An audience with Counterculture Godfather & Punk Publisher V. Vale hosted by Beatie Wolfe and Aaron Rose on Sunday April 16th at The Aster, Los Angeles. Listen to this OJ special x LA event celebrating the life and work of one of this world's true originals: RE/Search founder V. Vale – described as the first (and last!) punk publisher! After launching San Francisco's first punk zine Search & Destroy in 1977 with $100 each from Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Vale founded RE/Search in 1980 for his other cultural-anthropological explorations including Industrial music, the writings of J.G. Ballard and William S. Burroughs, feminism, “Incredibly Strange” filmmaking and so much more. A cornerstone of the counterculture movement, Vale's influence remains both all-pervasive and yet hidden in plain sight. This event includes a conversation between Vale, Aaron Rose and Beatie Wolfe; a live DJ set from Money Mark on tape cassettes; a reading of Vale's cat haikus and “Goals for Life” and a live performance from Vale and Marian. Beatie Wolfe is a musician and artist, who has in her time been described as a ‘musical weirdo and visionary' and one of the ‘22 people changing the world'. In a relatively short career she has: created a 3D interactive album app and a musical jacket; worked in the world's quietest room to develop an ‘anti-stream'; fired her music into space; made a documentary with the Barbican; designed an environmental protest piece, entitled From Green to Red, which was shown at the Nobel Prize Summit; worked with people suffering from dementia; and recorded a track for a 12 inch record made of bioplastic, alongside Michael Stipe. Her latest project, Imprinting: The Artist's Brain, was on show as part of the recent London Design Biennale at Somerset House, and is a 'sonic self-portrait' that involves old-school telephones as well as a thinking cap designed by an iconic tailor. The theme running through all this is her desire to 're-materialise' music and give it back a sense of ‘tangibility and ceremony'. In this episode we discuss: keeping space rock in her pocket; her latest project at the London Design Biennale; being self-critical as a child; writing her first songs aged nine; working with renowned tailor Mr Fish; the importance of collaboration; sending her music into space; finding the balance between innovation and tradition; her childhood desire to be a ninja; being in a grunge band; the power of art; and the importance of neurologist Oliver Sacks to her career. Presented as part of ON AIR LA ANNEX, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh and “musical weirdo and visionary” Beatie Wolfe discuss the art of composition, building worlds, and how being a conceptual artist can further open up and inform these spaces. Straddling multidisciplines, the pair also revisit Postcards for Democracy, their 2020 collective art campaign in support of USPS, and chat about its impact and how they are still receiving cards today ahead of the next election. This program is part of New Music USA's web magazine NewMusicBox “Guest Editor series”, which aims to celebrate a plurality of voices from across the nation and will feature exclusive content written, produced, or commissioned by a rotating artist or organization. Artistic visionaries Mark Mothersbaugh & Beatie Wolfe share a love of tangible artforms, in and amongst their futuristic explorations. In the summer of 2020, in light of the threat to our 225yr old postal service and at a time that could jeopardize the democracy of the country, Mothersbaugh and Wolfe joined forces for this collective postcard art demonstration. The aim of this campaign is to encourage as many people as possible to support USPS, our right to vote, and democracy as a whole via the power of art. The demonstration asks you to buy USPS stamps, design your postcard and then mail it to 8760 Sunset Blvd. The pair has so far received tens of thousands of postcards from all over the world which were exhibited at the Rauschenberg Gallery and have also been archived by the Smithsonian.

“You're a PowerPoint slide. And anything you do is either contributing to your message or distracting from it.” When most of us think of hand gestures, we might have a few rude ones in mind, but studies tell us that hand gestures are crucial for both the presenter's recall AND the audience's accurate perception of the message being delivered. René gives us concrete examples of how to use our body and especially our hands to take our influence to the next level. But what about the over-expressers? René has you covered too as he outlines the concept of the Influence Zone and how staying inside of it can take you from overbearing to outstanding. Whether you're born to hand jive or always keeping one hand in your pocket, this episode will help you break out of your shell and into the influence zone. Don't miss it! Beatie Deutsch, elite marathon runner, Israel's three-time national champion, Olympic and world championships hopeful, face of the Adidas Impossible is Nothing campaign - and orthodox charedi mother of five. She won the Tiberias Marathon which she called a useful practice run. Her running style and extraordinary pace isn't the first thing one notices. She wears modest clothing and covers her hair while she runs. Her values attracted Adidas to seek her out, joining Lionel Messi, David Beckham and Beyoncé on the roster. For a multinational corporate that usually shies away from G-d and spirituality, this is quite the departure. In this extraordinary episode, Beatie also discusses manifestation as part of the spiritual and psychological preparation.

