her a fan favorite and I'm one of those fans. We talk about the power of a smile and how it can change the world, turning a bad day into a great day and her strategy of nibble nibble sip sip to get through an ultra marathon. Her wanderlust for curiosity and new experiences and the power of connection and community. On today's show, we talk about all this and more, so I think you are going to enjoy listening to Lucy's.So when I saw her training and running around the mountains in my village in the remote French Alps I had to try and get her on the show.As a bonus episode, Lucy stuck around to take the Beyond the Mountains Questionaire to reveal her true mountain character.Hello friends, I am your host Ashley Pettit welcome to another episode of Beyond The Mountains Podcast. Ash had started strong but a wrong turn in the final stages cost him dearly . We talk to Ash about his life spent running, and how what started off as a self-described “selfish” hobby has led to an incredible relationship and many miles shared with Lucy over the years and a ringside seat to her journey as a global ultramarathon star. Ash speaks with fondness how his boys Josh, and now Thomas, have also picked up the running bug, with Josh smashing a 13 hour Ultra Trail Australia, and Thomas soon to undertake his first marathon. Honest, reflective, and humble, this is one conversation that you won't want to miss.  Best Enjoyed Running.

Episode 35!  We welcome back our Episode 31 guest, Jemma Purandare, to (finally!) run us through her trip to Europe and her experience of a long time in the making dream, running - UTMB's CCC, lining up to take on 100kms of brutal trail running through the Alps.  When we spoke to Jemma last, she was on the brink of flying from Australia to Europe to toe the line at this huge race, after months of prep - while also juggling day to day life including work, a PhD and her Law studies. If you haven't listened to Jemma's pre race episode, we highly recommend you jump back to Episode 31 to hear more about Jemma as a person, and specifically her journey to qualifying for CCC. We're not going to give it all away in the show notes but, things didn't exactly go to plan, and altitude sickness and cut off times played a major role in that. If you're curious about what it takes to take on a major mountain race like this, and how it feels when you well and truly hit the pain/altitude sickness/tunnel vision cave - tune in to hear more. Since this experience, Jemma has jumped right back in with her running (with an incredible research/work trip to Mexico thrown in there for good measure) and has raced Ultra Trail Australia 50km, amidst other trail runs. Her determination to keep on keeping on; to learn from her CCC experience and to build into a year of solid 50km races, while also showing enthusiasm to step back onto that CCC start line again is inspiring!  To see beautiful mountain images and to read Jemma's reflections, you can find Jemma online on Instagram at @littlegoatjem If you are keen to help keep the lights on for this podcast, you can support us on Patreon, or you can leave a review on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on like Apple or Spotify. Kia ora e te whānau. The first time we engaged with Australian running legend Vlad Shatrov was way back at Dirt Church Radio number 91. Matt caught up with Vlad after Australia and the world had gone to hell in a handbasket grappling with COVID-19. This time we got the opportunity to sit down with the man himself before he toed the line in the Ultra Trail Australia 100km in October this year. If you'd listened to that episode, or know that man, you'll know that Vlad has done it all, track racing, professional triathlon, marathon, now for several successful years, ultramarathon. At the time of our conversation we discussed the changes that Vlad was making to his coaching business to shift to a virtual platform and what his hopes for the future were, including a shot at the Western States Endurance Run. Fast forward two years and we find Vlad in a reflective space, positive that things are on the up again, his ongoing love of running and his recent victory at The Brisbane Trail Ultra 100. Episode 32! Firstly, apologies if this is a tricky one to listen to sound wise - our recording set up from three remote places didn't go quite to plan and our voices come through at different levels, with Sarah being quiet. The main thing we reckon though is you can still hear Cecilia well, and we hope it's not too annoying to listen to as it's well worth perservering with to hear from "CC at CCC"! We welcome back good friend of the show - Cecilia Mattas, to run us through her recent trip to Europe and how it felt to take on the epic trail race - UTMB's CCC, traversing over 100kms on foot, at speed, through the Alps.  