Presenting episode 112 of the Skwigly Animation Podcast! In this episode we welcome back director Robert Morgan, whose live-action/animation hybrid horror feature film 'Stopmotion' is released on Shudder this month. Starring Aisling Franciosi as haunted stop-motion animator Ella Blake alongside Stella Gonet and Tom York, Stopmotion is written by Robert Morgan with Robin King and recently enjoyed a festival run where it picked up the award for Best Director at Fantastic Fest and the Special Jury Award at Sitges. Filmed in live-action combined with Robert Morgan's signature brand of nightmarish puppet design and uncanny stop-motion animation, the film expands on a multi-award-winning legacy of (mostly) animated horror shorts that include The Man in the Lower Left Hand Corner of the Photograph, The Cat With Hands, The Separation, Invocation and Bobby Yeah, the latter picking up a BAFTA nomination for Animated Short in 2012. Morgan's body of work also includes contributions to YouTube phenomenon Don't Hug Me I'm Scared and the feature films The ABCs of Death 2 and To Dust, as well as the tribute films Belial's Dream and Tomorrow I Will Be Dirt, created for Arrow's BD releases of cult horror classics Basket Case and Schramm respectively. Also discussed: Festival reports from Anima Brussels, Animation Dingle and Cardiff Animation Festival, an overview of some of the exciting projects coming out of the Irish animation sector, 25 years of Cartoon Saloon, the BFI's upcoming 'Stop-Motion' season curated by Justin Johnson, 'Ren & Stimpy' reboot leaks and the bizarre fate of 'Coyote Vs. Acme'. Presented by Ben Mitchell and Steve Henderson Interview conducted by Ben Mitchell Edited, produced and music by Ben Mitchell

This week's show is a special one, as It's our first time getting to review a film via an advanced screener and boy was this a fun flick. The latest film from Berlin Film Festivals Silver Bear winner Radu Jude (Aferim! (Bravo!) and Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn) Do Not Expect Too Much From The End Of The World takes a fierce and darkly comic swipe at modern day life. Overworked and underpaid production assistant Angela (Ilinca Manolache) is assigned to film a workplace safety video for a multinational corporation in Bucharest. When one of the interviewees makes a statement that ignites a scandal, Angela has to re-invent the story. Featuring appearances from Nina Hoss, Uwe Boll, and Angela's TikTok alter-ego Bobiță, Jude's anarchic satire is a wild and unforgettable ride through the vulgar indignities of the 21st century. The film was awarded the Special Jury Award at Locarno Film Festival and will stream exclusively on MUBI in Canada from May 3, 2024. So tune in and hear our thoughts on this example of Romanian New Wave cinema and then head to Mubi for May 3 to check it out for yourself.
The film Blood is about Chloe, a woman who travels to Japan for her work as a photographer, just a couple of years after the death of her husband. She meets up with her Japanese friend Toshi who is interested in turning their friendship into a relationship, and she needs to decide if she is ready to welcome romantic love back into her life. Blood is a quiet and contemplative movie about human relationships, and unfolds slowly through Chloe's conversations, interactions and dreams. Director Bradley Rust Gray and cinematographer Eric Lin had worked together before on Brad's film, The Exploding Girl. A lot of Blood was improvised, and Brad used the script mainly as an outline short of a few scenes needed for exposition. They found opportunities to weave in the dreams Chloe has about her past with her husband in Iceland. Eric and Brad wanted everything to feel very naturalistic, as if the camera is eavesdropping. Eric chose to shoot much of it on very long lenses, as though shooting a nature documentary. They wanted Blood to feel like the audience is present with Chloe the whole time, peering in on moments in her life. Blood premiered at the Sundance 2022 Film Festival and was the Special Jury Award winner for Uncompromising Artistic Vision. Blood is seeking sales and distribution. Howard Blake OBE FRAM is a composer, conductor, and pianist whose career has spanned more than 50 years and produced more than 650 works. Blake's most successful work is his soundtrack for Channel 4's 1982 film The Snowman, which includes the song "Walking in the Air". He is increasingly recognised for his classical works including concertos, oratorios, ballets, operas and many instrumental pieces.Missing music, Blake played the piano in pubs and clubs for a couple of years until being discovered and signed by EMI to make a solo album and work as a session musician on many recordings. This led to work as an arranger and a composer, employment that gradually became his full-time occupation. In the late 1960s, on the recommendation of Bernard Herrmann, Blake began working as a keyboard player and arranger with veteran screen composer Laurie Johnson on music for the hit ITV television series The Avengers. During the program's sixth and final season in 1968–1969, Johnson was commissioned to write the soundtrack music for the feature film Hot Millions; to enable him to work on the film score, Johnson recruited Blake to take over composing duties for him, and Blake composed the incidental music for ten complete episodes of that series. In 1970, shortly after the series finished, he lived in a beach hut in Cornwall for about two months, "to get away from it all".Over an active career he has written numerous film scores, including The Duellists with Sir Ridley Scott and David Puttnam, which gained the Special Jury Award at the Cannes Festival in 1977; A Month in the Country with Kenneth Branagh and