Guest: Beatie Wolfe, Singer, Songwriter, Technologist (Photo: Ross Harris) In this episode, Beatie Wolfe takes us through her creative journey to become the technologist and artist she is today. Back when she was 7 or 8, she began to imagine the “music books” (album covers) that she wanted over music and moved to reimagine the vinyl experience in her later work. She shares her journey through projects like “Raw Space” (the anti-stream in the more quiet room in the world). She also discussed “From Green to Red,” which she created for this year's London Design Biennale, and “Postcards from Democracy” with Mark Mothersbough that will be a Featured Session at March 2021's SXSW Online. As hectic as life is to be a mother, wife, and train for elite races, Beatie somehow juggles it all with the help of her family, coaches, and Instagram fans. Her goal is to run in the 2021 Olympics for Israel, and are rooting for her! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Some conversations are less about answers and more about the questions. Getting to ‘the why' of an issue. And sometimes those questions, those ‘whys' open the door to unexpected discoveries that give rise to even more questions. That's how I would describe my conversation with today's guest, artist Beatie Wolfe.I was introduced to Beatie's work at her retrospective at London's Victoria and Albert museum and to say I was blown away is an understatement. Beatie isn't solely a musician, she's a tech innovator, a scientist, an artist - she's sent her music into space, played in the quietist room on earth, she's contributed to pioneering Dementia research, she's the first person to use live 360 VR in her music, created an environmental protest piece using 800,000 yrs of Nasa data the list goes on, if I were to tell you all of it it would sound like I'm reeling off an impressive CV. Yet what I find more impressive isn't actually what she's achieved (albeit incredible) it's her curiosity and what I would call a very simple yet deeply rooted conviction about the power of music - it's those questions that I was telling you about. And it's from that questioning that Beatie has innovated, challenged, pioneered and for people like me, really inspired. We talk about the ‘why' of music, its importance, its value, its ability to heal, to connect us, what Beatie calls ‘music as medicine' and the conditions needed to ensure that it (again to quote Beatie) ‘imprints'. Running is a challenge. It’s physically painful and mentally exhausting. It seems like such a natural way to move our bodies, but at the same time it can feel so absurd when there’s no need for us to travel in that way anymore. Like most of us, you’ve been in the middle of a training session or race and thought “Why am I doing this?” And when we aren’t telling ourselves how hard running is, our friends and family are sure to do it for us. “You’re crazy.” “Why don’t you just go to the gym?” “Isn’t running bad for you?” Now that we all agree how difficult running can be, let’s add a few things on top of all that. Suppose you have five children, all demanding your attention and draining your energy resources throughout the day before you get in a workout. Now add working fulltime on top of that. How about running in 85 °F weather? Let’s say you do this with a long skirt, long sleeve shirt, and a headwrap. And by the way, you’re running fast enough to qualify for an Olympic marathon spot. This is exactly what running is like for Beatie Deutsch. Beatie grew up in New Jersey in an Orthodox Jewish family. Shortly after high school she went to study in Jerusalem. She fell in love with the city and never looked back. Now she lives there with her husband and five children, managing everyday motherhood with working toward her Olympic dream. Beatie left us with some wonderful advice on motherhood, training, and her secret to her success. Read on! Motherhood Advice Beatie considers herself a new runner, with only four years under her belt and already competing on a global level. She really started to take off in the middle of raising her family, and at one point had four children in six years. Like so many of us, being a mother comes first. And although running is now her job, that wasn’t always the case. Balancing work with motherhood and selfcare took everything she had. There are two pieces of advice Beatie gives to those with kids. “Your kids read off your energy,” says Beatie. She reminds us that kids are resilient, that we don’t need to worry quite as much as we do, and that if you are calm and relaxed, then your kids won’t be as likely to be anxious or stressed either. Secondly, Beatie says that our kids only have one mom. “Those years go by so quickly, and you don’t get them back,” she says. Whatever stage of child raising you might be in, it’s a great reminder. Take time to watch your children play or fall asleep and take a mental picture. Those moments are precious and rare. Feeling Comfortable as a Woman