On Sept. 1, 1995, a police officer in Fort Smith, Arkansas pulled over a vehicle. A man named Jerry Cogan was driving and his girlfriend, 24-year-old Lori Murchison, was the passenger. Lori worked at a local nursing home. She had a four year old daughter, Britney, and adored her little girl. But Lori had been battling an addiction to drugs, according to what her friends told police, mainly to methamphetamines and also alcohol. Because of that, Lori had been living with her mother, Nancy, in between staying at different local motels, and Nancy had been taking care of Lori’s daughter on and off. Lori and Jerry had been at a bar that night. When the officer pulled them over, he believed that both of them had been drinking. So, he placed Jerry under arrest for DUI, and Lori for suspicion of public intoxication. Lori was taken to the Sebastian County jail. And she was released sometime after 5 AM on September 2nd. She told detectives that she planned to get money and come back to bail Jerry out. But she never returned to jail. The last time she was seen alive was at the Continental Motel, when she was picking up a key to a room. Her family had no way of knowing where she was - or that the hunt for this missing mother would eventually involve charges of corruption at the highest levels of government. Send us Fan MailA parasite that senses you coming. An “egg” that waits for the right moment. A life cycle designed to turn a host into a nursery. Space pathogen sci-fi stories hit so hard because they borrow from real evolutionary tricks, and in this episode we put that biology under a microscope as we dissect out some of our sci-fi favorites. We start with the Alien franchise and unpack what makes xenomorph horror feel believable: host detection, parasite-like behavior, and uncomfortable parallels on Earth like ticks that track hosts, embryos that respond to temperature stress, and jewel wasps whose reproduction is basically nature's version of a chestburster scene. From there, we shift to the classic fear that something could arrive from space and infect us, examining the hypothesis of lithopanspermia and the Murchison meteorite as real-world anchors. Then we flip the question: what if we are safe from space, but space isn't safe from us? What if the most realistic space biosecurity threat is humans bringing microbes with us? We talk astronaut health, microgravity, radiation, circadian disruption, immune changes, microbiome shifts, and how space impacts pathogens. We dig into viral reactivation data, and what that could mean for longer missions and eventual Mars travel.

In this episode of SpaceTime, we delve into remarkable discoveries that illuminate the origins of our planet and the cosmos beyond.Ancient Australian Rocks Shed Light on Earth's OriginsScientists have made significant strides in understanding the formation of Earth and the Moon through the analysis of 3.7 billion-year-old feldspar crystals from the Murchison region in Western Australia. This research reveals that continental growth began relatively late in Earth's history, around three and a half billion years ago, suggesting a shared composition between Earth and the Moon following a colossal impact event. The findings challenge existing theories about the timing of crustal development and provide new insights into the early geological processes that shaped our planet.Hints of a Possible Fifth Force in NatureA groundbreaking report has emerged, suggesting the potential existence of a fifth fundamental force of nature. Researchers have observed unexpected deviations in electron transitions among calcium isotopes, hinting at a new particle, the Yukawa boson. This discovery could reshape the standard model of particle physics and deepen our understanding of the universe's fundamental forces, as scientists continue to explore the mysteries of atomic interactions.Record-Breaking Ocean Waves Observed from SpaceIn an astonishing revelation, satellites have recorded ocean waves reaching heights of nearly 20 metres, the largest ever measured from space. This episode explores how these massive waves, driven by storms, can carry destructive energy across vast distances, impacting coastlines far from the storm's origin. The findings not only validate existing wave models but also reveal new insights into the energy dynamics of ocean swells.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesNature CommunicationsPhysical Review LettersProceedings of the National Academy of SciencesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-your-guide-to-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

In this episode of SpaceTime, we delve into the intriguing world of near-Earth asteroids, the evolution of our universe, and the remarkable discovery of a rogue planet experiencing unprecedented growth.Invisible Asteroids Near Venus: A Hidden ThreatRecent computer simulations published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics have raised alarms about a population of near-Earth asteroids that remain undetectable due to their proximity to Venus. These Venusian co-orbital asteroids, which share an orbital resonance with Venus, could pose a collision risk to Earth within a few thousand years. The study's lead author, Valerio Carumba, explains the challenges of observing these asteroids, as they are obscured by the Sun's glare. With a size of around 300 metres, these asteroids could create impact craters several kilometres wide, highlighting the need for dedicated space missions to monitor this potential threat. The Universe's Evolution: New Insights from the Epoch of ReionizationAstronomers have made significant strides in understanding the universe's early days, revealing that it was warmer than previously thought before the first stars ignited. Research based on observations from the Murchison Wide Field Array in Western Australia indicates that the gas between galaxies was heated around 800 million years after the Big Bang, contradicting earlier theories of a cold universe. This heating, likely driven by early X-ray sources, set the stage for the epoch of reionization, which transformed the cosmos from opaque to transparent, allowing light to travel freely.A Richie Planet's Remarkable Growth SpurtIn a groundbreaking discovery, astronomers have identified a rogue planet, catalogued as char 11 oh 7 minus 7626, that is not bound to any star and is growing at an astonishing rate of 6 billion tonnes of gas and dust per second. Located approximately 600 light years away in the constellation Chameleon, this planet challenges conventional notions of planetary stability. Observations reveal that its accretion rate fluctuates dramatically, highlighting the dynamic processes at play in the formation of rogue planets and blurring the lines between planets and stars.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstronomy and Astrophysicshttps://www.aanda.org/Astrophysical Journal Lettershttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/2041-8205Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-your-guide-to-space-astronomy--2458531/support.Invisible Asteroids Near Venus: A Hidden ThreatThe Universe's Evolution: New Insights from the Epoch of ReionizationA Richie Planet's Remarkable Growth Spurt(00:00) The threat posed by invisible asteroids near Venus(10:30) New findings on the universe's warm early phase(19:00) Discovery of a rogue planet growing at record rates(27:15) Science Robert: 2025 Nobel Prize announcements

