NO TOM JONES, SOME THINGS ARE UNUSUAL! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, take a lesson from the recently featured film, INCUBUS, and delve deeper into the fun-filled world of off-beat horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films. So join us, won't you, as we uncover... GENRE ODDITIES! So what is a GENRE ODDITY? Well although there may be some crossover with the CULT FILM category, GENRE ODDITIES push the weirdness a bit further! Whether it's an unusual theme, a troubled production history, or the complete disregard for a mainstream audience, a GENRE ODDITY can often lead you to the question, "How the hell did this movie ever get made?!" If you're intrigued by things like avant-garde animation, handicapped horror, frustrating patience experiments, shelved superhero epics, pretentious horror comedies, A-List auteurs, B-movie bombs, Star Search narrators, post-apocalyptic sitcom dogs, and more... this is the episode you've been waiting for. OH, AND FOR THIS EPISODE, WE'RE SANS GUESTS, IN AN ATTEMPT TO HIGHLIGHT WHAT WE LIKE TO CALL OUR "FRIENDSHIP ODDITIES."

If a very handsome and friendly young veteran named David visited your home one afternoon with a warm smile and some very kind words about your son whom he served with overseas....wouldn't YOU invite him over to stay? That's the main question which kicks off this lean, mean horror thriller directed by aspiring genre master Adam Wingard (You're Next, Godzilla Vs Kong) and starring Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Cuckoo) AS David, the titular guest. It was released ten years ago to much acclaim and minimal box office but has become something of a cult phenomenon via cable, streaming, and physical media since then. Also co-starring is modern Scream Queen herself, Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs) as Anna the older teenage daughter of the Peterson family which David stays with. The rest of the family are played by Leland Orser, Sheila Kelly, and Brendan Meyer....and they all start to really like having David around including Anna. But eventually she starts to suspect that all is NOT as it seems with regards to David....he might be hiding some secrets, some potentially VIOLENT secrets. :o And what results is an unforgettable ride sprinkled with throwback vibes to genre classics from the '70's and '80's including a catchy synth soundtrack!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

In BFGE's most gross-out episode to date, Sarah and Emma watch Jörg Buttgereit's depraved West German exploitation classic about a man that loses everything after his hot bitchy girlfriend leaves him for a comely corpse he brought home for a ménage à trois. In this episode:The ladies discuss whether polyamory can ever work (no).Sarah gives some historical insight into why the Germans took a 50 year hiatus from making horror films after the 1930s (you know why). The ladies discuss the ethics of the controversial rabbit scene.Emma asks the tough questions: Why is there always a sequel? When we started our Alejandro Jodorowsky series last year, we began a loose exploration of the history of the Midnight Movies phenomenon of the 1970s (as documented in J. Hoberman and Jonathan Rosenbaum's iconic book on the subject). Before we wrap up that discussion with David Lynch's ERASERHEAD (coming soon!), we couldn't skip past what is probably the most iconic Midnight Movie of all time, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. What started as a small stage production in an experiemental theater space in London quickly grew to a worldwide phenomenon and it, to this day, the longest running continuous theatrical release of all time. In this episode, we trace ROCKY HORROR's entire history, from its early days on the London stage through its move across the pond to the US, its disastrous original theatrical run, and its eventual rise as the most impactful Cult Film of all time. You may think you already know everything about THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, but on this episode, we'll give you the full story behind this iconic movie. From there, she programmed “TCM Underground,” which broadcast cult classics and late-night films. This week we go back a couple years to a great conversation with my friend Chris of THE CULT FILM COMPANION podcast. We discuss Stanley Kunrick's early classic noir KILLER'S KISS.Davey Gordon (Jamie Smith), a New York City boxer aging out of his profession, meets dancer Gloria Price (Irene Kane), and they begin a romance. However, their budding relationship is interrupted by Gloria's violent boss, Vincent Rapallo (Frank Silvera), who has eyes for his employee. The two decide to skip town, but before they can, Vincent and his thugs abduct Gloria, and Davey is forced to search for her among the most squalid corners of the city, with his enemy hiding in the shadows.Subscribe today!Sign up for Zencaster TODAY! https://zen.ai/Ax2lLiOypAMyn_rp4eoKemgLq-YYFcUzPdCT19xZh1EOFFER CODES: cultworthyVisit thecultworthy.comVisit the CULT FILM COMPANION @ https://shows.acast.com/the-cult-film-companion-podcast
It's a little change of pace this month. We're reviewing the 1985 war film Come and See. This film was a tough watch for some and repeat watch for others. In this episode, Chris explains why he's been waiting for the podcast's return to review this popular anti-war favorite from some of the world's most […] The post Come and See appeared first on Cult Film in Review.
