POPULARITY
The "Murph" is a popular workout that consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another one-mile run, all done consecutively for time. The workout is named after Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005 and was known for his dedication to fitness. The Murph workout is often done on Memorial Day to honor fallen military members, and it is considered one of the most challenging and grueling workouts in the CrossFit community. Despite the fact that it's generally completed on Memorial Day, Brayden Rhoton took it a bit further. 365 days later, Brayden can now say he has not only completed the Murph Challenge for an entire year in a row, but now has the fastest recorded time! In today's episode of the Get Over Yourself Podcast, Brandon Davis leads Brayden Rhoton through a journey of remembering some of the toughest moments during his Murph journey. The two dive deep into the high's and the low's, the mental struggles, and the physical strains that were put on Brayden. This is an episode you are NOT going to want to miss. Come to learn how to get mentally stronger and accomplish something as insane as doing a Murph for an entire year. JOIN the 60-Day Challenge Show Notes: Episode 83 - https://dadawesome.org/episode83/ 6:21 - "For me, as a father, it's prioritizing that role, this sacred role, privilege of being a father" 7:21 - "This is a sacred call, an honor. And to you have to prioritize it" 8:41 - "one of my indicators and the lights that come on for me is when I get frustrated or angry" 10:56 - "as a dad, I care for my kids deeply and I'm in scenarios where I actually don't know what to do. So I feel out of control. And so then my default is frustration" 18:58 - "We love the concept of adventure. But I think for a lot of us in our own lives, the unknown can paralyze us and keep us where we know we're safe, we have control..." 20:36 - "we could just sit here all day and tell stories of why do we believe God's real? Because we've seen it in our life over and over when we couldn't do it in the big and the small way?" 22:07 - "we want to do it for them or fix it or solve it when you know we can actually help guide them through and say, Hey, OK, is that is that true? Is like, what is God say about that? And then like, Hey, we're like teaching them to bring it to God, invite God and teach them to say, OK, yeah, it is impossible from you can't do it. But what would happen if God helped you like? Then it becomes these, you know, like in the Old Testament, where you have these memorial stones that you build and say, Oh, OK, and you're and you're along their journey teaching them to say, Hey, remember when God did this for you? Not for me? They're watching us. But you're like, Maybe when you did that for you, that's a memorial stone in your journey. Look back..." 23:40 - "one of the values for me with my daughters is to be connected to their heart. So like, so they feel I just want them to always be able to talk to me" 25:22 - "teaching them to dream a little bit bigger, not just settle with, OK, yeah, what? What's the truth? What does God say" 27:06 - "we did this challenge. There were four parts to it. We said, Hey, we want to build a rhythm of adventure, which is like taking care of our soul for us individually and for us, for our kids. We're like, Hey. So it's kind of broken up into a weekly, monthly, quarterly and then yearly." 27:30 - once a week, go on an adventure 27:48 - monthly, go do an overnight or full day type of activity 28:05 - quarterly is like planned, like an adventure that is substantial 28:13 - a once a year epic kind of trip 33:56 - "this is probably my philosophy on parenthood. And, you know, as a dad is just invited to be a part of it. So we just we were outside of a need, you know, for anything healing provision, any of those areas we teach our girls that God is good, that he's powerful, that he you know, he. He's alive and moving like these are truths that are true in every season. Good, bad, hard..." 37:21 - do the work to grow, to go deeper... Don't run away from the hard things or not to label it as failure or yourself is failure. But listen, we have this is the kingdom of God." 38:13 - "Don't run away from it. Dive into that because in it, your pain, your weakness actually...Paul said that his power is made perfect and our weakness" Episode Links: Jesus Culture San Diego https://jesusculture.com/podcasts/show/man-camp/ https://dadawesome.org/strong/ Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team https://dadawesome.org/tour/ Conversation Transcript Coming Soon!
Mike and Tony discuss the CrossFit workout, "Murph," name after Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in action in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/apache/message
A note from Dr. Libby Wilson I have such respect for people who accomplish amazing things in life. I love hearing stories of hard things people have accomplished AND hearing about what they learned about themselves along the way. Challenges shape us and mold us into who we are. Matt and CJ from CrossFit CRAVE in Celina, Ohio are two men that I have a lot of respect for. When I think of Matt and CJ I think of discipline and courage. They both live their lives as examples to others of what is possible. Matt and I are the same age and grew up in the same area, but I never knew him until a few years ago. He conducted a CrossFit gymnastics seminar that I attended. At the seminar, I immediately recognized his wife–we had gone to highschool together. Small world (and she hadn’t changed or aged a bit!). Well, anyways, the seminar was amazing and I loved the way Matt connected with all of the athletes. There were 2 things I remember about the seminar. One was he said, “stay in your own lane.” It is so easy to forget that and compare yourself to others. Comparison is the stealer of joy and contentment! I also remember him mentioning he did the “Murph” every week for a year. For those of you who don’t know, “Murph” is a hero workout done in crossfit typically on Memorial Day Weekend in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005. The workout is: 1 mile Run 100 Pull-ups 200 Push-ups 300 Squats 1 mile Run. Oh and I forgot to mention, it is with a 20 pound weight vest. I’ve done it a couple of times (scaled, I need to mention), but every week for a year? WOW. Impressive. Mutual suffering builds connection. That is one of the many things I love about CrossFit. I first met CJ at CrossFit CRAVE. Matt and CJ have a podcast and I was invited to be their guest as I was launching my business. CJ is only 23, but has the wisdom of someone much older. I was impressed with CJ’s knowledge, maturity and toughness. I heard a few months later about a GORUCK event that CJ had done and I needed to hear more. 24+ hours, 40+ miles, 50% completion rate. Cold, wet, hungry, tired. And he did it! WOW. Please don’t read this and think your accomplishments aren’t important. They are. And here’s the thing. There is nothing special about Matt, CJ, Alix or me. YOU can do anything you set your mind to. As author and motivational speaker Jim Rohn says, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.” Set a goal. Do the work. Achieve your dreams. Then set another one. Be on the road to who you want to be. Create the life you want, don’t just sit back and let life happen to you. I’ll end with a quote from Marcus Aurelius (one of my husband’s all time favorites). “It is not death that a man should fear, he should fear never beginning to live.” I’d love to hear your goal. Comment below. Also I’m currently booking patients for my December program. Are you ready to chat?

Andrew discusses a CrossFit benchmark “Hero” workout just in time for Memorial Day. I meant PUSHUPS because DUH* **Also: just listening to this myself and apologies for the audio cutting/breaking up- I was recording on a ferry ride and I’m assuming these parts happened during the dead parts of cell service!**
