Episode 126: Reaction to Rory McIlroy's Win at Pebble Beach

Professional golf came through this week for fans, giving us everything we want: a great course, great players and challenging conditions. Rory McIlroy got his PGA Tour season kicked off in dramatic fashion with a 3 stroke victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. McIlroy took angles we haven't seen before at Pebble Beach with a display of power that course has not often seen. He also showed a more conservative approach game he patterned after Scottie Scheffler on his way to victory. Are big things in store for Rory McIlroy in 2025? Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth came off injuries and were back in action. Scottie shook off the rust quickly, while Jordan Spieth really struggled in his 2025 debut. Speaking of comebacks, Ollie Schniederjans coming back from double hip replacement surgery in 2022, bested Bryson DeChambeau and Jaquin Niemann on the Asian Tour. LIV Golf kicks off their season this week in Saudi Arabia as they are under the lights for the opening of the season. It is a huge year for LIV with PIF negotiations and some of its largest stars on the last year of their contracts. Andy and Brendan went live on YouTube late Sunday night to recap Rory McIlroy's win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, his 27th career victory on the PGA Tour. They dive into what was a quality weekend of golf on the PGA Tour, providing a much-needed boost to the product after a sleepy start to the season. The two unpack Rory's dominating performance driving the ball, including the ridiculous line he took on the 14th hole which lead him to an eagle on Sunday to practically seal his win. Andy and Brendan also compliment the CBS broadcast, which elevated the event even more than its "signature" status. They discuss what turned out to be a packed European Ryder Cup leaderboard, with strong performances from Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, and Sepp Straka. TGL superstar Tom Kim was also a factor, finishing in a tie for seventh after being put on the clock for slow play (again). In addition to Rory, Scottie Scheffler also made his first start of 2025, finishing in a tie for ninth. After wrapping up with more discussion about why venues matter on the PGA Tour, Andy and Brendan turn their attention to perhaps their favorite venue, DLF. Ollie Schniederjans won for the first time in nine years, blowing out a LIV-heavy field in India. Andy shares some intel from someone who's played DLF about the course and why Bryson was perhaps not the biggest fan of the greens there. A Lim Kim won the LPGA's Tournament of Champions, which ended right in the coverage gap for Pebble Beach, outlasting a late charge by Nelly Korda on Sunday. In golf news from the weekend, Brendan shares a letter written by Charley Hoffman that was shared with PGA Tour members on Sunday night. Hoffman is suggesting that top players need to show their support for the Tour by playing in more events, despite taking time off to play overseas or in TGL matches on Mondays and Tuesday nights. To wrap this episode up, Andy, Brendan, and PJ react to the Luka Doncic trade in an NBA-focused Sports Minute.

Welcome once again to Flaghunters ! Today, we are graced with none other than Bradley Hughes himself !     Bradley was born in Melbourne, Australia and turned pro in 1988. He has played on the PGA Tour of Australasia, the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, Japan Golf Tour and the European Tour. He won 7 times as a professional, notably the Austrailian Masters twice and in the 1993 Australian Masters, he hit every green in regulation in the final round to shoot 7-under par to catch  Australian legend Peter Senior. Bradly also played in the first Presidents Cup and was paired with World #1 at the time, Nick Price. In other words, the man can play...     Hughes quit playing competetive golf in 2008 and now teaches primarily at Holly Tree CC in Greenville, South Carolina. Through his teachings, he has helped Brendon Todd revitalize his career and also coaches Brandt Snedeker, Harold Varner, Cameron Percy, Greg Chalmers, Ben Martin, Robert Allenby and Ollie Schniederjans.   Bradly has created 2 websites, www.bradleyhugesgolf.com and www.bradleyhughesgolf-members.com. Both contain a well-spring of information. I would HIGHLY encourage anyone to visit the Members  site and sign up because the info that Brad provides is hard-fought and battle- tested through the crucible of Pro Golf.   I am very proud of this conversation and I am sure that Bradley's wisdom will undoubtedly help anyone, as it has me, to play better golf. Cheers                                                                                J.P.

Todd feels Tiger's approach after his second back surgery is a great plan. Todd tells listeners that Tiger seems to be a fallen star in the eyes of the fans/public. Fans seem sympathetic toward Tiger and have forgotten his past misgivings and they are rooting for him to make a comeback. Holly and Todd talk about Tiger possibly coming back and challenging the new foursome in golf: Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Jason Day. Todd recently had a chance to talk with Henrik Stenson about his upcoming schedule between the European Tour and the PGA Tour and how he might shift some appearances to make sure he is in great shape heading into the major championships this season. Todd feels that Stenson may win a Major championship and will definitely finish in the top 10 and a couple of the majors this year.
