Moose goes Loose on the last-minute announcement of the Australian Marathon Championships to be held at the Sydney Marathon on Sunday 18th September, in less than two weeks time at time of recording.   Sprinter and founder of The Resilience Project Hugh van Cuylenberg joins Brady on a varied and interesting conversation, chatting about finding sprinting as a 38 year old and rekindling his passion for athletics from his days as a junior before pursuing cricket. Hugh chats about running fits into his life, and the benefits that come with it and his occasional forays in longer distances, before recounting how he came into contact with Catriona Bisset and her training squad, awestruck by the quality of athletes training. He evaluates his relationship with coach Peter Fortune, learning the culture of athletics and their training squads coming over from team sports, and the tenuous relationship with athletics in mainstream media, as well as how it's changed over the years and lamenting some aspects such the lack of pathways and social support.     248: Birmingham Commonwealth Games Marathon Brad struggles with a sore throat. Julian finds a brief appreciation for parenting and spends time with the new puppy. Brady learns the hard way why you should always change the batteries in a GoPro. Jessica Stenson won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games Marathon running 2:27:31 on the streets of Birmingham adding to her two bronze medals from the previous games at Glasgow and Gold Coast. Teammates Eloise Wellings and Sinead Diver who ran with Jess in the main pack for a significant portion of the race finished fourth and fifth respectively. Margaret Muruiki of Kenya and defending champion Helalia Johannes of Namibia rounded out the podium. Official Women's Marathon Results Liam Adams took the race on in the men's marathon, leading for over the first half of the race before Victor Kiplangat of Uganda and the then-chasing pack broke the race open, Kiplangat winning in 2:10:55.     246: World Champs Week 1 Sean Quilty, Olympian and international representative at multiple world championships and Commonwealth Games with personal bests of 1:02:16 in the half marathon and 2:13:32 in the marathon passed away on Saturday 16th July 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Sean is also remembered as a lifetime athlete, and prominent figure of the Victorian Athletic League. Athletics Australia Obituary Brad's still recovering from the Gold Coast Marathon. Julian gets hyped for this week's race at Bundoora Park. Brady loosens his shoulders before getting lost on his long run. World Athletics Championships in Eugene saw a lot of strong performances from plenty of Aussies, starting with the Women's 1500m where at the time of recording Georgia Griffith & Jessica Hull advanced to final while Linden Hall faced a fast semifinal to finish 4:04.65 Amy Cashin posted a 6 second PB of 9:21.46 to move to 4th on the All-Time list of Women's 3000m Steeplechase, narrowly missing advancing to the final. Brady has deja vu with his watch as he sets a 10k PB at Launceston as he recaps his race. Julian recovers from the previous week and gets some runs out with Surf Coast Track Club. There were fast times at the Launceston Running Festival, with Brett Robinson taking the win in the half marathon in 1:01:56 despite some less than ideal weather conditions at the start, ahead of Liam Adams and Joel Tobin-White. Sinead Diver won the half marathon in 1:11:14, clear of Abigail Nordberg and Vanessa Wilson Jess Stenson took out the 10km setting a Course Record of 31:49, and joined the show to chat about the race, her current training and plans moving ahead. Leanne Pompeani and Eloise Wellings rounded out the podium. Launceston local James Hansen won the men's 10k race in 28:49 over Kieren Perkins and Riley Cocks. Olli recounts the tactics for his first national championships, taking in feedback after World Indoor Championships in Serbia where he finished 5th and taking the victory and enjoying a title in the 1500m.     Jeff Riseley's Exit Interview A long chat for a long career coming.  Since 2007 Jeff Riseley has been competing at the highest level of the sport and over those 15 years has represented Australia at 4 Olympic Games, making him one of only 9 Australian track and field athletes to do so. Jeff has won 6 national championships and owns the Australian 1km record with a time of 2:16. He is the 5th fastest Australian ever over 1500m with his 3:32 PB and the 6th fastest over 800m with his 1:44 PB. Following the Australian Championships last weekend, Jeff announced his retirement from the sport. Jack Rayner ran 27:15.35 to set a new 10,000m National Record at the TEN Sound Running meet in San Juan Capistrano, California. Rayner came third in the meet behind Olympic Bowerman duo, American Grant Fisher and Canadian Mo Ahmed who also set records for their respective nations.  Pat Tiernan whom set the prior record, came 14th in 27:45.95 Kiwi George Beamish and Oli Hoare were separated by .01 seconds in the 1500m earlier in the meet, Beamish taking the win in 3:36.53. John Landy set the world record for the mile 3:57.9 in 1954, setting the 1500m world record enroute and set the stage for “The Miracle Mile” in the 1954 Vancouver British Empire Games against his rival Roger Bannister. Landy represented Australia in the 1952 & 1956 Olympics, and won Bronze in the 1500m in Melbourne. One of the most iconic moments in Australian sporting history happened in the 1956 Australian National Championships where he stopped to pick up a fallen Ron Clarke, before catching the field ahead to ultimately win the race. Moose then makes a big announcement regarding a big purchase.   Chris Wardlaw, a two-time Olympian, multiple representative and coach to runners such as Steve Moneghetti, Kerryn McCann & Craig Mottram and a stalwart legend of Australian distance running is this week's guest. “Rab” as he's known as, talks with Brady about how he identifies himself, and recounts his his personal bests and the stories behind them, playing to the crowd for his 5k PB, equalling Ron Clarke's 10k record and tying with Bill Scott to 2:11:55 at the 1979 Fukuoka Marathon. Talking with Brady about the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, where he ran two 10Ks (as was the style at the time) and then the marathon, the significance of running down Prefontaine Drive, then getting the team to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow to maintain Australia's uninterrupted run through the Olympics and the legacy that left, while recounting the heat and the humidity of the marathon in Moscow and watching the dawn of De Castella's career. Rab takes it back to his days at Monash Uni, having the epiphany to get back into running and training again, then going on to develop a system of training with coach Pat Clohessy incorporating mental relaxation, high volume and quality workouts as well as the power of the critical mass. The talk then changes about his career as a coach, as the rightful creator of Deek's Quarters and Mona Fartlek, Chris gives his observations state of marathon running in Australia, coaching Craig Mottram in the end of career, learning how an athlete thinks and the experience of Sydney Olympics as the head athletics coach.
