What does it actually take to line up at your first trail ultra and not just survive it, but do it right? In this Expert Series episode, we sit down with Ash Daniels, Level 3 Athletics Australia accredited coach, AUTRA endorsed coach, and Australian national 100km team manager, to get into everything road runners need to know before making the jump to trails.Ash starts where most coaches don't: with his own disastrous first attempt at Ultra-Trail Australia, carrying enough kit to survive the weekend and arriving at a checkpoint six hours late. From that experience came a 5-hour PB the following year, a decade-long coaching career, and a very clear philosophy on what actually matters in trail and ultra preparation. In this episode we cover training specificity for trail (and why your marathon prep won't save you), the vert-per-10K metric Ash uses with all his athletes, why he ditched heart rate zones in favor of running power and RPE, what social media consistently gets wrong about electrolytes and high-carb fueling, and a nuanced, honest conversation about where AI fits (and doesn't fit) in coaching.Whether you're eyeing your first 50K or just trail-curious, this one is packed with practical, no-nonsense insight.--Find Ash at journey2ultra.com.au or on Instagram @journey2ultracoachingFollow Bruna: @justbrunathingsFollow Fabi: @endurance_fabiLearn more about the podcast: www.humanendurancepodcast.com

Kia ora e te whānau. We ran away and joined the circus. And it was cool as hell. No, not that dork-fest in the desert, but a true example of community and fellowship at the 2026 Hoka Ultra Trail Australia by UTMB. These are incredible four days in the majesty of the Blue Mountains. Ali and Matt were privileged to lead a brilliant conversation with some of the biggest talents in Trail and Ultra Running on Friday, after the first of our live shows was rained off. We speak with Beth McKenzie, Ruth Croft, Dan Jones, and two-time Leadville champ (and kangaroo victim) Adrian MacDonald. We'll be running down the highs and lows, drama, and hilarity of yapping on the mic during this wonderful week away. We would like to acknowledge every single person who toe'd the line in the 11, 22, 50, 100 km, and 100-mile distances. We appreciate the effort, courage, and sacrifice you and your families made to be here. We think you are very cool and tough, and we can't wait to see you in 2027.Dirt Church Radio—Best Enjoyed Running.--- --- --- Episode Links Ruth CroftBeth McKenzieDan JonesAdrian MacDonaldUltra Trail Australia by UTMBSign up for the DCR AidStation newsletter.Dirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on FacebookFurther Faster New ZealandEnjoy!Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake
So imagine that it's 5am and you're standing in the cold and dark in the Blue Mountains, you're there with 1500 other people. You're carrying all the gear you'll need for the next 24 hours, a headlamp on, and what lays ahead is running 100 kilometres through the beauty that is the Blue Mountains. Up and down the cliffsides, through and across the Megalong, Jamison and Kedumba Valleys. For almost no prize money for those that finish as the first few through, little notoriety outside of this niche community, why do these people do something that appears entirely insane, if not downright dangerous to the normal person. To pursue. To seek. To explore limits, potential, to understand what it is we're truly capable of.And today's guest is a real treat, and one of the very best in the world at not only running really far, but at speeds that would put him at the front of every running group you've ever seen. Adrian MacDonald is one of the world's best ultra distance runners, and it was both a thrill and a pleasure to speak with him in the lead up to him racing in Ultra Trail Australia over the weekend, where he placed third in an astonishing time of 9 hours and 