So much of feeling empowered as a woman today has to do with how we look and what we wear. That isn’t a bad thing! “There’s not just one way for a woman to feel comfortable,” says Beatie, “Beauty is in diversity.” Sometimes it may feel that showing off your body and getting rid of your insecurities about how you look in a bikini or a sports bra is the only way to feel empowered. If that is what makes you feel like a strong woman, then you go for it! This is a simple reminder that empowerment comes from within, with making decisions that you feel confident in no matter who is looking. If that means wearing a tank top, leggings, a hijab, a skirt, a sports bra, or any other thing, then that is beautiful. There isn’t one way to feel beautiful, comfortable, or empowered. You’re Capable of More Than You Know Beatie’s faith has given her a lot of strength in her running. Your ability to get better day after day is much more mental than physical, and working on your self-beliefs can help you get further than you ever thought possible. “Don’t doubt yourself,” says Beatie, “The power of your mind is really incredible.” Beatie’s last advice is to keep taking baby steps, and she means baby steps. When running 200 splits, she’ll often only see 0.2 second improvements week to week, but they are still improvements. Remember, running is a challenge, and each baby step forward should be celebrated. Keep moving forward and find joy in running. Beatie Deutsch, a two-time podcast guest, also known as “Speedy Beatie,” mother of five and the top female marathoner in Israel, recently retained attorney Akiva Shapiro of Gibson Dunn and Crutcher to ensure that she can run in the 2021 Olympic marathon. As Akiva explains, the women’s marathon at the Tokyo games is set for a Saturday in August 2021. The women’s race is typically scheduled for a Sunday, and this is the first time the race has been scheduled on a Saturday. Beatie, who is an Orthodox Jew, observes the Sabbath, and, as a result, she does not run between sundown on Friday and sundown on Saturday. Akiva shares on the podcast why Beatie’s case is important, why the concept of reasonable accommodations for religious beliefs and observances is a well-established principle, and why Beatie is reluctantly and bravely advocating for change. Please share this episode to support Beatie’s efforts to promote her inclusion in the Olympic Games. After having birthed 4 children in 6 years Beatie Deutsch thought she would pick up running in order to get in shape. She was inspired by her husband who recently rode a 180-miles on a bicycle for charity, so she decided she would run a marathon. She trained four days a week for four months and placed SIXITH in the Tel Aviv Marathon! After such success in one race she decided to run again and now has competed in hundreds of races all around the world. Shes even raced at 7 months pregnant and finished 4 hours and 8 minutes and ran another marathon just a few months after giving birth!SHES INCREDIBLE!Although she had never thought about being a professional runner, Beatie realized she was meant to run and she is currently training for the 2020 Olympics.Beatie is an Orthodox Jew. But for her, running isn't separate from her religious beliefs, it's sustained by it. Even when she trains, Beatie maintains her modest attire: her necklines cover her collarbone, her sleeves cover her elbows, and her skirts cover her knees. As a married woman, she always runs in a headscarf that covers her hair. She feels empowered by the idea that female athletes don't have to expose their bodies to win championships.Connect with BeatieFacebookInstagram WebsiteTwitterThank you to this episode's sponsor Uri Arnson Wedding Photography. Beatie Deutsch is today’s guest! Beatie was one of my inspirations for starting this podcast. In early 2019, she won the Israeli national marathon championship with a time of 2:42. She made headlines after she won that championship, and a picture of her standing on the podium in her skirt while holding one of her children made running news all over the world. I was amazed at what Beatie had accomplished…in a skirt…and knew as soon as I saw that picture of her that I had to do something to celebrate people like Beatie. Beatie is 30-years old and a mother of five children. In this episode, Beatie explains why she started running four years ago, how she’s gone from a 3:27 marathon to a 2:32, why she runs in a skirt, and her goals for the future. Beatie is one of those people who speaks positivity to herself and to others. She doesn’t dwell on negative “what ifs” and instead prefers to concentrate on what she can handle and who is really in control of her life—God. She has had an amazingly successful year, but her rise to professional running is also coinciding with a very tough and strange time for runners. Beatie is currently ranked in the top 80 female marathoners in the world; a ranking that is likely to secure her a spot at the 2020 Olympics. But