(inform, inspire, & transform)You can find Bruce via his website brucebabashan.comAs the creator of Meet The Moment™, Bruce challenges one of the most common assumptions in leadership—that organizations succeed simply by developing exceptional leaders. His work argues that while leadership development is essential, it is only part of the equation. The organizations that consistently perform at the highest level also prepare for the reality that every leader is human. Drawing on experience in executive leadership, organizational assessment, and high-stakes decision environments, Bruce helps audiences understand why judgment, communication, and decision-making can change as complexity, uncertainty, and pressure increase—and why organizations should anticipate those moments rather than simply react to them. Instead of asking how leaders can become tougher or more resilient, Bruce introduces a practical framework for building leadership support systems that help preserve sound decisions, clear communication, and organizational performance when the stakes are highest. Bruce, thanks for sharing your many gifts and talents with people all over the world, thanks for continuing to grow as a leader, and thanks for being our guest on Life's Essential Ingredients…welcome to the show!TOTD – “As to methods, there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. Send us Fan MailThe National Fire Academy has a name that still stops conversations cold, but a lot of firefighters are asking a blunt question: why doesn't the “Mecca” feel like the place you go to become deadly competent on the fireground? We dig into that disconnect without cheap shots, and we get honest about what the NFA is great at, namely executive leadership, grants, budgets, community risk reduction, and the administrative work that shapes an entire department. We also unpack why crews in the apparatus bay often lose faith in federalized training: it can feel too far from the nozzle, too focused on liability-driven risk avoidance, too slow to keep up with lightweight construction and new hazards, and too gated by prerequisites and affiliation rules. I share a personal gut-punch story about being accepted to the Executive Fire Officer Program and learning I could not continue after retirement due to the affiliation policy, even with experience and a platform to support the fire service. Then we get practical about where the best operational firefighting training really comes from: company-level repetition, the kitchen table, regional and state academies with burn towers and real props, hands-on conferences like FDIC, and the modern blend of fire science research from UL FSRI and NIST with street-tested engine and truck tactics. If you care about fire service training, fireground tactics, and building better firefighters, hit play, share this with your crew, and subscribe and leave a review so more people can find the conversation.

Beyond the Uniform: Career vs. Volunteer EMS

Send us Fan MailYou call 911 on the worst day of your life, and the crew walking through the door can look the same no matter what patch they wear. But career EMS and volunteer EMS are built on very different systems, and those differences can quietly shape training, protocols, equipment, and even what “standard of care” means in practice. Kevin Ferrara is joined by paramedic Justin Whitney to break down where the two workforces overlap, where they diverge, and why the future of emergency medical services depends on getting honest about the gap. We talk about what standardization looks like when budgets are tight, administrative roles are filled part-time, and leadership development is often treated as optional. Justin shares why EMS lacks a consistent career progression model beyond certification levels, and why borrowing a structured ladder from the fire service could help agencies build stronger supervisors, safer operations, and better quality assurance. We also dig into scope of practice, from national guidance to state protocols to agency medical directives, and how that layered system can either protect patients or create inconsistency across neighboring departments. Then we go straight at accountability and public trust: Should EMS have something like a Brady list to prevent unsafe providers from bouncing to the next agency or the next state? Who really has the power to restrict or remove a provider's clinical practice? And why does something as simple as uniforms and visible ID matter when volunteer responders arrive from home in street clothes? If you care about paramedic standards, EMT training, public safety funding, and what patients should be able to expect when an ambulance arrives, this one will give you a lot to think about. Subscribe, share this with someone in EMS, and leave a review with your take on what the minimum standard should be. The Energy DrinkFounded by Firefighters. David Pollack is back — and a lot has happened since his first appearance on the show. In one stretch, he was let go from ESPN after 14 years on College GameDay, and then came the news no husband is ready for: his wife Lindsay was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Today, she's cancer-free — and David says she never once cried, never once asked "why me?"In this conversation, David opens up about getting fired ("they told me not to come back"), why the timing turned out to be God's perfect setup, and what it looked like to watch faith win over fear in his own home. He shares why he prays for his kids' resilience instead of their protection, how making decisions before choices will change your family, and the simple three-part prayer system — Reflect, Repent, Repurpose — that transformed his relationship with God.Plus: David and Chris dig into the state of college football, the move toward a 24-team playoff, why players are opting out of playoff games for the portal, and what's happening with Georgia baseball. And a wild connection — Lindsay's doctor at Duke is the same Dr. Henry Friedman who treated Jimmy's mother-in-law.David's new book, Every Day Counts, is available wherever books are sold: https://www.amazon.com/Every-Day-Counts-Start-Where/dp/B0FG6Z4N9LLearn more about David or book him to speak: https://davidpollack.comAs always, we thank our title sponsor https://onecountry.com for making this podcast possible — catch every episode on the OneCountry app — and https://konexial.com for their continued support of the show.COACH ME UP TEAM https://onecountry.com https://konexial.comFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CoachJimmyDykes https://twitter.com/ChrisBurke02••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Hosted by Jimmy Dykes and Chris Burke Produced by Jared Mark Fincher — https://jaredmarkfincher.com All audio is subject to copyright 2026 Jimmy Dykes Inc. It's something you create every single day through the choices you make.Videocast Replay Link: https://youtube.com/live/OmYBzPm98VgIf you've been feeling stuck...Waiting...Overwhelmed...Or simply needing a reminder of what really matters...I hope this conversation speaks to your heart.I'd also love to hear from YOU.What topics would you like me to cover on future episodes?Send me your thoughts, questions, feedback, or simply say hello:
