Du Quoin, Illinois is having a rough week, and this one hits close to home.Massive downtown fire in Rafe's hometown of Du Quoin. Multiple businesses were destroyed, including Home Lumber Company, BJ's Garden Inn and other properties along the downtown business district. Making an already difficult situation even worse, the fire happened during the Du Quoin State Fair, one of the biggest economic weeks of the year for the small Southern Illinois community.Rafe talks about seeing the damage to a downtown that's already watched businesses disappear over the years, while Lern shares her own memories of growing up nearby and planning entire summers around the Du Quoin State Fair. Thankfully, the transcript reports no injuries or deaths, but the loss is still devastating for a town of roughly 6,000 people.So the crew sends some love south and encourages everybody heading to the fair to support Du Quoin however they can.Then, eventually, the daily comedy machine starts malfunctioning again.The conversation turns into a full Southern Illinois State Fair nostalgia session, complete with Wiz Khalifa, Russell Dickerson, demo derbies, Night Ranger and Rafe remembering the time he watched Joe Diffie put on what felt like a full stadium concert inside a tiny Budweiser beer tent. The premise involves eligible bachelors from St. Louis rock radio, women applying to date them and enough trash-TV energy to immediately attract hypothetical sponsors. There isn't actually an island involved, but that's apparently a minor logistical concern. Unlike the made-for-TV special announcing the final twelve players at this year's Presidents Cup, this Wednesday episode is not a full hour long... but Andy and Brendan do spend most of it reacting to the final rosters and the programming that brought them to us. The two discuss the ridiculousness of a 60-minute show at 5 p.m. on a Tuesday to announce the teams, every player immediately being called "great for the teamroom," and U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker's whispers to Todd Lewis about his selections. Eventually they do get into the picks, most notably Snedeker's selection of Jackson Koivun as the final man on Team USA. Andy and Brendan wonder how Snedeker might've arrived at the decision to take the young star, with some conspiracies being thrown out almost immediately. They debate the merits picking of Koivun (and Jacob Bridgeman) instead of some who did not make the team, including Ryan Gerard, J.J. Spaun, and Ben Griffin. On the International side, Geoff Ogilvy's selections were fairly chalk until a surprise final selection of Christiaan Bezuidenhout, whose wifi (or lack thereof) was a lowlight of the Golf Channel show. PJ can't believe the C-Bez pick and points out that he's ranked lower than assistant captain Taylor Pendrith on basically any list you can find. Andy supposes that the selection was a last-minute rebuttal to the Bridge Man's putter landing a spot on the American side. We've seen this movie before. Band comes out hot with their debut, have hits, sell millions of records, and then record a follow-up the label says isn't good enough so it gets shelved for a while and all that momentum stalls and never comes back. Fort Worth's Toadies lived it, After Rubberneck and the smash "Possum Kingdom" exploded, the label didn't hear a hit on the follow-up and told them to try again. Four years pass and when a new album does get completed, the label doesn't promote it. Though it was bumpy at first, Toadies carried on anyway and even have a new album called The Charmer and a huge North American tour kicking off any second.