When we last spoke to Cecilia back on Episode 5, she was hot off the back of a win at Ultra Trail Australia 100km. Given COVID restrictions at the time, this opportunity at CCC was Cecilia's first chance to truly race on the world stage and kudos to her as she absolutely crushed it. While Cecilia has an admirable training ethic and inspiring attitude to her running, nothing can be taken for granted when racing such a long distance on such technical terrain at altitude. As ever though, Cecilia, while being crewed by her partner Tom, handled it with joy and grace - and she shares some fantastic insights into the brutal nature of this course and the real prep it requires. Humble and honest as ever, Cecilia shares with us how she'd considered a top 5 finish while signing up for the race, and on having the opportunity to recce the course pre race, realised it was going to be a huge experience and learning curve. Finishing narrowly outside of the top 20 in the female field is a truly incredible achievement for her first CCC and we can't wait to see what she brings in future!  Tune in to hear about Cecilia's race preparation, including taking time out in Europe beforehand to train and see family and friends (and take on a swim run race with Tom); the CCC journey itself - including forgetting a piece of mandatory gear last minute (again!) and the massive toll that a mountain course like this takes on the mind and body. Plus upcoming plans, including Cecilia now crewing for her partner Tom on his first UTA 100km journey! All the best to both of you.  You can find Cecilia on Instagram at @ceciliamattas If you are keen to help keep the lights on for this podcast, you can support us on Patreon, or you can leave a review on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on like Apple or Spotify.Thank you for the continued support from all of our listeners and patrons - we love and appreciate you all!

Kia ora e te whānau. When Troy Sachs was inducted into the Australian Sports Hall of Fame, he was one of just a few disabled athletes to have had the honour bestowed upon them. After playing wheelchair basketball professionally for 20 years, attending 5 Paralympics and winning two gold and one silver medal, Troy felt that he could finally be heralled as “just” Troy. He was there because of his sporting achievements, not because of his disability. This thought-provoking insight is just one of many in this excellent conversation. Troy turned his laser focus to running a few years ago, and since then has completed several ultra distance runs including the Oxfam trailwalker, a 310 kilometre “jog” from Canberra to Sydney and an attempt at the 2021 Ultra Trail Australia. For the ablest of us, running, especially long distances is not simply a matter of “lacing up the running shoes” Troy talks about the challenge of stump care, manufacturing his own carbon blades and having to run with tools for an on-the-go fix. Recovery, advocacy, and a general desire to send it, this conversation with Troy Sachs is a true blue ripper. Enjoy! Episode 19! Leif Christensen joined us in the “studio” while visiting from Adelaide for a chat about what being an everyday adventurer means to him.  Leif shares with us how an exchange program, living in Brazil for a year after leaving school stimulated his interest in experiencing other cultures and places. This passion has seen Leif travel and adventure all over Australia and beyond, both for fun; for fundraising and also for work, as a trained social worker, leading 100km hikes for children while working in an adventure therapy and guide role for Operation Flinders.  Leif since retrained as a firefighter and we chat about how work and adventure tie in together. He shares with us a whole range of missions he has completed including his self-named project “Six Trails for Change”, taking part in ultra distance trail runs, including the Rapid Ascent “Triple Crown”, as well as summiting the 6812m peak Mount Ama Dablam in Nepal and fastpacking the Great Walk on K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island). Leif has been riding motorbikes since he was 18, and attempted a fundraising ride from London to Cape Town, while also recently taking part in the challenging and somewhat quirky “Postie Bike Challenge” riding an old “postie bike” 1000km over four days in the Flinders Ranges and remote Outback South Australia, raising funds for the Apex Copper Coast Retreats, supporting families impacted by cancer.  Leif also shares with us intentions for the year ahead including racing Ultra Trail Australia 100km and climbing Mount Cook in New Zealand.  We finish with a chat about how through working in the fire service, Leif now volunteers with his kelpie, Boston, training as a search and rescue dog as part of the Urban Search and Rescue taskforce. You can find Leif on Instagram at @leif_c  We (…Sarah) apologises for the feature guest - Ness - who was fairly vocal during this interview.  If you're enjoying these episodes and interested in supporting us on Patreon please head across to www.patreon.com/intotheweehourspodcast We are so grateful for every contribution which "helps keep the lights on"!