Colin Firth, which gained him the British Film Institute Anthony Asquith Award for musical excellence in 1989; and The Snowman, which was nominated for an Oscar after its first screening on Channel 4 in 1982, and has won many other prizes internationally. From this, his famous song "Walking in the Air", for which he also wrote the lyrics, was the success that launched Aled Jones in 1985 (although Jones only recorded the song three years after the release of the film, while the song on the soundtrack is sung by the St Paul's chorister Peter Auty. Blake's concert version of The Snowman for narrator and orchestra is now performed worldwide, as is the full-length ballet of the same name, launched in 1997, which in 2013 celebrated its 16th consecutive Christmas season for Sadler's Wells at the Peacock Theatre in London. In 1980, Blake was commissioned to write an orchestral music score for Flash Gordon, in collaboration with Queen. He was given only 10 days to produce the results, and after completion fell ill with pneumonia brought on by exhaustion. He recovered, and he and Queen were jointly nominated for a BAFTA Award. It was, however, a disappointment to him that the makers of Flash Gordon did not use much of his score.Blake has composed many concert works, including the Piano Concerto commissioned by the Philharmonia Orchestra for the 30th birthday of Princess Diana in 1991, in which he also featured as soloist; the Violin Concerto to celebrate the centenary of the City of Leeds in 1993; the cantata to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations in 1995, performed in the presence of the Royal Family in Westminster Hall; and the large-scale choral/orchestral work Benedictus, championed by Sir David Willcocks and the Bach Choir, which was given its London premiere in Westminster Cathedral in 1989 with Cardinal Basil Hume as narrator, and which has been widely performed ever since. My next guest is a writer director who started out life playing guitar in a heavy rock band. When that went belly up, he tried his hand at an equally tough career to crack – making films. His second choice seems to be working out a lot better. To date he's picked up over 40 awards for his films and screenplays in categories such as Best Director, Best Narrative Feature, Best Short Film, Best Screenplay, Gran Jury Award, Special Jury Award and Audience Choice. After a sometimes hair-raising spell directing reality shows, he got to direct his first feature, a comedy called The Truth About Lies, in 2015. We'd never met before this podcast, but after just a few minutes chatting with Phil Allocco, I felt an immediate connection. In fact, we had quite a blast. Here's that take. Dr. Darshana Sreedhar Mini talks to Rintu Thomas & Sushmit Ghosh about WRITING WITH FIRE. Hailed as “the most inspiring journalism movie—maybe ever” by The Washington Post, this rousing documentary spotlights the only Indian newspaper run entirely by women. Founded nearly 20 years ago by a band of fearless Dalit women in rural Uttar Pradesh, the Khabar Lahariya paper has aggressively taken on India’s patriarchy and beaten the odds to have a real-world impact on local politics. But now, its reporters are facing the directive dreaded in newsrooms the world over throughout the 21st century: it’s time to “pivot to video.” As members of India’s lowest caste, many of the paper’s staff have never handled a smartphone before, and reconfiguring their reportage for YouTube is no small hurdle. But with an online presence comes a broader reach, and as their webpage’s clicks start climbing, the self-taught team behind Khabar Lahariya finds themselves taking on national issues and gaining global recognition. This real-world David and Goliath story of women standing up to speak truth to power won both an Audience Award and Special Jury Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. “A stirring and inspiring documentary about some very courageous women, who deftly articulate and defend the need for accurate, fearless journalism in the pursuit of justice” (Vox). In the new HBO Documentary Film - ERNIE & JOE: CRISIS COPS, director Jenifer McShane dives into the lives of these incredible officers and their amazing mental health unit officers, trying and succeeding in doing good and truly making an impact. Winner of the Special Jury Award for Empathy in Craft at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, director Jenifer McShane follows two members Ernie Stevens and Joe Smarro of the San Antonio Police Department’s 10-person Mental Health Unit who are helping to change the way police respond to mental health calls. Their jail diversion work is humane and desperately needed to improve not only the health of the mentally ill, but also of their families. The duo head the special team that looks to treat mental health calls as opposed to the traditional policing tactics. Drawing on their own experiences, each have learned that the old ways of policing and dealing with mental health issues weren’t working. The issues they face as a department are the issues every community and police department in the country faces. The two officers and their colleagues in this unique department provide hope and inspiration at a time when we need it most, and show that great ideas and inspiration can come from any corner of the country. Director Jenifer McShane and film subjects Ernie Stevens and Joe Smarro join us for a conversation on the trailblazing work being done by themselves and their colleagues as well as the withering and sometimes frustrating challenges that mental health, “crisis cops” deal with in the face of a national mental health epidemic. Errol Webber: a legal immigrant from Kingston, Jamaica, came to the U.S. with his