In 1936, a Russian man named Karp Lykov watched a Soviet patrol shoot his brother dead in a field — and in that moment, he made a decision. He gathered his wife and two young children, packed seeds and a spinning wheel, and walked into the Siberian wilderness. He never came back. For 42 years, the Lykov family lived in a one-room log cabin more than 150 miles from the nearest human settlement, raising two children who had never once seen another face besides their own family's. Když v únoru 2022 spustilo Rusko invazi na Ukrajinu, byl reportér Vojtěch Boháč u toho. Pohyboval se u běloruské hranice, s kolegyní se dostal i pod palbu. V redakci má v rámečku kulku z kalašnikova. „To nás vykoplo nahoru,“ říká.Vojtěch Boháč na Ukrajině tehdy nebyl jako člen velké redakce se silným zázemím, ale jako mladý žurnalista, který si pár let před tím založil server zaměřený na zahraniční zpravodajství - Voxpot. Znali ho jen skalní fanoušci a on tomu dělal šéfredaktora.Na Ukrajině si ale Boháče ihned všimla velká česká média. Dělala s ním rozhovory z prvních dní války, z těžko přístupných míst. A veřejnost sledovala jeho pravidelný reporting na sociálních sítích.„Bylo to hodně silné. Tehdy si také myslím, že to bylo období, kdy jsme měli obrovský vliv i na veřejné mínění v Česku, pokud šlo o začátek války na Ukrajině,“ vypráví Vojtěch Boháč, který byl hostem nejnovějšího dílu podcastu Mediální cirkus.Voxpot Boháč založil v roce 2018, protože mu v Česku chybělo velké zahraniční zpravodajství, po vzoru amerického Vice News.„Ze začátku nikdo nevěřil, že to vydrží déle než jeden rok, a z toho mám teď radost, že jsme po osmi letech pořád tady na scéně,“ říká novinář o projektu, který nastartoval s kolegyní Anetou Václavíkovou.Svoji práci nabízel původně i velkým redakcím, zejména České televizi, ale nevyšlo to. Nikdo nebyl ochotný zaplatit drahou televizní produkci. Tým Voxpotu pak se postupně začala soustředit na psané reportáže. Začátky byly těžké.„Pořád tady převládalo, že se nás ten svět až tak netýká a že tady jsme v Česku zavření za horami a ostatní věci se nám sice občas líbí, nebo nelíbí, ale když o nich nevíme, tak to až tak nevadí. Po Ukrajině i po nástupu Donalda Trumpa už všichni chápou, že bez širšího obrázku ze světa jen těžko budeme chápat, co se děje i u nás,“ vysvětluje Boháč, proč založil server Voxpot.Za Gazu jsme schytávali velkou kritikuOnline médium, které funguje z předplatitelů, přispěvatelů i grantů patří mezi středová až levicová. Jiný zpravodajský pohled byl vidět nejvíc na textech týkajících se útoků Izraele na pásmo Gazy a Palestinu po teroristických útocích Hamásu na Izrael.„Najednou se to v Česku vykládalo tak, že 7. říjen 2023 je začátek dějin izraelsko-palestinského konfliktu a všechno je legitimní reakce na ten teroristický útok Hamásu na Izrael, který byl naprosto brutální. Ale zároveň je potřeba se bavit o tom, jestli vyhlazení celé části země, kde žije půl milionu lidí, je legitimní reakce,“ říká Boháč.Voxpot patřil mezi menšinu českých médií, která izraelskou reakci na teroristické útoky Hamásu kritizovala.„Pokrývali jsme izraelsko-palestinský konflikt z našeho pohledu z víc neutrální pozice, než je úplně český mainstream. A za to jsme schytávali dost velkou kritiku. Hodně lidí, kteří nás ze začátku fakt měli rádi kvůli Ukrajině, že jsme na místě byli dřív než všichni ostatní, jak si dokážem najít kontakty a reportovat z těch nejvíc nebezpečných míst, nás totálně zavrhlo, že si nemyslíme to samé, co si myslí oni, nebo že to nepokrýváme tak, jak oni by si přáli,“ vypráví Boháč v Mediálním cirkusu a dodává:„Hodně lidí jsme tím naštvali, byl tam jako velký pád. Ale neustoupili jsme z toho, jak si myslíme, že by se to pokrývat mělo a to nás víc posílilo, než že by nám to ublížilo. Couvání před publikem podle aktuálních nálad je hrozně nebezpečné pro média. What do Nazis, fascists, incels, skinheads, misogynists, insurrectionists and Proud Boys all have in common? Many of them confide in reporter Elle Reeve.It was around 2015 and Reeve was reporting for Vice News about the rise of the “alt right,” a term coined by its leader, Richard Spencer. She spent time on internet message boards like 4chan and 8chan where far right activists communicated, trolled liberals, and began to coalesce as a movement. These were often ordinary people who increasingly embraced conspiracy theories and violence.This was during the presidency of Barack Obama, when many people were imagining that the U.S. was in the glow of a “post-racial” era. Reeve knew better. “Racism wasn't dying off with an older generation,” she told the Vermont Conversation. “There was a strong beating heart right there on the internet.”In 2017, Reeve was there when the alt right burst out of obscure Internet chat rooms and into public consciousness in a violent attack in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her documentary account, “Charlottesville: Race and Terror,” earned her and Vice News Tonight a Peabody Award, four Emmys and a George Polk Award.In 2019, Reeve became a correspondent for CNN, where she works today. She was at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 reporting on the attack on Congress by Trump supporters, many of whom she knew well.Why do they talk to her? “They want to tell their story, they want to confess, they want to unburden themselves,” she said.Reeve has a new book, “Black Pill: How I Witnessed the Darkest Corners of the Internet Come to Life, Poison Society, and Capture American Politics.” The