Lucy Bartholomew is an ultrarunner from Australia. She started ultrarunning at only 15 years old and isn't afraid to pave her own path. Now 25, she's one of the top racers in the world with wins and top performances at some of the sport's most important events. In 2018 Lucy placed 1st for women and created a new course record at Ultra Trail Australia, placed 3rd for women at Western States, and completed many many other races throughout the year. Recently, Lucy set an FKT on the Larapinta Trail -  a 138 mile trail in central Australia. Her race accomplishments are incredible, but Lucy is trailblazing off the race scene too!  She hosts training camps and has a plant-based cookbook called “Sustain Your Ability”!  Lucy has the following quote on her website and I love it: “At the end of this time in my life I don't believe I will remember the wins and the loses but more the people I have met, the messages I have received that say "you have inspired me", "you're a great role model". For me, if sharing my journey and staying true to myself gets one person out of bed in the morning and challenges themselves then every step has been worth it.” We didn't think it was possible to like Lucy Bartholomew more! After spending some time chatting with her, we realized how very special she is.  On this episode Lucy shares with us what life is like on lockdown in Australia and how she is spending her time.  We discuss her first ultra marathon at 15 years old, setting the FKT on the Larapinta Trail (comical hallucinations), her cookbook, Sustain Your Ability, Trail Camp, positive body image and so much more.  We could have talked for hours!  We walked away from this one feeling happy and inspired in many ways.  Hopefully, you will too!  Here is a wise quote from Lucy. “Comparison is the thief of all joy”. This week I have great pleasure in talking with chiropractor, Dr Russell Hanna. There seems to be some misunderstanding in the community about what chiropractors do and how they are trained so we start our chat by dispelling some myths around that.Russell explains how chiropractic treatments, in particular spinal adjustments, work. I was interested to learn about the neurological effect of adjustments. My personal experience as a patient of Russell's has been very positive but I did not really understand how all the prodding, pushing and adjusting worked. Now I have a greater appreciation of how my body responds to treatment. Also, we touch generally on collaboration between allied health professionals such as physiotherapists and chiropractors working in tandem on a patient, and how that can really enhance results. To finish off we talk about one of our shared passions, trail running, although Russell is far more accomplished than I am having recently completed the Ultra-Trail Australia 100km race in the Blue Mountains. It’s an Australian wide network and community for mums who love to, or are interested in, running. While RMA shares many women’s stories, I wanted to turn the tables (and microphone) and Nicole and share her story. She joined me on the podcast in June to discuss: - how she started running as a child and why it appealed to her at that age, - her first marathon, - how being diagnosed with a melanoma (skin cancer) in 2016 changed her perspective and why it’s so important to trust your gut instinct. Nicole is also an ambassador for several running events including Ultra Trail Australia so we discuss whether she feels the weight of expectation of others or pressure to perform as a result of her public profile in the sport. Lucy was my guest on the podcast back in January, 2018 (episode 45). In that episode, Lucy shared her background; how she first started running as a way to spend time with her Dad, her first 100km race at 16 through to her victory in 2017 at the 100km Ultra Trail Australia race (also her 21st birthday). At the time of that episode, Lucy was still getting her head around the news she had secured an entry to the Western States Endurance Run (WSER); not only one of the world’s most prestigious 100mi/160km races, but it would also be Lucy’s first attempt at that distance. So Lucy returns to Sparta Chicks Radio this week to share