D'Arcy Waldegrave: Tiger Woods turned down $700-$800 million offer to join Saudi-backed LIV Golf series

Tiger Woods turned down an offer worth approximately US$700-$800 million to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, according to the tour's CEO Greg Norman. During an interview on Fox News that aired on Monday, former world No. 1 Norman was asked by Tucker Carlson if it was true that Woods was offered $700-$800 million to join the LIV Golf series. "That number was out there before I became CEO," Norman replied. "So, that number's been out there, yes. Look, Tiger's a needle mover, right? "So, of course, you're going to look at the best of the best. They had originally approached Tiger before I became CEO, so, yes, that number is somewhere in that neighbourhood." Previously, Norman had told the Washington Post in June that Woods was offered huge money to participate but turned it down. Norman said the Woods proposal was "mind-blowingly enormous; we're talking about high nine digits." The controversial tour has attracted some big names from the golfing world to leave the established PGA Tour and the DP World Tour to participate for vast sums of money. Major winners Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Graeme McDowell, Charl Schwartzel and Martin Kaymer have all joined the breakaway venture, which has offered players huge money to join. The LIV Golf series is backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) -- a sovereign wealth fund chaired by Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia -- and has pledged to award $250 million in total prize money. However, it has led to criticism from many players, including Rory McIlroy and Woods, that players have abandoned golf's traditional set up and accepted money from a country with a dismal human rights record. Before July's Open at St. Andrews, Scotland, Woods said he disagreed with the players who had left. "I think that what they've done is they've turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position," the 15-time major winner said. "Some of these players may not ever get a chance to play in major championships. That is a possibility. We don't know that for sure yet. It's up to all the major championship bodies to make that determination. But that is a possibility, that some players will never, ever get a chance to play in a major championship, never get a chance to experience this right here, walk down the fairways at Augusta National. "But what these players are doing for guaranteed money, what is the incentive to practice? What is the incentive to go out there and earn it in the dirt? You're just getting paid a lot of money up front and playing a few events and playing 54 holes. They're playing blaring music and have all these atmospheres that are different." Woods added: "I just don't see how that move is positive in the long term for a lot of these players, especially if the LIV organization doesn't get world-ranking points and the major championships change their criteria for entering the events. "It would be sad to see some of these young kids never get a chance to experience it and experience what we've got a chance to experience and walk these hallowed grounds and play in these championships." Woods even went as far to criticize Norman himself for his role in the splinter tour. "Greg has done some things that I don't think is in the best interest of our game, and we're coming back to probably the most historic and traditional place in our sport." On Sunday, Henrik Stenson won the third event of LIV Golf's debut season at Bedminster, New Jersey. Nearly two weeks after he was stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy for joining the series, the 46-year-old Swede shot 11-under par at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster to win $4 million. He accepted the trophy alongside former US President Donald Trump, who was present throughout the three-day competition and who owns the course.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This Wednesday episode begins with some thoughts on the last major of the year, the AIG Women's Open at Muirfield. Andy and Brendan discuss their recent trip to the course, some favorite holes, some amusing stories, and how the women's game might bring it into the modern world. On the PGA Tour, they discuss the myth of the FEC bubble and how many players hovering around it are truly unworthy of a “postseason” berth after this week's Wyndham. This leads to more Max McGreevy facts than you could ever anticipate. James Hahn's weird and misguided tweets are dissected, as is the new PGA Tour schedule, which seems to do nothing more than throw some money at the problems while changing very little else. News hits on Tiger Woods's astronomical offer to join LIV, Patrick Reed going to Asia to play golf, and a Henrik Stenson conspiracy theory.

At this weekend's Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, Tony Finau shocked the world and claimed the title of the World's Hottest Golfer, claiming his second consecutive victory. Hosts Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell ate their words and ponder Finau's future chances of winning the FedEx Cup and a major (1:39). Meanwhile at Trump Bedminster, LIV Golf made waves once again as Henrik Stenson proved why he jumped from Ryder Cup Captaincy to the Saudi backed tour, claiming victory in his first event against, as is now usual, poor performing field. Alex and Michael also share thoughts on David Feherty's new gig in the tower, and the heartbreaking announcement from Bubba Watson (5:56). The PGA Tour announced the new 2022-2023 season schedule and purse sizes, showing that LIV is making changes on the legacy tour as payouts increase by some $5-$8 million, or more, for many events in what will be the final wrap-around golf season (11:31). The newly minted CoL TopGolf Tour kicked off this weekend as Alex began a season of visiting different Top Golfs across the country with a trip to his local Austin driving range and watering hole (13:27). The final regular season event kicks off in North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship as the Tour regulars jockey for position to make it into the FedEx Cup Playoffs (15:35). In Tuned In, Michael is revisiting a classic from his childhood featuring Superman and Lois Lane, while Alex is still getting his fill of "van life" after chatting with Matt Cardis last week (17:25). This week's guest is Gianna Gravalese, a TV, radio, and internet host from NESN, Dirty Water Media, and KISS108 in Boston. Gianna chats with Alex about her journey into Dirty Water Media, life eating and driving her way through the Boston food scene, and rubbing elbows with music's biggest stars at the annual Kiss Concert (20:43). Alex and Michael are perplexed at the name change of the former Robby Anderson, who is stealing headlines for his new and not that different legal name (47:41). As the guys #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex is gearing up for a trip back up to Boston and all the food fun that comes with a trip home, while Michael is hoping Alex enjoys some of his home state's 42 ice cream shops on the New Hampshire Ice Cream Trail (49:42).

Tony Finau's triumph is reviewed, with some late shakiness after a strong back nine to take his second win in less than a year. Husky Darren Clarke and Richie Ramsay are also credited for their wins. News returns to the LIV developments from late last week, where Henrik Stenson's backstabbing disgraceful betrayal is put on blast, and there's befuddlement over what Charles Howell III does for LIV.

With the world watching the 150th Open Championship and basically the entire crowd at the Old Course rooting for Rory, Cam Smith rides excellent ball striking, a hot blade and balls of steel to fire a back-nine thirty en route to a final round 64 to steel the Open Championship from the grasp of Rory McIlroy, who eventually came in third after Cameron Young's epic eagle on 18. LIV is in the golf news again this week with rumors of Cam Smith, Hideki Matsuyama, Henrik Stenson and other defecting away from the PGA & DP World. Tours to sign lucrative contracts with LIV Golf. It is 3M Open week here in Minnesota! The podcast will be on site throughout the week doing an episode Wednesday, social media content and talking PGA Tour and TPC Twin Cities. A magical week for Andy and Brendan at The Open comes to a close with this recap episode after the final round at The Old Course. After walking with Cam, Rory, and the rest, they relay what they saw and why it shook out the way it did. Cam's legendary final round is dissected, with a few key spots and shots picked out that seemed to turn the tide in the final hours. The Rory heartbreak is reviewed, with debate on whether he played it too safe or just got beat by the hot talent. There's one more occasion to reflect on and praise The Old Course, which had both feeling grateful to be present for this particular major. They discuss how it played and why it separated again on Sunday. Cam Young gets his due, as does a certain housecat. Then they wrangle with LIV returning to our lives promptly, with the new Champion Golfer of the Year not exactly shooting down questions about rampant LIV rumors surrounding him, Jon Rahm suggesting the tours negotiate with some strong words for the Euro Tour, and Henrik Stenson apparently jumping ship and losing his Ryder Cup captaincy.
