Sedges (genus Carex) can be an intimidating group of plants to get your head wrapped around, but it doesn't have to be that way. One key element to understanding them is knowing what to look for, which is why I am so excited to talk about a new book/key to the oval sedges - “Carex of Illinois and Surrounding States”. Join me and authors Michael Murphy, Greg Spyreas, and Paul Marcum as we explore what it took to put together their beautifully illustrated guide to these Carex, why they spent years trying to make sure it was useful, and all the unexpected finds they made along the way. “Sometimes my students ask me if I worry about the future of choral music with advanced technology, AI, but I really am not concerned at all. The way that I see it, the act of making music with each other, the need to connect with each other – I don't see that going away anytime soon. To connect through honest, authentic communication that is not a digital platform – people want that. I'm excited for the future of choral music.”Dr. Michael Murphy is the director of choral activities and a professor in Stephen F. Austin State University's School of Music, where he teaches choral conducting, ensembles, repertoire and methods courses, and oversees the graduate conducting program. Before joining the School of Music faculty in 2017, Murphy was the director of choral activities and associate professor at the University of Idaho for nine years. During this time, he was founder and artistic director of the Idaho Bach Festival and was recognized with the UI Faculty Award for outstanding scholarship, teaching and engagement. He is an active clinician, adjudicator and author, and research interests include training and developing the holistic conductor, rehearsal techniques, new choral compositions and investing and creating impactful connections in our global community through music.Murphy's international conducting and teaching experiences include Austria, China, Czech Republic, Ecuador, England, Germany, Norway, Panama and Sweden. The Confucius Institute awarded Murphy with the "Understanding China Fellowship" and asked him to serve as visiting scholar at Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology and Guangzhou University of Foreign Studies.Murphy is the coauthor and editor of "Conducting Primer in Practice," has been published several times in "Choral Journal" and contributed to volume four of "Teaching Music Through Performance in Choir."As a passionate champion of music for all, Murphy has experience teaching all ages and levels and several auditioned and non auditioned collegiate, community, school and church choirs. His choirs have been invited to perform for several state and regional American Choral Directors Association and The National Association for Music Education conferences. He also has held several international, national and state leadership positions in International Choral Conductors Federation, ACDA, NAfME, and National Collegiate Choral Organization.Murphy received his degrees in conducting and choral music education from Florida State University and East Carolina University. To get in touch with Michael, you can email him at murphymt2@sfasu.edu or find him on Facebook or Instagram.Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

Fear (61) cúisithe faoi luach €10.6m cócaon. A 61-year-old man has been remanded in custody and charged with possession of €10.6m worth of cocaine seized last Tuesday. Tá fear 61 bliain d'aois curtha siar faoi choinneáil agus é cúisithe i leith luach €10.6m den druga cócaon a gabhadh Dé Máirt seo caite. Michael Murphy was brought before Gorey District Court in Co Wexford this morning. Tugadh Michael Murphy os comhair Chúirt Dúiche Ghuaire i gCo Loch Garman ar maidin. He has an address - which has not been permitted to be published at the request of his lawyer - on the border between Kilkenny and Waterford. Tá seoladh aige - nach bhfuil ceadaithe a fhoilsiú ar iarratas óna dhlíodóir - ar an teorainn idir Cill Chainnigh agus Port Láirge. Detective Sergeant Seán Lane of Waterford Garda Barracks gave evidence that at 11.02 last night he arrested Michael Murphy, and that Mr Murphy replied "I understand the reason for this". Thug an Bleachtaire Seán Lane as Beairic na nGardaí i bPort Láirge fianaise gur ag 11.02 aréir a ghabh sé Michael Murphy, agus gur fhreagair an tUasal Murphy "tuigim an chúis atá imo leith". The Gardaí asked that he not be granted bail, which was confirmed by Judge Kevin Staunton. D'iarr na Gardaí nach mbronnfaí bannaí air, rud a dhearbhaigh an Breitheamh Kevin Staunton. Lawyer Chris Hogan asked that Michael Murphy be sent to Cork Prison - and not to Cloverhill Prison - "as there are well-founded concerns that his life would be in danger". D'iarr an dlíodóir Chris Hogan go gcuirfí Michael Murphy go Príosún Chorcaí - agus ní go Príosún Chnoc na Seamar - "mar go bhfuil imní a bhfuil bunús leis go mbeadh a bheatha i mbaol". Judge Staunton granted that request and issued a request not to publish it. Cheadaigh an Breitheamh Staunton an t-iarratas sin agus iarratas nach bhfoilseofaí a sheoladh. Michael Murphy has been remanded in custody in Cork Prison until a week from tomorrow, when he is due to appear in court again via video link. Cuireadh Michael Murphy siar faoi choinneáil i bPríosún Chorcaí go dtí seachtain ó amárach, nuair a bheidh sé le bheith os comhair na cúirte arís ar nasc-físe. A week and a half ago, Gardaí stopped a lorry on the M9 in Co Kilkenny, at around 10am this morning. Seachtain is an lá amárach a tháinig na Gardaí roimh leoraí ar an M9 i gCo Chill Chainnigh, thart ar a 10 a chlog ar maidin. The lorry was taken to Dublin Port for an X-ray examination. Tugadh an leoraí go Calafort Átha Cliath le scrúdú X-gha a dhéanamh uirthi. Then the Gardaí and the Customs Service came across 152kg of cocaine - worth €10.6m they say. Ansin a tháinig na Gardaí agus an tSeirbhís Custaim ar 152kg cócaon - luach €10.6m a deir siad. A search was subsequently carried out at a residence and 2 business premises in Waterford. Ina dhiaidh sin tugadh faoi chuardach ar theach cónaithe agus ar 2 áitreabh gnó i bPort Láirge. Michael Murphy after the court hearing in Gorey Michael Murphy tar éis na héisteachta cúirte i nGuaire