how the race, and 2018, unfolded for her — including why she labelled her blog post about the race ‘Show Up, Blow Up, Grow Up’. Here’s a #spoileralert - Lucy finished 3rd at WSER this year; an extraordinary performance for someone so young, and racing that distance for the first time, against the best in the world. Dylan spoke to Eugene and Matt from his home base of Colorado and we went deep into his history with the sport, his current period of rebuilding, how he chooses to engage with others to affect change and of course, his love for German Shorthaired Pointers. We even learned about Lacrosse. We just had to ask which direction he prefers his Tarawera, and also why he has such an affinity for the 100 mile distance. As always, we spring the “”Greatest Run Ever” question on Dylan and are blown away by his answer. We were stoked beyond belief to get to spend time with Dylan, who was generous, engaging and candid. Hearing Pip Candrick share her love of trail running, it’s hard to believe she only took up the sport in her late 40s after being diagnosed with brain cancer. To regain her health after treatment, Pip joined a gym that challenged her to set a goal. She picked running a Half Marathon which, she says, ‘…was just ridiculous. I don’t know why it came out of my mouth’. Pip quickly fell in the love with the sport, and discovered a surprising side effect of her long runs. During a long run one day in preparation for her first Half Marathon, she suddenly had memories (she didn’t realise she’d lost) come flooding back. She credits her long runs with ‘restoring her brain’. Since then, Pip’s gone onto finish multiple races including the 100km race at Ultra Trail Australia as well as the Husky Long Course triathlon (a Half Ironman/70.3 distance race). Of course, her recovery and life haven’t been without challenges. Pip experiences seizures and hasn’t (until only recently) been able to head out the door for a run by herself. It’s a freedom she desperately misses. And I can’t help but think it’s something the rest of us - myself included - take for granted. Pip’s story reminds me of the importance of not taking life for granted, of trusting your gut instinct and the power of sports as a vehicle for healing (physically, mentally and emotionally). Australia’s coolest psychologist, Ali Hill is a CEO, sought-after speaker, author, podcaster, mum of 2 and runner. Perhaps it’s no wonder that after being overcome by a tremendous sense of overwhelm 2 years ago, that Ali (as a ‘head mechanic’ to use her words) went on a quest to understand society’s obsession with ‘busy’ and how to live a life filled with meaning, even amongst the busyness. That quest resulted in Ali not only making changes in her own work and life but also writing a fantastic book called ‘Stand Out: A Real World Guide to Get Clear, Find Purpose & Become the Boss of Busy’ and launching one of my favourite podcasts, Stand Out Life. In this conversation, we discuss where her interest in behavioural science and psychology originated from, the fear of failure, how to live a life filled with meaning (even amongst the ‘busy’) and her experience running the 22km race at Ultra Trail Australia this year. It's so easy to get out of the swing of things when you are away from home and then it seems like more of an effort to get back into it when you return, doesn't it? This week I'm talking about some things you can do to keep your habits ticking along when you are away from home: whether it's a running event, a holiday or you are travelling for work. I have a bit of an addictive personality, I think so it's been really easy for me to see trips away in the past as a perfect reason to completely abandon anything I would normally do with my nutrition. But you know what? I choose those things with nutrition because they make me feel good, so it never works out as well as you'd think! I'm heading down to Ultra Trail Australia tomorrow and I talk through some of what I'll be doing to make sure I stay on track, but also make sure it doesn't take away from the experience either!  Learn to Run starts on the 28th May and it will be our last intake of the program until the 6th of August, so don't miss out!