32 minutes to cover 101 kilometres to go with 4400 metres of elevation. So why would I want to speak with an ultra running distance athlete on what is ostensibly a podcast about sustainability and issues like climate change, corporate incentive structures and justice? Because to me the ultra athlete and the sustainability professional are ultimately the same archetype. Both are seeking to shift norms and seek accomplishments well outside of what the current system ill-defines as appropriate and acceptable. The ultra athlete perseveres, as does the sustainability professional. The ultra athlete needs total clarity of purpose to withstand the ups and downs of whatever a course and race will throw at them, as does the sustainability professional. The ultra athlete is a model for those of us seeking change, to do what seems implausible and to practice action with deliberacy, intention and constant attention to all the small details in pursuit of that grand dream.Adrian's story though, even for an ultra athlete, where unusual stories and maverick personalities are the regular, really is something else. A track and road marathon athlete of serious note, Covid upended his Boston Marathon ambitions in 2020, and living in Fort Collins, Colorado, nestled against the Rocky Mountains, he hit the trails. Less than 18 months later he won one of the world's most prestigious ultra marathons - the Leadville 100 - before backing up again 12 months later and also winning another big race in New Zealnd - three from three in his first three ultras. A new star was born. Since then, Adrian's life has shifted from being a regular financial controller at Colorado State University to a sponsored athlete with one of the world's leading apparel and shoe brands, and racing in Europe, across the US, Australia, New Zealand, South America and Africa. What he's achieved is the desired story of every sustainability professional - to work diligently, outside of the limelight, until one day, a largely unpredictable day, shifts how life was and will no longer be how it was again.Speaking with Adrian, being able to spend time with someone of such pedigree, has lit a fire in me. I hope it does the same for you.Support for this episode comes from:Reposit Power - $500 off your solar battery installation. A race that breaks people — and this year, some new challengers. Lin Chen and Antonina Iushina headline a women's race that is shaping up as a genuine international showdown, with UTA veterans like Steph Austin and Emma Timmis ready to make it a fight. On the men's side, Piotr Babis has Brodie convinced he could win the whole thing. He's up against Aleksei Beresnev and Aleksei Tolstenko, both having serious 100-mile pedigree. James and Brodie dig into who has the course knowledge, who has the fitness, and who might just be lining up for a ticket to UTMB.Who are you backing? The marquee race. With a field that matches the hype. Guidu Qin and Guomin Deng headline the international men's field fresh off the Hong Kong 100, but Mike Carroll, Matt Crehan, and Michael Dunstan won't let them have it easy. On the women's side, can the up-and-coming Meg Sinclair and experienced Beth McKenzie take on international stars Katarzyna Dombrowska and Emily Mann? James and Brodie go deep on who can bridge the gap to the internationals, and why this year feels different.Who are you backing? James said it best — he was tingling. The 50K field this year is on another level, stacked on both the men's and women's sides with incredible international runners. Miao Yao. Ruth Croft. Dan Jones. Add most of the best 50km trail athletes in Australia, Demi Caldwell, Kate Avery, Blake Turner, Vlad Ixel (just to name a few), and almost impossible to pick a top three. If there's one race this weekend where the result could genuinely surprise everyone, it's this one. Strap in.Who are you backing? Let us know in the comments!
