I'm not a sadist. Really. Just because every so often I bring out something like "Slippery When Wet" or "Open Up and Say Ahhhh!" that doesn't mean I enjoy torturing the other show hosts, it just means I enjoy a lively discussion (after all, I have to listen to those albums too). But if you were to just listen to Kevin and Ryan you would think I stuck them in a closet with a Ray Stevens album on repeat (hmmm, note to self: Ray Stevens). So in the spirit of peace, I brought something to the table I was pretty sure Ryan was gonna eat up and go back for seconds! The Gotobeds' "Poor People Are Revolting" did the trick. All the late 70's post punk/mid-90's indie rock you could ever want to find in one album. So please enjoy. And don't start bitching next time I show up with that Ray Stevens record (they call him the streak...) Pick up this week's album from The Gotobeds on their Bandcamp page. Also this week, we spend A Few Minutes With Ultimate Fakebook's Tell Me What You Want. For A Current Affair we listen to the beautiful voice of Nina Diaz performing her single, January 9th, for the Tiny Desk Concert series. Next episode is our 100th Somebody Likes It. Tune in to hear our picks from top 100 lists from the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's.

The Beat is Dead, newly released solo album by Nina Diaz, lead singer of Girl In A Coma. Many albums capture the flood of introspection that comes after a life-changing experience. But The Beat Is Dead (out October 28 on Cosmica Records)—an expansive body of work that sonically references musicals, alt-metal, indie pop, new wave—powerfully chronicles Nina’s journey itself. “This album is the story of my addiction and my sobriety,” she says. Some songs were written while using, some in the infancy of going clean, some looking back months later with clarity. “It’s like I shed a lot of different layers of skin during this process.” The Beat Is Dead, produced by both Nina and Manuel Calderon (who engineered Girl in a Coma’s Trio B.C.), didn’t start out that way. While working on new material for her band, Nina penned the rousing “Trick Candle.” As with any other Girl in a Coma song, she fleshed it out with her bandmates, drummer Phanie Diaz (Nina’s sister) and bassist Jenn Alva. “I’m the writer, but our songs really are group efforts,” Nina says. “We jammed it out, but it didn’t feel right. It wasn’t what I envisioned.” What followed were a few difficult, but ultimately supportive, conversations about Nina taking on solo projects between Girl in a Coma albums. “It was a little rough at first. People were scared—I was scared!” she says. “But I knew I just needed to do this.”

Episode 15: Nina Diaz, Tobin Center, and Paul is DeadHey, there you are. We we’re looking all over for you. We were here, it was you that was absent for a few weeks. Anyway, this week we talk about our visit to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts to watch David Garza, Lonely Horse, and the Nina Diaz Solo Project. While we were there, we had a What If discussion about music, the forced absence of some pop stars, and who we would choose to be. We love theoretical questions, so this might happen more often in the shows. Anyway, we’re not promising a full return because life is full of surprises, but I can promise at least one per month. Episode 31: San Antonio Women of Rock Volume 1This episode, we're focusing on some great San Antonio bands with female vocalists. Huge shout out to Nina Diaz of Girl in a Coma who's already in the studio recording her solo album and another shout out to Phanie and Jenn from Girl in a Coma for starting their riot girl side project, Fea. This doesn't mean the band's breaking up, just exploring new things. Honestly, I'm hopeful in the idea that this means that they're using these projects to work things out creatively and return to Girl in a Coma refreshed and raring to go. Now, I've got to apologize that there won't be any GIAC songs in this episode, but I don't have any releases to play them on the show. It seems to me that when a band is on a label, it makes it that much more difficult to work with them. This isn't a reflection on the band, just the process and red tape that comes with dealing with legal entities and people who are trying to watch their backs and are being use to getting taken advantage of. I'm planning on trying to work with the Girls during their time in these side projects, which are unrelated to GIAC, which means they are independent from any label or record exec issues. I know the girls would be down, they're really down to earth and want what every other musician wants, to be heard.I know I've been saying this for almost a month now, but the changes that are coming are still moving along very slowly. No biggie though, it just means I can build up the excitement for when it does happen. One thing that might start happening that I haven't mentioned are on air song or album reviews. Look forward to those sooner rather than later.Let's get to the music now! We've got:Bite Lip Bleed - #16 on ReverbNation's Indie/Ska/Punk chart, sounds like No Doubt. Featuring Jen Cavazos - Vocals, Robert Binovi – Drums, Jeremy Garza – Saxophone, Nick Valdez – Bass, Juan Luna – Guitar, Gilbert Covarrubias – Trombone, &  Laith Garet Fisk – Trumpet. Our photographer friend, RD totally digs this band, as do I. Here's their song Alcohol.Celeste'al Descent - #10 on ReverbNation's Alternative/Alt. Rock/Pop Punk chart, featuring Celeste Nichole Munoz (Lead Vocalist), Isaac Isaiah Alvarez (Guitar), Josue Jimenez (Drums) and Corbin Beltran on Bass. This band has been requested the most out of any band for being spotlighted on the show via Twitter and Facebook. Here's Celeste'al Descent with Mind Over Heart.Langton Drive - #4 on ReverbNation's Indie/Rock/Queer Rock chart, featuring Jessie Riot - Vocals, Christine Rebel - Drums, Jes DeGeneres - Bass, and their new Guitarist, Jessica Perry. These ladies helped us out by killing it for the 210 Toys for Tots show in December last year and are a great group of ladies. It was really great getting to meet them and work with them. Here's their eponymous track, Langton Drive!Octahedron - ReverbNation's #1 on the Indie/Alternative chart, Octahedron features Elena Lopez - vocals, Ruben Lopez - bass, Austin Jimison - Guitar, and Daniel Puente - Drums. They're currently looking to record their debut album and I was able to hook them up with a spot opening up with 210 favorite Slowlikefire about a month ago. Look for some more great shows with these guys. Here's our debut of their new recording, Cold Reality.Rain on the Aftermath - Ranked #5 on ReverbNation's Rock/Progressive/Alternative chart, Rain on the Aftermath features Andrea Cerda - Vocals, David Garcia - Drums, Jacob Vallejo - Guitar, Chuy Hernandez - Guitar, and Chris Holt - Bass. These guys play at the Falls and Retox Bar constantly, so you have no excuse not to make it out, although I still have to check them out live as well.