family in 2002 when he was 15, with dreams of being a commercial airline pilot. Webber went on to study film at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where, as a freshman, he opened his own photography and video production business out of his college dorm room. After graduating in 2008, Webber’s professor recommended him to shoot a film in Africa - Music By Prudence - about a tenacious group of Zimbabwean Afro- fusion musicians with disabilities. Music By Prudence won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2010. Since then Webber has been commissioned to produce or shoot documentary and narrative films for educational institutions and non- profits. His documentary film work explores topics such as: healthcare, education, criminal justice, human rights, and police-community relations. Cinematographer of the: Oscar-winning, Music By Prudence The film American Promise juxtaposes the nuances of public vs. Sundance-winning, American Promise private education, and shows us the sacrifices many parents are willing to make in order to afford their children the best education possible. This decade-long coming-of-age documentary that Webber collaborated on, won the Special Jury Award for Achievement in Filmmaking at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Moving to California, in 2014, the University of Washington, Tacoma, commissioned Webber to co-produce the documentary, Love & Solidarity which chronicles key U.S. Labor Movements, how it shaped resulting labor laws, and its effect on American society when it comes to workers’ rights. Endorsed and lauded by elected officials and law enforcement professionals across the country, Webber’s newest feature documentary, WALKING WHILE BLACK: L.O.V.E. Is the Answer, tackles the critical issue of racial profiling, and explores cognitive psychology and implicit bias, while showing the need for emotional intelligence, promoting mental health and community engagement programs, bridging the gap between peace officers and the communities they serve. Errol Webber has identified solutions to Federal issues that he believes are consequential to America’s future. These include addressing: Taxation, Healthcare, Education, Environment, Immigration, Police & Military, Jobs & Economy, Foreign Policy, Defending the Constitution, and combating the proliferation of Socialism. After more than a decade of community engagement and programming through his socially-conscious documentary film work, Award-winning Los Angeles Film Producer, Errol Webber continues to give back to the nation that gave him the invaluable opportunity to succeed, by being a catalyst for change and having a seat at the table in public office as he campaigns for California’s 37th Congressional District. Marrying stunning visuals with social advocacy, Rahul Jain’s debut documentary — winner of the Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival — takes audiences into the labyrinthine passages of an enormous textile factory in Gujarat, India. Jain’s camera wanders freely between pulsating machines and bubbling vats of dye to create a moving portrait of the human laborers who toil away there for 12 hours a day to eke out a meager living for their families back home. Interviews with these workers and the factory owners who employ them reveal the stark inequality and dangerous working conditions brought about by unregulated industrialization in the region. This political message is delivered amidst the unsettling beauty of the factory’s mechanical underworld and the colorful, billowing fabrics it produces. Director Rahul Jain joins us to talk about the making of his stark, mesmerizing, and unsettling film and the penetrating sense of complicity we all should feel for the men and the inhumane work conditions they find themselves in. Listen in as Eileen talks about her new film A Jihadi In The Family, Islamophobia, brokenness, and the power of real community. See the trailer and Read more here. Synopsis Overnight, Calgary mother Christianne Boudreau has a new identity, “mother of a terrorist,” when her son Damian is killed fighting with ISIS. “I never saw it coming”, she says, echoing hundreds of mothers in Europe and North America whose children have left home to embrace violent extremism. How and why young people, who have grown up in western countries, are being recruited to terrorist groups and the effect it’s having on the families they leave behind, is the focus of the new documentary A JIHADI IN THE FAMILY. Unlike many parents who fear to speak publicly about what happened to their children, Christianne’s response to this tragedy is to personally take on the battle against ISIS. Driven to understand the destructive path her son chose, Christianne embarks on a journey to meet others who have a stake in the issue. Her quest for answers takes her to her son's imam, to counter-terrorism experts, and to a man who survived his own experience with extremists and became a crusader against their recruiters. In Europe, where thousands of young men and women have been lured into terrorist groups, she develops strong bonds with other women who’ve been shattered by the disappearance of their children. Each of these mothers is also a victim of terrorism. A JIHADI IN THE FAMILY will have a repeat broadcast on CBC Thursday, March 24th at 9 pm ET. With unprecedented access, CARTEL LAND is a riveting, on-the-ground look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy the murderous Mexican drug cartels. In the Mexican state of Michoacn, Dr. Jose Mireles, a small-town physician known as "El Doctor," leads the Autodefensas, a citizen uprising against the violent Knights Templar drug cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region for years.