This is Part 8 of the mini-series that covers the story of Bobby Baker. This mini-series is part of a larger series covering Billy Sol Estes, Mac Wallace, Bobby Baker and other members of Johnson's Texas inner circle. All of these men were quite intertwined around Johnson at the time of the assassination. They were involved in circumstances that were closing in on Johnson too and that provided him great motive in the killing of the President. The story is extraordinary. Today's episode tells the story of the deal that Bobby Baker brokered to import meat form Haiti to Puerto Rico and he parlayed that into more than a finder's fee...he would gain a 10% profits interest in the Haitian slaughterhouse without any indications as to why the profits interest was granted. And the money would flow long after the initial transaction was done and over with. Sound puzzling to you, well guess who owned that slaughterhouse...the Murchison's of Texas fame. The Senate Rules committee investigated these transactions as part of their hearings in 1963 and 1964 and never got to the bottom of why these transactions were constructed the way they were or what Bobby Baker was supposed to do in return for the profits interest. The characters, setting and details around this story make it a quintessential example of influence peddling at it's finest and that was in essence declared by the Senate committee during their investigation.Rumors of Johnson's involvement in the assassination began to swirl almost immediately after the President's murder and there is a defined school of thought within the JFK assassination research community that staunchly believes in Johnson's involvement. His involvement in both the assassination and its cover up. Join us in one of the most fascinating story tells of the Kennedy assassination and stick around as we will be returning to the Mexico City series right after we complete this min-series that was spawned by the recent release of the Billy Sol Estes and Cliff Carter tape that the two recorded in 1971. Folks, you just can't write this stuff. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it, were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This real-life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

Dave Sobel engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Jon Murchison, CEO of BlackPoint Cyber, about the current state of cybersecurity policies and practices. They discuss the initiatives surrounding "secure by design" and "secure by default," emphasizing the challenges faced by managed IT service providers in implementing these ideals. Jon expresses skepticism about the immediate impact of these policies on the ground level, noting that while they are well-intentioned, they often fall short of practical application in real-world scenarios. The discussion shifts to the dynamics of responsibility and liability within the cybersecurity landscape. Jon highlights the disparity between software vendors and service providers regarding accountability when security breaches occur. He argues that while security providers should be held liable for secure code design and regular penetration testing, the complexities of cybersecurity make it difficult to assign blame definitively. This nuanced perspective underscores the need for a balanced approach to liability that encourages innovation without stifling progress. As the conversation progresses, Jon shares his insights on the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) and its potential as a broader standard. He acknowledges the foundational value of existing frameworks like NIST and ISO but critiques their lack of practical guidance for organizations. Jon advocates for a more prescriptive approach that focuses on actionable steps for hardening security measures, rather than vague compliance requirements that can lead to checkbox exercises. Finally, Jon emphasizes the critical importance of identity management in cybersecurity. He explains how threat actors have evolved their tactics, often exploiting legitimate credentials to navigate networks undetected. The episode concludes with Jon discussing the future of posture management and the need for improved security measures around automation, highlighting the ongoing challenges and opportunities in the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape. Launched aboard a Long March 2F rocket, the space plane's activities remain shrouded in mystery, with speculation about its sub-satellite designed for proximity and recapture spy manoeuvres.- **Seeing the Universe in Radio Waves**: Back in 2016, the Murchison Widefield Array telescope in Western Australia provided a glimpse of the universe as it would appear if human eyes could see radio waves. The GLEAM survey catalogued around 300,000 galaxies, revealing the remnants of distant star explosions, galaxy collisions, and the activities of supermassive black holes. This groundbreaking research offers invaluable insights into the universe's structure and the physics of distant galaxies.00:00:00 " This is spacetime series 27, episode 87, for broadcast on 19 July 202400:00:46 " NASA's Parker solar probe just completed its 20th close approach to the sun00:05:03 " Large scale radio surveys like Gleam are extremely valuable to scientists00:10:44 " I have student looking for transient m objects in our survey00:16:27 " A new study claims modern dingoes share very little ancestry with other breeds00:18:11 " New research finds people who invest in cryptocurrency more likely to hold fringe viewsFollow our cosmic conversations on X @stuartgary, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