The rematch is on. Last year's men's race came down to the wire, and the two athletes who made it happen are back. Leo Petterson and Ben Duffus both toe the start line, joined by Nathan Pearce and young guns Patrick Clarke and Elijah Gosby. The women's race is just as compelling, with a three-way showdown between Jess Jason, Bridget Lunn and Katinka Von Elsner-Wellsteed. Throw in Chinese runner Qiong Luo and we have a real race on our hands. James and Brodie break down who's ready, who's a risk, and who could gate-crash the podium on both sides of the race.Who are you backing? Sage Canaday joins Elise for a wide-ranging chat on trail running, YouTube, speaking out on social media, and starting again after major setbacks, including a surviving life-threatening blood clots in both lungs. If you have been running for a while, chances are you are already acquainted with Sage. In addition to his running accolades, Sage is one of the OG running YouTubers with a very successful channel called Vo2 Max Productions. We reflect on some of his earliest vids (hello Nipple Tips!) and how the scene has changed today. We hear about Sage's running career, spanning Cornell University, and his first pro contract as part of the Hansons-Brooks team (which also included a musical side quest), and his long-term partnership with Hoka from 2014 onwards on the roads and the trails. He has a marathon PB of 2:16:52, is a two-time US Olympic Trials qualifier, and placed in the top-20 at Boston and Chicago. On the trails, he is a three-time US National Champion (12km Mountain Running, 100km Trail Running and Trail Marathon events), as well as the 2014 World Long Distance Mountain Running Champion, among many other achievements. In 2021, Sage suffered inconceivable adversity – he was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolism, and soon after, he and his partner Sandi Nypaver lost all their belongings in a devastating house fire in Boulder, Colorado. It has been a long road back for Sage since. But he recently finished seventh at Black Canyon 100K in a performance that he says felt like a return to form. Sage shares what still drives him, now aged 40, and where he hopes running will take him next. Plus: Doping in trail running, the running boom, influencer culture, coaching in the AI era and a life built around adventure. Kim Beckinsale and Alina McMaster, both in their mid-50s, race with Mountain Designs Wild Women, along with their teammates Cass Kimlin and Del Lloyd, who are both over 40. The team made history last year by becoming the first all-female team to win the 450 km Legend Expedition Race along Australia's Great Ocean Road, finishing in 73:09:27 and outracing men half their age. They unpack how women-only team chemistry—less ego, more communication, and strategic towing/help—can be a superpower over multi-day, map-and-compass courses on little sleep. They also share how their training has evolved with age (fewer “flog yourself” sessions, sharper intensity, bigger recovery) and how menopause shows up (heat management, sleep shifts, mood) without slowing performance. Kim and Alina are currently at Expedition Canada 2025, getting ready to tackle a 750+ km trek–bike–paddle course starting September 25. Lucy Bartholomew was just 16 when she completed her first 100km race, after only taking up the sport the year before. By 18, she was the Sky Running Junior World Champion. Then in 2017, on her 21st birthday Lucy won the Ultra Trail Australia 100km race and again proved she was a force to be reckoned with on the international trail running scene with her victory at Ultra Trail Cape Town 100km in December, 2017.And while Lucy's rise in the sport of trail running has been rapid, it hasn't been easy. She has been the subject of much criticism for her decision to take up ultra running at such a young age.
Nicole Bunyon is a trail runner, mum of 3 and founder of Running Mums Australia (RMA).RMA is an Australia-wide network and community for mums who love to, or are interested in, running. You can't go to a running or triathlon event in Australia without seeing a woman sporting their distinctive logo. While RMA shares many women's stories, I wanted to turn the tables (and microphone) and Nicole and share her story. We discuss how she started running as a child and why it appealed to her at that age, her first marathon, how being diagnosed with a melanoma (skin cancer) in 2016 changed her perspective and why it's so important to trust your gut instinct.Nicole is also an ambassador for several running events including Ultra Trail Australia so we discuss whether she feels the weight of expectation of others or pressure to perform as a result of her public profile in the sport.
Australia's coolest psychologist, Ali Hill is a CEO, sought-after speaker, author, podcaster, mum of 2 and runner.Perhaps it's no wonder that after being overcome by a tremendous sense of overwhelm 2 years ago, Ali (as a ‘head mechanic' to use her words) went on a quest to understand society's obsession with ‘busy' and how to live a life filled with meaning, even amongst the busyness. That quest resulted in Ali not only making changes in her own work and life but also writing a fantastic book called ‘Stand Out: A Real World Guide to Get Clear, Find Purpose & Become the Boss of Busy' and launching one of my favourite podcasts, Stand Out Life.In this conversation, we discuss where her interest in behavioural science and psychology originated from, the fear of failure, how to live a life filled with meaning (even amongst the ‘busy') and her experience running the 22km race at Ultra Trail Australia this year.Plus, I turn the tables and ask whether a psychologist -- with all the tools, knowledge and insight she has -- can still experience the Imposter Complex.