title refers to how far right activists speak of taking the “black pill” of nihilism to justify their cruelty and violence. “It's this dark nihilism that the world is doomed. There's nothing you can do to change it, and you at best, can hope for it to collapse.”Reeve traces how far-right rhetoric has moved from the fringes to the mainstream, with Donald Trump and J.D. Vance channeling extremist ideas and language.Vance has denounced the “woke ideology” of “white women who are miserable about their own lives, enforcing codes about racial justice, gay rights on other people to make other people miserable, to account for how miserable they are in their own lives,” Reeve explained.Vance's use of the term “childless cat ladies” is another far right meme. “I've read that on 4chan six or seven years ago,” said Reeve. “It has trickled upward.”Another far right notion that is now embraced by mainstream Republicans is that diversity is bad. “They think that racial and ethnic and gender diversity makes us weaker. It makes us fools. This is just something that they ridiculed all the time.”Reeve explained the far right context of Trump's attacks on people of color. “If a white person commits a crime in their world, it's because they're a bad guy. But if a Black person commits a crime in their world, it's because they're Black.”Reeve warned that many people “are vulnerable to those ideas. I just interviewed a ton of people who were so nice to me at a Trump boat parade. They were so nice to me, and then they started talking to me about how it's not right to eat people's cats, and these people do animal sacrifice, and they're dirty and they bring disease.”“It's not all crazy people who believe this stuff. It's regular people and your neighbors,” said Reeve. “You have an obligation to push back against that, whether or not they'll listen to you.”Reeve said about the future, “There has been an escalating radicalization among the Republican elite and a softening among the voters… People speak freely about civil war. That is dangerous.”“I don't like it but I don't know where that balance ends up after the election. You can't do something like Jan. 6 without a feeling that there's an army behind you of supporters who will back you up.”

In 2023, 107,543 Americans died from an overdose—over 75 thousand of those overdosed from fentanyl. This is almost double the number of people who died in car accidents or from gun homicides that year. Fentanyl has been cut into heroin for years, but now is often mixed into meth and cocaine, fueling rising death counts for those drugs, a troubling development, considering that Americans are much more likely to try meth and cocaine than heroin. In Canada, the numbers are similarly astronomical, and fentanyl deaths have marched upward in Australia and many European countries as well. Ten years ago, fentanyl and its analogues overtook heroin to become the deadliest drug in Sweden. “Fentanyl is the game changer,” Special Agent in Charge James Hunt of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) told Vice News. “It's the most dangerous substance in the history of drug tracking. Heroin and cocaine pale in comparison to how dangerous fentanyl is.” Ben Westhoff is a best-selling investigative journalist focused on drugs, culture, and poverty. Deckman is the author of Tea Party Women (NYU Press: 2016), which examined the role of women in conservative politics. Her first book, School Board Battles: The Christian Right in Local Politics (Georgetown University Press: 2004) won the American Political Science Association's Hu Morken Award for best book on religion and politics. Columbia University Press will publish her latest book, The Politics of Gen Z: How the Youngest Voters Will Shape Our Democracy this September. The author of more than two dozen scholarly peer-reviewed articles, Deckman's commentary and research about politics has appeared in The New York Times, MSNBC, The Washington Post, CNN, The Hill, Vice News, The Wall Street Journal, 538 and Politico among other outlets. Prior to joining PRRI, Deckman served as the Louis L. Goldstein Professor of Public Affairs and Chair of the Political Science Department at Washington College, where she taught courses on American politics and research methods. Dedicated to promoting leadership opportunities for young women, she was the co-founder of Training Ms. President, a Maryland-based, non-partisan program that encouraged young women to consider running for political office. She is proud to have conducted research for IGNITE, a leading non-profit organization that builds political ambition in young women across the country. Deckman received her Ph.D. in Political Science from American University. A first-generation college student, she received her bachelor's degree in political science from St. Mary's College of Maryland, where she graduated class valedictorian. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump agreed to two debates on Wednesday. In agreeing to the debates, Biden and Trump are bucking the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which had been organizing debates since the 80s.U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said this week that the Department of Justice will “aggressively” prosecute anyone who threatens election workers ahead of the 2024 election. The announcement comes as a new poll from the Brennan Center for Justice found that more than half of local election officials are scared for their safety.