whether the 2020 Olympics will actually happen is unknown. Races all over the world have been canceled or postponed to help stop the spread of coronavirus. And if the Olympics do happen, it is possible the marathon will be run on a Saturday. As Beatie is religiously observant, Saturday is the Sabbath and she would forego the race. But through these crazy times, and faced with so much unknown, Beatie is remaining calm and positive. Her ambition, hard work, love for her family, and steadfastness to her faith are truly inspirational. Here is my conversation with Beatie. (P.S. When Beatie Deutsch signed up for her first marathon in October 2015, she wasn’t even a regular runner. Over the next four months of training for this first race, it became clear to her that she had, as she explains ‘been giving the gift of running.’ She went on to place as the 6th woman to finish the Tel Aviv marathon in early 2016, and kept on running and training hard over the past three years since. Today, she has placed first in major marathons. She's got her eyes set on running the marathon in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (!!!) representing the nation of Israel. The inspiration that has driven her is incredibly powerful, and the lessons she’s learned along her journey are poised to inspire anyone. Beatie Wolfe has beamed her music into space, been designated a UN role model for innovation, done groundbreaking research on the power of music for people with dementia, created the world’s first live 360 AR ‘anti-stream’ from the quietest room on earth, and is the subject of new documentary commissioned by the Barbican directed by Ross Harris. Beatie Wolfe is an Anglo-American singer songwriter with an acoustic indie rock sound. Described by GQ as "smoky captivating melodies” and by Highsnobiety as “timeless romantic song-craft, Wolfe's music pulls from the brooding poeticism of Leonard Cohen, the tender haunting melodies of Elliott Smith and often veers into Americana territory.” Wolfe's live show has been hailed as "breathtaking" (The New York Times) and “a profound delivery of depth and soul” (BBC) Named by WIRED Magazine as one of "22 people changing the world,” Beatie Wolfe is at the forefront of pioneering new formats for music, which reunite tangibility, storytelling and ceremony to the album in this digital age. In this vein, Wolfe has created a series of world’s-first designs that bridge the physical and digital, including: a 3D vinyl for the palm of your hand; an intelligent album deck of cards; a wearable record jacket - cut by the tailor who dressed Bowie and Hendrix out of fabric woven with Wolfe’s music - and most recently the world's first live 360 AR stream from the quietest room on earth and a Space Beam via the Big Bang Horn Wolfe’s work has been featured in the world’s leading museums (including a major solo exhibition at the V&A Museum), festivals, conferences and received nominations across the music, tech and art fields. Forbes calls Wolfe "an Artist with a capital A" for mixing her music with art, technology and science and taking it to entirely new dimensions. Wolfe is also the co-founder of a “profound” (The Times) research project looking at the power of music for people living with dementia In this episode listen in as Alex Doman sits down with Beatie in her Los Angeles home to explore her story so far, and what is unfolding, including her new album with Linda Perry. ABOUT THIS EPISODE Beatie Deutsch is not only the "fastest woman in Israel," but also the fastest to attribute her success to the One Above. As an Orthodox woman and mother of five, Beatie transcends stereotypes and is on a mission to transform public perception of what the women of her community can accomplish, while preserving and promoting her most sacred values. An aspiring Olympian, Beatie is now sponsored by the Israel government and Nike, and has been featured in countless media outlets for her groundbreaking race times and victories, recently becoming the first Israeli woman to win an international race, in Riga, Latvia. She does it all in traditional garb, and a very un-traditional approach to spreading Jewish awareness. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. Beatie Deutsch is a champion distance runner. Her story is truly amazing. After getting married at 19, and having 4 children, she realized she had lost the natural fitness of her youth and decided to set her sights on a marathon because it would be a big enough goal to keep her motivated. She ran her first marathon surprisingly fast in 3:27. Two years (and her 5th child) later, she won her first marathon in 3:09. Just a year later, in 2019, she surprised everyone by winning the Israel National Marathon Championships in 2:42 the 5th best result of all time for Israeli women. That’s all amazing, right? Who else wants to PR by 27 minutes? But here’s another cool twist on her story. Beatie is an Orthodox Jew. Her faith anchors her guiding