Welcome to the latest PRmoment podcast. Today we're chatting to 2 of The PRmoment Awards jury chairs Alison Clarke and Michael Murphy to get a chairs perspective on the jury day.The PRmoment Awards have 5 judging streams incorporating 6 juries across one day. So there are 30 odd jury sessions, of about an hour across 5 different judging streams. Each stream has an experienced chair to make sure everyone behaves and on today's show we have 3 of the 5 chairs. Me, Alison Clarke and Michael Murphy. As a chair it's an exhausting day. At the end of it I need to open a cold beer and go and sit in a dark room! But that need for counselling aside, it always seems to me that as chairs we have some wonderful insight from the juries that we then don't share with anyone. And today we're going to put that right with a PRmoment Podcast on "The Chairs' Perspective."Clearly we can't talk about who won or give away any campaign specifics because some of that detail is confidential but standby for a whole bunch of insight from inside the PRmoment Award juries. Thanks so much to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors the PRCA.The PRmoment Awards Manchester sold have sold out but you can still register for the waiting list. The PRmoment Awards in London still have some tickets available. But time is short. The event is on Thursday March 27th in London. The Manchester awards are a week later.Michael and Alison, welcome to the show. Here is a summary of what Alison, Michael and PRmoment founder Ben Smith discussed: 2 mins Michael and Alison explain what the PRmoment jury process is.7 mins How do Michael and Alison like to chair the sessions? It seems the chairs have their own chairing styles - there's no one best way of doing it!11 mins The chairs agree that passions and arguments can run high amongst the judges.12 mins Michael and Alison compare the type of work coming out of the consumer agencies, compared to the B2B and tech agencies17 mins A discussion about whether PR charging enough for its work19 mins How did the type of work coming out of big agencies and small agencies compare?20 mins Alison and Michael reflect on a really strong year in Manchester and The North this year.22 mins For people entering the PRmoment Awards in 2026 - what advice would Alison and Michael give?

Creativity is as intrinsic to our species as any of our basic instincts, says Debbie Millman, designer and curator. But for millions of people in the United States, the ability to create has been thwarted. This basic human need, as important as love and shelter, Millman says, isn't available for people serving time at the nearly 2,000 correctional facilities across America. In this discussion, moderated by Millman, a group of artists and activists share how they're working to bring creative outlets to people who are incarcerated. Turns out ushering creativity into these dark and lonely spaces not only increases hope for the incarcerated, it makes our country safer. Common, a hip hop artist and actor, launched the nonprofits Imagine Justice and the Common Ground Foundation. Hank Willis Thomas is a conceptual artist who co-founded For Freedoms. Claudia Peña is an artist and founding co-director of the Center for Justice at UCLA. Michael Murphy is an architect, artist, educator, and writer. Today we're opening up the vault to share an extraordinary archival recording from one of the most influential figures in Esalen's history, Frederic Spiegelberg — and while that name might not be as immediately recognizable as some of the luminaries who graced Esalen's grounds, like Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts, or Gabrielle Roth, understanding Frederic Spiegelberg and his place in Esalen mythology might be key to understanding Esalen itself . . . because in truth, without Frederic Spiegelberg, there might well never have been an Esalen at all. In 1950, Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy was just another Stanford student when he, by complete accident, attended one of Friedric Spiegelberg's philosophy courses. As recounted in Jeffrey Kripal's fantastic book, “Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religions,” that single class would become an initiatory event that transformed Murphy's life forever, providing a pivotal bridge into the metaphysical, the mystical, and the psychical realms, dimensions that would go on to define the course of his life. The recording you're about to hear takes place in 1968, nearly two decades after Michael Murphy's satori. Frederic Spiegelberg, as you'll hear, is still a force to be reckoned with. He speaks of the convergence between Eastern and Western thought, the transformative power of spiritual experience, and the boundless capacity for human growth. And as you listen to this beautiful recording, originally made on half-inch reel to reel tape that we've recently uncovered in the Esalen vault, dusted off, digitized, and are in the process of joyfully rediscovering, maybe consider this: that you're not just hearing a lecture from the past. Instead, you're taking part in a transmission. A thread that connects the early days of Esalen to the present moment. You're stepping into the very space where minds were opened and spirits awakened and the seeds of some sort of transformation were sown.