Hearing Pip Candrick share her love of trail running, it's hard to believe she only took up the sport in her late 40s after being diagnosed with brain cancer. To regain her health after treatment, Pip joined a gym that challenged her to set a goal. She picked running a Half Marathon which, she says, ‘…was just ridiculous. I don't know why it came out of my mouth'.Pip quickly fell in the love with the sport, and discovered a surprising side effect of her long runs.During a long run one day in preparation for her first Half Marathon, she suddenly had memories (she didn't realise she'd lost) come flooding back. She credits her long runs with ‘restoring her brain'.Since then, Pip's gone on to finish multiple races including the 100km race at Ultra Trail Australia as well as the Husky Long Course triathlon (a Half Ironman/70.3 distance race).Of course, her recovery and life haven't been without challenges.Pip experiences seizures and hasn't (until only recently) been able to head out the door for a run by herself. It's a freedom she desperately misses. And I can't help but think it's something the rest of us - myself included - take for granted.Pip's story reminds me of the importance of not taking life for granted, of trusting your gut instinct and the power of sports as a vehicle for healing (physically, mentally and emotionally).
Lucy was my guest on the podcast back in January, 2018 (episode 45). In that episode, Lucy shared her background; how she first started running as a way to spend time with her Dad, her first 100km race at 16 through to her victory in 2017 at the 100km Ultra Trail Australia race (also her 21st birthday). At the time of that episode, Lucy was still getting her head around the news she had secured an entry to the Western States Endurance Run (WSER); not only one of the world's most prestigious 100mi/160km races, but it would also be Lucy's first attempt at that distance. So Lucy returns to Sparta Chicks Radio in this episode recorded late in 2018 to share how the race, and 2018, unfolded for her — including why she labelled her blog post about the race ‘Show Up, Blow Up, Grow Up'.Here's a #spoileralert - Lucy finished 3rd at WSER that year; an extraordinary performance for someone so young, and racing that distance for the first time, against the best in the world.
Michael Milton knows all about fear, self-doubt, bravery and courage. After losing his leg to bone cancer at the age of 8, he has gone onto become one of Australia's most talented, decorated and all-around athletes. He is a 5x Paralympic Gold Medalist who has competed in 6 Paralympic Games, both in Winter for skiing and in Summer for cycling. Michael is a World Record holder in both speed skiing and for the fastest marathon on crutches who has also summited Kilimanjaro and walked the Kokoda track twice. In this conversation, we discuss what it's like to ski at in excess of 200km/hr (132mph), his experience with fear, self-doubt and the Imposter Complex, why he's entered many races over the years knowing he'll finish last, why you should keep pushing forward when your instinct is telling you to back off and his experience competing in the Ultra Trail Australia 50km race earlier this year.
Ness Hartge is just like you and I. An age group athlete, a busy mum, small business owner and runner. She's also someone who struggled to call herself an “ultra runner” despite having completed 3 x ultra distance events — and hoped she'd finally feel comfortable doing so once she finished her first 100km race at the Ultra Trail Australia 100km in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney in May 2017.Ness has openly shared on social media her struggle with the Imposter Complex. In this conversation we discuss the way the Imposter Complex has shown up in her life, the times it has caused her to doubt herself (including when applying for jobs) and the steps she took that enabled her to line up at the start of the Ultra Trail Australia 100km and know that, as an experienced ultra-runner, she deserved to be there.
