Despite his reputation as “the safe Beatle,” Paul McCartney was a badass. He took wild artistic risks, rubbed elbows with truly dangerous characters and because of his crimes, did hard time in one of the world’s most notorious prisons. His public spats with Beatles bandmate John Lennon are the stuff of legend, as is the “Paul is dead” conspiracy at the end of their time together as a band, but the truth may be even stranger. What if one of the most famous musicians in the world died in the 1960s and the public never realised? For decades a corner of the conspirasphere has insisted that Paul McCartney didn't survive the height of The Beatles. According to the story he died in a car crash in 1966 and was quietly replaced by a look-alike. A man some believers claim was called Billy Shears. It sounds ridiculous. And yet the theory has refused to die. In this brand new 14 part Deep Dive we take the most detailed modern version of the claim, Billy's Back, an abridged version of The Memoirs of Billy Shears, and use it as a springboard to investigate the whole thing properly. We go through the claims piece by piece. The supposed clues in album artwork, lyrics and interviews. The timeline the theory relies on. The people who helped spread it in the first place. And some of the modern voices in the conspirasphere who still promote it today. Along the way we also dig into where the story actually came from and how a rumour from the late 60s managed to evolve into a fully fledged conspiracy theory that still circulates today.Webpage for photos referenced in the series > https://www.somedarecallitconspiracy.com/paul-is-deadJoin us on Patreon to hear the full series right now https://www.Patreon.com/somedarecallitconspiracyBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/some-dare-call-it-conspiracy--5932731/support.Some Dare Call It Conspiracy is an award-winning podcast that examines conspiracy theories, misinformation, and moral panics — not from the outside, but from the inside. The show is co-created and hosted by Brent Lee and Neil Sanders, both former insiders in the conspiracy world who spent years immersed in conspiracy belief, alternative media, and grassroots activism before walking away. Send us Fan MailSome music stories refuse to die, not because they're true, but because they're irresistible. We go myth-hunting through rock and pop's greatest legends: Paul Is Dead, Elvis is alive, “Eric Clapton is God,” Ozzy's onstage infamy, and the backward-masking panic that turned Stairway to Heaven into a courtroom rumor mill. Along the way, we talk about why a single detail like a missing shoe or a misspelled name can become “evidence,” and how the internet helps conspiracies spread faster than the truth. Then we flip the record and jump into music biopics. With the Michael Jackson movie landing in theaters, we ask why music biography films hit so hard when they're done right. We stack-rank favorites, argue about what holds up, and come back again and again to the movie that sets the modern standard: Bohemian Rhapsody. From there we shout out essentials like La Bamba, Walk the Line, The Doors, Coal Miner's Daughter, and Ray, plus curveballs like 8 Mile, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and even Amadeus for the reminder that musical genius and rivalry didn't start with guitars. We also get personal about how these movies and songs land at home, from sharing Queen with the kids to the brutal truth that our podcast might be the world's most effective sleep aid. Listen, laugh, then tell us what we missed: what rock myth do you secretly love, and what's your all-time best music biopic? If you enjoy the show, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review. One idea. Six songs. Infinite possibilities...

Send us a textThis Easter, Jackalope Tales unseals the crypt of rock 'n' roll resurrection with an episode steeped in scandal, smoke, and sizzling fajitas. Charles and Lisa dig deep into the enduring myths that Jim Morrison faked his death to escape the fame machine—and ended up flipping burgers as a line cook at a Chili's in Austin. Meanwhile, they explore the infamous “Paul Is Dead” conspiracy, complete with backward messages, barefoot Abbey Road strolls, and the quiet horror of being replaced by a bass-playing doppelgänger. From blurry photos outside karaoke bars to whispery EVP recordings of Morrison mumbling “baby back ribs,” this is an unholy mashup of Beatlemania, Lizard King lore, and deep-fried delusion. Hello Basmenteers...We have posted this SPOOKY Tail about on of the most bizarre hoaxes in the rock world. The Story of Paul McCartney (Dead or Alive) ??? IN 1969 there was a ruomer that Beatle Paul dried in 1966 and the clues were there on their albums. Well it really was a strange musical mystery tour unlike any other. We go through the clues and play some songs from this era if it were true about Paul that he may have died in a car crash years ago.WE KNOW THIS WAS NOT...N O T ... a true story, but the songs, blips and lp covers tell an undercurrent tail of a strange story.Like the War Of The Worlds, this is all fiction, please keep that in mind and just sit back and hear this spooky tail.