principles, one of which is that she is required to dress modestly. That means covering her body below the knee and through the arms. We all know as athletes that we are often looking for every possible advantage to shave off seconds. This usually includes wearing streamlined clothing, especially at the highest level of elites. One would think that modest clothing would work against that concept. But here’s the deal on Beatie: she wears long skirts and full length sleeves - and it doesn’t hold her back. In fact, her faith is her advantage. As I write this, she is recovering from her first ever 10k on the track which she finished in 35:15 – the 6th fastest time in history for Israeli women. Today we talk about all things Beatie including: Growing up an Orthodox Jew in New Jersey Heading to Israel after high school to study How dating works as an Orthodox Jew How her religion guides her life decisions both big and small What it means to be an Orthodox Jewish runner: What are the requirements & how do they affect her running? Why she started running & her early success What's in the future? Olympics, Ironman & more One of the reasons I do this podcast is to expand my own world, to learn about other people’s experiences, and how they find joy and fulfillment. Beatie’s world is certainly new to me. I don’t have any close friends who practice orthodox judaism, so some of my questions about her background may come off as nosy, but I was truly just curious, especially about things that relate to human relationships. What I love so much about Beatie is this. Many people would look at her faith as something that probably holds her back from achieving her potential. But she sees it as the reason she is able to find happiness and success. As she so succinctly puts it, “Fear holds us back. Belief moves us forward. What do you have to lose?” Hold that question close my friends. What do you have to lose? For more on Beatie Deutsch, the first thing to do is get over to Instagram and follow her at @marathonmother as well as her facebook page. She posts frequently with thoughtful insights that I believe are relevant to all of us as we overcome our challenges and pursue our greatest goals. All right that’s it. Time to turn off the pod and turn on your mojo and get out there and run this world. Have a great workout and I’ll see you next week!
“When what you do is what you love it’s just wonderful doing that.” That was the start of my conversation with Beatie Wolfe – a musician, storyteller and an innovator. Beatie always had a deep love of music, art, design and storytelling – creativity in every sense. She started writing songs at the age of seven. Also at that time, she found her parents’ vinyl collection. For her, these were musical books – a tangible gateway into the world of the album. From then on, for Beatie, the music and its tangible and visual experiences were interconnected. That’s how for her debut album 8ight she created a pioneering 3D Interactive Album App and also created a ‘Palm Top Theatre’ – a modern rendition of the 1980s viewfinder – on which you could watch 8ight’s interactive visuals filmed by Weavers Productions. From then on, a technologically advanced portfolio of projects followed: The Montagu Square Musical Jacket, world’s first NFC Album Deck, beaming her album Raw Space into space as well as creating the world’s first live 360° AR experience, produced in collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs and Design I/O. Listen to our conversation to find out more about Beatie's music, her multi-disciplinary innovations and her wish to foster daily 'ceremonies' and our connections with one another. Beatie Wolfe has something to prove — to herself, perhaps, but to all of us — about the way music moves us and about how the way we experience it matters. She’s not content to make music and release it the way everyone else does; her releases are events, whether live streaming from the world’s most silent room or turning a song into a jacket or a set of cards. We sat down to talk about what drives her to go to such lengths, and why it’s important that you never pay her a compliment. In this episode, we speak to the singer/songwriter Beatie Wolfe. Beatie has built a reputation as an innovator - she combines music with technology and, last year, she was named in Wired magazine's people changing the world. Importantly for us though, she's a huge Elliott Smith fan. Such a big fan, in fact, that she's written a song - called Little Moth - in tribute to him and had it beamed into space (yes, really). So, in this episode we speak about her favourite song, how she got into Elliott's work and why her moth analogy works. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Renn Faire out in California several years ago. Funny, quirky, very talented and full of life. It was easy to see why people loved him and so very hard to grasp how someone like him could take his own life. But that's the problem with depression.