I know what you must be thinking… How does Hanny have anymore to say on the topic of psychology? Haha! Well hear me out for a moment… This episode is very different to previous Find Your Feet Podcast episodes and actually one of the topics that I get asked the most about. In this episode Jess and I discuss the physical, mental and emotional strategies around tapering before a peak performance and psychologically how to maximise your enjoyment on the day itself. A positive mindset and outlook on the day should not be overlooked. For those of you who have been building towards Ultra Trail Australia for the past 6 months, you have done the hard work. When you find your feet on the start line, you need to know that you are emotionally ‘checked-in’ for this event and thinking, ‘how enjoyable can I make this for myself?’ My biggest tip for this is to smile at everyone you see, smile through your low points of suffering and especially through your high points! The Main Points Are: - Tapering – how to navigate the unusual sensations - The physical benefits of rest and recovery before race day - Working through ‘what if…’ scenarios - How to understand the lessons from ‘missions’ & practice runs - Simulate running with a full vest pack of mandatory gear, nutrition and hydration. - Adapting nutrition & hydration for tapering - The importance of briefing your support crew - Race day mentality - Tips to minimise your time spent at aid stations - Setting process goals – be realistic - Starting the race with purpose - not ‘slow’ - Avoid chewing up crucial mental energy worrying and comparing yourself to others or your past capabilities - SMILE! Enjoy yourself. Inevitably you will have points of suffering but if you asked yourself, ‘where else would I rather be?’, the likely answer would be ‘nowhere’. I hope you find this episode a valuable resource towards your own journey with performance. I planned to take a different approach to this topic, but it naturally evolved into this conversation that I am incredibly excited to share with you. The process of creating podcasts is, in some ways, very similar to the journey we take in preparing for and executing adventures. We will only ever reach a certain level of preparedness, so learning how to manage our expectations, define success and checking in with reality becomes increasingly important. If we do not take the time to recognise what success means to us and understand why we value the adventure, and even when we are physically strong enough, our fears and doubts can overcome our positive psychology to derail our performance. This conversation will be incredibly useful to anyone interested in adventures, embarking on an upcoming race, or simply wanting to get the most out of their physical passions. It is also strongly relevant to individuals who are currently following my training programs, preparing for the Ultra Trail Australia or if you are the supporter of a loved one who is embarking on something wild. I hope you enjoy this episode and let me, or the team at Find Your Feet know if you would like any further help towards your preparations for races or missions. Here are some extra resources I would highly recommend you check out: • The earlier podcasts I did with Clive Stack - #03 Driven by Emotions and #11 Listening to Your Emotions • #07 Psychology of Potential with Sports Psychologist Jeremy Adams • #10 Reflections on my UTA100 Experience in 2017 • Also, and just for fun, the video from Dale and I on our epic mission on Federation Peak. Main Points • Define YOUR ‘success’ • Define YOUR ‘readiness’ • Setting expectations and intentions • Purpose of fear – Show you what is meaningful and also that you really care • Missions – Why they are important – Just start… but also when to not do a mission • ‘What If’ Scenarios • Check- in with realism • Get out of your own shoes - Imagine how others are feeling - Elite athletes but don’t experience any less ‘holes’, just get out of them quicker • Make it FUN! • Race Day - Support Crews - Setting your ½ way mark at 75% - Music? - Bubble Mode

I have decided to create this podcast series based upon my newly released Ultra Trail Australia Training Programs and Trail Running Guidebook. Whilst each episode targets athletes using these resources, they should provide informative listening for all athletes or individuals keen to embark on a more active lifestyle. A new episode will be released monthly on Thursdays up until the Ultra Trail Australia event hosted in May 2018! My aim with this series is to support your unique journey, playing to the start line and beyond! Throughout the duration of this series I will be talking with Jess- my friend, colleague and fellow trail runner – specifically with tips to tackle the most common challenges I see amongst the athletes I work with or have trained alongside. I will be sharing stories from my own experiences and busting myths about nutrition & hydration, overtraining and holistic health. I would strongly recommend (if you haven’t already) listening to #17 The Psychological Foundations of Performance. Establishing a clear understanding of why we want to strive for our peak performance is crucial for sustainable training. Are our motives internally or externally driven? Are we nurturing all areas of holistic health whilst working towards our goals? These are important questions that we need to address to reduce the risk of epic burnouts, injury through overtraining and building our sense of self. So, base training! It is the first aspect of physical training that I have included in the guidebook and for very good reason. The term ‘base training’ feels like a bit of an overkill signpost as to what I am suggesting to build your fitness foundations. Take Home Points: - Periodising training is crucial: In order to improve, we do not have to push our bodies to the limits every training session - Playing in the base training phase for a longer period of time will help lower our risk of stress injuries and overtraining - Athletes can reach 80-90% of their maximum ability just from base training alone - Identifying some of the various symptoms of overtraining that we might be overlooking - Base training is the perfect place to come back to for recovery, and sustainable exercising “I have no doubt that someone could get off the couch now and in 6 months time, run 100km. But it’s to the expense at what that is going to do in the long term – and that’s physically and psychologically. I think you can have a much better experience if you try and pick goals in keeping with where you are at and you allow yourself to just enjoy the beauty of base training.”
