‘The Whole World Feels Really Dystopian': Award-Winning Director Asif Kapadia on the Inspiration Behind His New Film, ‘2073'

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit zeteo.comDo you ever wonder where the world will be in 50 years? This is the key question that award-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia – best known for his films ‘Diego Maradona', ‘Amy' and ‘Senna' – seeks to answer in his newest work, ‘2073.' And the answer is a lot scarier than perhaps the flying cars we imagined for the future.‘2073' gives us a look at just one of the possibilities if the world continues to devolve at its current pace. A world almost unrecognizable as citizens of ‘New San Francisco' face the fall of democracy and the harrowing effects of climate change. (Be sure to watch the exclusive clip from the film at the end of the interview above.)“I thought the whole world feels really dystopian – everything that happens every day that I read, everything I see happening around me – and I thought, how do I express this feeling, this fear about where we're heading?” Kapadia tells Mehdi. He continues, “My main aim with this film was to kind of almost have a God's eye view of the whole world. Because my background is from India, I've worked in Brazil, I've worked in Europe, I live in the UK, I've worked in the US. I just saw the same kind of elements, the same playbook happening everywhere.”Thus, ‘2073' depicts the confluence of climate change and the rise of authoritarianism in the dystopian city of New San Francisco, where there's no privacy, no freedom, no democracy. The film is a warning of what is to come if we let oligarchs go unchecked. But it's not all doom and gloom, because as much as ‘2073' serves as a warning, it also is a call to action.“The film is there to create a dialogue for us to be talking now, for you, for me, for everyone to be saying, what can we individually do? I don't think it's as simple as putting a neat little moment at the end of the film and saying, if you do this, everything will be great. I mean, the struggle is much more complex and the fight for freedom and democracy is much more layered than me just saying go out and vote. There's something else going on here and we're going to have to talk about it,” Kapadia explains. He concludes, “I think partly it starts at home. It starts with you, starts with your kids, it starts with your family, your parents, your aunties and uncles, but then also a kind of wider community about what are we going to do to protect ourselves from what is happening. We're not crazy. This stuff is happening. And I think the film, part of the process of showing it, has been almost therapy for people.”Watch the full interview above to hear what Kapadia's take is on the mainstream media's coverage of the issues he highlights in ‘2073', and the exclusive clip, only for Zeteo paid subscribers

In many ways, Texas is representative of the demographic and economic dynamism of America. The Lone Star State is very diverse with Latinos as the largest ethnic group; plus, it boasts the largest African American population in the country. Despite the sweeping demographic change of the last few decades, Texas remains deeply conservative with only one Black and one Latino among statewide elected officials – pushing political observers to begin questioning why Texas politics have remained unchanged. The economic boom of the last decade, dubbed the Texas Miracle, has also skipped over Black and Brown families who are themselves helping to drive this growth and expansion. This is especially true for historic Black communities in one of the wealthiest parts of the world – Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast.   Join us as I SEE U's Eddie Robinson speaks unguarded with award-winning filmmaker, Alex Stapleton. Her documentary, “The Price of Oil,” is part of HBO's ‘God Save Texas,' a three-part docuseries now streaming on Max. The renowned director turns a critical eye on the lucrative oil and gas industry – and documents how these companies created a toxic hell for her family and their Houston-area community – destroying the hard-won oasis where Black families could finally own their homes and build wealth. When outsiders would merely suggest to these Texas residents that they should simply move – Stapleton turns the table to question why business leaders and government officials failed from the start to fully compensate generations of Black and Brown communities through adequate health resources and regulation of an industry run amok.

Suicide has quickly become a rampant epidemic across our country and world today, especially in the lives of our youth and adolescents. Clearly, we need more suicide awareness and prevention measures as well as opportunities to be better equipped to meet the needs of today's generations like never before! Thankfully in today's episode we will be discussing a brand new movie that will provide opportunities just like those. Joining us today on the podcast is a 2x Emmy Award Winning Filmmaker and Director, Kyle Roberts. In and throughout today's conversation, Kyle will be unpacking his brand new movie, What Rhymes With Reason, which will be releasing October 10th - World Mental Health Day! This movie involves movie involves a tragedy which ignites a group of teens to go on a quest to find a legendary landmark hidden in the wilderness. Together, they navigate the adventure while confronting the darkness within themselves. Kyle was called to the mission of developing a film that was family friendly yet still highlighting some of the challenges that our youth and adolescents are facing such as anxiety, depression, identity development, and even conversations and thoughts of suicide. However, Kyle's heart, and what you see in the culmination of the film is that he wants every young person to walk away feeling seen, heard, not alone, and understanding that they were created by God, on purpose, and for a purpose! That's his heart and you'll hear all throughout today's conversation about the little details that God orchestrated, and how His fingerprints have been all over the preparation and production of this film! And what I love about this movie is that it provides and sparks an incredible opportunity for so many families to be able to have some difficult yet imperative conversations together! So again I challenge you to not just listen to today's episode and hear an inspiring story on the background of an incredible new movie that I believe we need for such a time as this, but I challenge you to actually do something with that by taking your friends and families to pack the movie theaters out on October 10th to go and see Kyle's brand new movie, What Rhymes With Reason! Find Out More about What Rhymes With Reason Here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21515872/ Watch the Official Trailer for What Rhymes With Reason Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga0yt-IJ0o8 Purchase Tickets for What Rhymes With Reason Here: https://www.regmovies.com/

Sarah Moshman is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker whose exceptional storytelling has captivated and inspired audiences globally. She uses storytelling as a tool for creating social change and it is her mission to tell stories that uplift, inform and inspire as well as showcase strong female role models on screen. In this episode of Ladybits and Leadership, we discuss Sarah's filmmaking journey, how her film Unbound about the first mother-astronaut, Dr. Ana Lee Fisher, went intergalactic and was shown on the International Space Station, and her excitement to debut her upcoming project A Mother is Born which highlights the first three months of the sleep-deprived, milk-stained, and emotional haze of early motherhood and how a writer tries to make sense of her surreal identity as a new mom. Sarah loves capturing the human experience through her lens and shining a light on stories that represent women in all of their complexities, flaws, strength and beauty. Sarah's films gravitate towards women who are blazing trails, redefining stereotypes, and are truly ordinary women doing extraordinary things - even if that comes in the form of extraordinary courage to speak up for oneself. Sarah's films are intertwined with social impact and each one has been used as a tool for discussion and change and to uplift, inform and inspire audiences worldwide.
