We are happy to present a two-part series with Melissa Harris, Deputy Director, Disabled and Elderly Health Programs Group, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Her role is to develop and implement policies to advance Home and Community Based Services (HCBS).  Here in Part 1 we discuss Medicaid generally as it relates to adults with disabling autism. HCBS waivers are intended to serve those with developmental disabilities in need of an institutional level of care, but waitlists in many states are very long, and providers willing to serve those with complex needs can be very scant. We discuss the staffing crisis, the availability of extra funds ot the states under the Rescue Plan, the issue of "waiver on paper" that does not translate into actual services, ICF availability or lack thereof, the rising rates of autism in the Medicaid system, and more. ••• Please pardon the technical difficulties, Ms. Harris had some difficulties with her connection but in almost all cases the audio can be understood.

For special needs parents, worry about your child’s future can begin at any age. What will happen when my child ages out of the school system? How will they transition to adult services, college, or work? This week on the podcast Emily Colson is talking about her son Max’s transition from boyhood to adulthood, and how through each season of life God has supported their family. Because even as Max became an adolescent, Emily began to fear graduation, wondering what would happen without their provided services and routines. But with the support of her church, Emily has learned to celebrate each victory as she’s navigated issues in the adult world and found meaningful activities for her son (including a new ministry of encouragement birthed during the pandemic). With paying jobs, volunteer work, and a day program, Max’s days have been full. And both Emily and Max have discovered how much he is needed by his employers and the church. Be encouraged by Emily’s conversation and how God answered her prayer that Max would grow to be a mighty man of God. Order Helping with Life’s Transitions:Engaging Young Adults with Disabilities into the Life of Your ChurchLearn More About Joni and Friends' Church Training ResourcesOrder Your Heart by Max Cards Questions or comments? Discover what’s possible when someone fosters motivation by encouraging autonomy. Today’s guest is Katerina Cizkova. Katerina is a psychologist and a Clinical Director at ABA Centrum, an autism center in Prague, Czech Republic. The Global Autism Project partnered with ABA Centrum in 2016. We have since sent nine SkillCorps® volunteer teams to provide sustainable hands-on training. Katerina and I worked closely together last year as she was completing the supervision hours required by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, or BACB. She is doing amazing work at ABA Centrum, and I am so proud to know her as a partner, colleague, and friend. In this conversation, we discuss the types of services available for individuals with autism in the Czech Republic, the potential harm of implementing interventions that are not evidence-based, and some of the ethical considerations to review when designing programs. Here is a link to view the documentary Katerina mentions about autism in the Czech Republic: Children of the Full Moon.Katerina is passionate about Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA. She talks about how she became involved in the field, why she thinks ABA is sometimes misunderstood by parents and professionals, and how she views the changes to the BACB’s international credentialing. At the time of recording, on April 23rd, ABA Centrum was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Katerina describes the center’s transition to online services and how they keep parents engaged from a distance. For more information about Katerina Cizkova and ABA Centrum, please visit their website: ABA Centrum. ----more----We appreciate your time. Autism Advocate and Author Erin Clemens, and Dr. Todd Harris, Executive Director of Autism Services at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health discussed growing up with Autism Spectrum Disorder, what to expect and how to prepare for a life after education.   Dr. Harris continued a conversation begun in his last appearance, are we spending too much time concentrating on a diploma at the expense of preparing the youth with ASD for independence with a job and a social life?   Erin, who writes and blogs as AspergerSadie, is recent college graduate; she lives independently, drives and holds a job at Devereux, thanks to aid from an assigned service provider who makes sure she stays on schedule and focused.  She talked about her school experience where her autism was not diagnosed until fifth grade and where no real accommodations were made, she noted that she lost critical support through a lack of information – she did not know that by deferring her high school graduation she could receive services through her 21st birthday.  Dr. Harris discussed the need for parents to register for services well before graduation and to plan ahead for the time when their child is no longer in the school system.  He also discussed social opportunities and his recent discovery that integration into society and friendships were more important to his clients than employment and career.   Erin's book, I Have Asperger's, is available through Amazon, you can follow her on Twitter and Facebook as AspergerSadie For information about services offered by Devereux go to devereux.org See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Carrie Hart got the call that her son Lucas was accepted into the Little Tots program, she didn’t know what to do. “I remember that day. I was with my friend at The Forestry Farm. I was in the car and I think I started crying and then I probably did laps in my car because I was so excited. It was an instant sense of relief.” Relief because her son was about to get the help he needed to overcome some pretty big challenges. Lucas was diagnosed with autism shortly after turning two. Hart knew he needed a type of therapy that would allow him to catch up on the speech and social skills he was struggling to develop. She wanted her son in the Little Tots program because of its sterling reputation. Little Tots is an early intensive intervention program for children between 18 and 48 months. It is run by Autism Services of Saskatoon and provides one-on-one therapy for autistic children. It is also the only program of its kind in Saskatchewan. This episode explores the Little Tots program through Lucas. Eric interviews Carrie and Desirae Boutin. She is the interim director of Little Tots. It takes a lot of people pulling in the same direction to help an autistic child. Carrie and Desirae are wonderful examples of this. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did creating it. Thank you for listening and subscribing to the podcast. Cheers...Eric
