Lord Falconer, Baroness Kennedy and (meagre) Sir Nicholas are joined by Tom Strathclyde, 2nd Baron Strathclyde, to interrogate the purpose of our unelected chamber and whether, after a 27-year grace period, the last hereditary peers might, finally, be headed for the door. There are few families in Britain closer to the royal family than the family of wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill. His grandson, Sir Nicholas Soames, knew Prince Philip very well over a 60-year period and shared his thoughts on his passing in a special edition of LockdownTV.“It's a strange day, a day of reflection, and I hope people get him right," he told me. "The press, with that attention span for which they are famous, always talks about his ‘gaffes' — his gaffes were that what you saw was what you got. He was an absolutely ram rod straight former naval officer, who didn't have much time for sycophancy or bloody fools or anyone else, and spoke as he found. But he was essentially a man of great humour, he had tremendous wit and charm … and he held very strong views. This is not a mere figure.”Sir Nicholas reflected on the values of the generation that the Duke of Edinburgh belonged to:"One of the saddest things about Prince Philip dying — and about a lot of people who die of his generation — is that they are the last of a generation who people talk about slightly glibly, but they were the wartime generation. He did see active service, he knew what it was like to command in great difficulty and at hours of great danger... The values of his generation now feel quite far away. He wasn't a sentimentalist, Prince Philip, but he was a tough egg... He was the epitome of the stiff upper lip. I mean that in the best sense of the word. It wasn't that he didn't share emotion in any way, but he was a great believer in picking yourself up and getting on with it.I'll tell you what I think we have lost, that his generation had — we've lost any sense of proportion about what goes on. Everything is bulled up into an enormous drama, but if you've lived in that generation you've lived through an era of profound upheaval. And you learned to distinguish between what was important and what wasn't important. I think we've lost that now."Sir Nicholas stressed that, as evidenced by Prince Philip's founding of St George's House centre for spiritual reflection at the chapel at Windsor Castle, "he was a thinker, and he was interested in the spiritual side of life."But the reputation for straight talking was well-earned:"He didn't like bloody fools, and if he thought you were talking rubbish he told you… What you saw with Prince Philip was what you got. He was completely authentic as a human being. I think it must have been a great challenge when he first started as the Queen's consort not to allow his own character to dominate. He was always in the Queen's wake, and he supported her through thick and thin, through some terribly difficult times."Sir Nicholas shared that Prince Philip would not have wanted a state funeral, even if Covid had not prevented one:"I think people would have wanted in great numbers to come and show their respects to Prince Philip, and I think it's very sad — and entirely correct and understandable — that there are going to have to be very special arrangements for the funeral, because after all the royal family will want to behave the same as anyone else. I understand the body will lie in state at Windsor before his burial and it is not going to be a great do… I know for a fact that Prince Philip did not want a state funeral, but there would have been an opportunity for the public to pay their respects, because he was greatly admired." An intriguing and moving exhibition came to Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue last week to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. Aron Grünhut: Rescuer of the Jews and Human Rights Defender told the extraordinary, and until now little-known, story of this Slovakian Jew who managed to use his business acumen, considerable influence and sheer chutzpah to negotiate with the Nazis to allow over 1,300 Slovakian and Austrian Jews to escape to places of safety, including Palestine and – in the case of 10 children, in collaboration with Sir Nicholas Winton – England. Routes to Palestine by boat involved danger negotiating Europe’s rivers and towards the end of the war, Grünhut’s own luck almost ran out, his life saved only by the courage of a Slovak fireman who hid him.In this podcast, which begins with an excerpt of an address from the Ambassador of Slovakia, Lubomir Rehak, Judi Herman speaks to Ambassador Rehak, Nicky Winton – son of Sir Nicholas – and Israel's Deputy Ambassador Sharon Bar-Li, about this extraordinary man and his story. Herman is a member of NPLS, a congregation with close links to both Slovakia and the Czech Republic as guardian of Torah scrolls from some of the Jewish communities in those countries that did not survive the Shoah.

Since 2017 he has been Chair of Arts Council England. In this conversation we explore the challenges and opportunities we have both experienced in our careers.

Is 'Mimsy' a word? Surely that's absurd! Actually it's a portmanteau of 'Miserable' and 'Flimsy' as defined by the A-lady and, according to this skill, it means 'Rather feeble or prim and affected'. Thus it's a great word to include as one of the names of Sir Nicholas in the wonderful HP books. BTW I bought a bottle of sauce the other day. HP. I'm paying 8p a week for 15 weeks. If that doesn't make sense to you then Google 'HP Sauce' - it's a British institution.

The man credited with reinventing the museum and changing British culture, Sir Nicholas Serota joins us for a special extended episode of In Other Words. Now Chair of Arts Council England, Serota was the director of Tate for 28 years. More than anybody else, he helped shift attitudes in Britain, making the country more comfortable with contemporary art while he oversaw the growth of Tate both physically and in terms of reputation and ambition. Once a small institution, Tate became a phenomenon and the best attended museum of Modern art in the world. Serota began his career in the 1980s during a period in which the country's politics were isolationist and there was a “certain paranoia about continental Europe and artists from Europe”. By the early 2000s, the country had become more international and open, and the arts were flourishing as London established itself as a creative and economic hub. Recorded on the day of a historic defeat in the government's “meaningful vote” on Brexit, Serota discusses the current climate with our host Charlotte Burns: “Some things don't change. And human nature is one of those. People feel challenged by difference.” While he himself is “always regarded as being right in the center of the establishment… I still have a sense of what it means to be an outsider,” Serota says. “I will continue to believe that international exchange of all kinds is valuable.” He discusses running one of the world's largest museums—including why he never left for an American museum—and talks about the challenges facing institutional leaders today: “Whatever the difficulties were in the late ‘80s, it's become even more difficult to run these big institutions now than it was then.” For this, and much more, tune in now. The claim is absurd - a measure of the frivolity of Corbyn's own stance rather than any extra-constitutional manoeuvring by the armed forces. Every postwar government has supported Britain's nuclear deterrent and our participation in Nato. That is the policy of the Labour party, regardless of Corbyn's own views. Corbyn's parliamentary colleagues know that the voters will never trust a party that is weak on defence - and they should flatly contradict their leader's whims. Lucy Fisher: Britain is facing a crisis of confidence in foreign policy, “sidelined in Syria, ineffective in Ukraine, unwilling in Europe, and inimical towards refugees”. The 1924 expedition culminated in the deaths of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, sparking an on-going debate as to whether or not they actually reached the summit. Filming in harsh conditions with a specially adapted camera, Captain Noel captured images of breathtaking beauty and considerable historic significance.
