He presents the life of the various rural dwellers, including bullock drivers, squatters and itinerant travelers, and also attempts to convey the accents of Irish, Scottish and Chinese personalities he encounters. This tale provides insight into the stories and hardships of rural dwellers in Australia in the latter half of the nineteenth century, as well as the narrator's own philosophy of life. The original huge manuscript (1897) of Such Is Life, Being Certain Extracts from the Diary of Tom Collins, was sent to A. G. Stephens of the Bulletin. Stephens realised the merit of the text but knew it was impracticable to publish, so returned it to Furphy. Parts of the text were released in various forms, but the first complete edition was not published until 1946. Joseph Furphy, however, had died at Claremont on 13th of September 1912.

College Basketball Big Monday is officially back, and both the Kansas Jayhawks and North Carolina Tar Heels took care of business against the Cincinnati Bearcats and Wake Forest Demon Deacons, respectively. Bill Self's shooting guard problem looks to finally be resolved after Johnny Furphy dropped 23 points and 11 rebounds, while the Jayhawks got just two points from their bench - a pair of free throws by Elmarko Jackson in the final seconds. RJ Davis solidified his spot as ACC Player of the Year frontrunner by dropping 36 points for the Tar Heels, who are now 8-0 in ACC play. The Big Ten only has four teams over .500, and we discuss which other teams outside of Purdue, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Northwestern, are most likely to compete for a top-three spot in the Big Ten and a guaranteed at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