Rerun: Abbey Road was a street known only to North Londoners until The Beatles posed on the zebra crossing outside EMI Studios on 8th August, 1969. Photographer Iain MacMillan took just six snaps, one of which graced the front cover of their penultimate album, ‘Abbey Road'. The image became instantly iconic, partly due to the decision not to name the band or the album on the front of LP. It even spurred a conspiracy theory that claimed that Paul McCartney was dead, and being played by a lookalike, attested to his by bare feet and the number plate on the vehicle behind him. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the picture nearly didn't happen in St John's Wood at all, but in NEPAL; dive into the ‘Paul Is Dead' conspiracy; and check out the live feed of hapless tourists approximating the picture… Further Reading: • ‘Obituary: Iain MacMillan' (The Independent, 2006): https://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/iain-macmillan-364645.html • ‘Revisiting London's iconic album cover images' (BBC News, 2008): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-43318498 • ‘Beatles fans flock to Abbey Road for 44th anniversary' (Telegraph, 2013): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoVvSW-Qqmk ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' The Junkies return to Phoenix Fan Fusion, this time to record a live episode that takes them back to that most controversial – and fun – topic of conspiracy theories. This time Olivia and Shauna are helped by the audience, who tell us shocking information about Hailey Bieber, and slightly less shocking information about Margot Robbie. But first, why do conspiracy theories, pop culture or otherwise, exist? What human needs do they fulfill? And why can't Lea Michelle read? Shauna and Olivia cover a a few conspiracy theories, from the light to the dark to the very dark, and give you their takes on the veracity of these stories of vehicular manslaughter, human sacrifice, and governmental coverups. The Paul McCartney death conspiracy, known as "Paul is dead," claims that Paul McCartney of The Beatles died in a car crash in 1966 and was secretly replaced by a look-alike named William Campbell. The theory gained popularity in 1969 when fans began finding supposed clues in The Beatles' music and album art. Key Elements: "Abbey Road" Album Cover: Funeral Procession: John Lennon in white (clergyman), Ringo Starr in black (undertaker), Paul McCartney barefoot and out of step (corpse), George Harrison in denim (gravedigger). License Plate: The Volkswagen Beetle's plate reads "28IF," suggesting Paul would be 28 "if" he had lived. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Album Cover: Floral Arrangement: Spells "Paul?" with a bass guitar made of flowers. Hand Over Head: A hand raised above Paul's head, symbolizing death. Doll with Car: A doll wearing blood-red driving gloves, hinting at a car accident. Musical Clues: "Strawberry Fields Forever": John Lennon allegedly says "I buried Paul" (actually "cranberry sauce"). "Revolution 9": Played backward, some hear "Turn me on, dead man." "A Day in the Life": References a fatal car crash ("He blew his mind out in a car"). Despite consistent denials from The Beatles and McCartney, the theory persists, illustrating the enduring fascination with hidden messages and dark legends in popular culture.

And here's the second part of our rundown of the Paul is Dead musical conspiracy theory. In this episode, we consider the long-term implications of this brief mania, as well as the modern conspiracists who just won't let it go. UFOs start in two weeks. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We're back! But we're not doing UFOs yet. First, we're doing a two-parter on one of the most famous music-related conspiracies in modern history--that is, the sudden mania that gripped The Beatles fandom, who for very confusing reasons in 1969 started thinking that Paul McCartney had secretly died and been replaced with a doppelganger, whose voice also somehow was a dead ringer for the tragically dead young genius. This whole thing burned out and became an in-joke quickly enough, but its brief era of cultural mania is super-interesting and a lot of fun. We hope you agree. Happy to be back with you. The second part hits in two weeks, and then it's UFOs as far as the eye can see. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
