10 Years ago, Brent was interviewed by Tristan about the film Saving Mes Aynak and now they are reuinted in podcast form once again.Across the world, cultural heritage faces the threat of human development, for things like housing or resources. 10 years ago Saving Mes Aynak was a film about a Buhddist archaeological site of the same name in Afgahistan and followed the stories of Afgan archaeologists in their attempts to record and perserve the archaeological record under the threat of the Taliban and more directly, a Chinese mining company, looking to extract copper from the area.In this episode, Brent recounts his time filming Saving Mes Aynak and reflects on the political changes in the country since then. Also discussed in his current project, which is about cultural heritage under threat, and telling the stories of the people who are attempting to rescue it.Links Saving Mes Aynak Brent E. http://www.medill.northwestern.edu/about/faculty-and-staff/faculty/brent-huffman.html (Brent E. Huffman)‘s debut documentary, http://www.savingmesaynak.com/ (Saving Mes Aynak), is making a lot of noise these days. This MacArthur Foundation-sponsored film has played dozens of film festivals all over the globe, and its filmmaker, Huffman, has been on media outlets such as http://www.cnn.com (CNN), http://www.aljazeera.com/ (Al Jazeera), http://www.npr.org/ (NPR), discussing the massive archaeological site, Mes Aynak, Afghanistan, which is in danger of being completely destroyed by Chinese copper mining interests.   I had the pleasure of holding a shared conversation with Huffman for this week's TDL. We discussed such topics as filming in dangerous conditions in a developing country, the importance of one's fixer/translation, the DIY approach to doc making, securing the afore-mentioned prestigious https://www.macfound.org/ (MacArthur Foundation) grant, and a number of other topics that will appeal to any #DocLifer.   Related ResourcesWatch the trailer for Saving Mes Aynak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8_EGRxK3UM   You can watch the film in its entirety through these platforms: https://www.netflix.com/title/80158315 (Netflix) | https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/saving-mes-aynak/id1165650101 (iTunes) | https://www.amazon.com/Saving-Mes-Aynak-Brent-Huffman/dp/B01N8SIV16/ref=tmm_aiv_swatch_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= (Amazon)   Subscribehttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-documentary-life/id1112679868 (Apple) | https://open.spotify.com/show/0wYlYHJzyk3Y7fHzDDwvmp (Spotify) | https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/thedocumentarylife/the-documentary-life (Stitcher) |  Rate and ReviewIf you have found value in this podcast please leave a review so it can become more visible to others. Simply click the https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/documentary-life-filmmaking-documentary-films-documentary/id1112679868?mt=2 (link) and then click on the Ratings and Reviews tab to make your entry. Thank you for your support!

Today’s episode is a little different to others; I speak to Brent Huffman, a filmmaker with a passion for a site in Afghanistan Mes Aynak is under threat from a Chinese mining company who wish to perform open cast mining on the site to acquire the copper ore underneath. In this episode, Brent describes his motivation for travelling in a very dangerous part of Afghanistan and what he saw on site; I ask him about how his opinion of archaeology has changed over the course of filming and he describes his frustration with the politics of the site preventing meaningful salvage of the history. Some of the things talked about are very difficult to hear and I want to put a slight disclaimer for listeners to be aware of some of the occupational dangers of working in this part of the world. The film is premiering at the International Documentary Film festival Amsterdam  and if you want more information head on over to the Saving Mes Aynak website Links @Brent_Huffman @SavingMesAynak   Subscribe and Review on iTunes