This fine episode of Death By DVD originally premiered on 4/20/2022Do you know what 4/20 stands for? For a lot of folks it means BLAZE IT! Lets get high! And on 4/20, well, people get high! Boy do they get high. But 4/20 has another special meaning. On 4/20/1999 two young boys murdered 15 of their classmates with deadly weapons, a crime that would briefly shock the nation! On this episode we aren't getting high (yes we are) but we're "shooting" the shit about a movie called DUCK! The Carbine High Massacre which came out a whopping SIX MONTHS after the Columbine High School Massacre! You may want to roll a joint for this episode. You'll need it. LISTEN NOW! We're taking a trip far into the future of 2017 as we review the 1988 sci-fi classic, Cherry 2000. It's our first fan episode of the year, and boy do we have a lot to talk about! As always, we get unnecessarily deep about whether robots can predict their own death. Later, we discuss whether […] The post Cherry 2000 appeared first on Cult Film in Review.
Hey Cuz! CFIR is giving one of their longest reviews for one of the least talked about films in the Texas Chainsaw franchise. This month the guys are talking about Texas Chainsaw 3D. In this episode, the crew spends far too long trying to make heads and tails of the Sawyer/Carson family tree. Later, they […] The post Texas Chainsaw 3D appeared first on Cult Film in Review.
On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) discuss Ted Gioia's breakdown of how the culture has moved from art to entertainment, into a world of distraction, and is now veering toward addiction. (Or, how we moved from Kubrick and Coppola to TikTok and IG Stories in several easy steps.) Then they reviewed Drive-Away Dolls, the new lesbian neo-noir from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke. Is it an instant cult classic or something less impressive? Make sure to swing by Friday for our bonus episode on the Criterion Channel's Razzies program. And if you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend!
Poor Things is a high-brow steam-punk fantasy which just garnered the second largest number of Oscar nominations for 2023 including BEST PICTURE and has received universal acclaim for this surrealist tale of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone, also nominated for Best Actress), a young woman in Victorian England (?) who has recently been reborn/revived via a series of questionable experiments by a mad scientist Dr. Godwin played by Willem Dafoe. We follow her on several adventures throughout Europe as she explores what it means to be a free-thinking human being. It was directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos whose previous film The Favourite also garnered several Oscar nominations five years ago.Showgirls is a trashy exploitation melodrama which was universally panned upon initial release in '95 while also flopping notoriously at the box office, also receiving multiple Razzie Awards for that year. This story focuses on Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley, who was blamed for its failure and whose career never quite recovered afterwards) who is a wandering dancer (?) who stumbles into Las Vegas seeking fame and fortune, working her way up from an exotic dancer at a sleazy local club to an all-out phenomenon leading THE premiere exotic dance show in Vegas! We follow her character as she navigates through various dangerous and tawdry situations towards becoming.....well it's not really clear. :o This film was directed by Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven who had recently given us Basic Instinct and Total Recall....though from this film on, he was never able to find that level of success in the US again. Now what could these two films possibly have in common? Well more than you would think, especially the extreme reactions they each seem to elicit from audiences...
