The Artistic director and CEO of Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), Dr Rebecca Coates talks about the history of the SAM collection, the impact on the local area, the upcoming exhibition schedule and the story behind the design and construction of the gallery itself. SAM's new home is an outstanding example of exciting, best-practice contemporary museum architecture - a five-storey building housing the Museum, Visitor Centre, and the Kaiela Art Gallery and Studio, perhaps the only example of a local Aboriginal arts centre sharing the same building and new arts and cultural space with an art museum.   The 5,300m2 building also houses a café and event space, with a roof top viewing deck.  A transcript of this edition is available for download HERE. Australian artist Keg De Souza creates site- and situation-specific projects with people. With an emphasis on knowledge exchange, Keg’s investigation of social and spatial environments is influenced by her formal training in architecture and experiences of radical spaces through squatting and organising. Keg’s work on an alternative mapping project of Shepparton was formed as part of the MPavilion 2017 regional program in collaboration with Shepparton Art Museum (SAM). At this insightful talk at MPavilion, Keg appeared in conversation with SAM director Rebecca Coates and MPavilion’s own Brendan McCleary, discussing her processes and outcomes, and reflecting upon her recent work in Shepparton. This event was part of MPavilion’s inaugural regional program. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. MRelay—Part 1: Habitat • 30 Jan 2016

The first leg of MRelay is devoted to Habitat. As we leap from the starting blocks, we’ll cast our gaze around: at our natural environments, our sense of place and how place transforms us. Today’s places are changing fast—whether they’re a tropical rainforest or a city such as London, Melbourne or Berlin, a habitat for artists or an ecology for designers. ‘Design thinking’ stimulates a natural inquisitiveness and embraces ideas of origins and place. The way people habitually use spaces becomes a guide for design, alongside rational, economic, civic and environmental necessities. Design is everywhere—what matters is how we look at it. Habitat was hosted by Simon Knott, director and co-founder of BKK Architects. Speakers included Naomi Milgrom AO, MPavilion founder and commissioner for Australia, Venice Biennale 2017; Andrew McConnell, executive chef of Cumulus Inc. and Cutler & Co.; Alice Glenn, president and creative director of Schoolhouse Studios; Rueben Berg, founder and director of Indigenous Architecture Victoria; Rebecca Coates, director of Shepparton Art Museum; Professor Julie Bernhardt, scientist and director at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health; and Kate McMahon, co-founder of urban-strategy agency Hello City.