Professional ultra runner Lucy Bartholomew ran her first 100k at Surf Coast Century when she was 16. Not because she wanted to be someone, or become someone. She just wanted to run it. And she did – with her dad right there on her shoulder. In this conversation, we talk about the “Ned effect” era, where runners are taking on big challenges to become known, rather than having a more intrinsic motivation. We discuss body image issues which are rife in running and made worse now by social media, and the hardships Lucy faced finding her identity as a young athlete in the public eye. We also ponder whether awareness around eating disorders and under fuelling is getting through to the next wave of runners in the running boom. Hearing Lucy speak will make you want to run trails! She has a contagious positive energy that you can't help but be inspired by. Lucy is currently in Chamonix where she's preparing for her third Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) at the end of August. She hopes to better her 10th place performances from the past two years. -- Lucy Bartholomew is one of Australia's most accomplished ultramarathon and endurance athletes. She's earned podium finishes at several major races, including Ultra‑Trail Australia and the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run. What he missed in that very full-on week was a cavalcade of what Men In Blazers' podcast would only describe as sheer ultrarunning shithousery. From the William Goodge trans-Australia beef, to the Avaripa running saga and consequential PR home-run, to whatever the heck Camille was on about, through to Stephanie Gage's win at UltraTrail Snowdonia, and a Sea Slug winning a 200-mile race, Matt asks to be caught up, and boy-howdy is he. This episode has it all. Are the crew getting on in years? Maybe. Does Matt go on about how attractive William Goodge is a bit much? Maybe. Is Andrew protesting too hard about not finding William Goodge attractive? Also, perhaps, but look. We're not here to split hairs. As a bonus, please enjoy Ali's before and after chat with UTA miler sixth place woman's finisher Dr Charlotte Lomas. Kia ora e te whānau. It's always a party in the Blue Mountains. From the out-of-this-world scenery, to the amazing people, to the exceptional country that carries you, the Blue Mountains have it all. Add to this mix the atmosphere and celebration of Ultra Trail Australia being a UTMB world major, and you have a recipe for an incredible time. This year's UTA live special is in three parts. In part one, Ali and Matt speak to UTA miler athletes, Vlad Shatrov, Kellie Angel, and UTA22 guns Ben Duffus and Sara Levett at the first of the DCR live shows. Part two sees Matt head out onto the trails, with the 50km athletes, speaking to Sweep Manager and running legend Jane Trumper, adaptive athlete Mick Marshall, Father and Daughter duo Harry and Jess, and some Fairmont aid station action. We then head to Part 3, where we speak to some of the 50 and 100km runners. We try to crack Dan Jones' media training, we find out that a gorilla has no chance against 100 Caitlin Fielders, we sizzle in Beth McKenzie's laser focus, and dig into 2023 UTA100 winner George Murray's road to redemption in 2025. Kia ora e te whānau. Anyone with a passing relationship with Dirt Church Radio will know that Ultra Trail Australia has wormed it's way firmly into our hearts as one of the must-do events on the planet. That love was deepened when Ali P jumped on board as a co-host in 2024. This week, Matt has the pleasure to speak to Ali and Kerry, the brawn-and-brawn behind Squadrun, about this year's event being one of the three global majors and what to expect both in terms of the courses themselves, with the inclusion of what will be a very challenging 100-mile event. In addition to these course previews, Ali and Kerry bring the executive functioning of a well-stocked spreadsheet to the party in terms of who to watch out for in each distance, whilst Matt impulsively wants what the heart wants. We can't wait to see you all at the start and finish lines in a couple of weeks, and until then, we hope that this will help fill the UTA-shaped gap. From running on a treadmill in a hot air balloon, to becoming a dad, Reece Edwards is always the first to put his hand up for a new adventure. In this conversation, we talk about his new running life as a dad to Oliver, what dad strength means to Reece and how his perspective on running has changed since his son arrived. Between constant sickness, reduced sleep and balancing family and work life, it's not easy to train at such a high level. But Reece says it's all worth it to be a dad! This episode is part of a mini-series featuring some of our mighty marathon mums (or in this case, dads)! We talk about his recent back-to-back wins at Port Fairy Marathon and what it was like to reel in two Olympians to break