Today I'm grateful to be joined by my very good friend Darren Scanlon, a man who turned his life around and is now living proof of the power of determination and community. Darren opens up about how he faced the harsh reality that if he didn't change his health, drinking habits, and lifestyle, he wouldn't live long enough to see his kids grow up. That realization sparked his journey to transformation. He found inspiration through Andy Ramage's One Year No Beer and joined several hiking groups, where he built strong connections and found his tribe. These communities were key in helping him stay sober and rebuild his life. Today, Darren is eight years sober and thriving. He even ran the Dublin Marathon in 2024, proving that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible. This episode is about resilience, mental health, personal growth, and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who lift you up. You can follow Darren and his inspiring journey on Instagram at @the_sober_hiker. Michael points to a broad public retrofitting scheme as one measure that would have used the billions for transformation. Rory is also joined by Mike Allen of Focus Ireland who highlights how shockingly there was not one mention of homelessness in the Budget, and no increase in funding for preventing homelessness. We also discuss the socially divisive narrative spread by the Taoiseach and others that are trying to deflect attention away from Government policy failure and blame immigrants and others vulnerable for homelessness. We highlight how asylum seekers are not included in the homeless numbers the Taoiseach references, how the majority of people presenting as homeless are doing so due to evictions from the private rental sector or household breakdown (which is often hidden homelessness). We also discuss the policy origins of homelessness -from the shift from direct social housing building to HAP, discrimination in the private rental sector, and failure of Government to provide renter protections. Darren has been spending time with some bad influences and it's having a knock on effect on the podcast as he brings a new, tough attitude to the studio and a refusal to accept any and all criticism. There's some rejection of very good advice and severe butchering of motivational quotes. And Joe accepts a listener's challenge and formally announces he will run the Dublin Marathon, but will not be adhering to conventions around things like registering or paying to run on what he sees as his streets.