“CAN NECROMANCY REALLY RAISE THE DEAD?” #WeirdDarknessRadio WEEK OF JAN 12-18, 2025==========HOUR ONE: I'm pretty sure that unless you were born of a virgin, died, and then rose from the grave three days later, no one has had any real success at bringing people back from the underworld. But that's exactly what people who practice necromancy try to do – wake the dead. They can't be successful at it though, can they? (Raising The Dead) *** The people of Japan have a myth of a terrible snake-like creature with death-dealing powers called a Tsuchinoko. But unlike many legends, there have been modern sightings of this bizarre cryptid. Is it real? If so, what could it be? (Is The Legendary Tsuchinoko Real?) *** At the age of only 14, George Stinney Jr. was the youngest person in history to be put to death in the electric chair. Then, seventy years later he was proven innocent. (The Execution of an Innocent) ***They were cigar-shaped, glowed red and could turn on a dime. Which ruled out even the most sophisticated rockets of the time. What is it that World War II fighter pilots were seeing in the skies flying with them? (The UFOs of World War 2) ==========HOUR TWO: All families have their ups and downs. However, when you find a clan where an infanticide trial is arguably the least worst thing to happen to them, it's safe to say you've found one very special household… the Mabbitt family. (The Confusing Disappearance of Luella Mabbitt) *** A woman moves into a home where the past three residents went insane. What could possibly go wrong? (The House With The Unfortunate Past) *** Bartholomew Roberts, better known as the in famous pirate Black Bart, operated in the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean from 1719 to 1722. He was easily the most successful pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy, having been known to have captured over 400 ships in his day. But could it be true that he was actually forced to become a pirate against his will? (Was Black Bart Forced To Become a Pirate?) *** If you could choose a superpower, what would it be? Invisibility? Flight? Super strength or speed? What about X-ray vision like Superman? Would you believe there was a man in the 20th century who did have x-ray vision, without technology to do it? He had a few other superpowers as well! (The Man With The X-Ray Eyes)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: It was the slaying that shocked Australia. Sometime on the night of December 26th, 1898, Michael Murphy and his two younger sisters were slaughtered as they traveled back from Gatton in southeastern Australia. Their murders prompted a massive investigation—yet the crime remains unsolved to this day. (Australia's Unsolved Gatton Murders) *** A snowy November day, a bus full of students, and an icy lake. It was about to become the day of the worst school-related accident in Washington state history. HOUR ONE: All families have their ups and downs. (The Man With The X-Ray Eyes)==========HOUR TWO: I'm pretty sure that unless you were born of a virgin, died, and then rose from the grave three days later, no one has had any real success at bringing people back from the underworld. (The UFOs of World War 2) ==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: It was the slaying that shocked Australia. Keith Thompson is an author, independent journalist, talk radio host, and former U.S. Senate staff member. Keith's work has appeared in the New York Times, Esquire and the San Francisco Chronicle. He's the author of the new book, The UFO Paradox: The Celestial and Symbolic World of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, in which he reveals how the UFO phenomenon ultimately represents a call from the cosmos for humanity to open to greater dimensions of reality and recognize that our understanding of the universe is still far from complete. Together we talked about how he discovered Esalen in 1975 from a New Yorker article, his friendship with Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy, how he became involved in the earliest incarnations of Esalen's Center for Theory and Research, the genius of Esalen's "no one captures the flag" approach, the "Tuesday morning phenomenon," and the links between the paranormal and the aims of the human potential movement.
The Woody Allen movie, "Manhattan," includes a scene where two couples are walking and the one played by Michael Murphy and Diane Keaton unveil their Academy of Overrated. To this body they assign Gustav Mahler, Isak Dinesen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lenny Bruce, Norman Mailer, Mozart, , Vincent Van Gogh, and Ingmar Bergman. The co-hosts on this recording, Korey Maas (Lutheran), Miles Smith (Anglican), and D. G. Hart (Presbyterian), consider their own list of overrated theologians. The ones discussed are Karl Barth, the recently deceased Juergen Moltmann, and C. S. Lewis. The reason behind raising the question is not to belittle any of these theologians' achievements but to consider how it is that a theologian -- when there are so many -- emerges as the "go to" authority for ending a doctrinal debate. It also relates to confessional Protestant theological traditions in which those students training for a specific communion are going to be much more likely to read theologians in the Lutheran, Reformed, or Anglican traditions -- instead of reading broadly in the theologians who transcend specific Protestant communions. A final thread of conversation was whether the "big names" of Protestant theology can survive in an age of megachurches and church planting networks.