the tape at Melbourne Marathon in 2023. We also cover the importance of keeping some “silliness” and fun in Reece's training, why running is better when it's social, his goals for the future (including an outrageous long run), and what it feels like to actually be content with your PBs. -- Reece Edwards is a long and ultra distance runner who came to the sport later in life. He ran 2:13:23 at Rotterdam Marathon in 2021 and has a PB of 1:03:38 in the half marathon, which he ran the same year in Copenhagen. Domestically, he won Melbourne Marathon in 2023 and Port Fairy Marathon in 2024 and 2025. Reece has also been successful on the trails, winning several prestigious events including, Ultra Trail Australia 100k, Tarawera 102k and Berry Long run. My guest today is Lucy Bartholomew. At the young age of only 28, it feels like Lucy is a veteran of Ultrarunning. She did her first 100km run with her dad's supervision at just 15 years old. Since then she has been a regular protagonist in the ultra-running scene. She is competing in the races all over the world. In 2023 she was 10th in the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc) the biggest trail running event in the world. This year she is trying to go faster and improve on her time of 27 hours. Shortly after she competed at the Ironman World Championships in Kona. So you can see she loves a challenge. In the same year, she won the Tarawera Ultramarathon and was 2nd in the Ultra-Trail Australia. Her ever-positive attitude and constant smiling face make her a fan favorite and I'm one of those fans. We talk about the power of a smile and how it can change the world, turning a bad day into a great day and her strategy of nibble nibble sip sip to get through an ultra marathon. Her wanderlust for curiosity and new experiences and the power of connection and community. On today's show, we talk about all this and more, so I think you are going to enjoy listening to Lucy's.So when I saw her training and running around the mountains in my village in the remote French Alps I had to try and get her on the show.As a bonus episode, Lucy stuck around to take the Beyond the Mountains Questionaire to reveal her true mountain character.Hello friends, I am your host Ashley Pettit welcome to another episode of Beyond The Mountains Podcast. Where I talk to people who live, work and play in the mountains.Let's start the intro music and get on with the show. Allons-y

Led by a former IRONMAN World Champion turned coach, Michellie Jones, this community offers invaluable guidance and unwavering support for all women preparing for an IRONMAN event. From exclusive content tailored to improve race readiness, to immersive FulGaz group rides, weekly workouts, enriching webinars and lively Facebook chats. Tim chats to Dr Kate Baldwin of Valere Endurance about the psychological and physical processes of healing from an injury. We explore the complexities of injury recovery emphasizing the difficulty in managing expectations during the healing process. We discuss the misconception that pain and function improve simultaneously and linearly, and how this can lead to disappointment when progress doesn't match expectations. We highlight that while initial recovery may bring rapid improvement, progress often slows down, and setbacks can occur, which is a normal part of the healing journey. We stress the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when dealing with fractures and other common injuries in endurance athletes, involving sports doctors, physiotherapists, coaches and nutritionists. Additionally, we consider the potential pitfalls of rushing back into activity and the consequences of reintroducing running too soon. We review the racing from the WTCS race at Cagliari and discuss how that now affects the lineup for Paris 2024. (0:00:00) – Bev's off to Korea with Jack Moody for the Challenge Korea full distance. Kia ora e te whānau. This week by popular demand Eugene and Matt speak to Ash Bartholomew, who triggered a worldwide explosion of “it's suddenly being very dusty in here” as he rolled into the Placer Track at the end of the Western States Endurance Run two minutes over the 30 hour cut off accompanied by his daughter, Lucy (yes, that Lucy). Ash had started strong but a wrong turn in the final stages cost him dearly . We talk to Ash about his life spent running, and how what started off as a self-described “selfish” hobby has led to an incredible relationship and many miles shared with Lucy over the years and a ringside seat to her journey as a global ultramarathon star. Ash speaks with fondness how his boys Josh, and now Thomas, have also picked up the running bug, with Josh smashing a 13 hour Ultra Trail Australia, and Thomas soon to undertake his first marathon. Honest, reflective, and humble, this is one conversation that you won't want to miss. Best Enjoyed Running.
